In his own words, "On a really good day, I'm five feet short. It's pretty difficult for me to play anything but the little guy. I don't play a good victim so I'm always the nasty little guy.". From his movies it's clear he's under 5 feet, even his Twins co-star Arnold described him as being only 4ft 9. In 2011 Danny was more specific, and now says he is "4'11 and three quarters".

I've been very lucky so far. Every character I ever played was five feet tal. Of course there are some limitations. For example, I'm probably never gonna get to do the life story of Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
In School, other kids would often tease me and make jokes about my height. But in my acting career, I've learned that size doesn't really make any difference as long as it's a good role.
One of my problems was to make people in my profession understand there are parts for short actors. After all there are short and tall lovers; short tyrants, small doctors. Size shouldn't be an issue for an actor, and it isn't any more as far as my career is concerned.

Even Guinness inflate heights? Well then the tallest and shortest man's height in the world are probably exaggerated too. It's frustrating how most people even this so called "accurate organization" doesn't care about accuracy when it comes to height. I seriously don't get what's so hard about getting a stadiometer to measure properly.

He has shrunk a lot for someone his stature. I would have thought that someone his stature almost do not shrink when getting old because of a very short spine. How do you explain that he has shrunk 1 inch ?

Could you be four foot ten and then go around bullying people and get away with it, and not also carry a gun?

DeVito is an amazingly talented actor and if he stood on his talent and charisma he'd be 20 feet tall and change.

Rob I live in Atlanta, and saw Danny Devito at a hotel in February. He was here for the super bowl no doubt. His head came a little above my shoulder like it does here with Kaitlin Olson. I wasn't wearing heels like her of course lol, I'm a guy. Would you say I'm 5'8 or 5'9?

If you look up his kids' heights and Rhea's height and look at them in pictures, it's hard to put him anywhere NEAR five feet tall.

There are more people over six foot six on this website than there are less than five feet. This is the reverse of what I see everyday in the Canadian city where I live. People five tall or less are quite common here, although many are ethnically Asian, whereas extremely tall people are comparatively rare.

He simply is Danny DeVito and absolutely unique - as we all would like to think we are but aren't necessarily so. Mentally I link him with Joe Pesci who could play as scary a character as anyone could imagine.

How much height do you think Kaitlin is gaining from her heels in that photo, Rob? Trying to work out where a 4 ft 9er like Danny would come up to on a 5 ft 8er like you under the same conditions. Comparing to Melissa Rauch's photo who is only 1.5" taller it looks like about the bottom of your chin at the very lowest, but then I look at Deep Roy's photo and he seems way over 5 inches below that point to me. It's confusing me but then I'm not good at telling these things. Thanks!

I like Danny DeVito acting ability - having been around several great actors i'm a lite more informed than some ind's on m ma my actors must put up with to avoid being type cast.
I knew James Best whp played sheriff on Dukes of Hazzard, on a personal level & he moved to Jackson,Miss. back in the late 1960s & 70s, helped set up new stage/old little theater in Jaxn, Ms & we double dated, fished & partied together for several yrs.
James Best was a great actor ad was my Cousin Merrell Williams who had a PhD in acting was instrumental in bringing down big tobacco companies in 1990's. The movie The Insider, was made about Merrell bringing down big tobacco cos. James Best & Merrell commented to me many times that often actors guard constantly to not be type cast as this can reduce how a studio looks at them for movie roles.

I like Danny DeVito acting ability - having been around several great actors i'm a lite more informed than some ind's on m ma my actors must put up with to avoid being type cast.
I knew James Best whp played sheriff on Dukes of Hazzard, on a personal level & he moved to Jackson,Miss. back in the late 1960s & 70s, helped set up new stage/old little theater in Jaxn, Ms & we double dated, fished & partied together for several yrs.
James Best was a great actor ad was my Cousin Merrell Williams who had a PhD in acting was instrumental in bringing down big tobacco companies in 1990's. The movie The Insider, was made about Merrell bringing down big tobacco cos. James Best & Merrell commented to me many times that often actors guard constantly to not be type cast as this can reduce how a studio looks at them for movie roles.

I've heard all sorts about Danny's height but never have I heard that he's this near to the ground!
He still manages all types of roles despite this diminutive height! He hasn't let him ruin his career or his confidence so I think he is worthy of a great deal of respect! He certainly has mine!

This is when it gets to the point where when someone walks up to you and asks you how tall you are, instead they ask you how short you are. In the Nespresso commercial, George Clooney and Danny DeVito walk side by side. Danny is about an inch or so below George's shoulder. I am 6' tall, and my wife is 4'10", and she is even with the top of my shoulder. George is only 5'11'', which leads me to think that Danny is maybe 4' 7.5" tall, if that. In a couple of shots in the commercial, Danny looks like he might even be only 4' 6", because he really makes George look really, really tall.

I think he's a great actor and have met him and Rhea and they are both way below 5 foot tall. My wife is 5' nothing so I know what that looks like. As a executive jet pilot we were in very close proximity. I'm guessing 4' 8"...

But okay, y'got me, many tall people are long-lived. But I would bet that a statistical analysis would show that, over five foot four, height is inversely proportional to longevity. I suspect that one of the reasons women live longer than men is because of their smaller size.

Very short guy, but he seems healthy. That is, his height is not the result of some syndrome that is associated with a heart defect, or something like that. I have a theory that healthy short people have an advantage in longevity, and it will be interesting to see how long DeVito lives. Except that I'm unlikely to find out, as I'm unusually tall, and won't outlive him.

Just had a look in passing and on tip toes where I can reach 6'4" in shoes like Hasselhoff mentioned below, a person with a height of 4 ft 10 inches would come up to just below my heart level. The picture below would indicate that Devito is not a bit over this and actually a little shorter, more like 4'9". He has never looked 5 ft even in his prime I think.

If either Danny Devito or Gary Coleman would get limb lengthening surgery and wear lifts, I think the fascination would re-awaken their carreers. Danny could pull off 4'9.5"+3"surgery+3"lifts=5'3.5" (basically Michael J. Fox height) and Gary could pull off 4'8"+3"surgery+3"lifts=5'1". Nobody would blame either one of them for the surgery and noone has to know about the lifts. I think they would get alot of role offers just out of fascination.

I was astonished to read that he is infact my height. Wow! Now I REALLY have a height complex.. is that how short I really ook? When I saw him standing in a restaurant against people who were stting, I thought he MUST be quite a bi shorter than me. Yikes1 I always knew I was short,now I realise I am practically miniture. I'm 5'2, and I don't look THAT short! Danny Devito always looks really short, especially compared to other people. He must be under 5 foot, I'd say 4'11 atleast. If I was an inch or so under 5 foot I'd most likely say I was 5 foot, round it up. I think that's probably what he does. There's a difference in people's reactions if you say 4 foot something to 5 foot. I think people think aslong as your in the 5 foot range it's not a big thing.

I doubt he's 4ft 10. Maybe 4ft 11 1/2 at the very least. Former Secretary of the Treasury Robert Reich is 4ft 10 1/2 and he looks like he has a hard time carrying himself. That would mean he's shorter than him by 1/2 and inch and he's pretty tiny.

He really fits to that "penguin" character in Batman. Danny DeVito came great as a comedian and been known in the world despite his height, at least short people can take DeVito as an inspiration that we could excel no matter how small we are.

In Relative strangers he was about 3 inches shorter than Kathy Bates who is 5'3" tall barefoot. So 5' is just right. In batman returns Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't exactly tower over him and she's 5'8" tall. I didnt realize Danny was so tiny. Danny obviously has been shrinking over the years. I think he was possibly 5 feet tall in his prime but he may be only 4ft 8 according to this picture. If he was 5'1" he would be 2" shorter than christina ricci with her heels on and his shoes on cuz she is 5'1", in that pic he looks 5"-6" inches shorter which would make him 3"-4" inches shorter if they were both barefoot (were assuming Christina has 3 inch heels.)therefore 3"-4" inches minus 5'1" leaves you with 4'10" and 4'9" respectfully, if you don't beleive me just look at the pic that rob posted carefully and allow your finger to go from danny's head to christina's head and not the the differance... the top of his head is below her eyes.

If he was 5'1" he would be 2" shorter than christina ricci with her heels on and his shoes on cuz she is 5'1", in that pic he looks 5"-6" inches shorter which would make him 3"-4" inches shorter if they were both barefoot (were assuming Christina has 3 inch heels.)therefore 3"-4" inches minus 5'1" leaves you with 4'10" and 4'9" respectfully, if you don't beleive me just look at the pic that rob posted carefully and allow your finger to go from danny's head to christina's head and not the the differance... the top of his head is below her eyes.

Definately no taller than 4'10. He looked tiny in his Friends cameo and none of the Friends girls are very tall.
