There’s nothing quite like an introduction by Caroline Munro for arousing one’s interest in a film and tonight on the Talking Pictures channel, she has introduced George A Romero’s first ever movie from 1968, entitled ‘Night of the Living Dead’. If I’ve seen it before, it hasn’t been for many years, but I do recognise much of what I’ve seen so far.

Caroline added that this film inspired directors John Carpenter and David Cronenberg with their horror style. It’s in black and white, so won’t be as vivid as those from the aforementioned directors, but it’ll be good to observe how far film making of the horror genre has come in over half a century.

Rob maybe 6’4 ¾ for his peak would be a good starting point? You have Stephen King at 6’3 ½ peak, and safe to say he was at that mark in the photos Rampage provided.

Rob, I definitely wouldn't discount 6ft5 peak for George

Looks to have more than an inch on Stephen King. I think there's a pretty good chance Stephen was a 6ft3 and change guy (only ever claimed 6ft3 - never heard him say 6ft4).

Certainly in early 60's still looked a big 6ft 4 guy. Just a question if he was 6ft 4.5 or 5 peak.

195 cm listing would be fitting, Romero bordered on hugely tall even next to tall people like Stephen King.

Yeah he could give the impression of a 195cm guy in his prime. It 's rare to see a guy his age that tall as in the above pic! Not a massive fan of his films, some better than others but certainly a legend in his field.

What a delightful 'Tales From The Darkside' I've just seen!

It was from 1985 and about a young family with a little girl with a mischievous teddy bear. Entitled 'Ursa Minor', and the 10th episode of Season 2, the very name gives away that there're going to be bigger bears showing up.

The Mum starts believing that the naughty goings on can't be down to her daughter, her husband having a more light-hearted view. After chatting to a specialist on mysticism, she learns that the bear has a scary history dating back centuries.

She's advised to buy her daughter a doll, but she chooses one with golden hair! The teddy is thrown away, but predictably he returns at night, ruining the child's doll and eating her hair, which the mother finds in the teddy bear's 'stomach'. The story ends when the bear's parents, who are real bears, show up to take revenge for the Mum destroying their 'baby'!

The late, great George gets 6ft4.5.

I saw a very interesting episode of 'Tales From The Darkside' last night about a dishonest art dealer who got his hands on a 16th Century painting and Saint Bartholomew's drinking mug, which assuaged the thirsts of many suffering people.

He underestimated the power of the ancient cup and didn't realize that the painting was a depiction of someone being tortured by a red-clad monk from the Spanish Inquisition. Consequently, he was transported back some 4 centuries and it's then that we see that the picture is one of HIM being tortured. The monk questions him and he lies, and then the art dealer 'wakes up' back in the 20th Century again, the picture having changed.

Then there's a knock at the door and it's the red-clad monk, telling him how perilous the consequences are when you lie to the Spanish Inquisition.

The episode concludes with the greedy, dishonest art dealer spending the rest of eternity burning - that's if the second picture is to be believed, and the original one is a painting of his first fateful encounter, in which he shows no respect for Saint Bartholomew's bowl and throws it, and openly lies when he's questioned.

You could say that many of these stories have hidden meanings and are, in fact, modern day fairy tales, often with parable style qualities.

George gets 6ft4.75. I've often thought how annoying it could be to be so tall, and on show all the time. George's word 'indiscreet' sums it up nicely!

RIP George A Romero 🕯️XXX

Romero up close was taller than Lee, much closer to 6ft 4...but then, Lee was older and naturally had lost some height.

But the last time I seen Romero was in Brighton in 2015...believe me, he had shrunk to looking at most 6ft 2 then, compared to near 6ft 4 10 years previously. He looked more frail too then.

Arch Stanton said on 3/Feb/14
Of course!! Yeah I enjoyed Dawn of the Dead, a lot more action even if the quality of imagery isn't great and the white face paint and blood looks cheap and fake. How tall would you guess Scott Reiniger to be Sam? I always thought he never looked more than 5 ft 5, Ken has a full foot on him I reckon.
Sam said on 3/Feb/14
Have you seen Dawn of the Dead, Arch?
Arch Stanton said on 31/Jan/14
I know Sam, Night of the Living Dead seems to be one of the very few films I disagree with the majority on. For me it lacked suspense. It's a horror movie, yet within the first ten minutes a big black guy it boarding her up in the house and gives a commanding manly demeanour in doing so which destroys the vulnerability of her character. Compare it to Texas Chain in terms of creepiness. I rather liked the beginning and end of the the Night, that looked stylish, but it was the time inside the house with little focus on the zombies with so many people which took away the fear factor and suspense for me.
Sam said on 30/Jan/14
Respectfully disagree there, Arch. I think Night certainly shows it's age and budget but is a very effective, creepy film nonetheless. Dawn of the Dead is better IMO but they are both solid horror classics, I feel.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Jan/14
Zombie says on 26/Mar/13
Amazing director. Night of the living dead (1968) will always remain a classic amongst his other films.

I've got to disagree mate about Night of the Living. Most of the film is pretty boring. It's more a DIY movie of boarding up a house than a proper horror movie. Obviously the guy's a legend in the horror film world but it was a low budget film with amateur actors and it showed. If you want a good edgy movie from 1968 try Rosemary's Baby or Hour of the Wolf.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Jan/14
Rob any idea about Duane Jones, the black guy from Night of the Living? I see some bizarre 5'6 listings on the web but he's way bigger than the other guys in the film and actually gives a similar height impression/look to Sidney Poitier, he was surely more 6'1 or 6'2 than 5'6"!!

He's nearer 195cm than 190cm Andrea. You don't seem at all that bad , so apologies to say "pathetic" but I think you really underestimate people's heights, not the first time I've seen you do so.

190 you say..
EdgarHernandez said on 30/Sep/11
andrea ita, lets get this straight, the man is not forcing posture, in fact he is relaxed, and his chin is just 2 inches from being over his head, well, lets take in acount that a common head is, lets said between 8 to 9 inches, but this guys head as you can see, is massive. If romero just stod straight he could do what i do with my 5ft 1 mother, put his chin just over his head withour difucult. only guys at 6ft 4 or higer can do this.
ANDREA[ITA] said on 20/Sep/11
O yeah! Shaun! You are bad at estimates! I just see the photo and say what he looks! Rob's top head is a bit lower than his nose, so that would be no more than 17 cms! I just say in this photo he looks 190! Im not saying he's 190! :@
That's how a legit 190 man would look next to a 5'8 man!
Tommy said on 29/Aug/11
He looks like the old man from UP lol. Btw he looks what he claims
Shaun said on 27/Aug/11

Rob would you agree George looks 6'2.75 (190cm) compared to you in the photo??

He is clearly about 9" taller than Rob. That would make him about 6'5". If you can't see that, then you don't know what you're talking about. He is 6'4.5" minimum next to Rob. I'd bet my life on that.

I think he appears 6ft 4 range.

although I think he looked very close in height to kevin sorbo that day!
Davy Jones said on 14/Apr/11
He might not be very old, but hes definatly lost some height. Coulda easily been 6'5" peak.
Aaron said on 4/Apr/11
You're right, Derek. I didn't realize; he looked so much older. 6'4" Selleck is 66 too, and looks more spry than this guy. Still surprised Romero is so BIG; Hollywood's usually a dwarftown.
Derek d said on 2/Apr/11
Everyone keeps saying he's so old but he's really not. He was 66 in this picture, only 2 years older than Sly who's still jumping out of planes and doing his own stunts.
Aaron said on 2/Apr/11
How did I never know Romero was this tall? I figured he was De Niro sized... Christ is he big! Legit 6'4.5"++++.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 18/Mar/11
Looks 191-192cm or 6"3.5 max with Rob...with better posture no shorter than 6"4.

He most likely peaked at a solid 6"5 maybe even 197cm
James said on 23/Feb/11
190cm with bad posture

Yeah you could be 7 feet and there is always somebody in the world even taller!! At times I've felt really big at 6'1.5" compared to some people but when I've met blokes built like Martin Johnson (6'7" 18 stone) I've really felt shrimped out...

6ft5 was with shoes.. 6ft4 in reality still fits a 'huge' guy.. i just encounter that 95% peak height with shoes.. To say a guy barely 5ft11 could peak at 6ft
Doug said on 22/Jun/09
Derek if Romero stood up straight he would be virtually a full head taller than Rob. He has a large head too. Looks to me like a clear 8-9 inch height difference so 6 ft 4.5 is bang on.
Anonymous said on 22/Jun/09
There are only 2 inches seperating the top of Rob's head and his eyes. Rob's head comes up to the bottom of his nose. Thats 7 inches.

his looks alot taller than 6ft2 Donald Sutherland. his 6ft5. look above he has a very bad standing posture and a little hunch makes him look 6ft4 beside Rob.

Donald was 6'4" when he was younger. Romero was said to have been 6'6" in his younger years. He's an old man now who could have lost close to 2" from the looks of it.
Hugh 190cm said on 3/Jun/09

I can say that he looks at least as tall as my dad, whos 6'4 3/4in,since my dad has a friend whos also glenns height 173cm.so this guy is truly very tall.Surely over 6'5 at his peak.

Yeah, 6' 5" at an L.A. horror convention. Saw "Night Of The Living Dead" in '69 and couldn't sleep for a week. Awesome in black & white. Color would have made it too bright. He agreed.
Anonymous said on 17/Jan/07
Considering people start to shrink as they get older, i'd say he started @ 6'5.5" & has lost an inch so 6'4.5" is about right IMO.

Viper652 said on 29/Jul/06
I find it funny on this page that Jone says Romero is only 6-3, while he also says Arnold Sharzenegger is 6-4 LOL. This guy would tower over Arnold.
Viper652 said on 27/Jul/06
Is Bruce downplaying his height?
Glenn said on 27/Jul/06
Thank you Trueheight.
trueheight said on 26/Jul/06
I agree, I saw 6'3 for bruce. plus he's a big guy all around. I dunno why even in his book he mentions 6ft(indirectly) b/c I saw him standing for photos and he towered over almost everyone. again he was ALOT bigger than other 6ft+ around him weight-wise
Glenn said on 17/Jul/06
I love this site more than any other in the web world, but this isnt the be all,end all and 100% accuracy on heights.neither is my words.but I believe, even in films,Campbell is at least 6-1,possibly as big as 6-3.and I couldve swore he told me 6-3 in 1989.I could be wrong.
Viper652 said on 16/Jul/06
Campbell might have been wearing lifts when you met him. Hes quoted on this site that hes 6-1 in boots.

Glenn said on 13/May/06

trueheight said on 10/May/06
he is a humoungous guy. I've seen him numerous times over the years at conventions. I've never had a photo taken w/ the man but he was about as tall as my girlfriend at comicon '05 SITTING DOWN LOL. Met Ken Foree(huge as well) as well and he's the coolest guy, even gave us some tickets to the DoD evening screening that we didn't have(in which Romero, Foree and Reineger did a Q&A). He even tolerated my Keenan and Kel questions!
Steve said on 5/May/06
I forgot to add he was slouching so maybe he could be 6'5" if straight. One hell of a nice guy thoe.
Steve said on 4/May/06
Romero is 6'4" I am just under 6'1" and was surprised by how tall he was at the Premier of "Land of the Dead" last year in Edinburgh.
