Rob, theres a movie that he's in from 1978 called The Wild Geese. He's in there with Richard Burton and Roger Moore. Throughout it he looks about even with Moore. It's a great movie aswell. Sort of like a British Expendables. You should watch it.
Editor Rob
I have the recent blu ray release in my collection, amongst many unwatched.

Looked about the same as 186-187cm Roger Moore in Wild Geese

Harris was noticeably shorter than Gary Cooper in The Wreck of the Mary Deare. He appeared several inches shorter. Watch the film and then tell me I'm wrong.

So either Harris was no more than five eleven or Coop was well over six foot three.

Closer to 6ft2 than 6ft.

"Richard Harris height: 6ft 1.5in (187cm)"

He stacked up well against taller guys like Connery, Hackman and O'Toole.
He was a big bloke though...not just heightwise. Definitely not the type of guy to pick a fight with

Charlton Heston at 6'3 towers over Richard Harris in Major Dundee and The Wreck Of Mary Dear. 6'1 for peak Harris is probably the truth.

My father's family are also from Limerick and have had dealings with the Harris clan over the years. My Cousin in London coincidentally performed with Jared Harris onstage years ago.

Am I a fan? Well, he was a brilliant actor but at the same time a wasted talent. He had his demons and I'm sure he even admitted that it ruined his career despite the fact that he'd make fun of his hellraising antics consistently on talk shows. He gained credibility again in the last ten years of his life by which it was probably too late. Whenever I see Unforgiven, The Field or Patriot Games I feel a bit pitiful
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 18/Dec/12
It's common for 6ft1 range guys to claim 6ft2. Maybe 186-187cm range, Rob?
Editor Rob
I need to see him in his 30's as by 50's or 60's he does seem a guy who may have lost height.

Rob, at 1:26 Harris describes himself as being 6ft2. You could add that quote at the top of the page

A bit of variation with this guy. Some people say he was 5'11'' others 6'2'' including the guy who met him in the 90s. I always though he was tall over 6ft anyway. I remember watching him on a chat show with Michael Parkinson in the lates 80s/early 90s I guess and I remember he did look tall about 6'2''. Then again Harris himself has claimed that he just about scraped 6ft. Apparently when he first went to Hollywood the film producers were disappointed to see that he had reddish blond hair and wasn't that imposing physically. From watching This Sporting Life where Harris had his hair dyed and was deliberately cast with small actors, the Hollywood guys expected a 6'4'' Rock Hudson type hunk.
Copnovelist195 said on 9/Nov/12
I once met him in a bar off the Strand. He used to stay at the Savoy Hotel when in London and he would talk to anyone who would listen about rugby. This was in the mid 90s. I was surprised how tall he was. Most actors look way taller on screen than they do off it and he never looked that big on screen, but I would have to say he was a good 6ft2. Similar in build to me - large framed, but spare and rangey. His son was 6ft4.

Next to Conan O'Brien, but, obviously
he was never that tall...but it proves he

at least 185cm/6ft1 and possibly nearer 6ft2...

jake, 1.82 m said on 1/Oct/11
Sterling you missed my point completely, I did not in any way insinuate that 5' 10" is a 'bad height' at all. I am just surprised as to why he claimed 5ft10 when he was clearly, clearly taller than that by a few inches.
Josh B said on 26/Sep/11

Here with Peter O'Toole, they look pretty close in height.
Sterling said on 24/Sep/11
Jake asked why Harris would say he was 5' 10". Maybe because it was the truth. He seemed not at all ashamed of his height when I heard him state it. He had just finished talking about being a former drunk, and of his divorce(s), and how he wouldn't change anything. I was impressed with his honesty, and never forgot it. Anyhow, what's wrong with being 5' 10"? Height doesn't make you a great actor.
Mel John said on 22/Sep/11
I remember him on the Parkinson chat show years ago saying that he was just over 6ft and they used camera angles to make him look taller for 'A sporting Life' where he played a rugby player - he was not asked about his height, he was just chatting about the illusion of cinema, so no reason for him to be coy. I remember it because I thought at the time how down to earth he was being. A great actor.
jake said on 28/Aug/11
Why on Earth would he claim 5ft10?
Sterling said on 28/Aug/11
I saw him on a TV talk show say he was 5' 10". He said people always assumed he was tall because of the rolls he played, but that he was only of average height.
jake said on 21/Aug/11
6ft0.75 at his peak and down 6ft circa his death in 2002.
Lenad said on 11/Aug/11
184cm prime. 181cm at the time of his death
Misha said on 4/Aug/11
The Brits don't usually exaggerate their heights but 6'2" for Richard Harris always struck me as too generous. Based on seeing him in countless films I would tend to agree with Adam2 with a slight upward push - strong six feet edging toward 6'1" in his prime with about an even six feet in old age.
The claims of 6'2" and 6'3" are preposterous.
jake said on 24/Jul/11
Rampage, 6ft4 is handy for back rowers in rugby as they are usually the ones who jump for the ball in line-outs and are most involved in rucking and mauling.
adam2 said on 12/Jun/11
About six feet prime. Looked shorter than Gene Hackman, even though Harris was wearing lifts. In The Wild Geese Harris wore lifts to match up with Roger Moore.

In many old articles listed as 6-3 which is unbelievable. Was about 3-4 inches shorter than 6-3 Gary Cooper.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 7/Jun/11
Yeah 6ft4 is out there alright...I also read somewhere that he played rugby at second row and the ideal height for that position is 6ft4 onwards

Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/May/11
186-187cm out of bed Rob?
Coolerking said on 3/May/11
Roger Moore said that during The Wild Geese he noticed Harris getting taller than him and called him out for wearing lifts. In the promotion of Camelot, a press release noted Harris, Franco, and Redgrave were all 6 ft. Also, he never seemed taller than his second wife, Ann Turkel, who was also 6 ft. He made a movie back before he was thirty with Robert Mitchum, A Terrible Beauty. It doesn't seem available anywhere but would be interesting seeing how he measures up to Mitchum. So I figure he was a weak 6'1" at best.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 23/Apr/11

Lenad said on 16/Jan/11

m said on 7/Jan/11
I agree with James, 187 peak sounds spot on. Take a good look at the Peckinpah film 'Major Dundee', the Antonnini film 'Red Desert', and the Anderson film 'This Sporting Life' and compare him with the established heighs of some of his co-stars like Heston. I think he definitely lost a bit of height by the time he was in his 60s so unless he using some kind of lifts for his whole career which is doubtful because he clearly didn't need them I'd say a peak of 187.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 5/Dec/10
Still looked about 6"1 in Harry Potter movies...
James said on 11/Nov/10
I think a peak of 6'1.5 (187cm) is possible. In 1992 next to 6'0 Harrison Ford he looked a full 6'1 and he was 62 in that movie.

tubbs said on 15/May/09
On the commentary for the Wild Geese DVD Roger Moore tells an interesting story about how he caught Harris wearing lifts to make himself taller than Roger.....as punishment for messing up the scene they were doing Rog and Burton made him film the rest of the scene barefoot. I think he was 6'1" for sure, i've just seen Molly Maguires and he's not far off Sean's height, no lifts were involved by the looks of things either.
JOSH said on 15/May/09
The other night i watched the wild geese and harris looked the same height or slightly taller than roger moore who was probarbly a solid 6ft 1 or so. And in the film the molly maguires sean connery looked an inch taller at the most. So i would give a certain 6ft 1 inches in height for richard harris.
Lenad said on 29/Apr/09
He did look like he could potentially be over 6foot

6ft3 and 6ft4 are very extreme for Harris. 6ft2 doesn't seem too extreme. He appeared close to that mark at times. I'd say 6ft1 and some change in his prime. I great actor. He's missed everyday.
Hugh said on 6/Feb/09

I'm sure Hugh would probably say I'm 6'0 if he met me.
Hugh said on 25/Jan/09
They must've done something with the camera angles in that movie to make Cooper look more imposing then he already was. Harris looked taller than 6ft1 Alan Rickman in the Harry Potter movies. He looked about 1-1.5 inches taller than Harrison Ford in Patriot Games.
adam said on 25/Jan/09
Hugh, how do you explain that Harris was four inches shorter than Gary Cooper who was 6-3? That was back then when Harris was in his prime. Cooper could have been slightly over 6-3 but nowhere near 6-5!
Hugh said on 20/Jan/09
Well, Harris might have lost a little height at that time. I still think when Harris was young he was a strong 6ft1. But he looked marginally taller than 6ft1 listed Alan Rickman in the first two Harry Potter movies. He did look near to Hackman's height in Unforgiven.
Hugh said on 19/Jan/09
He was about 1 inch taller than Ford.
Hugh said on 18/Jan/09
I'm sticking to 6ft1. He was at least the same height as Alan Rickman in the Harry Potter Movies if not a little taller.
Lenad said on 17/Jan/09
A 6ft4 Richard Harris would equal a 6ft8 Gary Cooper.
Hugh said on 3/Jan/09
He was 6ft1 up to his death. Moore was probably closer to 6ft2 in his prime.
adam said on 1/Jan/09
Frank2 says on 17/Mar/06
Nope. No way was Richard Harris 6'1". Not a chance in hell was he 6'1". I'm watching The Wreck of the Mary Deare and in scenes with 6'3" Gary Cooper, Harris is a good four inches shorter.

Well if this is true and Harris was clearly shorter than Moore... then 6-1 is BS! Perharps he really was around 5-11
GUK said on 27/Dec/08
I'm starting to think he was 5ft 11/6ft, because in Wild Geese he's not much taller than Richard Burton in full length body shots, and certainly shorter than Roger Moore.

There was a film with him in with sean connery and connery looked about an inch or so on him and i think connerys true height was stated before his acting days as 6ft 2.4 so that could make harris 6ft 1.

Lenad said on 23/Oct/08
No Hugh 5ft11/6ft man claiming 6ft3 as height is very laughable.
Hugh said on 20/Oct/08
Lenad you are entitled too your opinions so if you see Harris ass 6ft tops in his prime so be it. But I stand by my claim of him being 6ft1 to 6ft1.5 in his prime and 6ft or just over 6ft by the time of his death.
Hugh said on 20/Oct/08
Okay, Lenad but a 5ft11/6ft man claiming 6ft3 as his height is beyond laughable.
Lenad said on 18/Oct/08
Hugh, 186/187cm could not have been his peak height. He was probably around 6'1 in shoes but 6'1.5 flat is too much. For Harris, 182/183cm i can buy for peak so he was definitly a bit above average but Glenn has witnessed 5'11 for Harris. Harris was 5 ft 11.5-6 ft 0 at peak. Thats my opinion and I aint backing off from it!
Hugh said on 12/Oct/08
That sounds fair Ed, but I just can't see a 5ft11.5 man claim 6ft3 as his height. It sounds ridiculous! I don't know where or when he claimed to be that tall. Actually he might've been 6ft flat by the time of his death and say 6ft1.25 at his peak. But he did look the tallest of the Harry Potter cast. He looked slightly taller than Alan Rickman who is listed here as 6ft1. Aswell, I think Harris was quite far from skinny. I did look to have a similiar build to Sean Connery. You know, broad shouldered, well-built guy with good posture and a solid walk. That sortive made him a little imposing at times on screen.
Ed(1) said on 11/Oct/08
Hugh, don't worry man, we just have differences of opinion! That's what this site is for, debating and discussing height.

As for Harris, I'm just going off of both Glenn and Frank2's estimates, as well as what I've seen from his films. His thin physique only added to his height, so it's natural for him to look taller. But I'd bet his footwear also added to this illusion as he got older.

My guess is 6ft0.5 peak, and 5ft11.5 in his later years. It's not entirely impossible he was 6ft1 peak, and 6ft at the time of his death either. Either way, you throw on some cowboy boots or other heeled boots, and a 5ft11.5-6ft man is now 6ft1-6ft1.5. Or in his youth 6ft2-6ft2.5! Add this together with a thin physique, and you can see why claims of 6ft3 and taller could have happened!
Hugh said on 10/Oct/08
Ed, I do not want to make another enemy. I've already made enemies with Viper and Lenad. If you think Harris stood no taller than 6ft0.5 at his peak, you are entitled to your opinions but I still stand by my claim that Harris was 6ft1 flat by the time of his death and was 6ft1.25-6ft1.5 in his prime.
Hugh said on 10/Oct/08
Sorry Ed, Harris could very well have been close to 6ft2 when he was younger. He was very close in height to Connery. In the Harry Potter Movies he looked the same height as Alan Rickman who I beleive stands 6ft1. 186-187cm was his peak height I think.
Ed(1) said on 8/Oct/08
Hugh, both Glenn and Frank2 saw Harris in the 5ft11+ range later in his life! Harris might have been 6ft0.5 once when he was young man, but in his old age he shrunk! 6ft1.5 is way too high!

As for Connery, I don't think he was over 6ft1.5 at his peak, and these days he's probably around 6ft-6ft0.25 if he stood up straight!

Lastly, I don't buy Ford as a legit 6ft1 in 1992 at 50 years of age! He already by that point had done the first 3 Indy films, Blade Runner, and the Star Wars films, and had severly messed up his back, knees, and overall body doing stuntwork. I'm sure he suffered some height loss by this time.
Hugh said on 8/Oct/08
Connery was 6ft2.5 at his peak. 5ft11.5 is ridiculous for Harris even by the time of his death. I can buy 6ft1.5 as his peak. Aswell he was taller than Harrison Ford in Patriot Games. Ford at that time was 6ft1. In the Harry Potter films he towered over everyone. He was still 6ft1. A 5ft11.5 man claiming 6ft3 is stupid.
Ed(1) said on 7/Oct/08
Hugh, I don't know if I'd go so far as 6ft2 for Harris! I'd say 6ft0.5-6ft1 tops peak, and 5ft11.5 by the time of his death. If Connery was 6ft1.5 peak, this would make sense for Harris looking close to him in size.
Hugh said on 6/Oct/08
Harris was near in height to Connery so might have been 6ft2 or close in his prime. 6ft1 flat by the time of his death.
Mister Lennon said on 3/Oct/08
Harris was about 6'1 or close. He was a little shorter than his all time buddie Peter 0`toole , who was 6'2 or close at peak.
Ed(1) said on 3/Oct/08
Harris did look taller then Harrison Ford in Patriot Games(1992), so 6ft1 could be accurate since I peg Ford at near 6ft in the early 90's, and around 5ft11.25-5ft11.5 now. I wouldn't rule out some sort of a lift though for Harris from time to time, or at least bigger heeled boots. If I remember correctly he wore cowboy boots in Patriot Games, and was super skinny as well adding to the effect of him being a lot taller.

The only scenario that makes sense if Harris was only 5ft11.5, is that Ford was the same height in Patriot Games, but wore normal heeled dress shoes to Harris' 2" heeled cowboy boots. This would account for the height difference!
Lenad said on 2/Oct/08

I remember a Parkinson Show a few years ago when he said he was just under six feet tall and they'd used camera angles to make him look bigger for a film where he played a Rugby player - "This Sporting Life" I think it was called. He seemed to be just honestly talking about the way in which the camera can create a certain impression, so it seems a pretty honest comment.

In different scenes of movies, Richard looks tall and some he looks a bit short. I bet they put lifts in his shoes when he needed to be taller. I know that Charleton Heston and Richard Harris hated eachother while making Major Dundee, so it might have been a power struggle. But in Camelot, he does look smaller. I saw him on stage playing King Arthur but thought he looked about 5'11. Since I am a HUGE fan, I will always think of him as a tall man.

I'm guessing that he was anywhere from 6' to 6'2''. He was of slim build although broad shouldered and this could perhaps make him look taller than he was. I don't buy the stuff about him being 5'11'' though.

Piwo81:
Interesting pictures, Harris is almost taller than Brosnan, so the Irish is not over 6'1".
Taller than Mckellen (who's not over 5'11").
Finally taller than Moore, in the shot with camoufflage clothes Harris is slouching a bit, yet his shoulder line is above Moore's.

This makes sense, Frank has said Niven was 5'11" and Moore an inch taller, has spotted recently Moore at 5'11", so i think he was in the 6'-6'1" range (Glenn said he was 6'1" back on '90s though).
Harris appear to be barely taler than Moore, so 6'1" sounds right to me.

I seriously doubt Mitchie is my height.

I stood right next to Richard around 1980. He was well over 6'0" then. But perhaps that was due to his boots. He toward over his model gf then - Ann Turkel, who has to be 5'10" or so.

When O'Toole did Lawrence I do remember reading where one critic complained that O'Toole was miscast since he was six feet and was playing the role of a man who was about 5'4". Then I started reading his height increasing way up to 6'3". I suspect that O'Toll was never more than 6'1". He was and still is a stick.
Jason said on 28/Apr/06
That's weird Harris struggled with 6'0'' and he was billed as tall as 6'4''. Far out!

Frank, do you think 6'1'' could have been possible for Peter O'Toole? I'd previously gathered he wasn't 6'3'' or even 6'2'', but I would have pegged him at a solid 6'1''.

He wasn't much shorter than Gene Hackman in Unforgiven.
In 1995 Hackman was still 1.5 inch taller than John Travolta.

"My memories of him today....physically he was huge - well past six foot tall and extremely broad shouldered", from sex death and the movies biography.

When he was interviewed for a part in a film with Doris Day the producers were expecting a Rock Hudson 6'4'' guy. This was because they'd seen Harris looking massive with dyed black hair in This Sporting Life. But that film was cast with small people to make Harris look bigger. Harris himself described the producers shock on seeing him fair haired and barely 6 ft. However I've seen him on tv and he could look rather tall on occasion.

I saw Richard way back in pajamas and slippers talking to himself on a NYC street.he looked 5-10,5-11.youron the money with that one Frank!

I was talking with an old friend who used to be an extra and he swears that Harris was his height and my friend is 5'10". I think Harris was about 5'11" to 5'11-1/2". But one thing is for sure and that's he was never 6'1".

Sean was probably 6'2" or close to it when he was younger. By the time he did a film at Fox circa early 2000's he was only about an inch taller than me. And once again I'm 5'11".

Saw WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE too recently on TCM (love that channel). I saw at least 3" difference between Harris and both Cooper and Heston. Cooper and Heston were built VERY differently, but looked the same height within 1 cm at most. Harris was a good 2" less than Sean Connery in THE MOLLY MCGUIRES and in ROBIN AND MARION.
Frank2 said on 17/Mar/06
Nope. No way was Richard Harris 6'1". Not a chance in hell was he 6'1". I'm watching The Wreck of the Mary Deare and in scenes with 6'3" Gary Cooper, Harris is a good four inches shorter. Both men are wearing what appear to be normal shoes. And the disparity is consistent. It's the same in close up's as well as in the long shots. Unless Coop was actually 6'5" I'd say Harris was no more than 5'11". And as far as O'tool, he's about 6', not the 6'2" we read about. He's just so thin that he looks taller.

I met Peter O'Toole in about 1988.I am 6 feet tall and he did not impress me as being a taller man. If anything I thought of him as smaller.
Mikex said on 27/Dec/05
I think it can be difficult to compare the heights of actors in a movie to say who is taller unless there is a big difference like 3 or 4 inches or so. I think it depends on how the actors stand and the camera angle etc. Also I guess that directors sometimes try to make the leading man look big in comparison to the rest of the cast. On the subject of Harris, I don't know if he was ever 6'3'' but I reckon he was 6'2'' in his prime.

Peter O'Toole's official height as a young man was 6'3". I don't think Harris was ever 6'3" or close to it and was roughly 6'1" as a young man (in Major Dundee, Charlton Heston, 6'3", had a couple of inches on him).
Mario Nariano said on 16/Nov/05
Nah he looked even in his 70s 6 ft 1.
And yes he was an inch shorter than Peter Otoole who was 6 ft 2 at his peak, not shorter or taller. I think that Harris was a lucky guy who dind't lose height.
John said on 10/Nov/05
O'Toole was never 6'3 but 6'1 or 2 at most. Watching "The Wild Geese" on DVD, I can't believe Harris was ever more than 6 feet even.
McFan said on 18/Aug/05
I agree that Richard Harris was never 6'3. Peter O'Toole was 6'3 and he was always an inch taller than Harris.
James said on 17/Jul/05
I don't think Harris was ever 6'3. In "Camelot", made when he was 36, he looks an inch shorter than Franco Nero, who was 6'2. So I think it's possible Harris, who was a very physically fit man despite his excessive drinking, never lost any height during his lifetime.
