How tall was Richard Harris

Richard Harris Height

6ft 0 (182.9 cm)

Irish Actor best known for roles in movies like Unforgiven, The Wild Geese, The Guns of Navarone, This Sporting Life, Red Desert, A Man Called Horse, The Field, Gladiator and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. At an AFI lifetime achievement award for Kirk Douglas, Richard described himself as 6ft 2 in height, although he has claimed to be even taller, in a 1968 interview stating "I'm still 6 feet 3 inches when I leave the room".

I read a synopsis...of my life and these things the studios hand out. And they say I'm Six Foot Three. Which is THREE inches more than I am.
What I hate about our business today is the elitism the so-called stars have imposed on the public, which I think is obnoxious. It's a joke. Who cares about Madonna going to the opening tonight? Now you have guys like Tom Cruise, who's a midget, and has eight bodyguards, all six feet tall, which makes him even more diminutive. He disappears behind them. It's an absolute joke.

After seeing photos of Harris with Anthony Hopkins I think he had to have been over 6ft flat in his prime. Hopkins is listed at 5'9" prime and even as an older guy Harris height difference looked considerably more than 3 in. I think the original 6'1" listing you had for him was fair.

Shaw was could have been a 5ft10 and change guy but no way 5ft11+ except in shoes. He wore lifts in From Russia With Love to bridge the gap next to Connery...

Harris I think had to have been over 6ft in his prime, how much though is the question. He pulls off a strong 6ft1/weak 6ft2 kind of look in movies and his quotes are all over the place...6ft to 6ft3!

He was probably at least 184cm range in his youth

6' dead on Gladiator according to wardrobe lady I nattered to on another film. So must have been 6' 1" when younger at least. Also read someone saying Harrison Ford was only 5'11" - This is total rot and again, as I'm interested in these things I asked the women who know in costume on the set of the Star Wars film I was fortunate enough to be in &, (coincidentally as it happens,) both ladies who delat with him said he was still a good 6ft - so like Harris he must have been at least 6' 1" at his peak - probably 6'2" - he's noticeably taller - like 2 or 3 inches than 5'11" Robert Shaw in Force 10 from Navarone & in case anyone was wondering about Shaw I can say first hand his relatives will confirm he was a good 5'11 & 1/2 in his 40's. Over n Out.

Yeah the Bond tailors heights. I'm not sure whether this started as an internet rumour or are actual genuine measurements from the Bond tailors. I've never been measured for a suit but I'd have thought that they would have taken measurements like inside leg, waist and chest size and arm length rather than height. Maybe its different though at an elite tailors who are fitting for film stars

And yet I think Connery was 6-1.5 like the Bond tailors said

Watched the Molly Maguires last night, good cast OK film. In one scene Harris looked similar in height to Sean Connery although less robust in physique. In another Connery looked about 3 inches taller putting Harris back to the 5'11'' or so he looked next to Gary Cooper in The Wreck of the Mary Deare. Could just be angles or the slope of the ground.

I think there is a possibility though that Harris frequently wore the fabled 'Hollywood lifts in the shoes'. The reports of his height from those who encountered him in real life are all over the place. Some say well over 6ft some say 5'11''. Maybe he looked taller on some occasions because he was wearing lifts during these encounters.

It has to be said though that Sean Connery was a pretty big guy in his youth. Tall and well built a genuine 6'2'' or thereabouts although not ripped like todays gym bunny's and protein shake drinkers. I think younger people might look at the early Bond films and think Connery wasn't really in great shape but years ago there weren't many people with seriously ripped physiques that you nowadays encounter on a daily basis. In the 50s and 60s guys didn't spend 2 hrs a day in the gym simply to look good. It was probably considered unmanly in those days for men to worry over their appearance to any degree.
movieguy12 said on 30/May/20
Harris was not rake thin as suggested below at least as a younger man. He looked pretty athletic in his 40s in a Man Called Horse. He seemed very broad shouldered for his height. In later years he seemed to becoming noticeably less robust in part no doubt because of the years of hard living.

A story that been told before is that when he went out to Hollywood to star in Caprice, Doris Day was shocked at his appearance expecting to meet a 6'4'' dark haired hunk in the Rock Hudson mould. This was because he looked imposing in This Sporting Life but in that film he was cast with mainly smaller guys to play up the appearance of size and brute force. Although Jack Watson at 6'2'' looked a bit taller. Day was shocked as Harris was in his own words barely 6ft, red haired and balding.

Then again he has also claimed to be 6'2'' and 6'3''. Roger Moore said he was taller than Harris. Sean Connery looked taller. Gary Cooper looked 4 inches taller than a young Harris. However there is a believable story below from a guy who says he met Harris and guessed him as 6'2''.

Rob, how much height do you recon he lost in his 60's and towards the end? Here he is (at 63 years of age) with Anthony Hopkins (56) in 1993: Click Here.
Editor Rob
He could still look 6ft range, you can see why many would give him 6ft 1/2 to 1 as a peak
BT said on 10/May/20
Are these the kind of lifts you're talking about, Rob? Click Here. If he was consistantly wearing boots like those, it could explain why so many people think he was at least 6'1.
Editor Rob
It's a decent heel he has there.
movieguy12 said on 2/May/20
Richard Harris is another one its hard to pin down. He has given his own height as being both 6ft and 6'2'' and can look either depending on the occasion. Although in the past some on here have claimed to have met him and guessed him as 5'11''. Elsewhere I have seem him described as being a big guy even in older years. Roger Moore said he was taller than Harris on the set of the Wild Geese at least until the day Harris appeared on set wearing lifts in his boots. So Harris probably did use artificial means to boost his height at least sometimes. On the Molly Maguires, Harris did appear to be a little shorter than Sean Connery.

I struggle to see a flat 6ft.

Looked a strong 6ft1/weak 6ft2 in The Field and Patriot Games. 184cm minimum
David duFresne said on 3/Apr/20
Rob, this is probably the worst estimate I've seen of yours. If you are doubtful of his claims, at least give him 6'1/2 inch, although I'd be fairly confident he was 6'1 peak if not a bit over. Unless you are always starring with Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffma, 6' flat just isn't that tall in Hollywood. It really isn't that tall in real life either. A person bragging about that height in just about any nation in the western world would be thought a fool.
Editor Rob
I can see why many would give him 6ft 1/2 to 1 range.
He did wear lifts at one stage when he was married to Ann Turkel.
Mon said on 14/Sep/19
Too much reliance on what actors have said about their heights of late I am afraid. Of all the heights I am the most confident this is wrong. Harris was more like 6'1'' peak. I am 5'11.75'' and walked past him as he was abling along the Kings Road one day in the 90s and in deck shoes like I was wearing he was perceptibly taller than me (yes I was checking) even though he was a somewhat stooped older man who looked shorter until you got close. So I would put him as a flt six foot by that point, but he had lost something by then I am sure. In The Molly MaGuires he was definitely below Sean Connery, but certainly not two inches. A weak six one (peak).

Google Molly Mcguires, since he claimed 6 and 6'1 when he was down playing his height would 6'0.5 not be better and then downgrade connery and o'toole to 6' 1.5 not be more accurate.

You mean Patriot Games; Harris wasn't in The Fugitive.

The interesting thing with Richard Harris is that he seemed to be two inches taller in his 60s than he was when he was 30. I think the reason for this is fairly simple......
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 5/Apr/18

The Tall Guy said on 22/Mar/18
I once met Richard Harris in person at a regular haunt of his in London, a pub called the Coal Hole, which was in The Strand and next door to the Savoy where he stayed regularly when in London. It surprised me how tall he was, because he never looked too tall on the screen. I'm a good six foot four and he was almost as tall as me - certainly 6'2". One time he had his son with him and he was 6'4", the same as me. There was no sign of them wearing lifts. This would have been when he was in his mid sixties, quite late in life. People on here who say he was six foot or less are talking nonsense.

I once worked as an extra on the set of a movie called Burke & Hare, and the director, John Landis, pointed me out as "the tall guy".

The best way of analysing someone's height is to watch them walk through doorways. I'm just watching the 1974 movie, Juggernaut, and Harris walks through doorways with two or three inches to spare, whilst stooping a little. Most doorways are around six feet six.
berta said on 7/Mar/18
how was he able to look 1-2 cm taller than harrison ford ina movie if he was only 183. ford was not 181-182 cm tall shortest possible for forp peak is weak 6 footer. i think this guy must have been 184
Newman said on 28/Feb/18
Always thought he looked 6'1 or 6'2 from seeing him in some of those 1970s films like Wild Geese and Juggernaut.
My dad met him briefly in a hotel lift in Liverpool in 1998; embarrassingly asking if he was "Lawrence of Arabia?" He politely responded by saying "no, that's the other one" meaning his mate Peter O'Toole.

Anyway, I asked my dad how tall he was, half expecting him to say he was even taller than my original guess. He said he was the same height as himself. He's 5'10.5. He'll have been in his late 60s by then, but surely wouldn't have shrunk 2-3 inches.

Having recently seen some of his early films such as the Wreck of the Mary Deare and This Sporting Life and standing next to known actors such as Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston and Jack Watson; he clearly was never taller than 5ft 11.5.

Someone mentioned below that he auditioned for roles after This Sporting Life in America and they commented how short he was. I think deep down that hurt him and he wore lifts from time to time afterwards. Not trolling here; maybe check out the footage yourself below:

when you look at that clip of his entrance to the David Letterman show, he's right there with Letterman. He always appeared to be about 2 1/2 inches taller than Johnny Carson and an inch below McMahon so 6'2 in his prime seems about right. I do remember Harris saying that in the rugby movie he made "the Sporting Life" he was surrounded with shorter actors to make him appear 6'4, consistent with the role of the rugby enforcer he was playing. He dyed his hair for that role. He said when he showed up in Hollywood, they were surprised to see that he was blonde and only 6'1 or so. He's a confusing one, but 6'1 minimum in his prime.

I wouldn't be surprised if Harris was 5'11" and rounded up to six foot.
movieguy said on 8/Aug/17
Listening to the clip with his son it was Harris himself who claimed 6'4'' but this looks like it was to grab the part of King Arthur in Camelot alongside very tall Vanessa Redgrave. Harris obviously realized he was exaggerating. Gary Cooper was much taller in Wreck of Mary Deare where Harris looked 5'11''.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Aug/17
He's a lot like Orson Welles who was reported anywhere from 6ft to 6ft5
movieguy said on 5/Aug/17
The strange thing about Harris is that he describes himself as different heights on different occasions. Claims 6ft flat, then 6'2'' then finally claims 6'3''. There is even the 6'4'' claim from his son. I'd go for the lower at 6ft although I can recall some going for as low as 5'11'' for Harris. I do think this guy wore lifts on a number of occasions although I'm usually skeptical about such claims.

I think it's a bit drastic to downgrade him by a full inch based on that one clip. Harris'own estimations of his height were all over the place, 6'-6'4". I agree that in the clip he probably exaggerated down in order to make a point. He could look 6'1"a lot of the time, and if he really was 6' flat surely you would have noticed it before now?

Everyone is way off. the movie Mutiny on the Bounty 1962 he was the same height as Marlon Brando who played Fletcher Christian, he played Seaman Mills. In the movie he was shorter than all the other Seaman's in the movie.Marlon Brando was about 5 ft 8 inches. In the beginning of the movie he was escorted on the ship by 2 female companions who were both taller than him. Even in Heels most women are around 5 ft 7 in heels. Richard Harris has t be 5 ft 8 and because he looked very short in the movies he probably most likely wore shoe lifts. There is no way he was over 5 ft 10 absolutely not.I am 5 ft 10 myself in the afternoon i am 5 ft 9.5 and i am taller than every guy i see in Canada. Richard Harris looked surprisingly short for a guy listed as 6 ft tall. When you try to figure out a persons height it is best to compare them with a person who is average or shorter for example Harris being measured to Marlon Brando. They were both the exact same height through out the entire movie and Marlon Brando was noted as being 5 ft 8 to 5 ft 9 max so that would make Harris around the same height.

Rob can you add a photo? Yes, I've noticed this with RIchard Harris myself, sometimes he can look 6' range but other times actually pull off 6'1.5. I'm going to be on the lookout for his footwear in films from now on, cheers movieguy!!

Listening to commentary on Wild Geese dvd. Roger Moore says in one scene Richard Harris suddenly appeared taller than himself and co-star Richard Burton whereas he had previously been shorter. Surprised he was shorter than Burton can't quite believe this, Moore was always tall. They noticed he was wearing boots with lifts. I think Harris may well have been a habitual lift wearer. I think 6ft but no taller.
Editor Rob: It is entirely beleivable, I am certain some actors engaged in Lift Wars in films...

A) 188.5cm/186.5cm
B) 188cm/186cm
C) 187.5cm/185.5c
D) 187cm/185cm
E) 186.5cm/184.5cm
Editor Rob: C I feel, but even today I still think he could look over a wider range

Tom, he's further away from the camera though. Harris was quite silent at that stage. He did a couple of low budget movies but really I think he focused primarily on sobering up.

Arch, it's agreed by many Ford was never quite a 6ft1 guy. But he wasn't under 6ft at that point.
The other 6ft1 range guy in that movie was James Earl Jones.

My point is that Harris was 62 when that came out and he still looked a strong 6ft1
Arch Stanton said on 9/Sep/15
OK I agree he briefly does look a bit taller there, but Ford was also shorter than another 6'1 range actor in it, more likely Ford was under 6'1. At times Harris could look 186-7 though.

Zediah, if you're out there, what was the "one good movie?" Harris is in several of my personal favorites, is why I ask. I'll agree that he turned in some pretty bad acting jobs, but some good ones as well. He was excellent in Mutiny on the Bounty, for example.

Or maybe Harris wore built up shoes?
Mon said on 19/Apr/14
By my way of thinking several means more than a couple or a few. It could mean four, but I think it more strongly implies five or more.

I walked right beside him, and I am certain Harris (with somewhat stooped 'older man' posture) was still a rock solid 6 foot tall in the early 90's. Probably a little over 6 foot. Considering that he had visibly aged facially and in muscle tone by that time, to the extent he looked about 15 years older than his true age, it is very difficult to believe that he was not at least a weak 6'1'' when he played beside Cooper, who was 6'3'', and not a particularly strong 6'3'' judging by the way he looked as a young man next to Charles Bickford (when Bickford was in his 30's). So Cooper must have had help to LOOK more than 2 inches taller than a peak Harris, because he certainly wasn't.
Jeremy said on 14/Apr/14

I walked up behind and then past Harris on the Kings Road in the early 90's when he was apparently taking a leisurely stroll. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 4/Jan/14
Ugh...enough with the lifts! You just can't except that he was a tall guy who didn't have great posture. He didn't give two 'you know whats' about how tall he would appear next to other actors. Did it ever occur to you that he normally arrived on set late and extremely hungover?
Robert said on 4/Jan/14
There's no doubt that Harris looked tall by wearing lifts, like Richard Burton. It's just a shame he wasted whatever talent he had and only left behind a very few good movies.
Gabe said on 3/Jan/14

Yes. Gary Cooper was 6'3", so Harris can't have been any more than 5'11" without his lifts. However, Cooper himself always claimed he was 6'2", in which case Harris can't have even been 5'11".

Mon said on 31/Dec/13
Going in the same direction as him, I walked past Richard Harris as he ambled along on the Chelsea Road one summer day during the early 90's. He was wearing low heeled shoes (deck shoes I think) and although bit hunched in the way older men get, you could see he was a tall broad shouldered man diminished by age and hard living. I am slightly under 6ft and I am certain he was slightly over 6 foot tall at that time. A weak 6'2'' in his day is quite likely, especially as he once managed to hold his own in a well publicized pub brawl with some Smithfield meat porters.

johnhmproctor said on 15/Dec/13
I too remember the Parkinson interview - back in the old days when 'chat shows' really did have in depth coverage, and Richard Harris's was one of the longest Parkinson ever did (it was open-ended as it was the last show on a Saturday night). Anyway, to business: Harris definitely said he was barely six foot and shocked Hollywood with how short he was, having been surrounded deliberately with short actors in his breakthrough film This Sporting Life. I always assessed heights compared with Parkinson, who was about 5'11". Harris looked about the same to me and I thought he was pushing it a bit even for his 'bare 6 foot'. By the way, I always knock at least an inch off published heights. Publicity material will hardly ever go for height without shoes, at least for men.

I remember watching him on a chat show with Michael Parkinson in the lates 80s/early 90s I guess and I remember he did look tall about 6'2''. Then again Harris himself has claimed that he just about scraped 6ft. Apparently when he first went to Hollywood the film producers were disappointed to see that he had reddish blond hair and wasn't that imposing physically. From watching This Sporting Life where Harris had his hair dyed and was deliberately cast with small actors, the Hollywood guys expected a 6'4'' Rock Hudson type hunk.

He had just finished talking about being a former drunk, and of his divorce(s), and how he wouldn't change anything. I was impressed with his honesty, and never forgot it. Anyhow, what's wrong with being 5' 10"? Height doesn't make you a great actor.

The claims of 6'2" and 6'3" are preposterous.

Roger Moore said that during The Wild Geese he noticed Harris getting taller than him and called him out for wearing lifts. In the promotion of Camelot, a press release noted Harris, Franco, and Redgrave were all 6 ft. Also, he never seemed taller than his second wife, Ann Turkel, who was also 6 ft. He made a movie back before he was thirty with Robert Mitchum, A Terrible Beauty. It doesn't seem available anywhere but would be interesting seeing how he measures up to Mitchum. So I figure he was a weak 6'1" at best.

He was 6"0.75(185cm) IMO

I'd say about 6'2''. I know some swear they met him and he was 5'10'' but I don't buy it.

Rob is 187cm possible?

[Editor Rob: I'm not convinced he was that tall]

I agree with James, 187 peak sounds spot on. Take a good look at the Peckinpah film 'Major Dundee', the Antonnini film 'Red Desert', and the Anderson film 'This Sporting Life' and compare him with the established heighs of some of his co-stars like Heston. I think he definitely lost a bit of height by the time he was in his 60s so unless he using some kind of lifts for his whole career which is doubtful because he clearly didn't need them I'd say a peak of 187.

Still looked about 6"1 in Harry Potter movies...

I think a peak of 6'1.5 (187cm) is possible. In 1992 next to 6'0 Harrison Ford he looked a full 6'1 and he was 62 in that movie.

Gary Cooper was not 6'5".

186-187 Harris would result to a 6-5+ Gary Cooper.
