He isn't any less than 5'8.5" and 5'9" is a good shout. Just annoys me when people say " I am just xxx" and its complete and utter nonsense. A true 5'11" barefoot can look pretty tall at times and especially in a country with a 5'9.5" average like the USA.

he is 5'7. I shave seen him several times and he wears very suspect footwear. once he was wearing cowboy hoots with 2+ inch heals on them and my gf at the time who is 5'9 was wearing sandals and they were the same height only his wild blow combed hair was a few inches over her head. this wa sin Hollywood..later I was a t a table next too thin in New York and he was wearing a suit with clunky shoes and was at best 5'8.5 minus the 1.5 inch heels

Well, LupeLuna, I care how tall or short people are, which is why I come to this site. In fact I tend to think it slightly immoral when a man lies about his height, especially since the lie is so easily exposed.
Anyway, name a movie where Depp played a character who should have been tall. I can't think of any myself (unless John Dillinger was tall), so it's not as if he's trying to put one over on his fans. And, if you want to tell people that you're big, don't call yourself "Johnny." That wouldn't have worked for Johnny Wayne.

@tree: I've seen some memorable battle of the lifts/big heels before. Often times Robert Downey Jr. is involved one way or the other. Cruise always wears lifts these days, but I think Depp is a bit more of a thick shoe/boot guy rather than internal lifts. He's probably worn them for some film roles, though.

I'd guess he gets somewhere around 5.5 to 6 cm actual height. He’s such a nice guy, he talked to each fan for at least a few minutes. When he was talking to me, I noticed we were almost the exact same height. I consider myself usually 5’9” on the dot, but have measured 5’9.25” in the morning and 5’8.75” at night before. He was maybe half an inch to an inch taller than me tops. He was in dress shoes with an estimated 1 inch heel and I was in flat boots with a half an inch heel. The premiere was in the evening. I’d say he’s also 5’9” on the dot but could measure over or under depending on the time of day.

He does look anywhere from 5'9"-5'9.5" in those 2 photos if Benedict is 5'11.5", but he definitely looks to have thicker shoes as they appear to have a platform like the shoes he's wearing in the photo to the right at the top of the page. But 181 cm does sound possible for Benedict as well since Rob has seen him looking around 5'11" so that would make Depp 176 cm max even with the footwear advantage. I doubt Depp has lost height too. In the first Pirates of the Caribbean, he's as tall as Orlando Bloom, but he was probably wearing big boots to appear that tall. From his proportions though, he didn't strike me as being particularly tall. I thought perhaps he'd be 5'8-5'9 in stature.

Donnie Brasco is my favorite, but then Al Pacino is the greatest actor to me and is the outstanding performance of the film, imo, but Depp is great as well with a more subtle performance and less eccentric character than many of his others. Blow was very good as well and Edward Scissorhands is a classic. While it's certainly one of Depp's least challenging roles and not among his best performances, if we're speaking more of the film than his acting, Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the true classics of its genre so he can at least stake claim to a big role in another great film. The most recent Depp film I've seen was The Tourist, which from what I hear is more indicative of where his career has gone as opposed to a pretty stellar career prior. Other than that, the only other of the films he starred in during the last decade I've seen was Public Enemies, which I saw once in theaters. That was certainly much better than The Tourist. I only saw the first Pirates film and I enjoyed Sleepy Hollow, but in general, I'd say he had a solid first 20-25 years with the occasional turkey.
As for height, 5'8.75" is more the higher end I'd guess him at. I was trying to get his glasses, the MOSCOT Lemtosh, he wears 44mm, but I think his head is significantly smaller than mine (I have a 22 & 1/2 inch head which is right between MEDIUM and LARGE for hat sizes). Seems like he has a small head/hat size with even smaller facial features, so 44mm glasses like his might look too tiny on my bigger head/facial features.

Leo looked a strong 5'10 in "what's eating Gilbert grape" tbh, and yes I'm sure Depp MIGHT have worn elevating shoes in "public enemies". yes, he may of, to match up to 5'11.5-6'0 Christian bale. And in Gilbert grape he did look 5'9.5 but it MAY have been lifts.

Public Enemies was partially filmed in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, which is a commutable distance from my home. The casting director put out a call for local police officers/sheriff's deputies to be extras in the movie. One requirement was the officers/deputies had to be under 5'10". This eliminated at least half of the potential extras because this region of Wisconsin has a large population of people of German, Dutch, and other northern European ethnicity.

Not that it bothers me! I think he's great! I prefer him in his more sensible roles. My favourites are 'Donnie Brasco', 'the Ninth Gate', 'Dead Man', 'Sleepy Hollow' and 'Sweeney Todd', but I have at least 16 of them to choose from!

for what its worth I stood by his replica at the madame trudeaux wax museum in SF, I'm about 68.5 inches and we were about the same height (though hard to factor footwear, he had boots and I had thick healed running shoes)...the way he looks in his suits (pictured above) which I am assuming are Regular in size confirms my estimation (unaltered R suit sleeve lengths are borderline too long for me as they seem to be for him)

Then one day I felt short, an older gentlemen was like I'm 5'11" then he stood next to me and he was like your 6'0" and we looked in the mirrior my eyes where over his eyebrows. I have an friend who claims he is 6'0" funny thing is when we where 16 he claimed 5'11" then without getting measured he was like I grew now I think I'm 6'0" now. He is my height and is built like me were both 5'9" I don't think he knows his height. Though who knows at an urgent care center I've been measured at 5'10" 1/2 and I know that's not my height bc I ve been measured at 5'8" 1/2 at the military entrance processing and on an school day when I was younger where I didn't do much I get measured at the doctors at 5'9" 1/2 and on an day I do a lot I get measured at 5'9" when I was in the navy for only four weeks I have hypertension. I was on an airplane for seven hours, when we landed I did laid in an recliner for an few hours at an ymca place, I woke up and two hours later we sat criss cross apple sauce for an hour or more then we get on an bus that's like maybe 15 too 30 minutes then we walked for in awhile this is evening at 7 o clock I get clocked in at 5'9" they where like 69. And I check my height a lot and help from others I'm measured between 5'9" and 5'10" all the time the lowest being 5'8" 7/8ths and the highest being about 5'10" and I had an stadiometer like robs and I was measured either at 5'9 1/4 or just bout 5'9" depending on the day.

If a person says "only" and "5ft11" it is most likely that said person is embellishing their height by at least 2 inches.

Editor Rob your wall/floor might be off by several mm if you got that much difference. If the place you put the stadiometer on looked flat and you faced it (so the rod didn't bend) then go with stadiometer (but take 1/8th inch off that).

Editor Rob to be fair, being a top a-lister brings a level of security and trickery that we don't need to bother with.
A guy like Cruise for instance on some sets would have 2 other doubles...so you have these 3 cars come to set, then after shooting the 3 cars with cruise in one and 2 doubles in other going away. Crazy, but then, maybe for some they feel it necessary.

I'd just go with 5ft 9 if you only drop a little under. If you dropped to 5ft 8.5 or 8.25 and claimed 5ft 9 then a proportion of people who were quite honest themselves might realise you weren't 5ft 9.
As for Depp, at times you could argue he fell into a weak or strong 5ft 9.

Editor Rob with Wax figures we need to be aware that sometimes an actor who appears and gets dimensions taken, might have a pose he stands in and that is the height of the figure. In some cases I would say the pose was less than a 'military tall' type pose. Depp at 174cm can be arguable at times, but he also can look 5ft 9 range a lot.

Tom Cruise is wearing obvious elevator boots in the photo above. No boot can be that thick without a hidden lift or padding inside. Cruise looks 5'9" (same as Depp) with those boots, but only 5'7.5" without them.
