Wars is correct. Shaq has unnaturally thick basketball shoes. He's a huge man, but 611.5" barefoot is right on target. All his fans want to make him some sort of superhero. I believe Wilt Chamberlain had at least an inch on Oneal, maybe more. Also he was about the same height as Big Show, who seems to have lost lots of height. Oneal was measured his last year at LSU as 6'11.5". I just don't beleive he grew any after that.

Shaq is 7'1", for every picture that you can find of him looking 6'11" (and yes, I admit they DO exist) there are 3 more where he looks 7'1" - 7'2". He's 7'1", 7'0.5" BARE minimum, although he's not as tall as 7'2" barefoot.

Shaq is now 7'2". When he came into the NBA, he was 7' 1" or so, but he's grown about an inch. The Big Show is right around 7 and the Great Khali is 7'2". I wish the NBA would change Shaq's height to 7' 2". He and Metumbo are exactly the same height.

If you look at the video of Shaq and 7'4" Brenden Adams, you will notice that there is no comparison at all in their heights. Shaq may be 7' tall. And that a BIG maybe!!!!!!

Wrong Clay. Again, did you bother to read the disclaimer from the very source? If you had, you would have long noted that:
"measurements prior to 2000 are based on newspaper articles rather than official league documents. While the measurements reported in such articles are reported to be officially from the predraft camp, we are taking those writers at their word and can not completely verify that information."

Most ppl insist that the height Shaq is listed in is his height with shoes on bc most NBA players in the modern are listed that way. But Shaq's height, as most of us on this board already know, is listed barefoot. So with shoes on I suppose he's nearly 7,3" especially considering how big they are!

I remember when asked about his height Shaq stated "6'11 1/2". That was in his early NBA days. I don't think he grew 1.5" later, but you never know. When he stood next to 7'1" Wilt Chamberlain, Shaq appeared a little shorter maybe 7'0".

Regarding Shaq's NBA career, yes he has been dissapointing in some ways. He is though as you say one of the all time greats. I think the times when Shaq dissapointed me was the 2002-2003 season. The Lakers had won 3 in a row and Shaq had a minor toe injury that could have been healed with surgery easily before training camp. However Shaq opted to wait to have the srugery with the logic "I was hurt on company time, so I'll heal on company time". They lost that series to San Antonio in 6 games and homecourt advantage would have helped a lot(which Shaq may have cost them because of the toe injury). The Lakers were 4-11 without Shaq that season so Shaq's selfishness no doubt hurt them in the standards. Even with that if Horry's shot doesn't rim out in game 5 they probably would have won the series. I still believe that if not for Shaq's selfish approach that season that the Lakers would have won atleast 4 in a row, maybe even more.
Another thing is how well he's played in Phoenix this year. It makes you wonder how hard he was trying those last 2 years before this one. Shaq and Wade playing together at the level each are playing this year in the East would be a championship contender. Plus if he kept his weight down in the middle of this decade he may have not had those toe problems.
So despite being hands down a top 10 player of all time, I agree that with the work ethic of Russell or Jordan he would have been the best ever. His combination of size, athleticism, footwork and passing ability couldn't be stopped. It can be argued that his peak(2000) was as good as anyone's and you could see by how he started his career(first 3 seasons) and his peak(the Lakers 3peat) that he could have been even better.

SayHeyKid has very convincing arguments. I think he has understood the psychological effect of height way better than anyone else here. This allows him to stay objective in his assertion. I also believe he is 6 ft 11 7/8. It might destroy some fan's world, but I assure you that Shaq still sleeps well, even if he's below the 7ft1 mark

The context in which the statement was made was one of an admission, that, contrary to popular belief, he was not quite, though ever so close, to being 7 feet barefoot. Of course he looks 7'1" many times . . people, we are talking about a 1 inch difference, which is erased right off the bat with any type of shoes, much less high top basketball shoes. The man is 7'1", but with shoes on. We are admittedly not talking about a guy (e.g., Stallone) who claims several more inches than what he is. Shaq's listing is in line with most NBA listings, in fact probably even understated. Many people are listed 2 plus inches taller than their actual, barefoot heights. Finally, a correction is in order: the draft express site, which states w/shoes and w/shoes measurements, wherein Shaq is stated to be 7'1" without shoes, is misleading because the pre-draft measurements prior to 2000 are based on newspaper articles and other sources and are not based on actual measurements or otherwise subject to verification. People, I am not one of these people determined to downgrade people, much less people that I really like (like Shaq). I understand from perusing this site that there are others who are so inclined, but I'm not one of them. So, I don't need to get "over it."

Glenn actually haven't shown himself getting measured like Rob has but he does look the height he claims. He wakes up at 5'8 so he's really nothing under 5'7 1/2 in his photos unless they're taken after being up for many hours during the day.

Also, I remember reading an article about a giant indian grappler who killed a guy in the ring; they said this guy was A HAIR OVER 7-FEET, and weighed 380lbs.
