Rob, how about 5'9.25" peak?

Marlon Brando strangely had an inch on Duvall in The Godfather. Duvall was more likely 5'9" than 5'10" then in my opinion. Probably 5'7" range now.

How kind of Don Corleone to take Tom in when Sonny found him wandering the streets aged 11. Corleone was a man of honour and good to all who respected him.

Tom did well for himself, becoming a lawyer.

He wasn’t their half brother but their step brother.

wasn't he just a cab driver?

I noticed that in rewatching the film the other day. Somebody should write a book of film height bloopers, like Karl Malden describing Dean Martin as 6 ft 2, despite being a good three inches shorter and Malden once claiming 6'1.5!
Sink'em said on 21/Mar/23
Interesting that Michael Douglas was described as “taller” than Duvall in “Falling Down” despite the two men having the same prime height listing.

They were never close enough together in any scenes to tell whether this statement had any merit though, but I thought that that was interesting.
Sandy Cowell said on 2/Mar/23
I could see 5ft9.25 for Robert Duvall while watching Godfather II tonight. He played Tom Corleone, the half-brother of Vito Corleone’s three other sons and sister, Connie Corleone, played by Talia Shire.

Robert is probably no more than 5ft8 at the most now, aged 92. Here’s a toast to his health: 🥂

5’9.25” peak is conceivable. 5’9.5” is pushing it.

It’s hard to believe that Robert Duvall played “Boo Radley”, considering his modest height.

🎂🎁 Happy 9️⃣0️⃣th Birthday Robert! 🎁🎂

The fantastic living legend, Robert Duvall, celebrates his Ninetieth Birthday today. What a coincidence to jump from one 'Godfather' actor - Diane Keaton - to another, both sharing the same Birthday.

I got seriously into 'The Godfather' trilogy one Christmas, when they showed the three addictive movies on three consecutive days. I enjoyed them so much that I bought the box set before I'd even seen the third film. I adore the music 🎶 and the beautiful scenery as well.

Peak height - 5ft9.5; Today - 5ft8.

Rob, do you think there is any possibility that Robert Duvall could have been less than 5’9” at his peak?
Editor Rob
I wouldn't bet on it
Sinclair said on 19/Aug/20
Duvall’s peak height is a puzzling one. I am tempted to go as low as 5’8.5” for Duvall’s peak because I thought Robert Redford had him by about two inches in The Natural. Actually, Duvall is listed at 174cm on many sites. However, Duvall could look a solid 5’9” in The Godfather next to Marlon Brando. Thus, I would give Duvall a peak estimate of a flat 5’9”. Anything over 5’9.5”, I would not believe, whilst anything under 5’8.5” for Duvall’s peak, I would not believe.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 28/Apr/20
@ Nik - I can't dispute that! It's a Francis Ford Coppola classic and, as an added bonus, the music is excellent. 🎶
Nik Ashton said on 26/Apr/20
@ Sandy Cowell - I’ll take my chances! 😉

I don’t blame you for heading straight down to Blockbusters to buy the Godfather box set, that’s called having good taste!
Bradley said on 25/Apr/20
He tried to boot up in Joe Kidd but Eastwood dwarfed him.
Jtm said on 25/Apr/20
why is he listed 5'8.5 when he's clearly shorter than daniel kaluuya listed 5'8.5 here?
Editor Rob
Don't think I touched his current listing for a good few years, so by age 89 he can look at most 5ft 8 now.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 23/Apr/20
I should have added that there is such a thing as an average height loss per age, but I didn't - so I'm doing it now:

There's such a thing as an average height LOSS per age.

All better!

Miss Sandy Cowell said on 23/Apr/20
...but since was there an average height/age chart? Not so, Nik!

Robert has starred in some excellent films and will get 5ft9.5 peak and 5ft8.5 now. One Christmas they showed the entire Godfather trilogy. I was down Blockbusters as soon as they were open to buy the boxset! Cheers Nik!
😉👍

I doubt he's over 5'8" these days, but I think he's lost remarkably little height just like William Shatner, who is the same age. Duvall seemed a bit shorter than 5'8.75" Marlon Brando in The Chase, or certainly no taller. Granted, Brando wore cowboy boots in that film, may have been shot to look taller since he was the star and Brando wore lifts at various times in his life, but he wasn't looking taller than usual at other times in the film since he looked more than an inch shorter than 5'10" Robert Redford at the end and I don't think Redford wore cowboy boots in the film. I'd guess more of a flat 5'9" or maybe 176 cm peak.
berta said on 29/Apr/18
he is very lucky to have only lost 1 inch at age 87 that is extremelly good
Arch Stanton said on 22/Sep/17
I saw Duvall in a film about 10 days ago I can't remember what it was and who he was stood by but I remember thinking that he was looking just 5 ft 9 flat in comparison. There's a chance of 176.
KH said on 9/May/17
Duvall is really old of course he has lost significant height. Was around average height in his younger years. Whether it was 5'9 or 5'9.5 who really knows because that kind of height difference looks the same to naked eye. The listing is fine.

Saw him twice in restaurants in Northern Virginia. He is probably 5'7".
James said on 3/Jun/16
jtm,

I agree with you. Definitely 5'7" or 5'8" today. And even though he is shorter than most western movie stars, he stacks up just fine. He is by far the best western movie star under 6 feet. Only my opinion. And he will always be Gus to me.
jtm said on 7/Nov/15
he was never taller than 5'9 and probably 5'7 range today.

Did this guy ever look young LOL? Even in his early films of the 60s like Mocking bird and The Chase he look middle aged!!

Watched Mr V's clip from The Fuigtive on Youtube. Barry Morse edges him out. Duvall was 5'9 max, imo.
Lethal Cahew said on 30/Jan/15
I will say he is 5'7. I worked at a Movie theater back in 1993 and he came by for the "who shot Ernest Hemingway's" special showing. I shook his hand and he stood my same high, which is 5'7. Any taller on paper and is just PR.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Jan/15
In fairness though when stood his best he still looks 5'8 range with Downey accounting for his footwear.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Jan/15
Really looks shorter than 5'8.5 in The Judge, he looks now like he's lost nearer 2 inches, although he is hunched a bit.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Nov/14
Thanks for the update! Well, he made De Niro look 5'8" range in True Confessions. He could look 5'10 range at times.
Arch Stanton said on 14/Oct/14
Rob, can you update with a photo and American actor, best known for roles in films such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Tender Mercies (Oscar win), The Apostle, Lonesome Dove, Network, The Great Santini, True Grit, and To Kill a Mockingbird to the top? I'd also suggest True Confessions and Falling Down (a memorable role opposite Michael Douglas) but you probably won't squeeze them in. He was in so many great films. Tallest I saw him look was in Tender Mercies where he looked about 6 ft but had on cowboy boots!
Lee Whit said on 3/Oct/14
Just watched movie "Countdown" 1968. I would swear he and Caan are near spot on the same height, and this would be close to a peak height given the year of the movie. Both probably just a shade under 5 10"
Mr.V said on 3/Sep/14
So, Rob, what's your opinion on the clips I posted?

Also, I made some comments on the John Cleese page that haven't been added, was there a problem with them?
Mr.V said on 2/Sep/14
I seriously doubt Duvall was ever in the 5'10" mark in his youth.

Now, here's a clip from an early appearance he did in the "Wild, Wild West":

Watch when, from 20:15 onwards, he's face to face with Robert Conrad: they look similar height. Conrad is listed at 5'7" here and I know some people say he wore lifts in the show, but still, if Duvall was 5'9.5" at the time, he might have been around 179 cm in shoes. What kind of lifts might have Conrad been wearing to match his height?

Also, here's an early Duvall appearance in 'The Fugitive':

If you compare him to Barry Morse, also listed 5'9.5' here, at about 9.20 onwards, he appears to be a bit shorter. Even in the last minutes of the video (14.10 to the end), he's closer to the camera, but Morse still looks like he edges him a bit.

I believe the 5'8.5 he is now may not be much different from his peak height. What do you think, Rob?

He's around 80 years old now and has never lost much in height, he seemed to play more macho ladies man types after middle-age. I think recently he always plays the same guy now but he was a helluva an actor back in the 70s. Rob, could you add The Apostle, Lonesome Dove, Network, The Great Santini, True Grit and To Kill a Mockingbird to the top?

I told him I remembered him in a Fugitive TV episode - he asked what character did he play - I said I did not remember the name but that he was playing a guy in a wheelchair - he said very good. I was 5'9-1/2 back then bare feet - he was about an inch shorter in sneakers (I was in sneakers also)

BK_Daniel said on 24/Jun/08
Both Duvall and Glenn are slouching a bit so I'm not going to give Robert any points for that, despite this he still looks an inch taller than Glenn. In conclusion he is 5'9.5" now and maybe 5'10.5" peak.

^My previous statement makes sense if you assume his head ends where his hat does. If you want to downgrade him I would say 5'9" flat now and 5'10" peak height.

Glenn, "Secondhand Lions" was a really boring (though somewhat entertaining) family movie from 2004 with Duvall, Michael Caine and the kid from "The Sixth Sense". Duall's made far more awesome movies, like the ones you mentioned.

I saw Duvall at the Emmys, even spoke with him. He was wearing black cowboy boots with his tux. I'd say he was about three inches shorter than me so with the boots he was about 5'9". I believe Duvall was probably 5'9" when he was young and has shrunk to about 5'7" today. The other night I was at a birthday party for a friend of my wife and actor Harry Dean Stanton was there. He's listed at 5'8" but in person was no more than 5'6". I was standing right next to him and could easily look over the top of his head and that didn't change no matter how he was standing. Short little guy.

I was staying in a Puerto Rico Hotel for a week or so back in about 1989 and saw Robert Duval regularly at the gambling tables and stood next to him on a number of occasions. I am 5'9'' and was at least two or three inches taller than Duval who is a tiny guy in stature and body size. There is no way in the world that he is anywhere near 5'9'' or 5'10'' - he barely came up to my eyebrow.
