People actually lose height as they age. I used to be 5 feet 2 inches when I was in my 20s. I have suffered from back problems. Now I am almost 60 years old, and I am 5 feet. I lost 2 inches from discs in my back compressing. If I remember correctly, George Michael had back surgery. This would change his height if a vertebrae were indeed removed as he reported. He could have easily been 6 feet tall, then decreased as much as 2 inches after that time.
This is what happened to my own father. While in active service with the military, he was 6ft 1 inches, now he is a mere 5 ft 11 inches. Just saying!

I've known George for 20 years and he was definitely 5 11 inches tall. When he lost weight he always looked taller, His weight did factuate which when he was a bit heavier he naturally looked shorter. Age was also a factor as we do get a bit shorter with the years. I am 6 feet 1 inch and he was a few inches shorter then myself.

I saw George Michael once in a Nite-club (in the late 1980's). I am 6 feet tall and he was almost exactly the same height as me. I did take heel height into consideration.

I think 5'11 would be viewed as tall to shorter people for the most part. If you are 5'11 and having longer legs opposed to a longer torso, you may be called tall occasionally.

Editor Rob yes James, a proportion will view it as tall, or at least tallish. It's in that range of transitioning from upper average to near the bottom range of tall.

Tonight on the Brit Awards, there was a beautiful tribute to George by his fellow 'Wham' members, Andrew Ridgeley, Pepsi and Shirley, taking the viewers right back to Christmas Day when he died.
Afterwards, there was a George Michael song performed by Coldplay's Chris Martin and towards the end, you could see George on a big screen singing the song at the same time.
It was all rather too emotional to take in heights, although when he was singing in the background, I thought "this guy was never under 5ft11 - not when he did this recording!"
It was good to see Andrew again! He looked fit and tanned. I think he was a tiny bit shorter than George in their videos.
I'm going to put 5ft11 for him. There's a bit of speculation going on about his being a full 6ft at the onset of his career among the comments I've just read. I think it's not impossible, though half an inch under could be more realistic.

Agree with the opinion. One thing that P's me off is how all the newspapers, magazines, internet etc say about 'oh it's obvious all the gay messages hidden in his songs when you look back'. Obvious, really? George himself wasn't certain about his sexuality until his late 20s, and has said many times that only after that point were some of his songs about men (and some were quite clearly that). Why must people try and feel smug by reading things into stuff that was never there? Life, and people, never that simple I'm afraid.

5 '11 seems spot on. George was also thin at his peak - which helps in being perceived as taller. And latterly always wore thick heeled / bottomed shoes (giving a 6 '1 impression :)

I think George Michael is a fine looking man with the perfect most normal height for a guy like him. Speaking for myself, I'm a bit over 6'7 (2.01 m) and I sometimes envy his definitely smaller height then me. Judging his height though, there's no doubt he's 1.80.. I live in sweden where everyone is actually very tall today.. especially in my school where the average height for boys are between 1.85-1.95 cm.. I'm just a lucky chap for being over 2 metres :P

Maybe the spanish TV host thought that George was taller, like 6'1" (1m85) or something like that and he was surprised that George was not that tall. But I'm sure that George is about 5'11"1/2 (1m82). On "YouTube" site, you can see a duo George Michael/Paul Young. Paul Young is 1m91 and you will see that George is not so much shorter compared to him, proving that George is definitely over 1m80.

I know about those growth spurts. I just recently had one at age 40 when I went from 5'8" to 5'10" with shoe inserts. It was amazing.
