Rob, have a look at Fry with 6’5” listed (he might be close to 6’6” though) Stuart Broad.

It would be generous to say that Fry looks 6’2”.

@ Dream - That was a rather enjoyable find at just gone 7 in the morning, I must say! Stephen Fry starring with Tim Robbins in the film 'IQ' - well, I never knew that...

Hugh Laurie held up well in comparison to John Cheese too, there's no denying that, but towered over him while he was a snivelling mess on the floor! I love watching Fry and Laurie together - their shared sense of humour and years of friendship shines through every time you see them. 😊😄

Stephen gets 6ft5. I measured him with my beady little measuring eye in my dream last week! 👁️😁👍📏

Thanks for sending those videos in. I can't think of a b

Stephen Fry did look 1.5 inches shorter than John Cleese, though.

While watching Stephen, as Melchett, having a polite and amusing Festive conversation just now with Blackadder, I couldn't help but think, "Rowan, (as 'Blackadder') doesn't have to look right up to Stephen the way an average-sized man would. Stephen, who stood around 6ft5 those days, doesn't exactly tower over Rowan, though the difference is still stark staring obvious, so Rowan can't be THAT much shorter than Stephen and I reckon he can't have been unduly below 6ft at all when this was made!"

The caring and considerate chin-wag went not unlike this:

Blackadder: "Ah! Melchett! Greetings! I trust that Christmas brings you its traditional mix of good food and violent stomach cramps!"

Melchett: "...and the compliments of the Season to you, Blackadder! May the Yuletide log slip from your fire and burn your house down!"

You can't beat a good friendship!

😂😂😂...🏠🔥🎄🎁

Stephen gets his usual 6ft5, because that is what I see before my eyes, and Rowan looks just under 6ft.

Still keeping a good posture over 60. Hardly see Fry losing height yet. 6'4 1/2 legit.

Last night I saw Stephen playing Charles the First, a man reputedly of 5ft4! It is from 'Blackadder's The Cavalier Years', and Stephen spoke in our own Prince Charles's voice! It was very funny; I've heard that Prince Charles and Stephen are friends.

At that time, Stephen was probably 6ft5 - that's a whopping 13" difference to the ill-fated King!
Sandy Cowell said on 16/Feb/19
I'm so excited! I'm about to watch 'Duel and Duality', with Stephen Fry playing the Duke of Wellington! It's even funnier than the one wherein Blackadder has to accompany his Master, the Prince Regent, George, played by Stephen's comedy partner Hugh Laurie, to the theatre. "What's so bad about that?" you might be thinking. Well, the Prince Regent doesn't realise that it's a play; he thinks it's all real!

We get a glimpse of co-writer Ben Elton in the theatre one, hurling a bomb at the Prince! (Sense and Senility)

So on with the show....

(Lovely opportunities to compare Stephen, Hugh, Rowan and Tiny Tony!)

I've heard from my brother that a member of Stephen's QI team has died at the age of 57.

I don't know who he is yet, but my heart goes out to Stephen.

Life is so cruel.

I love Stephen for his sensitivity, his humour and for making my life a whole lot happier.

Dream(5'9.5") said on 5/Nov/18
The only time a Prime Fry (Good lord, that sounded odd) didn't look close to 6'5" was in two scenarios:

Fry looked an easy inch shorter than an aging John Cleese, but many people (including myself) would argue that Cleese was more of a solid 6'5" guy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fry did say that Douglas Adams was much taller than him though I think Douglas Adams could have been over 6'5", based on what John Cleese has said about him as well.
Dream(5'9.5") said on 16/Sep/18

Honestly, I could see 6’4.625” or even 6’4.75” for Fry. 6’5” is something I wouldn’t argue: Cleese (when he was aging) looked 1-2 inches taller than Fry.
Gracian said on 4/Sep/18
Hey Rob, can I argue the 195 cm peak height and today 193 cm for Stephen? You said that Stephen could sometimes look close to 6'5", here is his photo from 1991 alongside Pamela Stephenson (she has a large heels advantage over him):
He is 61 years old. Rob, can you see the peak height 6'4.75" and the current 6'4" flat height as possible for him?
Editor Rob
I don't know if Fry really was what you call a solid 6ft 5, though at times he might have seemed it.

6ft 4.5 up to 5 is of course the most likely range. No chance only 6ft 4 flat or little chance under 6ft 4.5

@ MSJC - I agree that if anyone is entitled to be called a National Treasure, it is Stephen! I adored his (Anthony Cecil Hogmanay) Melchett character! What a funny name - HOGMANAY!!!

That's the name he gave in 'Blackadder Goes Forth' when he presides over a court case about his pigeon 'Speckled Jim', which has been eaten by Blackadder! Remember? Of course you do!
Sandy Cowell said on 30/Jun/18
I can't think of a more pleasing way of passing a bit of time at 20 minutes past 2 in the morning than watching an episode of 'QI' - hosted by Stephen Fry, of course!

This morning I did just that! The episode was called 'Denial and Deprivation' and was, of course, extremely funny as well as informative. Among the things up for discussion was the height of a yak. Stephen said they are 6ft5, and followed that with "The same height as me!"

That is the second time I have heard him say that. This particular episode hailed from 2006, so Stephen was 48/49, so I doubt he had lost any height yet. Now, 12 years on, he might be a quarter- inch shorter.

Today I shall give the great Stephen Fry 6ft4.75.

With his heavy build and bad posture Fry can be a hard one to pin down. However in Blackadder he towered over strong 5'11" Rowan Atkinson and always had a noticeable height advantage over Laurie, so 6'4.5" peak sounds right. At nearly 60 though he could be 6'4" flat.

In a interview last month Tim Wonnocott see( wonnocott on Austrialian B H) said that charles was only 6ft 1 ( 186cm), he cannot be 6ft 6. Dan snow is 6ft 6 and on celebrity roadtrip was about 5 inches taller. I think that Charles has told misinformative to millions of viewers. Stephen Fry is taller than charles. It is the truth

Jake, Penn is tall at 6'7, but he's wearing HUGE heels in that video and is always closer to the camera. Take away those two factors and Fry is almost the same height.

There is a video on youtube of 6"6.5 foot penn jillette standing next to fry. Fry definately looks a good 2 or 3 inches shorter. I'd put him at 6 ft 4.

Here has has Daniel Day-Lewis by 5-6 inches while slouching on one foot:

Fry looks 6'7 to me.

He looks like and absolute giant when he stands up in this video (at 3:20). He makes Bob Geldof look tiny, and midge Ure look like a dwarf. He looks at least a foot taller than Ure.

Yes Fry was around 3 inches taller than Ross. If Ross is 6'1.5 and Fry 6'4.5" then thats make sense.
Alex said on 28/Feb/09
In a QI episode talking about the height of the wild yak, Fry says it's 6'5" which he claims is his own height.
Doug said on 24/Jan/09
Funny it never occurred to me before that he was so tall. I guess it is because of his heavy build it makes him look shorter than a skinny guy would of the same height. I thought he looked about 2.5 inches taller than Jonathan Ross which would make him around 6'4" but if somebody says he was the same height as that very tall Tim Robbins this is easily accurate. ~~~~

James, this guy is still at least 6ft4.

I saw an interview with Stephen Fry on TV...and at one point in the interview Stephen clearly states that Hugh Laurie is 6 foot 2 and he is 6 foot 5.

Looks 6-6 standing next to Daniel Day-Lewis.
Alex V. said on 18/May/08
One thing curious is that Fry looks always slouching; Robbins, Cleese, Stiles all looked one inch taller than Stephen but as soon as he puts a better posture, seems so tall as them. One case that i didn't see this was in Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson where Fry looked so tall if not taller than Clarkson.

Actually if you look at this site and click on the links, you'll see a video (there are 6 links for 6 videos). In 3 of them (Moaning Minnie, Big Mouth Billy, Rulebound Reggie) Cleese and Fry appear together. Cleese looks to be the taller of the two. Easily an inch difference I'd say.

Yeah Rob, during that episode, Cleese looked cleary taller than Fry but close to the end, Fry putted a better posture and looked as tall as Cleese, (maybe Cleese is/was 1 or 2 cm taller).

I remember seeing a corporate training video at college, which featured John Cleese, Stephen Fry and Rik Mayall. After doing a little diggin' I found out it was called "Managing Problem People Series: Case Studies in Leadership".

There's a small pic of Cleese and Fry. Fry looks shorter but also slouches a bit.

Check out Fry on Whose Line Is It Anyway, there is plenty of footage on Youtube. He has atleast 3" on the 6'2" Peter Cook, way back in 1988, and in an episode in 1997 he is nearly the same as 6'6" Ryan Stiles. Maybe he should be rounded up to the full 6'5".

I couldn't believe that his height is 6 ft 4.5 inc,whn I saw him at film V for Vendetta, that time I thought his height is 6 ft 2 inc and he is really tall as I thought but his height is not bad at all,he is perfect that he is tall:-)

How does he compare with Jeremy Clarkson who is listed as 6'5"?
CarbonM5 said on 29/Oct/07
Saw him two weeks ago in a restaurant in London. Absolutely huge bloke in height and build. 6ft 4 to 6ft 5 no problem.

I have the Fry & Laurie episode with John Cleese (Third Secret Policeman's Ball), Fry and Cleese are about the same height and Laurie is maybe two inches shorter.

[Editor Rob: I watched one episode of jeeves and worcester the other day, hadn't seen that for ages really, but noticed Fry in those days had damn good posture and could make laurie look 6ft 1 on some occasions.]

To 'Anonymous'.
He is not 5'11,,
No way. If you see some stuff he's been in or look up a vid on youtube, he reaches the top of the door frames, mostly.
And as for Laurie, well he's only a couple of inches shorter than Fry.
I'm only 5'0, so to me these are tall men, lol.
:]
DTA said on 5/Jul/07
thats just ridiculous, if laurie were 5'9" then the other cast in House must all be 5'5" and below which is clearly not the case. Omar Epps for example is NOT 5'5" or below... but hey whatever makes you feel good about yourself mate

In the 1997 film Wilde, where he plays Oscar Wilde, he is standing next to Ioan Gruffudd and Jude Law in quite few scenes, and he really towers over them by a huge margin. I'd say this 6'4.5" is bang on. Incidentally, Law and Gruffudd look a similar height to each other.
Cathy said on 24/Feb/07
When I saw him in Jeeves and Wooster I thought he only looked 6 foot 3, but I suppose I'm wrong. Regardless, any way you look at him he's tall (good thing!)
G-MANN said on 13/Jan/07
6'4.5" is pretty much correct. He's always been properly tall. During one BAFTA ceremony he described himself as 6'4" and a bit and when Tim Robbins came up to present an award they were about the same height. They were also in the 1994 film "I.Q." together.
Link said on 27/Dec/06
Fair ebnough rob, but if i can ive found a QI episode where he says 6'5"

Though that could be from just being lazy and didnt want to bother with saying 6'4.5"
6'7-footer said on 29/Nov/06
I reckon 6'5.5
andrew said on 10/Sep/06
6'5" at least. In Jeeves and Wooster he towers over Hugh Laurie.
David Welsh said on 1/May/06
I met him one and because he's bulky, he comes across as at least 6'6". He absolutely towered over me. However, he's said he's 6'4.5" so that must be right.
Link said on 25/Mar/06
On idbm or whatever bloody way round it is he is stated at 6'5"
1/2" makes little difference really.

either way-hes a very tall guy

[Editor Rob: has stated his height on tv awards show before, '6ft 4 and a half'...]
Gonzalo said on 10/Mar/06
He was a bit shorter than Tim Robbins, so I guess 6-4 1/2 seems accurate

Naomi, that's the best mis-type I've seen for some time. "Stockinged feed." It conjures up some pretty strange images!
Naomi said on 9/Jan/06
Oops, sorry, my mistake. He said 6"4 1/2 on Saturday Night Fry.
Naomi said on 30/Nov/05
He once said at start of Saturday Night Fry that he was "6"4 in my stockinged feed". But I've heard his height reported at 6"5 elsewhere.

[Editor Rob: he's shrinking!]
