How tall was Denis Norden

Denis Norden's Height

6ft 2 ¾ (189.9 cm)

English TV presenter and comedy writer, best remembered for hosting It'll Be Alright on the Night.
Being six foot two at the age of thirteen, I had no difficulty disguising myself as an adult.
[Frank Muir] was six foot four, one and a quarter inches taller than me - not two inches as he always averred; I am six foot two and three-quarters - and he had the same willowy, some would say skinny, build with, as he liked to put it, 'shoulders like a hock bottle'.

Actually looking closely at the above photo I get what Rob means about Frank's higher eye level...it does add to the illusion of a bigger height difference. Maybe there is some truth in Denis's quote

Put it this way, I don't think the difference between them was as big as say Fry and Laurie who they automatically remind me of...two tall guys but one somehow makes the other seem average height...I thought for years Laurie was like 5ft11!

I remember that programme. He looks tall, but Muir looks a good 2 inches taller without a doubt. Maybe Norden lost height where Muir didn't, or at least not up until that point in time.

@ Rob - Exactly! So they're giving fractions so that people think they're doing this out of a keen interest in being spot-on about their height, but really they're fake fractions! Hmmmmm.... makes sense! ๐Ÿ˜œ

Frank maybe 6'4 1/2 peak not sure if he look 6'5 with Denis Norden.

Great listing. In Frank Muir's autobiography he says he's 6'6". This may be rounding up or before age and a broken leg from practice parachuting reduced it slightly. I'd certainly go 6'5" and nearly 6'3" for Denis Norden. As a very tall writing partnership they're on a par with Cleese and Chapman. Also interesting to reference Ray Galton and Alan Simpson (Hancock, Steptoe & Son) - both around the 6'4" mark.

Rob, do you think there was in actuality 2in between these guys rather than just one and bit?
Editor Rob
maybe there was a little more than the 1.25...

So he was basically already his peak adult height at 13? lol
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Mar/21
oh so he actually claimed 6ft6...6ft4 flat looks a bit low but 6ft6 barefoot I have a hard time believing aswell...in shoes I can see that. 2in between him and Denis I think unless he wore lifts which I doubt

Rob, maybe 6ft5?
Editor Rob
maybe he was that range and shrank earlier than you'd think...

@ Rob - I never really thought about it like that, using fractions as a means of adding height, but it does seem like the sort of idea which could easily be believed by the gullible, i.e. me!
Editor Rob
yeah, for many people it might create the mindset like "the person is giving fractions, so they are being specific and seem accurate."
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 4/Mar/21
@ Rob - Yes, it's a good thing to see the celebs, or anyone for that matter, including the fractions when they talk about their own height, I couldn't agree more. In some cases, you get people saying 'just under' or 'just over', but to see someone giving the exact figure complete with fractions means that a keen interest is shown in the subject, and that they are perfectionists in all manner of things. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ
Editor Rob
sometimes it can mean they did measure that mark...but others have used fractions as a way to add height. I don't think Norden seems a guy who would inflate height.

What a fantastic addition, Rob! I certainly watched his programmes but I never had any idea how far he stood from the ground...

That is until now, so 6ft2.75 it is!

He always seemed a pleasant chap when presenting those TV shows, though I wasn't really paying attention to height much back then...I only saw his quote the other day when looking for another quote and it's always interesting when a celebrity has used fractions.

I do think he'd lost height by the 1990's

@Progking184

They both had already lost about 1/2" from that 1993 gettyimages put up by Rob.

Looks 3.5-4 inches smaller than 6'4 Frank Muir but its probably just the picture. I can believe 6'2.5-6'3, or Frank actually was taller than 6'4
