How tall is Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson's Height

5ft 9.5in (176.5 cm)

American actor best known for roles in films like The Shining, Batman, Easy Rider, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets, The Departed and Anger Management. Carol Kane once said in Screen Stories Magazine: "Jack prefers the actresses with whom he works to be on the short side. I wasn't tall, so I was immediately in. The reason for this is that he is no more than five foot seven or so himself. When he has no other choice but to play opposite a lanky actress, he will wear elevator shoes"

In a 1994 book 'Jack's Life' it mentioned his height, saying: "Jack (five feet nine and a half)."

He's no heavy. I could take him with one hand. He's a balding, middle-aged, midget. Did you know he was only five foot seven?

Yeah, being overweight and hunched over at 5'8" will make you look short, but even with a prime Carl Weathers, Burt didn't look more than maybe 5" shorter face to face and definitely taller than Macchio, who was what? 5'7.5" in '86? De Niro was named as a lift wearer once by the guy who made elevators for Stallone, Burt Reynolds, Michael Douglas, Shatner and others so I see no reason to doubt it. A weak 5'9", maybe 5'8.5" movie star will have at least the occasional use for an extra inch.

Actually, not so much posture, but for body type, Jack sort of became like Burt as he got older and heavier. You see him in his 30's and 40's and never looks shortish to me, yet once he got to middle age and put on a lot of weight, I could see how some would think he was short even though he probably didn't even lose that much until his 70's.
The Shredder said on 22/Nov/17
I agree , I think Burt was a guy that could have been between 5'8 and 5'9 , but just gave a shorter impression do to his shape and postue and De Niro a lift wearer , Explains why they both own Ralph Maccchio.

Jack really didn't look much taller than Burt Young in Chinatown except when Burt slouched. Both standing similarly, the difference didn't look much more than an inch to me. Somewhere from 5'9" to 5'9.5" in his prime and probably about 5'8" today, maybe even a weak 5'8".
KH said on 15/Nov/17
There really isn't a lot of difference betwen 5'9.5 and 5'8 or so and some people are petty thats where the whole short thing with Nicholson started. He looked about average height to me before he got old and lost significant height just like everyone else does. Regardless of height one of my favorite actors.
Bwk said on 4/Nov/17
He's like 80 years old now, he's had to have lost a bit of height by this point. I think you should downgrade him a bit.
Editor Rob: is Jack back in some film, if so yeah I think nearly 2 inches shorter than his peak might be possible...he was out of the limelight for a few years
Rising - 174 cm said on 29/Sep/17
Jtm is right, he is pretty difficult to pin down. Was he taller than 5'8.75" Marlon Brando? The most recent comparison I've seen of Jack is the 2013 Oscars when Jack looked about 5'8" to me. But let me guess, Danimal, you just used the average from that survey you obsess over and subtracted it from what you think Jack's peak height is, right? And max implies Jack might have lost even more than that, which makes it seem to me that you're conflating average and minimum. If your interpretation of that survey were correct then the averages would be much higher.
Spencer said on 27/Sep/17
He looked a weak 5'10" in the 1970's in movies like Cuckoo's Nest and Chinatown.
Jtm said on 23/Sep/17
He is hard to pin down but he was barely taller than shirley maclaine in terms of endearment and they were both barefoot. A lot of posters even doubt maclaine was really 5'7.

Was 5'9.5" and today is MAX 5'7.5" at 80 years old.
Rising - 174 cm said on 19/Sep/17
Yeah, he was at least a 5'9" guy. He's probably 5'8" max NOW at 80 years old, but back in the 70s? No way. Hell, even a 69-70 year old Jack could still oddly pass for 5'9" at times, though I'm sure he was not taller than 5'8.5" by that time. Imo, the question is whether Jack was just a 5'9" guy or whether he was 5'9.5". I've not seen much evidence to suggest a downgrade is in order. And while he did wear boots in The Shining and Cuckoo's Nest with taller leading ladies, I've also seen nothing to suggest they were anything more than normal 3 cm range boots, much less the rumor he had lifts. The 5'7"-5'8" stuff is the typical things you hear for any male superstar of merely average height.

5 ft 7 is ridiculous. Jack looked close to 5 ft 10 in the 70s.

In Hollywood, the cliché is that publicists shave two years off your age and add two inches to your height. So if the p.r. people say that Nicholson is 5'9'', it's likely that he's actually 5'7'' . . . which is exactly the height that Oliver Reed and Carole Kane say he is. I, too, believe he's 5'7'' (5'8'' in shoes) from a careful examination of his movies. Look at him here, next to 5'8'' Shelley Duvall: Click Here He's about an inch shorter. (And notice that she's forced to wear flats. All his leading ladies were.) On this thread, people say, "But he looked taller than her in 'The Shining'." That's an illusion caused by the fact that he's more physically robust. (He has more body mass.) It's why Orson Welles was 6' according to his autopsy, but people routinely thought he was 6'3'' or even 6'4''. His girth made him appear taller than he actually was. Brando was a beneficiary of the same effect. 5'8 1/2'' due to his military records, but he gave the impression of a much taller man . . . especially in his fat period. Check out Brando and Nicholson side by side: Click Here Clearly, Nicholson is about 5'7''. Oliver Reed and Carole Kane weren't exaggerating. They were giving his legit height. Which is clearly traumatic to a lot of people on this thread who are desperate to perpetuate the fake publicist height.
Rising - 174 cm said on 3/Sep/17
Not just Reed. Carol Kane said the exact same thing and in the 1975 article on Robert Redford's height, it said "Well, that’s another article (as is Jack Nicholson who they say is only five-feet-eight)." So the idea Nicholson was only 5'7"-5'8" must have been pretty widespread back then. I'd understand it better if it was Jack from middle age on when he gained weight and gave a shortish impression. But the younger, thinner Jack in his 30s and early 40s didn't give a short impression to me.
James said on 28/Aug/17
I think people assume Nicholson was short because of what Oliver Reed said.

@Richard: I wasn't posting that pic as a comparison between him and Stone, but only to show what boots he wore. As I said, I don't believe they're elevator boots, but I'd say 3 cm would be the minimum they add. They have a pretty decent heel and pretty thick sole.

imdb.com is never reliable for heights. Sometimes they use the actor's official height, sometimes they use Rob's estimates, but other times they just make something up so you never know.

Btw, the fact that most agree Jack was a 5'9"-5'9.5" guy yet many insist he was 5'7" or 5'8" just goes to show how often movie stars people are surprised are only average height get claims of 5'7"-5'8".
RichardSpain said on 1/Aug/17
Rising,

Those boots I think give 3 cm MAX similar than "panama jack boots". If Jack Nicholson was 176 cm in The Shining with boots 179 cm. If Jack was 175 cm with his boots was 178cm. He moved between that "zone"

Also in that scene of The Shining with that camera angle Jack Nicholson seems similar than Philip Stone. They aren't next to they are face to face in that angle so we can't know how shorter was Jack next to Philip.

I don't know really how tall was Philip Stone but I read in website imdb.com he was 5.11 / 180cm . Maybe in The Shining he was less than that for his fifty six years old maybe he was still a strong 180 cm, I don't know.
Rising - 174 cm said on 27/Jul/17
He did wear boots in The Shining as well: Click Here If Carol Kane is right about Jack wearing lifts with taller leading ladies then that'd be a movie to do it considering how tall Shelley Duvall is. But seeing how Jack looked with Shelley Duvall, he'd be shorter than we think if he was wearing lifts so I'd say normal boots. Of course, it also depends on whether Stone actually was 180 cm.

As I said recently, I can't argue with anything from 5'9" to 5'9.5" in Jack's prime, but I think the 5'9.5" may come from somewhere so it's probably the best guess until someone presents compelling evidence to the contrary. Which isn't to say that with more scrutiny we may not find him shorter. I do think there's a good chance Jack was struggling with by the late 90s and if you look at some golf pics in 2002, a 65 year old Jack could look 5'8"-5'8.5" max with Sly Stallone, but mysteriously, 4-5 years later, he starts looking more like 5'9" at some events for The Bucket List and the Departed.
RichardSpain said on 27/Jul/17
I watched "The Shining" last night next to actor Philip Stone (180 cm) Nicholson seems 175 cm/176cm.

Typically, I don't read much into non-full pics, but I do think this is an example of why Jack should be put at no higher than 5'8" flat when he gets a current height: Click Here There are times in that series from the 2013 Oscars where Jack can look a bit taller if we go by Clooney and Affleck's listed height, but those 2 drop height with posture and Clooney, I do think has been below 5'10.5" anyway since turning 50. But if Grant Heslov is 5'9" he had to be at least an inch taller than Jack at that time. 4 years later, a bit more loss is possible, but Jack is tricky. I can buy anything from 5'9"-5'9.5" peak and he probably falls into that weak 5'8" range today, though I wouldn't be surprised if he uses lifts when his next movie comes out. I have no proof of that, but he's seemed like an occasional lift wearer since his 60s and 70s.

Good posture for Jack.
In younger years, until he was 60 years old at least, he appeared a solid 5'10" most of the times, so he couldn't be less than he declared, 177 cm.
He could pass for that until About Schmidt, in recent years. Good genetics,in my opinion.

Jack still looked to be hanging on to about 5'8" with Clooney, Affleck and 5'9" Grant Heslov at the 2013 Oscars: Click Here
But Jack at age 61 did look under 5'9" with Dustin Hoffman in a series of pics. Here's an example: Click Here
Strangely, at events for the Bucket List, I never saw Jack look any more than 5" shorter than 6'2" Morgan Freeman: Click Here

I'll be interested to see how tall Jack looks when his next movie premieres. Just like at 70 years old with Freeman, Jack at age 69 did look a good 5'9" at the Departed premiere with Damon, DiCaprio and Wahlberg, which made me wonder if he's worn lifts over the years. Not sure about his exact peak, but I've never suspected he was under 5'9" back then, but I'd be surprised if he was ever the full 5'10". What did he claim 5'10"? 5'11"?

@ baja74 - Hello mate! I hope you are well!
I too am very fond of Jack Nicholson, as you will have gathered reading my comment on him! Apart from seeing him on the big screen 3 times in a week in 'The Shining', I also saw him cinema-sized in 'The Witches of Eastwick', 'Tommy' (7 times!), and at a special showing of 'Easy Rider' in a Peter Fonda double bill, with a film called 'The Trip'!
That's 14 times I've seen Jack at the cinema! Of course, he plays a wonderful head case in 'The Shining' - the best! He saw and loved the remake and he would have enjoyed taking on the lead in that as well, but he was too old. I have copies of both films; the remake is much truer to the book, but I rate them both, and for comedic value - apart from at the end - you can't beat 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', a true masterpiece, deserving of its awards!
Have a good weekend Beja!

Sandy,
Easily my favorite actor. And yes his role as R.P.M in Cuckoo's Nest was great. I thought he was the best Jack Torrence in The Shining as well. Not that Steven Webber's role in the TV movie was bad. But Jack is the man when it comes to playing crazy. He's definitely old fashioned. I hear he doesn't even own a cell phone.
As for his height, I don't see that he has changed that much. His weight, yes! But not his height. So, a good solid 5'9" sounds good.
Always a pleasure to read your posts!

I just saw a clip "behind the scenes on the shining." It was the scene where Jack's character is about to break down the bathroom door with an axe. I happened to notice one of the stage people walking around and he was nearly as tall as the door. When Jack was near the door he looked to be of average height. Either the stage person was nearly 7' tall or they cut down the door so Jack wouldn't appear so short. Who knows. Regardless, he's a great actor.
RisingForce said on 12/Mar/17
I'm surprised he's doing another film, I thought he was done for good! I know Rob had him at 5'8.5", which was probably right by that point in the 2000s as he was shorter than Sly in golf shoes early mid/2000s but taller than Wahlberg at the Departed premiere. Without seeing a recent comparison I'd imagine he's struggling with 5'8" now at best.

No more than average height for Jack, though his acting is far and away the sort that puts him among my top 10 actors.
It doesn't matter how many times I see 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', I still enjoy it. His character 'R.P. McMurphy' goes into that psychiatric ward and shows 'the boys' how to live a little! They love him; the system does not!
There are actors of enormously varying heights in that film. Thinking about it, I cannot cite another film with such alarming differences, right from 4ft10 Danny DeVito to Will Samson, the giant Indian guy! Jack is about as average as it can get!
In Stanley Kubrick's 'the Shining', in my humble opinion I don't think that working with tall-and-skinny Shelley Duvall makes him come over as any shorter! She looks tall, probably taller than she is! Jack seems about 5ft9.75, dangerously unhinged and very strong! I saw the film three times the week it came out! The usherette said "you like this film?"
I thought Jack was rather suave in Tommy, though of average height! I have other films of his, including 'Easy Rider', but I have not made any serious comparisons yet.
I will go with 5ft9. I think he has been taller in his prime and he'll be a bit shorter now.

I have to tell ya rob, you always list them taller than they really are. I mean, not by much, you do tend to give them the benefit of the doubt when there is room to doubt, or maybe you're just measuring their height by addition of the typical shoe increase.. In Jack Nicholson's case, I would say in his younger years his evening height would be around 5'8.5 to 5'9, you can tell this if you watched Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, and Chinatown. His footwear varies between 0.5 to 1.5 inches and even sometimes 2 inches (think Carnal Knowledge and Five Easy Pieces he wears those cowboy heels). Anyway, very cool guy, definitely a prominent male figure and no doubt a chick magnet but if we account for his average shoe height I would agree with your listing. WIth a guy like Jack Nicholson, he's gonna want to make the kind of movies that move people - the kind that's about emotion and, well, people. All of the movies in theaters nowadays are mostly action scenes layered on top of hammy dialogue, wooden characters, and overuse of CGI. That's not the kind of movies Jack wants to do and I don't blame him.

I always thought Jack looked relatively tall in The Shining because he doesn't stand next to too many people and most that he does are not tall. He can seem to have a lanky build while walking around talking crazy to himself. However, just watched Room 237 about The Shining and as he's getting hyped up for the "Here's Johnny!" scene, a truly tall guy stands near him and absolutely towers him. Genuinely could have been a flat 5'9" at peak anyway.
greg said on 31/Aug/15
Don't think he was much above about 5'8" when younger, which was probably still in the average height range for someone of his generation. Same heights as Hopper.

I can only see 5'9.5 being his morning height tbh, looks to me a flat 5'9, no more.
Sam said on 3/Apr/15
In The Last Tycoon, Nicholson and Robert De Niro looked pretty similar height, in some shots one or the other could seem to have the edge but I doubt a big difference in height between them.

@CDS Problem is nobody knows how tall Tom Cruise is. Tom Cruise is the last person anyone should use to compare height. Jack is also 25 years older. He's probably lost an inch.

He looks pretty heavy at times in older age, I'd bet he'd weigh a bit over 200 pounds or near it, which is a lot on a sub-5'9" frame.

I've read he's seduced almost as many women as his buddy, Warren Beatty, and unlike Beatty has in the last several years been openly chasing girls around.
Nick said on 8/Dec/14
@JB It's due to his bad posture, believe me. It's something I've always noticed in his movies as he tends to slouch quite a bit. Perhaps he suffered from some sort of back problems in his youth.

Could we beef up his listings? I'm thinking Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, Terms of Endearment, Batman, As Good As It Gets and The Departed.

There's just too many greats in his filmography to list a minor film like Anger Management (which I enjoyed) IMO but that's leaving out The King of Marvin Gardens, The Passenger, Reds...need I go on!

He has been a bit overweight in the last 15 years but nothing on the scale of Brando and Orson Welles, both of whose obese conditions undoubtedly contributed to them dying in their early 70s...like Brando and Beatty he was a womanizer and more of a drug user than Beatty but at 77, Nicholson seems likely to outlive Brando.

Anyway, just havin a little fun, sorry if I inconvenienced you, and it won't happen again.(and thnx for takin it lightly, since he didn't)
lorne said on 29/Aug/11
( I know this is a long post, but bear with me, that inlcudes you Rob :) )
Another thing to the 5'7 claims, I am a legit 5ft9.Granted, I drop to 8ft8.75in in the evenings, but I am a weak 5'9 nonetheless.Yet I have been referred to as 5'7. For example, my ex would talk **** about me, and refer to me as a "skinny 5'7 prick" though very much not true.A 5ft6.25in friend of mine also recently swore I wasn't 5'9 at any point in the day.I explained, he wears either timberlands or these thick Nike's, I wear converse, and he has great military posture, I have a constant slouch, but he didn't believe me.So I decided to prove my height by having us take multiple measurements(as suggested by our friends). We did a few measurements over a weekend(afternoon and evenings) and lo and behold, I measured 5ft8.5-5ft9.5, and he measured 5ft6-5ft7. My friend is in the Navy, and had previously been measured they're as 5ft6.25in, so he knew the measurements we're accurate.Ultimately, I was a little under 5'9 by the evening, and around 5'9.25 in our afternoon measurement, while he measured from a little over 5'6, to just under 5'7.Point is, this guy said before our measurements that I was, and I quote,"5ft7.75, MAX DUDE". Despite a few people saying I look 5'7-5'8, most people think I am 5ft10, and recently, an acquaintance who is 5ft11, 5'11.25in AT THE MOST who claims 6'1 swore I was "5'11, or damn close".My point is, people suck at guessing height, either because they aren't interested in it like we are, or because so many people exaggerate about it.So some people swear I'm 5'7, some honestly think I am 5'10.But it doesn't change the fact that I am 5ft9.Just like some people have said Nicholson was 5'7, even though he was usually listed as 5'10/5'11, doesn't change the fact that he is around 5ft9.That's the same height that I am, which is why I am stressing this point. You see, the 174-176cm height range is a tricky one, becuase you are a "weak average", meaning you are average height, but on the lower end. Thus, you can look short to some people, why others honestly think your a strong average.Just something to think about...
[Editor Rob: lorne, can you stick to using that name and not legends etc]
lorne said on 29/Aug/11
[Editor Rob: whether 5ft 9.5 or 10, you could argue anywhere in the 5ft 9-10 range.]

Exactly. I'll grant the downgraders that 5ft8.75in was possible, but nothing less.I say 175-176cm peak, 174cm absolute minimum, 177 cm, absolute max.He looked a weak average, and he was.5'7 claims are ridicilous, remember, people suck at guessing height.

I think 5.9.5 is correct. He was a couple inches taller than shelly duvall in the shining. He was definately wearing lifts in the movie, but Duvall was also on 3 inch heels, so it balances it out. If Duvall is 5.8, then he is 5.8 then he has to be from 5.9.5 to 5.10 in 1980.

looks 5'9.5 with shoes next to 5'9 glenn (both with shoes)

barefooted = 5'8.5 JACK , 5'8 GLENN

this is correct, so the site height is right. ;)

Could anyone tell me what you should class your height as, is it the measurement when you get up, midday or last thing at night? Also how much does a man of average height shrink during the day and how much would a 7ft 6 man shrink?
glenn said on 4/Apr/07
in the postman always rings twice,he looked the shortest i thought.
Anthony said on 3/Apr/07
Jack also looked shorter than 5'8.5 Sutherand in "A Few Good Men".
Anthony said on 26/Feb/07
Jack looked a lot shorter than 5'6 Diane Keaton last night, though I'm sure Diane had heels.
MikeW said on 24/Feb/07
I would evisit the 5'-7" height. Look at him in Goin' South with Nary Steenburgen (listed as 5'-8"). Assume he is wearing cowboy boots and they are still the same height.
When they are seated together on the wagon he is clearly shorter. Women usually have shorter upper bodies, longer legs. I saw the movie and was surprised at how short he appeared. Click Here

I think Jack Nicholson in his prime stood 5'9.5 (1.77m) in his prime. I would agree that he started loosing height in the 1970s and by the time Batman(1989) came out, he stood around 5'9 (1.75m). I would also agree that Nicholson these days stands 5'8.5 (1.74m).
Glenn said on 14/Jan/07
He did look 5-10 to me in the early 90s.in the flesh.lifts?
G-MANN said on 13/Jan/07
Maybe 5'9.5" is a little generous. In his prime he must have been 5'9", but he's getting old. A lot interviewer desribe him as being rather stocky and shorter than you'd imagine, but then he has huge screen presence.
Brad said on 8/Dec/06
Go to the photo of Jack with Hoffman Frank2 put up. 3" taller than a man who is quite short.
chitown said on 6/Dec/06
I was an extra on the set of hoffa, and was next to him a bunch of times. I am 5' 9". He was shorter by 3/4" to 1" inch. Now devito...he was really really short to the point I could not even estimate.
sleuth said on 4/Dec/06
gave up more than 2" to 5'10" Cuba Gooding in "As Good As It Gets"
Glenn said on 17/Nov/06
True David.but he did appear 5-9 that night and 5-10 in the early 90s.possibly all in lifts.
David said on 17/Nov/06
Don't let anyone be fooled by this foto of Jack and Glenn.
Thing is that Jack has way more experience and is smarter than most of you (no disrespect). Look at the pic very closely and you can tell that he stands a little in front of Glenn and uses the arm-shoulder thrick so Glenn looks about an inch shorter, also you cannot trust his footwear all the time, smart guy Jack tends to mislead people about his height!
Glenn said on 16/Nov/06
He is great.but doesnt always pose.
Glenn said on 10/Nov/06
Wow.Im shocked about Boggie.
sam said on 9/Nov/06
In a Bogart biography, an army physical gave him a barefoot height of 5'8.5" in his early 20s. His co-stars in Casablanca, though, were Ingrid Bergman, at almost 5'10" (not counting her heels), as well as Paul Henreid and Conrad Veidt, both of whom were 6'3". I think Bogart's lifts made him around 6'4"!
dmeyer said on 8/Nov/06
does look 1 inch taller than glenn so 5'9
Glenn said on 8/Nov/06
I always heard Bogart was 5-6,yet Rob I think said 5-8.
Anthony said on 8/Nov/06
I never understood why so many actors think it's absolutely necessary to look tall onscreen, when in reality most of the all time greatest actors are on the short side. In addition to Jack and Bogie, Pacino, De Niro, Cagney, Jack Lemmon, Kirk Douglas, James Dean, etc. were all on the short side.
sam said on 8/Nov/06
It's awesome that Jack is cool with taller co-stars, I think it's kind of silly for stars to be overly sensitive about looking short (although I understand why they don't). For some reason, it cracks me up that Bogart wore gigantic lifts and sat on phone books while shooting Casablanca.
Glenn said on 8/Nov/06
I agree.great find.

Quotes from Nicholson biographies seem to agree with the 5'9" and a bit:

Shepherd, pages 93-94:
"Jack had signed to do a $2 million comedy drama for Paramount Pictures, The Last Detail...Unlike some of the male stars before him who refused to work with anyone taller than they were, Jack had no second thoughts about working between six-foot-two Otis Young and six-foot-four Randy Quaid. In fact, Jack's such a commanding presence as Billy "Bad A--" Buddusky that no one really notices or cares about the differences in their heights."

McGilligan, pages 242-245:
"A tall, goony-looking young actor named Randy Quaid captivated them. However, no final decision could be made unless Quaid proved compatible with Nicholson. ... Just as Quaid was leaving, Jack jumped up to shake his hand. Ashby had warned Nicholson' that Quaid was very tall (six feet four), but now, for the first time, Jack (five feet nine and a half) realized just how tall."

It sounds like Nicholson doesn't mind working with taller actors. But it's understandable that any leading actor would be reluctant to be paired with an actress who's taller than he is. (Or even almost as tall.)

According to height charts, 5'10" is average for men, and 5'4" is average for women. That's a six-inch difference between the sexes; but there seem to be a lot of short actors and tall actresses in Hollywood, for some reason. Maybe the directors should start looking to cast taller actors and shorter actresses.

Anthony you have super taste. The departed. Film of the year by far. Yeah and he did look 5"9 in it.
Anthony said on 7/Oct/06
Keaton is 5'10. Jack looked 5'8-5'9 next to Keaton when he was in the Bat-suit.

In "The Departed", which I just got back from seeing, Jack looks 5'9 throughout. As a side note, I urge everyone here to see "The Departed". It's incredible.
Glenn said on 6/Oct/06
Look at Keaton and I.and Im wearing boots and him in casuals.
Lmeister said on 6/Oct/06
Jack Nicholson he is a mystery. 1) he is at least 2 inches shorter than Adam (5'10'')Sandler in Anger Management 2) taller than Michael(5'9'')Keaton in Batman 3)Looks shortish in movies from the 60-70s. Maybe he lost some height, but I do believe Jack was never taller than 5'8.5'' which was he publicized height 20 years ago.
Glenn said on 4/Oct/06
Watched The PostmanAlways Rings Twice for the first time since the WHTcable days.I was surprised to see Jack no taller than 5-8.even smaller at times.
Brad said on 2/Oct/06
He wasn't that much taller than Davy Jones in production scenes of The Monkees' "Head" motion picture in early '68. I'd say 5' 7.5"
Glenn said on 2/Oct/06
5-9 now.5-10 peak.
Clinton said on 1/Oct/06
I think there's a general misconception of the height of stars. Actors and actresses alike seem to be on the small side, and they all lie about their height. I'm an actor, i've been around many stars and it just seems that they're all usually smaller than you'd think from seeing them on film. I'm 5'8", I'm not insecure about my height so I don't lie about it. I've met Jack and I'd say he's about 5'6"-5'7". Hopefully he doesn't read this or he'll give me shit next time I work with him.

Is Kim the one in the middle of the picture ? Or the one that looks like Robert Urich ? ;-)
Glenn said on 17/Aug/06
Thank you Danimal.classic Frank for you.and his answer would be that Im 5-6.
Glenn said on 17/Aug/06
No arguments here Marco.thank you.
MHouillon said on 16/Aug/06
Dear Frank2. I don't think Jack is 178cm. I just watched "About Schmidt" and 174cm is just right.
Studying art doesn't mean to judge a height correctly. The pic you are refering to is one of the best examples for a bad, a very bad height-judging picture. Are you really serious ? It is totally sloping! Forgot your glasses ?
1.) Andy is a little nearer to the camera than Jack = A matter of perspective, art-student!
2.) 175cm/176cm Garcia is using a trick that many not so tall actors use to appear taller: He lays his arm above the shoulder of Jack (pushing him a LITTLE down).

You should come up with a picture with the accuracy of Glenn's pics (which are almost always a direct straight shot)

Best wishes, Marco
Danimal said on 15/Aug/06
Frank, if Jack is only 5'8" today, then how do you explain him looking at least an inch and a half taller than Glenn in that above pic? I say he's 5'9" today, not less that that.
Glenn said on 14/Aug/06
What I mean Frank,is you could be right.Jack is fishy.Colin and Sly your not right on.this one is yours.
Frank2 said on 14/Aug/06
Huh? First you say in his youth he was near, or was 5-10, maybe always 5-9. Then you contradict yourself by saying: I agree he could be 5-7,5-8 barefoot.

Which is it?

I stood by him. He even offered me a nice Havana to smoke. We were both kicked out of the lobby of the Pasadena Civic during the Emmys since they didn't allow smoking inside. Jack's definitely at least three inches shorter than me. No question in my mind.
Glenn said on 14/Aug/06
Jack in his youth was near or was 5-10.now or maybe always was 5-9.never saw him at 5-8,but this despite your idiotic comments and estimations,Im not going to argue with.I agree he could be 5-7,5-8 barefoot.but I think,as does Rob,the real truth is 5-9.however,you might be right about this one,you still look like your shrinking people.including me.
Frank2 said on 14/Aug/06
Explain why the photo of Garcia and Jack doesn't prove anything. I studied art. I understand perspective. Obviously you don't. The ground is not slopping where Jack is next to Garcia. There's a whole series of shots taken. In every single one, Jack is shorter. If you think Nicholson is 5'10" you're living in a dream world. The same dream world that Glenn seems to exist in. Nicholson is today no more than 5'8". I've stood right next to the man several times. When he was younger he was no more than an inch taller.
