Comment on the Height of James Coburn

Rob can you add a photo? @Rampage Honestly, I've seen Garner in a fair few films now and have increasingly thought he looked more 6'1 range. Coburn could look 189 like o'Toole at times, but the skinny frame can add that.

Taller than James Garner in The Great Escape.

Maybe near 6ft2 Rob?

Looks about only an inch taller than Leonard Nimoy in an episode of the late 1950's tv series M Squad. Coburn could have been 6'1.5" peak. I am curious if there are any pictures, movies or television episodes in which Coburn and Lee Marvin appear side by side. I would bet that Coburn and Marvin were very similar in height, as I suspect Marvin was probably between 6'1-6'1.5" peak height.

I was kind of surprised by how skinny looking he is in Ride Lonesome w/ Randolph Scott, I wouldn't be surprised if he weighed less than Jimmy Stewart's famed 138 pound measurement. It's possible that by the time he played Pat Garrett he was nearly 40 pounds more.

Coburn was just under 6'2". His career suffered somewhat from his similarity to Lee Marvin.

The Magnificent Seven are the Six Average-sized Guys and the One Tall Guy. Notice how everybody in that movie stays away from Coburn, unless he's sitting down.

I've been getting into him a lot recently. Smashing actor, great to watch. Could look 6'2.5" in Duck you Sucker (Fistful of Dynamite) and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

I thought he looked to be maybe struggling with the full 6'2" back in Ride Lonesome, being only a smidge taller than 6'1" Pernell Roberts and at times looking about a couple inches under Randolph Scott.
Here's an interesting shot of Coburn with Lee Van Cleef, who may have a slight edge over Coburn. Apparently they are "menacing" Clint Walker's good guy, LOL, in an episode of "Cheyenne". Van Cleef and Coburn were badasses but Walker was 6'6" and looked like he could have picked them both up at the same time.

189 is possible but no more.

He looks just about 3 inches shorter than 6'5" listed Andrew Duggan in In Like Flint. He had lanky legs though and a skinny frame which made him look deceptively tall.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Jan/14
Oddly he looks near 2 inches shorter than 6'2 listed Edward Mulhare in Our Man Flint.

Looks 6'2 max in Our Man Flint next to Lee J. Cobb, in fact at times Cobb can look 6 ft next to him.

No he wasn't much taller than Cary Grant in Charade 6'2 flat probably
Arch Stanton said on 26/Oct/13
George Kennedy had about 1,5 inches on him in Charade. Agree that 6'2.5" peak is about right.

A bit taller than James Garner in The Great Escape.
"James Coburn's height is 6ft 2.25in (189cm)"

I agree with Jake. 6'2-6'2.5 looks right for his peak. He was very lanky in addition, with rather long thin legs, which could make him appear taller.

He was shorter than Jeff Fahey on the hit list.

I met james Coburn about 1990 in London on several occasions, he was the same height as me 6'1", however he may have shrunk a little by then, also in the film The Carey Treatment 1972, one of the charcters say's "you're 6'2" right? Coburn's response is "no! 6'1.5"

I think coburn was a full 6ft 3 inches and he looked a good inch taller than gene hackman in the film bite the bullet.

Next to Andrew Duggan in In Like Flint, Coburn looks 6'1.2 to me.

On the biography channel described as 6'2''. I always thought he was taller, this must be because he was so skinny it added to the impression of great height.

Hi Frank! Just saw again the Americanization of Emily..Garner is at least 1" to 1.5" taller than Coburn in all the face to face scenes..from what I remember reading, Coburn was 6'3"..also read a few yrs. ago about his malady...Garner 6'2"-6.3" in '64..Coburn about the same taking into account shoes..and they were not cowboy boots!! take care!

Coburn was about 6'2" when he was young and shrank down to about 6'1" when he got to be older. I saw him at a party and noticed his hands were severely distorted from arthritis.

It seemed shorter than 6'3". He was in a RIFLEMAN episode in which he fought Lucas with torches. He looked no more than 6'2" then. I've seen him in a lot of films. I would think more like 6'1-2" at his peak.

I've seen him described as 6'4''. Remember him being on a chat show once and he looked it. I suspect the interviewer was short though and this might have emphasised his height. 6'3'' seems safe.
