Yeah… from the photo, he’s not over 5’9” flat.

Perhaps there should be a ‘Peak/Current’ split listing for him.

Wow, only 5'9?
Crazy, he looks so tall in Visiting Hours.
MaskDeMasque 5'9.5 said on 1/Dec/22
He was clearly taller than van dien 5'9.25 in starship troopers. I can buy 5'9.75 peak.

What a spine-chilling performance he gave in Scanners! The end scene was way ahead of its time. Michael has the voice of someone much taller, but he is stocky and powerfully built, so no wisp of a man.

He gets 5ft9.5, but he must have lost a bit by now.
ChristianPerkins said on 16/Mar/22
5'9.25" with Rob.
miko said on 12/Mar/22
Have you considered a peak and a current for Ironside Rob? He is still pretty active acting wise.
Editor Rob
half inch loss is probable
Andrea said on 9/Mar/22
Do you think the 5'10.75 you mentioned down below could come from him, Rob? Of course that's ruled out, but maybe there's a chance that was a shoe/"1 inch rule" claim, hence 5'9.75 peak?
To be honest, he doesn't look over 176 in the pic, but I remember he still seemed to have a slight edge over Odenkirk in the more recent Nobody.
Editor Rob
Yeah I was thinking about Michael the other day and the 9.75 might be closer for a peak...

I remember speaking to him when getting his autograph and he still cleared 5ft 9 I thought back then, but had probably lost a fraction.

Looks a bit taller than rob here

Rob saw 5ft 9.5 in 2009, he is now 70 so some noticeable height loss is expected. I'd be inclined to say 5ft 9.75 at peak, hard to say how much he has lost today though given his knee replacements.
Editor Rob
it's probably fair to give him a fraction more and today he might be closer to 175-6 range at 70.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 2/Jan/21
Seems over 5ft9 in the photo...wouldn't rule out 5ft10 peak

Rob are you sure he wasn't at least 5'10" flat at his peak ? I wonder what height he claimed during his prime.
Editor Rob
5ft 10 is possible for him yeah.
Jkiller said on 6/May/20

was he never taller than this at peak? for some reason i thought he was bigger, like 180 cm

I watched the next karate kid (1994) and i was suprised that he was 'only' 5'10 . He looked taller

@miko and Matthew: Yeah, you can certainly get well into your 60's without losing much.

And Ironside was only 59 in this photo since it was taken in 2009, though I think it's possible he was 5'10" in his prime as Danimal says. At least he looked taller to me in his 80's and early 90's films even accounting for the cowboy boots he wore in Visiting Hours(1982).

He's certainly a guy who can appear big and intimidating on camera who's surprisingly only of average height. In so many of his early movies, he's so intense and characters so unpleasant that it's almost hard to watch him but he seems a pretty down-to-earth guy off screen.
Matta said on 24/Feb/18
He look like 5foot11 in Total Recall with Arnold Scwarzanegger. I thought he was taller Than 5foot9.
Danimal said on 7/Nov/17
The man was easily 5'10" in his younger days. He's almost 70 now.
Bobby said on 18/Oct/17
He doesn't look 1.5 inches taller.

Agreed Matthew, my grandfather is 78 years old, he was measured in the Army/medical records at 5'6.5 and is still 5'6.5 today. Good posture, good health, absolutely no height loss.

My other grandfather who recently passed away was measured in his prime at 6'2.5, and was still around 6'1 at 86 years old after 2 knee replacements and much poorer health.

He's 67 years old. He's lost at least 1" since his prime.

That's not a given. Believe it or not, I remember when we measured my father when he was around 64 or 65 years old, he measured pretty much exactly the same as he did in his prime. If he'd lost any height, it was couldn't have been more than 1/8 of an inch at most and like I say he was in his mid 60s.

Woody Harrelson.... also quintessential medium-height.
Adamz said on 3/Sep/16
Kevin Spacey medium too.
Adamz said on 3/Sep/16
177cm guys always look quintessential medium-height. He looks it in his movies too, as do Jack Nicholson, Adam Sandler, Norman Reedus, and etc.

He's about the same posture than Jenny, i think his eyes are about 1 inch higher than Jenny's eyes.He has a stronger forehead compared to Jenny imo.I see Michael around 5"9.5' too.
NBAer said on 24/Mar/16
Looks 176cm next to Rob,although judging by his voice-over of Sam Fisher in the Splinter Cell franchise,i would have thought the guy was easily 182cm+,his deep voice always fooled me.
miko said on 12/May/15
I'd say he was likely 5'9.75/5'10 prime and is more 5'9 today.
Judd said on 25/Jan/15
Rob is possible 5'9-9.25" today? Is what he does look with you!
Editor Rob
he is around 176 range I think today.

I am surprised by this listing, I always thought Ironside was 5'11", maybe 6 foot. He looked tall in some of the movies, like Total Recall and Highlander 2. He finally got to play a hero as the voice of Sam Fisher, it was kind of sad he spent most of his careers portraying bad guys.
Sam said on 12/Dec/14
5'9.5" peak, 5'9" today you think Rob? If so, perhaps put up the peak and current heights.
Andrew M said on 4/Oct/14
I always thought he'd be less than this, certainly next to Marc Singer in "V".
But even in "The Next Karate Kid", I don't remember him seeming much bigger than Mr. Myagi (Pat Noriyuki).

He's an excellent example of someone who as Obama is fond of saying "Punches above his weight". Or in this case height. He packs a lot of menace in that little frame.

Lol, since when has 5ft9 been little? Its average.

my good ole sam fisher :) splinter cell will never be the same without him
read somewhere that sam's height was taken off Michael who voices him, sam is 5'10 or 178cm. i'd say mike is 5'10.

Gave a pretty tall impression in Visiting Hours from 1982, but I'll have to check the cast and see how tall they were supposed to be, and Ironside was wearing cowboy boots, but there's no way I buy him at less than 5'10" peak. However, what was more noticeable in that movie was Shatner's awful toupee.
Sam said on 21/Mar/14
He's another guy who seems taller and more imposing on screen due to the nature of his characters and, for my part, confusing him in the 80s and early 90s with fellow gruff, balding and usually villainous Kurtwood Smith. Christian Bale seems to have at least 2 inches of height over Ironside.
miko said on 4/Oct/13
Also I've just watched an interview with Ironside where he states he's had both knee's replaced, another possible cause of height loss.
Editor Rob
quite possibly reason he lost a bit of height
miko said on 4/Oct/13

Great actor with an amazing voice!

I really think that he was at least 180cm when younger, but do you people noticed how awkward is his walking?

I think he had some sort of problem that made him shrunk.
Daii said on 21/Apr/09
In Top Gun I would have guessed he was 5'10 because he looks it, but 5'9 is definitely the least he is. A solid 176 cms
Mark said on 9/Sep/07
In "V" it seems he is wearing cowboy boots and looks about 3-4" shorter then 6'2" Marc Singer. 5'10" is very plausible.
Franco said on 7/Apr/07
honestly he looks 5'11 with shoes, so 5'10 barefoot is not out of the question.

id say 5'9.5 to 5'10 max
ForensicNYC said on 4/Aug/06
Here is Michael Ironside with the cast of "V" series. They seem to be wearing normal shoes and sneakers, so height estimates may be derived from this photo. Marc Singer is about 6'1" to 6'2", Faye Grant is about 5'2" barefoot...
