My manager called: "Marty, how tall are you?" I said, "Six foot", but could tell from his voice that I needed to be smaller. Eventually, I got down to 5ft 9in. He said that Chuck Norris, a well-known actor [and black belt], wanted a British actor for a part in his Walker, Texas Ranger series. Chuck was quite small, even with high-heeled boots and a tall hat. He didn't like his co-stars to be taller.

Days later, the phone rings from the gate and a voice says: "Script for Marvin Jarvis." I asked if he'd leave it under the gate. "No can do. I have to give it to Mr Jarvis personally." I twigged that he might be the producer instead of the courier. I came slouching to the gate, slightly bent, looking no more than 5ft 8 1/2in.

🐈‍⬛ It’s possible that it was only one cat of the Siamese variety!

I’ll have a better look next time…..

My favourite part of the Inspector Morse episode ‘Greeks Bearing Gifts’ is when Morse, who’s looking for a missing baby, hears an ominous noise.

He follows the noise, only to discover that it’s two Siamese cats miaowing on a pool table!

6ft peak and 5ft11 today, though possibly less. Martin doesn’t look the full 6ft in this, but maybe I’m wrong.

An honest six feet exactly at peak. Today maybe close to 5’10”.

I’m watching the Morse episode Greeks Bearing Gifts again, and Martin, as Randall, has just given a lecture to some curious students, with cannabis being mentioned as a requisite in the ship’s supplies. Sounds mighty weird to me!
🥴🚬

We had a workman called Mr Jarvis and he was a doppelgänger for David Bowie, and when I saw him, my jaw dropped. I was in my early 20s at the time.

Martin gets 6ft for his peak and an inch less today.

Actually, Jarvis's Morse character in 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' said, "Farting in the face of Aristophanes."

Aristophanes was a Greek playwright of the comedy genre. He lived from 427BC to 386BC.

Martin stars in the Inspector Morse episode 'Greeks Bearing Gifts'. 🎁

He looks down to the wiley Inspector and mentions one of the quotations, not unlike 'farting in the face of adversity/tyranny' or whatever.

🤣💨...😒..."Gerroff you!" replied Adversity. 😆

I'm not 100% sure by how much, but one thing you can pick up from the scene is that he is quite a bit taller than Morse, actor John Thaw, who was 5ft9, though could have been 5ft8.5 by the time this was filmed, which was the year 1991. Jarvis will have been 49 or 50 back then, (DOB: 4th August, 1941) hence almost certainly at full height, substantiated by the good condition he's in now, and his upright posture back then.

I'd say Martin's peak height was a strong 6ft. It's hard to imagine that he's 80 now! Judging from the picture above, Martin's faired very well. He can have 5ft11 for today's height, but I don't totally rule out the possibility that he's only lost three-quarters of an inch, even at 80.

So sorry, Rob! I was getting Tom Baker and Colin Baker mixed up. 🐀 Eek - they're not even related, and poles apart height-wise!
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 21/Sep/21
😉 Colin Baker could edge out most actors, and had he had a 'standing up' part in Blackadder, wherein he played Captain Rum, his 6ft3 would have fitted in perfectly among the taller members of the Blackadder cast.

Yes, I've observed Martin in a great many TV shows. He appeared in the Inspector Morse episode 'Greeks Bearing Gifts', which was made in 1991, so Martin will very likely have stood his optimal height of 6ft, seeming as he's only lost an inch at the age of 80. 😁

Great to see Martin has a page! 👌😄

He's starred in so much over the years.

6ft peak and an inch less now.

Yeah he popped up quite a lot in TV shows during the years. I did remember he once appeared in Doctor Who, arguably Colin Baker could edge him out a fraction, but it was close in height between them.
