Freddie was unique, had long legs like a supermodel, music and voice was seriously awesome. It's a massive loss we lost him over thirty years ago.The memories are still with us and I really love what he did.Would've been great I reckon if back in time he starred in a movie, I reckon even in film he could charismaticaly pull it off.Freddie I'd give five nine like Bowie, but Roger I buyed five ten and a half over thirty years ago.

Probably, was 177 in the morning. I believe Freddie!

Christopher Lambert appears next to Freddy on stage at 1:17, while Freddy is singing "princes of the universe", He has to look down at Mercury, there's a three inch difference there. How come he makes Freddy look 5'7?. Truth be told Mercury was in the habit of wearing thin sole sneakers on stage, anyway I can't see him over 5'8. Maybe I should see more of him but 5'9 is still a bit inflated, in my opinion, he might've been 5'7-5'8.

I’ve just been on the phone to my Jim. As I walked into the lounge, he could hear Freddie singing ‘Somebody to Love’. He said, “Tell Freddie to shut up!”

If only I could; I’m sure he’d have found it most amusing!

⭐️ Jim saw Queen in Rio - I think! - travelling specifically there for the purpose, with a mate of his. Of course they were fantastic, which was only to be expected, and worth every penny. ⭐️

5ft9.25. Yes, I’ve upped him since last time.

I’ve been watching an edition of Pointless, and a couple of answers left me gasping to hear Queen’s ‘Lily of the Valley’, from their third album, ‘Sheer Heart Attack’.

The first was a Shakespearean question as to which title characters die in their plays. One of them was Richard the Third, who uttered when his horse was killed and he ran maniacally across Bosworth Field, “A horse! A horse! My Kingdom for a horse!”

The second answer was lily of the valley, cited as a flower which grows wild.

The connection was that in the Queen song ‘Lily of the Valley’, Freddie sings the lyrics, ‘I’ve followed every course; my Kingdom for a horse…’ and this quotation comes from the song ‘Lily of the Valley’.

5ft9.

Ergo, I simply HAD to listen to it!

Here we go: Questionnaire from the mid-70s with all of the Band member's heights and weights. Freddie was purportedly 5'10" and a mere 119lbs. Click Here
Editor Rob
118 pounds at 5ft 9 is skinny enough, but if he were 5ft 10 at that weight!

@ Mjkop and Rob. The highest he could measure was i guess at 177 cm out of bed and 176 for a 10 o clock morning measurement.
Rapha said on 16/Mar/22
Hi Rob

He is listed at 177 cm online. Do you think that he inflated a bit his height ?
Editor Rob
I still feel he could have added half an inch
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 16/Mar/22
I woke up after my afternoon nap with a Queen song in my head, so I’m listening to Queen II right now. The song that was lodged in my head is ‘The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke’, but the whole album is Queen at their heaviest best.

Freddie was as lean as a whippet hound - my Mum loved his ‘figure’, as she called it! That did give him the impression of being taller, but 5ft9.25 for his peak is the figure I will settle for…..

@Matt99 Not an unreasonable argument, I'll have to look at it more.
Matt99 said on 9/Jan/22
@Honest 5’11 not a completely unrealistic guess, but I think Rob is right about Roger having the edge over Freddie, so 176 is very possible. Deacy has looked shorter more times than taller with Freddie, I’d buy 173-4cm range for him. For Brian, I could buy the full 6’2 peak but his hair does give him a taller impression.

Rob,

See how he appears next to Roger Taylor in that photo just below.

He's actually giving off a 5' 10"+ impression there - and they're all without footwear!

Could he indeed have been the 5' 9.75" he claimed and just been a 'posture guy'... ?
Editor Rob
in that photo he pulled off 5ft 9.5-10 range even accounting for the tilt... although Brian is a few inches behind them.

I can't complain when the music channel put a bit of Queen on either. 😆👍

I got into their 80s stuff, always having preferred their 70s music, when I stayed at my Dad's. The showmanship of Freddie Mercury was second to none, as every video proved.

So reed-slim, he looked a strong 5ft10 oftentimes enough, but I'm going with 5ft9.25.

I've been listening to some Queen videos, and very brilliant they are too. All the members of Queen were very fond of Jimi Hendrix and Freddie's favourite song of his was 'House Burning Down'.

Freddie was also very fond of cats and owned five. When asked whether his girlfriend, Mary, and him would be thinking of having a kid one day, he replied, "Frankly, I'd rather have another cat!"

Queen were very popular in Japan and in the song 'Teo Torriatte/Let Us Cling Together', from the album 'A Day At The Races', Freddie wrote a verse in Japanese to show his appreciation for the fans. Lovely guy!

5ft9.25. He could look taller because of his svelte figure. 🎵🎧🎶🐈🐈

On my 19th Birthday, on the way home from work, I met a girl at a train station and she lived down the same road as Freddie; of course, I was absolutely fascinated 🙊 to hear that, and asked her all about him. She agreed that he was as lean as a whippet hound, but said that no way was he as tall as I suggested, which was 6ft.

They've done scientific tests on his voice and have confirmed how extraordinary it was with the vibrations. Most geniuses in their given fields are freaks with some kind of trait which allows them to excel at something, some people genuinely are gifted. I would be surprised if he had a four octave range though, my range is E2 to F#5 in head voice, just over three octaves and I'm a good singer!!
I didbn't think he looked 118 lb skinny, at least not how I think of him as he was c.1986. looked 150-160 pounds I thought.

In fact 5’9” isn’t by any mean short, nowadays it’s the average height in the world along with 5’8” and 5’10”
5’7” is where the ‘short’ term starts

I give Freddie 5’9” he was tall by the average England height of that time

Funny thing is that the 5'9" guys on here that are guessed taller seem my height proportion wise like at the end of bohemian rhapsody when they where showing the orginal band perform nothing is going to stop us now he looked like me proportionally when I'm thinner in built. Another guy like that is Jared Leto and he is guessed taller too. Do you think him and Leto on a hard working day I'm not talking afternoon but maybe at the end of the day do you think they could drop like a millimeter or a quarter inch if really working hard.

Freddie has been entertaining me for the past 5 days! What a STAR! I love him so much!

I must admit that I did see him as taller than 5ft9, but then he was extremely lean. My Mum would watch his TV performances and remark, "Hasn't he got a wonderful figure?"

In fact, she was quite entranced; I saw her face! 😍

Five foot nine for this original genius.

PS He loved cats! How could I possibly not love him? 🐆🐈🐱🐈🐅

Freddie was slim (his partner, Jim Hutton, said that he had a 28" waist), which probably made him appear taller. I would agree with 5'9" - that would be my best guess - but look at the pictures from the British Awards in 1990. He's noticeably shorter than the rest of his bandmates on that stage. So it's hard to say.
JD 5'9" said on 10/Mar/19

after I saw them in 1978, I was actually surprised at how short he looked. I was right up against the stage and I would have thought around 5'5" at the absolute most, wouldn't have been surprised if he was 5'2".... so 5'9" surprises me. i'll just chalk it up to being 17, and pleasantly tripped :)
Sandy Cowell said on 5/Feb/19

Rob, how likely that he was indeed 5'9 and 3/4 ? He had good proportions ratio, long legs and short torso, people always assumed him being taller than he was.
Editor Rob
From all I've seen I would still place him nearer 5ft 9 flat than almost 5ft 10.
Powerhouse said on 2/Jan/19
He had lanky proportions, in pics by himself he looks easily taller than 5’9. He had fairly long legs and a slim build which helped this illusion. I’d estimate he was a bit over 5’9.

Jtm said on 13/Dec/18
when was he shorter than michael jackson? i have only seen pictures jackson looks taller when he was closer to the camera and we are not even sure about the footwear but if anything there are pictures of mercury looking slightly taller when they are standing side by side but again this depends on the footwear. i would give mercury a weak 5'9 and jackson 5'8.
James Keffer said on 11/Dec/18
He's shorter than MJ so I don't think he was quite a flat 5'9. Probably a weak 5'9.
Matt99 said on 10/Dec/18
Rob which would you think he’d measure closer to 5’8.75 than 5’9.25? Sometimes he looks a weak 5’9 then looks 5’9 flat. Roger also had to be a weak 5’9 for sure, all their footwear were up and down in the 70s/80s so it’s hard to pin down.
Editor Rob
It's hard to say weak or strong...I've always felt about 5ft 9 seemed to fit overall for him. At times he could look a bit more or less though.
Greg99 said on 28/Nov/18

Hi. By comparison I can safely say Fred was the 5'9 3/4 the fan club had him listed as as I met John Deacon and chatted for a while in the late 90's & he was exactly the same height as me, if not a fraction taller. He wasn't wearing lifts, just normal trainer shoes. I'm 5' 11 & 1/2. I met Brian in 2010.....He was a couple of inches taller at most but in flat shoes so he is the 6'1 & 1/2 the fan club said. I also stood near Rog who I spotted in an audience at Cowes week relatively recently - he was a touch shorter but not much - so again 5' 10 spot on. There you go. Brian 6'1 & 1/2. John: 5' 11 & 1/2, Roger 5' 10, probably 5' 10 & 1/2 in 80s, Fred 5' 9 & 3/4. All true. All accurate. End of.
Bilbo Baggins said on 5/Nov/18
I am so disappointed that Rami Malek was chosen to portray Freddie Mercury in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' film. They should have cast Aussie impersonator/proper lookalike, John Blunt, instead! Malak, at 5' 7" and looking like a sickly Raul Julia, looks NOTHING like Freddie. Nothing. Freddie Mercury was larger than life, and this movie has turned him into a short-**** waif with dodgy (and insulting) teeth prosthetics!

Freddie Mercury was so lean that I definitely was kidded into thinking he was taller! Also, I would compare him to Brian May, who was 6ft4 according to my teenagers' magazines, and the least I would have expected was 5ft11, but I have noted that Brian, also very lean, is nowhere near as tall as I had previously read!

Re. Freddie Mercury: I would suggest around 5'8.75" to 5'9" area. He is nicely proportioned, but I think others report Freddie having very long legs due to his small head and often stripey pants. Such makes legs look much longer.

Once a very talented artist passes, they are escalated to the very best. I was always a Queen fan, in particular Freddie Mercury - there would be no Queen if there were no Freddie. If he wasn't gay, he would never performed the way he did. Flamboyance is not for the quiet types. Michael Jackson died, he was supposed to be the greatest performer. No matter who is the greatest. They entertained, inspired and motivated us. There will be no other Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley etc. But thank God those people did what they did

During the first period of Queen, in the early-mid'70s, Freddie and the rest of the band wore platforms, which were fashionable for rockstars in the glam rock era. Plus Freddie was really thin those days, which also made an impression of him being much taller than he really was. Later, he switched to flat shoes, mostly Adidas sneakers.

About the same as 5'10 Christopher Lambert (whom I think you met Rob), maybe a hair under.
the more I think about it, the more I picture something like that:
Freddie 176/177, John 176/177, Roger 179/180, Brian 189/190
I think Queen is one of the few rock bands that are not overestimated heightwise.

How about Freddie always looked around his height (around 5'11).I still think that Freddie was 5'9.75-5'10.
Martyr said on 16/Oct/11
@reality John is certainly not 5'11. He always looked to be around freddie's height, if not a little shorter. 5'10.5 is indeed spot on for roger (I would not rule out 180cm at peak). Freddie at 5'9.75 sounds right to me too. Even very ill, he didn't look 2 inches shorter than 5'11.5 George Michael.
I still believe Brian was (maybe a weak) 6'3 at peak.
Gil said on 13/Sep/11
To Alex,

We, the world, couldn't care less about how tall you are; same goes for every comment with "I'm x feet tall" post that doesn't start with "I've met him personnally, and in comparison...".

This is a site where we discuss the height of celebrities. I never heard of you. Your height is irrelevant.
Jime said on 9/Sep/11
I thought he was going to be about 6'0. I dont care about his height, but he always had such a big presence in the stage that made him look magestic :)
Bomi said on 1/Sep/11
1. Freddie's middle name is Bomi, his father's first name.
2. Freddie's "powerful" look onstage has less to do with his physical fitness (which helped), than an essential part of successful acting: projecting a presence, or concept of a character. Great actors use every muscle in their body in blocking onstage (think about stories where costars touch an actor during a play, and found their entire body was tense, living in the moment of the character.)
Reality said on 25/Aug/11
It's just very uncivil to get here and start downgrading some legend who is dead. What a shame.Btw Brian May is 6'1.5 and was strong 6'2 at his peak,Roger Taylor is 5'10.5,John Deacon is 5'11.Freddie looked almost same height with them except Brian May.5'9.75-5'10 sounds really accurate.
ShWa. Jeremy said on 29/Jun/11
I think the 5'9" is good. (I don't care about those ".5", ".25", ".75" hub-bubs.) I've been watching Queen concerts and held them as my number 1 for 19 years (since my age of 12) and he was slim to begin with and decently fit into the 80s. His concert showmanship made him out to be gigantic, but I could always tell that Dr. May was taller, even with May's usual slouch.

In their years 5'9" was still taller than average; I slide from 5'9" - 5'11" (part of a disabling condition causes the fluxs.) 5'8" was average US height into my early adulthood, now I hear it is 5'10" (in The USA).

I do think his buid, fitness, and posture helped his powerful appearance. As to Sacha Baron Cohen, his height seems to me to be the primary factor for the role. I think, personally, he looks the part. As to the singing, that was impressive to hear him as (what was it, Perelli?) the other barber in the Johnny Depp "Sweeny Todd"; but no Freddie Mercury for sure.
peter said on 15/Jun/11
Freddie was a legend but not a physically large man - from extensive videos available I would say he's about 170cm (5 foot 7 inch)

So he was not big - so what!
He was a musical genius!!

I'm not entirely sure where this 5ft 9 figure originates, but I don't think it's right. In January 1986 I went to a party at Freddie's mansion and met the chap. My first thought was how tiny he was. I am 5ft 5 and half and I was never one for heels so would not have been more than 5ft 7 in my shoes. He was at eye level with me.

5'8 is too low for freddie. i would say he was always a solid 5'9 and i doubt he ever shrunk as he died aged 45, which is obviously too young for shrinkage. the problem is the and photos are deceiving. brian always looks the tallest by far but then john will look a fair bit taller than freddie and then he looks smaller than him in another photo.

Very interesting find from Nadia, 9 stone is light indeed even for a short chap. Freddie did have very long legs and a shortish body so that would naturally make him lighter. He was quite muscular though especially in the early and mid eighties. He must have weighed next to nothing when before he died, very sad.

As I said before Freddie was 5'9". Apart from his early "glam rock" days and the music video for "I Want to Break Free" he never wore heels or lifts, because he simply didn't had to. He was a huge personality and could appear as a really big guy in spite of his height. He even went on stage barefoot sometimes, but he usually wore Adidas or other brand sports shoes.

John Deacon is also a modest 5'9" which can be seen in videos, Roger Taylor is 5'10", Brian May is 6'1" with his hair making him look like 6'2".
Angela said on 25/Sep/08
He was 5-9. Just because your a certain race, doesn't mean you will always be a height characteristic of that race. In fact, his father was taller than he was, and a bigger man, weight wise than Freddie. Read Mercury and Me, by his lover Jim. Freddie was 5-9, but his features were small and he was quite diminitive. Although 5-9 doesn't seem that short, he had extremely slim arms and legs. He was lengthy and looks tall in video, because of his body shape.
Big King said on 23/Sep/08

Fabio said on 21/Aug/08
Well i think he was 5'7. And when he put in on sneakers he was around 5'8. His slender figure makes him look like a giant. Usually skinny people have the illusion of making themselves seem taller then they truly are. Take for example Jennifer conelly. She looks like 5'10 but in reality is 5'6. Freddie comes from Indian sub continent which has a history of malnutrition and protein starvation.
I think his true height is 5'7.
Guru65 said on 9/Aug/08
I spent some time around Freddie in the mid eighties. I am 174 cm and would say that he was a whisker taller than me. (I thnk he usually wore sneakers) So 175 sounds pretty accurate. He had a very slight frame so the initial impression was " What a little guy" but when you stood next to him he wasn't really that short.

The two of them look the same height in the video. But, Bono needs the height of boots and a mullet to match up to freddie.
Eddie said on 14/May/08
Bono never was 5'7'' in his entire life. 5'6'' is the best his able to claim for.

His mullet makes him taller than Freddy.

My point was that comparing with Bono, Freddy seems 5'8'' on those vid. But in shoes!

So barefoot he was around 5'7 1/2''.
Pretty clear for me. Though, it's just my pesonal opinion...
beatlefan said on 14/May/08
I think some of the posters on here should be ashamed, the man was a legend and died in the worst possible way. He clearly did NOT wear lifts he always wore flat sneakers and sometimes barefoot on stage and in videos. I know from personal experience that people with a long term wasting disease lose some height as well as weight due to the muscle wastage. He was a strong 5'9" before about 1989 and the reason he looks around the same height as Bono is because Bono has huge heels on and huge hair. Bono was probably around 5'7" in 1984 anyway, 5'6" now. I know an asian guy who is over six feet tall, and another I work with is 5'11".
vbgodd said on 13/May/08
I am not judging Freddie's height by Bono's hair. I am just pointing out that Bono's mullet is adding an inch(plus) to his own height and Freddie is still slightly taller. 3:04 yes freddie who is wearing flat tennis shoes is level with Bono's mullet, even when BOno is wearing 2" cowboy boots.
Eddie said on 13/May/08

I diasagree with you.
#1 As I have mentioned, they're standing almost in a line.
Yes, at the beginning Freddy stands right behind Bono. And eveb seems to be a half of inch smaller.
But few seconds later Freddy comes closer and at 2:27 they stand in a line, shoulder to shoulder.
At that moment Freddy seems no more than 1 inch taller than Bono.

#3 Bono's hair is nothing to talk about. I'm not asking you to judge of his height by a top of his mullet.
It's obvious that Freddy is a little taller. But no more than 0.5 inch. And, please, don't forget that he's also in shoes.

Anyway, I still think that barefoot he was no taller than 5'8'' or 5'8 1/2'' tops.

P.S.
At 3:04 you can see Freddy with his arm around Bono's shoulders.
It's obvious that they're of the same height, even thought Bono's hair is higher.
vbgodd said on 12/May/08
Eddie, in your video Bono is #1 a good step or two infront of freddie, #2wearing atleast 2in heels, and #3his hair is adding on some extra height and Freddie still manages to look the same height or even half an inch taller (give or take)
Eddie said on 11/May/08
vegetable man, are you sure that he never did?

Here's a video of the Live Aid final.

At 2:21 - 2:30 you can see him standing close to Bono, who is 167 tops.
Bono was in a cowboy shoes those day, so he was 173 max (or even a bit less). And Freddie was in a flat sport shoes, which could add him 1 or 1.5 cm max in height.
Now you can obviously see that they're of identical height. Freddie seems a little smaller, but he stands a half step far.
Judging by this, I would never buy that Freddie was 175 or even 177 barefoot.

5'8'' seems to be his correct height.
vegetable man said on 7/May/08
He has very long arms and legs for his height. Not just legs, look at his arms too.

They make him look 5'10, 5'11. He certainly doesn't look any shorter than 5'9, and standing next to a variety of other people, he never really looked short.

5'7? No way.
hh said on 7/May/08

Indians can be very tall or very short. They fall under the standard deviation. Freddy was a Parsi ( a people that is closely related to Indians) and he did change his name. He was probably of average height, 5'9 seems right since he does not look like a shrimp next to any of his band mates. Could be the TALENT Freddy had. This seems rather silly.

Heh Einstein. Does interracial marrying ring a bell. If you look at the Mendel experiment. You will notice that a short pea plant crossed with tall pea plant has the likely hood of making a tall pea plant and short pea plant. Every generation is likely to have a short pea plant in it, only if the short or tall pea plant is not dominant. Freddie's ancestors have been living in India for 2000 years. Hes bound to be shorter compared to normal Iranian. Did you know that some Indians have Persian blood and are still short. Please learn to read history before you start talking out of your ass. Freddie was short 5'7. In shoes close to 5'9. Be Realistic.
MoreLikely said on 8/Mar/08
"Realistic", you don't know anything about science. Human height is a gaussian distribution and it varies quite a lot, so having an Indian more than three inches above the Indian average is certainly not any more impossible than a European above 6 foot 1. But for the sake of argument if you merely look at the second and third generation descendents of Indian immigrants in the UK you'll see that they're about the same as the UK average which suggests the Indian lower average is due to nutrition.

You must be joking. I'm 100% Indian and I'm 5'10". Both my brothers are two inches taller than me. My father is 5'6" and my mother is 5'4. Face it. There are far too many variables of which you are unaware for you to "scientifically" conclude anything. That said, 5'9" sounds right to me.

Realistic said on 5/Mar/08
You guys gotta remember that his ancestors have been living in India for 2000 years. because of this he is living in a subcontinent in which the average height is 5'6 for males and 5'4 for females. Parsi the Iranian stock that came to India were ranged from 5'10 to 6'0. Freddie mercury's ancestors decreased in height when they came to India due to climate , poor protein uptake and interracial marrying( marrying a short Indian women). Freddie mercury was realistically 5'7 without shoes. And 5'8.5 in shoe hence nearly 5'9. THus Freddie mercury height in shoes would be close to 5'9. Anything more then 5'9 is scientifically impossible due his roots from India.

John's standing next to Roger Taylor when they recreate the "Bohemian Rhapsody" pose, and he definitely looks an inch taller than Roger. If Roger is 5'10" or 5'10.5", then that would make John 5'11" or 5'11.5"

Freddie Mercury was 5'7 1/2 and 5'8 1/2 in shoes.

Have never come across Pluto as a middle name.....also, Freddie had great legs, not curved....

Freddie mercury height was 5'7 1/2. In shoes he would like he was 5'9.

Sounds right. Freddie was long legged very rarely wore platforms on stage (only in the early 70s). Thereafter, he always wore 1in Addidas trainers or the like. Roger is 1in taller and John Deacon is about the same as Freddie

I very much doubt that he's shorter than Roger.

Growing up he always seemed like he was over 6 ft. Can't believe that he's just 5'9, I mean c'mon, the guy's a GIANT!

He always seemed like he was about 6'3 until you actually took a close look. A dead on 5'9, with a pesonality like no other.

5'9" is probably right for Freddie, but someone told me he did come across a big guy....

Bumped into Bowie a couple nights ago again.tallest Ive seen him. 5-10.usually,he looks 5-9.

Freddie was a solid 5'9". I think when he stood next to 5'10" David Bowie, his height had to be 5'9". RIP Freddie

both are on sport footwear and if that pic below with Lambert is valid, then Lambert would be 5'11 to 6'0 and Freddy a strong 5.9.

Freddy mercury had curved legs and bad spine, maybe scogliosis?
his body was curved, his legs are curved, always been...

5.9 would be correct IMHO.

Lambert 5'10", Freddie no mor than 5'8"...but who cares? the music is 7 feet tall!!!
Cham said on 4/Oct/06
I think the 175cm seems valid, but somehow he looks kinda short compared to Christopher Lambert(179cm) in the picture

Roger Taylor of Duran Duran is closer to 5'7".

No way is Roger Taylor 6'1". He's officially listed as 5'10".

I read an interview with his bodyguard of many years. He said the same thing as you, big personality and very charimsatic. Every time he'd walk into a room, everyone would took notice, though he was only 176cm.

Looks pretty much the same height as Christopher Lambert on "Princes Of The Universe" music video clip...might have been also a 5'9 1/2 guy, who knows?

Looked an inch shorter than David Bowie who's 5'10". He's a solid 5'9".

He was looking dangerously skinny in the 70's with the long hair then very muscular in the 80's with the mustache. Those type of bodies made him look taller.

I'd say he's between 5'8/5'9 very comfortably. His build sometimes made him look bigger in my opinion.
