They blew the roof off Madison Square Garden and I saw all the usual suspects (Who/Stones/Zep/Sabbath,Floyd etc.) do near the same thing back in the 70's. Brad- you're right - music DOES suck now. I mean CRAP? oh yea, the "C" is silent in that last word. I hate rap, and the idiots who think talking to a beat, or better yet, talking to someone ELSE'S beat is talent. No, just about anyone of us can talk and rhyme words. We've been learning to rhyme since we were kids. Music now is shit - sorry if offend anyone - but, man it's all garbage and I can assure you we won't be hearing Britney Spears on classic rock stations in 20 years.

Their '81 show at Madison Squarec Garden & The New Haven Coliseum were incredible. The entire lighting grid flipped over to read VAN HALEN in aircraft lights. They had speakers stacked to the cieling. I show teens snapshots I took of Van Halen, Zeppelin, The Who etc. in their prime and they all say "music now sucks, I want to go back 25-30 years ago". Boys you hear the strangest things about these guys, Roth did some tunes about 2001 w/'em, nothing came of it, they approached Patti Smyth and Mitch Malloy and some other guy to fill in, they did the Gary Cherone thing for a record, etc. Dang. Talk about nuts, too, and that's Eddie Van Halen. You're right - who does get along with him? I'm not saying Roth didn't have an attitude, and, of course, Sammy's his own guy, but makes you wonder just how much of the problems in the group are, and were, Eddie and not anyone else. His interview on Howard Stern, he was saying he cured cancer (probably from meth if you read between the lines), that smoking didn't cause it, that his son is 15 and "spanking it".

True.but the man is nuts though.how bizzare is it that 2-3 years ago he was working in the Bronx by my house as a Paremedic? and hung out in bars in my neighborhood(even as recent as 3 months ago),me unknowing.then hanging out in record stores I go to claiming that he would be worried if nobody approached him for an autograph.gets the radio gig and has security and detectives surround him so you wont get near him.hard guy to figure out.at least I taped myself on radio asking him a question about a prowler in his yard.whats more bizzare is I havnt seen the guy in 13 years! got 5 photos with between 1990-1993.the guy cant sing but is my favorite frontman ever. sf says on 21/Sep/06
Not that I have anything against Roth - I think he and the boys were the best Van Halen. I'm not putting Sammy down, but Roth just had more attitude, presence, etc. Just a better front man. But, man, has he just destroyed his career. He gets the Stern/radio gig, and just screws that up. How many great chances does a guy get?
But, the bluegrass version really was embarrasing. Maybe seeing him doing it live was what made it so - he really just looked out of place. Maybe it's a lot better on the CD. Glenn says on 20/Sep/06

Oh my God - did anybody see David Lee Roth singing a "countrified" version of "Jump" the other night? It was a bunch of fiddle players and banjo players and Roth kind of singing "Jump" to a hoedown beat. There was even a banjo solo. One of the most embarrassing things I have ever seen. I always thought he was like 5'10" too, but Eddie is very thin. He said when he finished recording Fair Warning we only weighed like 125lbs. Eddie and Sammy were on John Stewart in 1996 and they were all around the same height. Well maybe Stewart was slightly shorter than the 2 of them. |
