Arguing about 1cm looks strange. The difference between morning and evening heights of some people may be 2-2.5cm. Also, the method of measuring may give a variance. For example, if someone stands very-very straight and tries be as tall as possible, he would be measured near 1cm taller than if he (she) would stand straight but rather relaxedly. I even don't say about the deviations, which different measuring devices have. So we may say, that Gisele is in 178-181 range dependently of the time of a day and the way of measuring. :)

Ideal height for a supermodel is 5"10. If she would be 5"10,5 the agents will list her at 5"10.. See models like Candice and Adriana... The agents both list them at 5"10, but Adriana is clearly 1 or maybe 2 inches taller when she is standing next to Candice. 5"11 is for most agents the maximum.

UK6 for a 5'4" lady is proportionate. 4-5 inches taller, and it would be a little small. For a 5'11" woman its very tiny. In Brazil, Women 5'11" tall usually wear a UK7.5/8, and we don't have particularly big feet in relation to our height as do Americans.

Tiny shoe size?? I worked in a ladies shop shop and I would say a UK size 6 was one of the most popular sizes along with a size 5. Tiny I would say a size 3 and under. Of course for her height she could be a size 6, my mate is 5ft 10 and has a size 4, she is very narrow and small boned though

But it doesn't seem necessary for her considering she's one of the taller of the models, already. If anything, she may try to underestimate her height as 5'11 is on the upper limits of what is wanted in the modeling industry.

P.M you have made many mistakes in your calculations, if you are rounding to three significant figures, it would be 0.394, meaning the answer could increase by a great deal. Paddy is right 6'0 = 182.88 cm, i should know, i have a height measurer in my bathroom, and i'm 183 cm which is very slightly over 6 feet

There are quite a few up-and-comers who are not that tall, Hannah Holman for one. If a girl is not so tall, but has good proportions, then she can usually pass for taller. That's why a lot of girls that are listed as 5'9-5'9.5 are really about 5'7-5'8. Even girls that are 5'9 are sometimes listed as 5'10-5'11.
As for why the height requirement is pushed, it is true that taller girls have a higher chance. Its more likely that a tall, lanky, semi-pretty, kinda quirky girl will be signed and do runway work than a shorter girl with the same characteristics. The shorter ones that get signed usually have a certain unique quality that throws the height bias out the window. Kate Moss is the classic example of that. Natalia Vodianova isn't that tall either, and neither is Sasha Pivovarova.
The other thing to consider is that VS is a different sort of runway work, because its very commercial. Height doesn't matter as much. Miranda Kerr said a few years ago when she was starting out that she was just under 5'7. She may have grown since then, but probably not by much. Marisa is quite short as well.

I have a question for people that know a lot about the modeling world. okay, why is it that there are a bunch of girls that are not 5'9 that are succesfull models but agenices and tv shows on modeling always seem to make such a big deal about the height factor? is it really a crucial thing, or do agencies just not want to be swampt with shortie wanna be models..?
And i know it helps to be tall if you want to make it as a model, BUT the thing is even if a girl is listed at 5-8/5-9 many times it's a false listing. example marisa miller -almost everyone who has met her says that she is 5'6 tops, and she is a very succesfull model.

I've met two supermodels and both were far below what they claim. Adriana Lima was 5ft 8 - 2 inches less than official. Elle McPherson was 5ft 9 or a little less - 3 inches less than official!!

theheightguru-well said. i agree that because of models there has now been extremism on what is considered attractive. even the straight-non-designer guys who are looking for a girlfriend, if they are shorter then average, then they want a tall girl because again they admire the extra height. something they don't have. to be honest though, it is easy to get consumed by looking at taller women and thinking you need to look like them to have a great body. i think that most guys usually don't even care or notice a girls height. i used to really want to be tall (i am 5'5/5'6ish) and i know now that i should just be comfortable with the height i was meant to be. and also, to the girls who seem to think that only taller girls should be models, i hope you are looking at the other side of of this too. girls that want to be actresses, if they are really tall it is harder for them to get work because a 5'10 women, especially when she is wearing heels, would tower over almost any leading man hence most actresses not being amazons.

Don't you guys find it a bit odd, that most prominent, male fashion designers are shorter- than-average themselves, but won't hesitate to think less of a model who's shorter-than-average? It's possible that their motivation is to find a model whose body type is closest to the dressform that the outfit was sewn on. However, I think it's also possible that a lot of male designers feel inferior for being shorter-than-average, and admire models for having something they don't-a taller stature. I think this, in combination with commerce, and the mistaken belief that beauty equals perfection, has caused us to create a sense of extremism about what's considered 'attractive'.

As a a person who's been following fashion all my life, I agree with Elise. Short people are beautiful & can be models, but not high fashion models. The clothes just look better on tall, thin girls. I think short girls should be able to do runway, just more catelogue stuff, not high fashion.

Kevans...for men, i usually look at tall, handsome men first, but for women, i find average-height beautiful women to be more attractive than tall beautiful women. Avg. height women seem more womanly and feminine to me than tall women. IMO.

I can understand what you mean by "height" requirements and deals being out of proportion, but the fact is that most models have LONG legs which is ideal...
Just about EVERY MAJOR FASHION/CLOTHING line sells pants/jeans... And if you were a designer you wouldn't want a person with "short" legs wearing your jeans would you, especially since the ideal jean length is somewhere around 30-32 i believe...
Personally, i'm 6', i'm 6'1 with boots by the way, and the fact is that agencies HAVE to have tall models
*it's like for instance if you go out or go to the mall or are at school, are you more inclined to notice a TALL beautiful person or an AVERAGE heighted beautiful person??

If she is 5'11" Leo is 6'1" barefoot (which he clearly isn't). Stunning girl I think she looks 5'9.5"-5'10" barefoot compared to Leo (looks more accurate to me) but who am I to downplay this modelling superstar). In 3 inch heels she easily passes the six foot mark , what more could a guy ask for??

I have met Giselle in Paris. I am 5'11 and was wearing slightly higher than average heels. She was wearing very large Dior platform shoes...at least four inches. I was still taller. I would give her maybe 5'9''. She looks so tall and long because she has tiny slight bone structure... this gives her an elongated look in her photos. The narrower you are, the longer/taller you look. The wider your are, the shorter. The Lucky and beautiful girl, but she is not that tall.

A lot of people think you have to be at least 5'7 to be a model. Thats only for runway models and even they prefer the girls to be ideally 5'9-6'0. For commercial modelling or fitness modelling you can be well under 5'7.

That's interesting. Do you do a lot of runway or are you just a still model? I am 5'6" and also and want to model. Is this a legit/recognized agencey your with? Do you lose a lot of jobs being a couple inches shorter then the other girls?

"nod", so we'll write down 5'8" which is what was printed on my composite card. Karolina and Gisele did a height comparison on TRL and KK (who is 5'11'', my friend, who is 5'10'', met her and said she was a little taller). Look at this pic. KK is not even standing up right and still has at least 2 inches on Gisele. When KK was proven to be taller, Gisele gave this "whatever" attitude. She wants to be considered she is so tall to be able to live up to her big name in the industry:

I think it isn't about height/weight. It is about the whole package. Some women look better while carrying more weight some when they are thin and same goes for height. For instance Nelly Furtado and Eva Longoria are superhot short women. Gotta say that I wouldn't mind spending time with Gisele or Charlize Theron either = )

apparently a person's forearm is the same as a person's foot (i've checked)
and ive noticed that guys and girls who are tall,
guys' forearms grow along with their upperarm (so their feet will too) whereas with girls their forarm sorta stops growing and their upper arms keeps growing...

I stood next to ambrosio.. if she is 510 then I am 5'9.5 and that is CERTAINLY not true lol. OK, too the comments down below, in the industry nowadays agencies are more accepting of taller girls, and wouldnt downgrade ur height, unless ur over 6'2, but most of the time they upgrade it. honestly ... i´ve never seen a real hot girl who was clearly over 5´9 in private life ... i mean believing statistics only about 5 percent of the female population is over 5´10 so it´s logical that the possiblity to find an attractive girl in that height range is lower than in a height range below that represents 95 percent of the female population

Karolina is 5'11" and Gisele is 5'10", maybe she was mismeasured. She only looked 5'9.5" at like 15/16. I think she's 5'10" now. In pics with Karolina and Adriana she almost never looks taller than Adriana and more than half the time looks shorter but always looks shorter than Karolina. First of all, from what I know, Gisele was 178cm at 15. When she moved to New York, she was measured at 179 cm by her first agency. That's how tall I think she is. The difference is so minute, I don't see the point in people obsessing over one tiny cm. If you measure a person's height in feet, you're going to get a lot of rounding up and rounding down. Gisele is 179 cm, period. People here seem to think she's either 5'10 or 5'11, and it must be one or the other.
Take it from a person who knows. Never ever, ever judge a person's height by a photo. It doesn't mean anything. ESPECIALLY when people like Gisele have a very distinctive way of posing. Gisele has very narrow hips, so she constantly CONSTANTLY arches her back or juts her hips out to make herself look curvier. That's her trademark. Just look at any picture of her, and she's contorting her body one way or other. And Karolina is not a full inch taller than Gisele! That's complete rubbish! Karolina is taller, but not by an inch.

Ana is 181-182 cm. Her sister is 172 cm and I know people who know their family. Somebody mentioned that even though PAtricia is older, she's almost 10cm shorter.

Well, let me tell you it's one thing to READ about something and an entirely other thing to actually KNOW something. I KNOW. Even male models have their heights fudged. There are some 5'11 guys who are listed at 6'2, and some 6'4 guys listed way way shorter. There's even a girl right now who gets a lot of work who was 5'4 a few years ago... she's 5'8 now and only 17. So growth spurts aren't unusual, even for tall girls. There is some girl who shot up 2 inches in one season. You can only guess how tall she is. You probably disagree with me, but that's probably because you want to be right. And at some level, you are. But it doesn't exactly sound like you know anything about the business aside from the things you've read. Just take it from me... that's how the business works.
And please, save the moral judgements for elsewhere.

But a 5'11 15 year old who can make it in modeling is NOT likely to grow much more if at all. I doubt they give a 2 inch cushion for pete sakes! Many 15 year olds are done growing, particularly the tall ones, and the ones that look "old" enough to make a good model. They're pretty much done. I've read a lot about modeling and I've never heard of any of this EVER. The only thing I've heard is a 6'0 or more will get put at 5'11, since that is within the "ideal" 5'9-5'11. If a true 5'11 girl is young and will grow more, I believe she is listed as 5'11 and that height is kept despite any growth--because as I said, it is so rare to have a great deal of growth. I also forgot to add...
the agncy will round the height down because the girl is likely to grow a bit taller. If she grows too tall, that may scare a client away... and agencies don't really like changing the height stat on the model's comp cards season after season.

To Anonymous who commented on March 8. You're a dumb ass. Let's just say I can actually tell, on a regular basis, how tall a model rally is besides looking at them from pictures. And Kats - Yes that is how the industry works. There are tons of girls who are actually 5'11 but get rounded down. It may not make sense to you, but it does happen. Let's say a girl is 5'11 or taller. Now, 5'9 - 5'11 is the ideal model height, but if that 5'11 girl is 15 years old, the agency will make a decision to round her height down because she is probably likely to grow a couple more inches.

It's funny Star Magazine recently put Gisele at 5'9 when that magazine is known to give celebrities more height. And People Magazine saying the same thing is curious. I'll need to observe more (if I can even come up with anything) but for now I think she is 5'9 1/2--5'10.

I met Leonardo and he seemed not even 6'. I think 178 is pretty accurate...karolina kurkova like I said before was listed at 179cm in some places...I swore I even saw 178 once...
