How tall was Richard Harris

Richard Harris Height

6ft ½ in (184.2 cm)

Irish Actor best known for roles in movies like Unforgiven, The Wild Geese, The Guns of Navarone, This Sporting Life, Red Desert, A Man Called Horse, The Field, Gladiator and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. At an AFI lifetime achievement award for Kirk Douglas, Richard described himself as 6ft 2 in height, although he has claimed to be even taller, in a 1968 interview stating "I'm still 6 feet 3 inches when I leave the room".

I read a synopsis...of my life and these things the studios hand out. And they say I'm Six Foot Three. Which is THREE inches more than I am.
What I hate about our business today is the elitism the so-called stars have imposed on the public, which I think is obnoxious. It's a joke. Who cares about Madonna going to the opening tonight? Now you have guys like Tom Cruise, who's a midget, and has eight bodyguards, all six feet tall, which makes him even more diminutive. He disappears behind them. It's an absolute joke.

Rory, there's a compelling argument for Cooper being a bit over 6ft3 but he did look a comfortable 2in or more taller than Harris.

Click Here This is probably the most accurate representation of the difference. It could vary quite a bit in the movie due to bad posture on both men's parts and angles.

I still think Harris could've been 6ft0¾ opposite Cooper's 6ft3¼
Rory said on 3/Sep/23
With Gary Cooper in the wreck of Mary Deare he definitely didn't look over 6ft0.5. Cooper had him by 2-3 inches easily. I think 184 suits him nicely actually. At that height with a chunky shoe/boot and good posture you'll look at least 6ft1 on occasions, but I think barefoot 184 is fair.
Daycringeothon said on 27/Aug/23
One former poster claims Harris was “short” in Mutiny on the Bounty alongside Marlon Brando. We can only speculate a few possible factors: the angles used in the movie were mostly in favour of the leading actor Brando. Was Brando himself in lifts for parts of the movie.
The ground level giving an unfair advantage for Brando. Also only “waist up”shots of Harris make it really useless to gauge his actual height. Brando was probably closer to 5’9” than a flat 5’8” in his prime.

Some witness account's meeting Harris gave him as low as 5’10” range in his earlier work. So he has been given 5’11” estimates more than one occasion. He has been estimated 6 foot flat many times and around 6’1” . The 6’4” guy’s comment once seeing Harris in the flesh being about his height or around 6’2” is interesting.

Harris’s height based on his early roles hints to a conceivable height of 6 foot and change.

I've just watched a documentary 'The Ghost of Richard Harris' covering his life. There are a few comments about him being a big guy in this program. One lady who worked with Harris as a young guy said she didn't think he would make it as an actor in part because he was too physically imposing. He wouldn't have been wearing lifts as this stage as a novice theatre actor in Ireland I'd imagine

Most actors I guess aren't that tall it appears. So overall its seems he was probably above average in size. Which just makes the comments on here about him looking 5'10'' in person seem more puzzling. They don't seem made up they appear genuine, so Harris is a quite tricky one to call
Leone_Fan said on 18/May/23
Rampage I think Harris was probably about 6ft in line with the height given on here. What I find interesting and puzzling is the differences in perception from people who claimed to have encountered him. An ex wife who described him as physically huge and over 6ft, a quote mentioned below. Surely his wife should know how tall he was.

Then you get the comments from the guy who met Harris on a airplane and told him 'he looked like a miniature Richard Harris' unaware he was talking to the real Richard Harris. The person could be making up the meeting but it seems a strange story to invent. Two different posters claimed to have met him in the Coal House pub in London. One describes him as 6'2'' the other says he was definitely under 6ft. Older posts from people who encountered Harris mention he was not that tall in person roughly average height. Then you have the fact that as a young guy Harris played rugby at lock and in the back row and these positions are usually reserved for larger than average men. Although rugby players were a lot smaller years ago.

Under 6ft is a joke for Harris. I agree with Arch...at least an almost 6ft1 guy. Throw on some shoes and he's 6ft2 range
Leone_Fan said on 13/May/23
The movies are a world of make believe. People travel through time or jump off buildings hundreds of feet in the air and survive and so on. The idea that an actor who is stated to be 6'2'' might actually be under 6ft is not really hard to believe.
Jtm said on 13/May/23
G saw him at 5'10-5'11. he always got a reputation for being such a big upgrade but sometimes it was the other way around like cate blanchett, warren beatty, denzel washington, tobey maguire, kate moss etc.

Leone_Fan said on 11/May/23
Having read a bit further in the Harris biography, the author mentions Harris adult height as 6'2''. The writer Joe Jackson knew Harris well. So maybe Harris was that tall.

What I'm slightly puzzled by is there is an old comment from a 6'4'' guy who saw Harris and one of his sons in a London pub. He describes Harris as tall saying he was nearly as tall as himself say 6'2''. He also describes Harris' son as being 6'4''. Yet looking at pictures of his sons none of them look particularly tall. Its hard to know if posters are genuine when they claim to have met celebrities.
Leone_Fan said on 10/May/23
I'm reading a biography of Richard Harris that was was published recently. It seems that when Richard told stories about himself truth and fiction were often blurred.

Sometimes he is self deprecating talking about his height saying he was barely 6ft and the Hollywood bios about him being much taller were bull, other times he claims to be 6'2'' or even 6'4'' such as in the story told by his son when he was after the part in Camelot.

In that film with Gary Cooper at the start of his career Harris looks much shorter than 6'3'' Cooper struggling to reach 6ft. Later on his career Harris usually appears quite tall standing about even with 6'2'' Gene Hackman in Unforgiven when he was 60 or so. Roger Moore claimed Harris wore lifts on The Wild Geese in some scenes. People who have met Harris person sometimes describe him as roughly average height or just over say 5'11''. Other times he is described as being physically imposing a big man, taller than he looks on screen. These accounts seems equally convincing.

If I had to guess I'd say roughly 6ft although he might have been an inch under or an inch over.

I really believe 6ft0¾-1 range (out of bed at least 6ft1½) was more likely for Harris than 6ft0½. Throw on some shoes and he was clearing 6ft2.

Still looked comfortably over 6ft in the last years of his life which makes me inclined to believe he was more likely than not the full 6ft1

Jake, that or the full 6ft1.

I heard him say on an afternoon TV talk show (Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin) that people thought he was a big hulking fellow, but he really was only five feet ten. Many of those shows have been saved, and the comment might be available online. I think this was after Harris sobered up and was contrite, so he might have wanted to belittle himself.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/Apr/22

Even the original 6ft1 listing could still work. While the 6ft3 could be a misquote, he's on record claiming 6ft2 twice
Sinclair said on 10/Mar/22
Admittedly, 6'1" is a bit of a stretch for Harris at times, such as when he's facing 6'2" max Sean Connery in The Molly Maguires. Connery has approximately 1.5 inches on Harris in that film. Thus, 6'0.5" is a great shout for Harris and maybe the reason why David Letterman looked Harris' height in their interview was because Letterman was only ever 6'0.5"?
viper said on 28/Jan/22
You would think he would have to be 6-1 at the minimum to be claiming 6-3.

Usually the case for an actor.

It's crazy how he's all over the place with his claims

@Hong

I recently linked a photo on this page of Harris standing with Connery circa 1970. I think it fairly depicted Harris at a more true 6’ 1/2” or even 6’ flat. Connery’s posture is a bit less than Harris’ in your photo but I would agree that Harris appears as a good 6’1”, further corroborated by his advantage over 6’ listed George Peppard. I haven’t personally deduced it but I see several contributors believe Harris took to lifts later in life. Certainly Harris appears to be standing better alongside Connery than he did some decades prior.

A photo of Harris and Connery from THE MOLLY MAGUIRES 1970. Click Here As I recall the movie, I think this still sums up the height pull generally upheld throughout the movie and is in agreement with the listing here.

In his own right, due to his build, Harris could pull off claiming an inch or so taller. Years back, I would've bought 6'1 1/2" without careful scrutiny.
Hong said on 6/Jul/21
@Rob,I wasn't aware of Ann Turkel's comments,if he did resort to wearing lifts at any stage he could have been a regular lift wearer. He always looked in the 6ft1 to 2 range to me but did look no more than 6ft next to Gary Cooper, but that was earlier in his career when he was an unknown. So considering all this 6ft.5 is probably more accurate.
Hong said on 5/Jul/21
@Rob,good upgrade, but I would still go with 6ft1,he looked similar to 6ft1.5 Letterman and 8s also 17 years older and was 65 at the time.
Editor Rob
remember there is truth in the fact Harris had at one time been wearing thicker than normal heels.

From Ann Turkel's page on here:

"So, in order to keep ahead, Harris now wears boots with three-inch lifts, bought in Paris. 'Otherwise I feel like Mickey Rooney next to her', he says."
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 18/Jun/21
6ft0½ would be the bare minimum for me...I've said it before and I'll say it again, a lot of guys say 'six feet' but don't literally mean 6ft...it's a description that can cover 2-3in over that mark. Costner, Jim Broadbent and Idris Elba (6ft1, 6ft2 and 6ft2½ respectively) have said it

Rory said on 10/Jun/21
I think for Harris to have been a flat six foot then he would have to have been a lift wearer because too often he appeared 6ft1+. I think more likely he was say 6ft0.75, at that sort of height on occasion he might push it to 6ft2 and then on more modest days rounding down to six foot.

Six foot flat is unlikely unless he was a chronic lift wearer which there is no firm evidence of to my knowledge.

Maybe its different though at an elite tailors who are fitting for film stars

Watched the Molly Maguires last night, good cast OK film. In one scene Harris looked similar in height to Sean Connery although less robust in physique. In another Connery looked about 3 inches taller putting Harris back to the 5'11'' or so he looked next to Gary Cooper in The Wreck of the Mary Deare. Could just be angles or the slope of the ground.

I think there is a possibility though that Harris frequently wore the fabled 'Hollywood lifts in the shoes'. The reports of his height from those who encountered him in real life are all over the place. Some say well over 6ft some say 5'11''. Maybe he looked taller on some occasions because he was wearing lifts during these encounters.

It has to be said though that Sean Connery was a pretty big guy in his youth. Tall and well built a genuine 6'2'' or thereabouts although not ripped like todays gym bunny's and protein shake drinkers. I think younger people might look at the early Bond films and think Connery wasn't really in great shape but years ago there weren't many people with seriously ripped physiques that you nowadays encounter on a daily basis. In the 50s and 60s guys didn't spend 2 hrs a day in the gym simply to look good. It was probably considered unmanly in those days for men to worry over their appearance to any degree.
movieguy12 said on 30/May/20
Harris was not rake thin as suggested below at least as a younger man. He looked pretty athletic in his 40s in a Man Called Horse. He seemed very broad shouldered for his height. In later years he seemed to becoming noticeably less robust in part no doubt because of the years of hard living.

A story that been told before is that when he went out to Hollywood to star in Caprice, Doris Day was shocked at his appearance expecting to meet a 6'4'' dark haired hunk in the Rock Hudson mould. This was because he looked imposing in This Sporting Life but in that film he was cast with mainly smaller guys to play up the appearance of size and brute force. Although Jack Watson at 6'2'' looked a bit taller. Day was shocked as Harris was in his own words barely 6ft, red haired and balding.

Then again he has also claimed to be 6'2'' and 6'3''. Roger Moore said he was taller than Harris. Sean Connery looked taller. Gary Cooper looked 4 inches taller than a young Harris. However there is a believable story below from a guy who says he met Harris and guessed him as 6'2''.

Richard Harris is another one its hard to pin down. He has given his own height as being both 6ft and 6'2'' and can look either depending on the occasion. Although in the past some on here have claimed to have met him and guessed him as 5'11''. Elsewhere I have seem him described as being a big guy even in older years. Roger Moore said he was taller than Harris on the set of the Wild Geese at least until the day Harris appeared on set wearing lifts in his boots. So Harris probably did use artificial means to boost his height at least sometimes. On the Molly Maguires, Harris did appear to be a little shorter than Sean Connery.

Rob, this is probably the worst estimate I've seen of yours. If you are doubtful of his claims, at least give him 6'1/2 inch, although I'd be fairly confident he was 6'1 peak if not a bit over. Unless you are always starring with Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffma, 6' flat just isn't that tall in Hollywood. It really isn't that tall in real life either. A person bragging about that height in just about any nation in the western world would be thought a fool.
Editor Rob

He did wear lifts at one stage when he was married to Ann Turkel.
Mon said on 14/Sep/19
Too much reliance on what actors have said about their heights of late I am afraid. Of all the heights I am the most confident this is wrong. Harris was more like 6'1'' peak. I am 5'11.75'' and walked past him as he was abling along the Kings Road one day in the 90s and in deck shoes like I was wearing he was perceptibly taller than me (yes I was checking) even though he was a somewhat stooped older man who looked shorter until you got close. So I would put him as a flt six foot by that point, but he had lost something by then I am sure. In The Molly MaGuires he was definitely below Sean Connery, but certainly not two inches. A weak six one (peak).

I once met Richard Harris in person at a regular haunt of his in London, a pub called the Coal Hole, which was in The Strand and next door to the Savoy where he stayed regularly when in London. It surprised me how tall he was, because he never looked too tall on the screen. I'm a good six foot four and he was almost as tall as me - certainly 6'2". One time he had his son with him and he was 6'4", the same as me. There was no sign of them wearing lifts. This would have been when he was in his mid sixties, quite late in life. People on here who say he was six foot or less are talking nonsense.

I once worked as an extra on the set of a movie called Burke & Hare, and the director, John Landis, pointed me out as "the tall guy".

The best way of analysing someone's height is to watch them walk through doorways. I'm just watching the 1974 movie, Juggernaut, and Harris walks through doorways with two or three inches to spare, whilst stooping a little. Most doorways are around six feet six.

Always thought he looked 6'1 or 6'2 from seeing him in some of those 1970s films like Wild Geese and Juggernaut.
My dad met him briefly in a hotel lift in Liverpool in 1998; embarrassingly asking if he was "Lawrence of Arabia?" He politely responded by saying "no, that's the other one" meaning his mate Peter O'Toole.

Anyway, I asked my dad how tall he was, half expecting him to say he was even taller than my original guess. He said he was the same height as himself. He's 5'10.5. He'll have been in his late 60s by then, but surely wouldn't have shrunk 2-3 inches.

Having recently seen some of his early films such as the Wreck of the Mary Deare and This Sporting Life and standing next to known actors such as Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston and Jack Watson; he clearly was never taller than 5ft 11.5.

Someone mentioned below that he auditioned for roles after This Sporting Life in America and they commented how short he was. I think deep down that hurt him and he wore lifts from time to time afterwards. Not trolling here; maybe check out the footage yourself below:

when you look at that clip of his entrance to the David Letterman show, he's right there with Letterman. He always appeared to be about 2 1/2 inches taller than Johnny Carson and an inch below McMahon so 6'2 in his prime seems about right. I do remember Harris saying that in the rugby movie he made "the Sporting Life" he was surrounded with shorter actors to make him appear 6'4, consistent with the role of the rugby enforcer he was playing. He dyed his hair for that role. He said when he showed up in Hollywood, they were surprised to see that he was blonde and only 6'1 or so. He's a confusing one, but 6'1 minimum in his prime.

movieguy said on 18/Aug/17
Harris is a strange one though, looking on youtube he stacks up well against Robbie Coltrane and Sean Connery on the Aspel show. Although he probably exaggerated his height at times he also looks surprisingly tall on other occasions.
James said on 12/Aug/17
I wouldn't be surprised if Harris was 5'11" and rounded up to six foot.
movieguy said on 8/Aug/17
Listening to the clip with his son it was Harris himself who claimed 6'4'' but this looks like it was to grab the part of King Arthur in Camelot alongside very tall Vanessa Redgrave. Harris obviously realized he was exaggerating. Gary Cooper was much taller in Wreck of Mary Deare where Harris looked 5'11''.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Aug/17
He's a lot like Orson Welles who was reported anywhere from 6ft to 6ft5
movieguy said on 5/Aug/17
The strange thing about Harris is that he describes himself as different heights on different occasions. Claims 6ft flat, then 6'2'' then finally claims 6'3''. There is even the 6'4'' claim from his son. I'd go for the lower at 6ft although I can recall some going for as low as 5'11'' for Harris. I do think this guy wore lifts on a number of occasions although I'm usually skeptical about such claims.

I think it's a bit drastic to downgrade him by a full inch based on that one clip. Harris'own estimations of his height were all over the place, 6'-6'4". I agree that in the clip he probably exaggerated down in order to make a point. He could look 6'1"a lot of the time, and if he really was 6' flat surely you would have noticed it before now?
James said on 10/Jul/17
Harrison Ford is 5'11" or less.
Arch Stanton said on 7/Jul/17
Well I did say he could often look 6' range but then could look 6'1.5, I suspect he wore lifts at times. I might have guessed 6'0.5 but 6' flat is certainly lower than I'd have guessed but we can't dispute it coming from the horses mouth.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Jul/17

you could still argue he could have been a bit over it, but really I think it was a self-admission.

listening to that, that sounded like an honest admission to being six foot.
William said on 29/Jun/17
According to Harris he was exactly 6ft. In a Q&A from the 16/11/1971, Harris explains that a leaflet handed out to te audience before one of his films, listed his height as 6ft 3. Harris then remarks that that was 3 inches more than his actual height.

Everyone is way off. the movie Mutiny on the Bounty 1962 he was the same height as Marlon Brando who played Fletcher Christian, he played Seaman Mills. In the movie he was shorter than all the other Seaman's in the movie.Marlon Brando was about 5 ft 8 inches. In the beginning of the movie he was escorted on the ship by 2 female companions who were both taller than him. Even in Heels most women are around 5 ft 7 in heels. Richard Harris has t be 5 ft 8 and because he looked very short in the movies he probably most likely wore shoe lifts. There is no way he was over 5 ft 10 absolutely not.I am 5 ft 10 myself in the afternoon i am 5 ft 9.5 and i am taller than every guy i see in Canada. Richard Harris looked surprisingly short for a guy listed as 6 ft tall. When you try to figure out a persons height it is best to compare them with a person who is average or shorter for example Harris being measured to Marlon Brando. They were both the exact same height through out the entire movie and Marlon Brando was noted as being 5 ft 8 to 5 ft 9 max so that would make Harris around the same height.

Mon said on 19/Apr/14
By my way of thinking several means more than a couple or a few. It could mean four, but I think it more strongly implies five or more.

I walked right beside him, and I am certain Harris (with somewhat stooped 'older man' posture) was still a rock solid 6 foot tall in the early 90's. Probably a little over 6 foot. Considering that he had visibly aged facially and in muscle tone by that time, to the extent he looked about 15 years older than his true age, it is very difficult to believe that he was not at least a weak 6'1'' when he played beside Cooper, who was 6'3'', and not a particularly strong 6'3'' judging by the way he looked as a young man next to Charles Bickford (when Bickford was in his 30's). So Cooper must have had help to LOOK more than 2 inches taller than a peak Harris, because he certainly wasn't.

Hun said on 2/Jan/14
I would say he looked 4 inches shorter than Cooper.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 2/Jan/14
Strong 6ft1/weak 6ft2 peak is fair. He was a hair shorter than Sean Connery in The Molly Maguires, which would support a strong 6ft2 for him peak.
Jim said on 2/Jan/14
Yes. Gary Cooper was 6'3", so Harris can't have been any more than 5'11" without his lifts. However, Cooper himself always claimed he was 6'2", in which case Harris can't have even been 5'11".

Thank you Lenad and Mon. The man looked 6ft1 range even in his later years.
Lenad said on 1/Jan/14
I personally think he was 185-186cm but interesting though, in the wreck of the mary deare he looked at least 3 inches shorter than gary cooper which. Anyone else seen that?
Lenad said on 31/Dec/13
HE could pull off looking 6'2 in movies. 185cm would be the least I can accept for harris
Mon said on 31/Dec/13
Going in the same direction as him, I walked past Richard Harris as he ambled along on the Chelsea Road one summer day during the early 90's. He was wearing low heeled shoes (deck shoes I think) and although bit hunched in the way older men get, you could see he was a tall broad shouldered man diminished by age and hard living. I am slightly under 6ft and I am certain he was slightly over 6 foot tall at that time. A weak 6'2'' in his day is quite likely, especially as he once managed to hold his own in a well publicized pub brawl with some Smithfield meat porters.

Director Lindsay Anderson deliberately filmed Harris in such a way that he would look taller in "This Sporting Life", as well as surrounding him with short actors (Arthur Lowe, Colin Blakely, Leonard Rossiter etc).

Parkinson was 5'10" at his peak (5'9" now). Harris would not have lost height by the age of 42.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Dec/13
I saw that interview. Parkinson is down here at 5ft10/178cm but might've been a bit over that. Harris was 3at least 3in taller. He would have been in his 40s by that stage.
johnhmproctor said on 15/Dec/13
I too remember the Parkinson interview - back in the old days when 'chat shows' really did have in depth coverage, and Richard Harris's was one of the longest Parkinson ever did (it was open-ended as it was the last show on a Saturday night). Anyway, to business: Harris definitely said he was barely six foot and shocked Hollywood with how short he was, having been surrounded deliberately with short actors in his breakthrough film This Sporting Life. I always assessed heights compared with Parkinson, who was about 5'11". Harris looked about the same to me and I thought he was pushing it a bit even for his 'bare 6 foot'. By the way, I always knock at least an inch off published heights. Publicity material will hardly ever go for height without shoes, at least for men.

Rob, here's a scene from Patriot Games with Harris, Ford and Samuel L. Jackson. We'll let you be the judge
David said on 4/Dec/13
If Richard Harris was tall then why did he look shorter than 5'10" Franco Nero in "Camelot"?

And surely if he was two inches taller than Harison Ford then that would make him 6'3"?
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 29/Nov/13
I personally don't believe he wore lifts.
He posture was pretty bad though and maybe that made him look shorter?

It was quite obvious that he was still drinking in the last decade of his life.
Ciaran said on 28/Nov/13
Harris was wearing built up shoes in "Patriot Games". He always wore special shoes in movies and in real life.

Although I do agree with your assessment of his career, there's no doubt Harris largely wasted his talent and by the time he was in demand again in Hollywood it was too late for him to be anything more than a character actor.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/Nov/13
He had 2in on Harrison Ford for crying out loud! That and he appeared about 2in shorter than Conan O'Brien in 1998.

These 5ft11 claims really are pathetic.
Charlie said on 5/Nov/13
Laurece Harvey was six foot and Harris looked about the same as him in "The Long and the Short and the Tall", a very studio-bound war film made in 1960.
Ciaran said on 24/Oct/13
Richard Harris was never 6'1" even with clever shoes. He was 5'11" maximum.
John said on 23/Oct/13
Harris always wore lifts after he became famous. In "The Wreck of the Mary Deare" he was four inches shorter than Charlton Heston and Gary Cooper.
Liam said on 23/Oct/13
I saw Harris at a New York fundraiser for NORAID in the late 1970s and he was definitely wearing built up shoes. I doubt if he was even six feet tall.
Andrew said on 23/Oct/13
I met Richard at the Coal Hole pub in London 2000 when he was nearly seventy, he was definitely less than six foot.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/Oct/13
I doubt he wore lifts. Even in the Harry Potter movies he looked a solid 6ft1
John said on 11/Oct/13
Harris wore lifts in "The Wild Geese", a film he hated, so he would look the same height as Roger Moore.

In "The Wreck of the May Deare" you can see he was only 5'11" without lifts.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Sep/13
@Jake: 1.83 m- 1.85 m: that might be closer. But, was he still 6ft1 range toward the end of his life?
He still looked around it in movies.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 5/Aug/13
Watching Unforgiven I'd have said he was 6ft1-6ft2.
Very close to Hackman
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Jul/13
Well, if Moore's peak height is correct then Harris was 187cm also
