What you got to take into account is the average irish guys height has increased greatly in the last 20 years.
If you look at 40y old irish guys on holiday, you will conclude Irish people are on the short side.
If you look at 20y old irish guys on holiday, they are about average for northern europe, similar and actually a bit taller than the average British guy.

It is due to the economic boom (which has now been of course extinguished) and also the change in attitudes that went with it.

James not entirely true I was on holidays last year in a brittish resort and I also found the brits to be very short im 184 and i was taller than almost everyone of them i past so the UK isnt full of giants either,all the british i know are short and stocky

eh not true at all in the slightest I am an Irish native from Dublin when I go into the city im taller than alot of people there btw I'm 184cm tall but in the inner city alot of households and areas in and around the city are effected by drugs,poerty and lack of the right nutrtion but when im normal suburbs of Dublin I feel very average and alot of people tower over me.

I've also noticed that in smaller rural towns in ireland people tend to be shorter but where I live in Dublin the average height for a young male 18+ is atleast 5'10

Britsni, it isn't stereotyping to say a race is smaller than average. Some races just happen to be smaller than others.

Why do so many like to think of the " Irish" as little people ? I think Walt Disney is taken too seriously or is that a lot of English men like to stereotype others. Define what you mean by" Irish' they are genetically , geographically , historically British. The English as we know them today are the most mongral of all the British peoples. I got news for you, leprechauns dont exist, not al scotch men have fussy giner hair, bad teeth and drink whiskey, not all englishmen are untrustworthy, or prance around in tights and fluffy slippers ringing bells ..... Stop Stereotyping , ( oh ps the scots came form Ulster) go figure

5'7" is pretty cool.I mean I am Indian but I have traveled to singapore which also has an average height of 5'7".You will of course feel tall if u are 6 feet and above but if it it not so uncommon to bump into anyone 6 feet and above from time to time and also recently it is not so uncommon to find youth above 190cm.
