I have The Black Rose DVR’d. I just watched it. Power is exactly the same height as Jack Hawkins. No two inch difference. Power doesn’t appear to be wearing lifts. I believe he was a solid 5’11’’.

Rob how tall do you reckon his father Tyrone Power Sr was? He died when Tyrone was 17 and in the one pic I saw he looked noticeably taller than his son.
Editor Rob
Likely over 6ft.
Colin Dowson said on 22/Apr/19
Power is clearly 2 inches shorter than the 5ft 11 jack Hawkins in "The black Rose"..so he was n taller than 5ft 9
Beth said on 3/Jan/19
I just watched What’s my Line and they specifically discussed his height...that he measured in just under 6 ft. That would be around 5’11” .
James said on 25/Aug/17
Power was obviously wearing lifts in other films.
Tom said on 23/Aug/17
Power wore huge lifts in The Long Gray Line. No six footer or even someone an inch under six feet would wear lifts like that unless they were no more than 5'10'' which I believe he was.

Tom said on 3/Aug/17
Power didn't wear lifts in the film. Flynn was definitely 6'1''.
James said on 23/Jul/17
Power either wore lifts in the film, or Flynn wasn't even 6'1". Either way they were both far too old for their characters.
Tom said on 19/Jul/17
If Power was just 5-10 then why was he nearly as tall as Errol Flynn in The Sun Also Rises?

Watch the movie. Flynn is at best an inch and a half taller. Flynn was supposedly 6-2 although in reality I believe he was closer to 6-1.
Colin Dowson said on 29/Jun/17
If Tyrone was 5ft 11,why are some women taller than him in his Films,he was no more than 5ft 9
James said on 12/Jun/17
I think he was 5'10". He was much better than Errol Flynn, "The Black Swan" is better than any of Flynn's films.

Rob, is 5ft10½ possible?

Seems reasonable if he was called both 5ft10 and 5ft11 in his career
Editor Rob: he certainly at times could seem it...
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jan/17
Seeing him with Randolph Scott in Jesse James, 5 ft 11 is fair. Scott could look a little less than 4 inches taller actually.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Dec/16
@Rob, mmm, in Blood Sand he made John Carradine look 6 ft 1. There was around 2 inches between them. Perhaps there's a chance of 5'10.5.
Arch Stanton said on 15/Oct/16
Can seem more 5'10 but if you really look at him with 5'7.5 Maureen O'Hara very close to 5'11
Tom said on 27/May/16
Studying his films Inbelieve he was in the 5-10 to 5-10.5 range. He hardly ever wore lifts. So with shoes he could have been half an inch under six feet.
Damien said on 22/May/16
Lots of guys claim the height they are with shoes (one inch heel) on. Technically a naturally 5'11" person is 6' with shoes on. From his films, though, it is fairly obvious that Ty was in the ballpark of 5'11". Since everyone shrinks daily because of gravity, he was probably 5'10.5" at the end of the day, hence Patricia Neal's comment, it makes no sense to tack on a half inch height unless it's accurate. That could also explain the 5'11.5" on his 1950s passport, it was probably a night height measurement in shoes.
James said on 26/Mar/16
Power lied about his height when he claimed to be six foot.

A photo with Romero and Payne there Click Here Odd, no way was Payne near 6 ft 3, see him with Reagan!
Arch Stanton said on 23/Nov/15
@ Steve, yes towards the end of the film Martin and Sinatra walk into a room and they're briefly stood near Romero. He looked easily 6'3 with them.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Nov/15
Tyrone's slippers are a bit thicker than O'Hara's though.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Nov/15
@Rob/Steve Click Here click download link in brown and look at 1 hr 51, 40 secs. Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone in slippers, a great comparison. He can look 4 inches taller there. And she was at 5 ft 8 until recently. Doesn't look under 5 ft 11 there. For some reason I always think of him as 5 ft 10.

Re: Cesar Romero. Worrying thing is that I saw Springtime in the Rockies the other day and Romero actually looked about the same height as John Payne. Which is odd because Payne was a good inch shorter than Randolph Scott.
Editor Rob: Tyrone could vary at times, but with footwear like that he could look 5ft 11

Power was 5'10" and Flynn was 6'1".
Steve Hayes "The Saint" said on 19/Jun/15
I knew Ty Power very well when I was under contract to 20th Fox in the mid-fifties. Ty was 5' 10. Caesar Romero was a legitimate 6' 3". I was a house guest at Errol Flynn's Mulholland House in 1950. I'm 6' 2". I'd say Flynn was a fraction taller than that. Steve hayes
Steve said on 1/May/15
Yes, Caesar was in the original (and superior) Ocean's 11. And he was great in it. But to my inowledge he was never in any shot where he stood next to Sinatra or Dean Martin. He did tower over Peter Lawford who I believe was 5'11". But Romero was dwarfed by 6'5" Robert Foulk.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Apr/15
In fairness like Dean Martin, Power could look tallish range back then, but as you say even 5'10 back then was tallish, tall actually for Power's generation.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Apr/15
@Steve Cesar Romero was in Ocean's 11 wasn't he? He towered Martin and Sinatra didn't he, that was a legit 6'3 guy minimum.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Apr/15
Rob can you replace one of them with The Razor's Edge? I'd say that actually should go near the top. I always thought he looked a classic 5 ft 10, can't see 5 ft 11 either Steve.
Steve said on 11/Apr/15
I doubt Power was any taller than 5'10". But 5'10" was on the tall side compared to many actors of his generation.

He was a lot shorter than his close pal Caesar Romero. Like 5 inches shorter.

People don't necessarily lose an inch by age 56.

I'm a lot older and still hit five eleven.

Marshall had a wooden leg. So if he lost height, he would have needed to have his prosthetic leg shortened.

Which "Tyrone Power"...Tyrone Power the 3rd(Matinee Idol) or his son, Tyrone Power the 4th? If it's Tyrone Power the 3rd, he was--according to the book,"The Secret Life of Tyrone Power" about 5'10". In fact, one of the men who would set up scaffolding before filming, according to actors heights, said "Tyrone Power was closer to 5'9"...with shoes they rounded up his height.

I just watched UNTAMED and noticed that Power was the same height as 6' Richard Egan and also the same height as 6' Brad Dexter.

In THE BLACK ROSE, Power was the same height as Jack Hawkens who was at minimum 5'11" and could have been 6'.
Frank2 said on 30/Jun/09
In RAWHIDE, Power was the exact same height as Hugh Marlowe and Marlowe was at the very minimum, 6' tall.
Frank2 said on 28/Jun/09
When he became a US Marine, he was measured and weighed. Records state he stood 6' and weighed 165 lbs. I believe he was closer to 5'11". He was always an inch taller than both 5'10" Dana Andrews and 5'10" Don Ameche. I never spotted him wearing lifts in any film he made. He appeared to be two inches shorter than Basil Rathbone in THE MARK OF ZORRO. But then he was almost the same height as 6'1" Ward Bond in THE LONG GRAY LINE. And that was when both men were in a boxing ring wearing flat shoes. Now Bond was older and could have lost an inch in height.

I noticed that a person named "Maria" says she talked with Mike reagrding Power's height. Is there a way that my email address could be given to her so she could let me know where I could reach Mike? I always saw him at minimum5'11 and, why not, 6'? Damien, i am sure you are honest in your inquire and i wish i'd be able to answer you; He was very slender even in his later days so, if not that tall, needed to be a bit upgraded rather than the contrary, no?
Damien said on 2/Mar/07
Ok, perhaps he was, but if he was, why would one down grade his height? All the other actors that we know are not their stated height are shorter. Who caused this rumor? I am honest in my inquire.
Maria said on 28/Feb/07
I commented further down, but I recently talked with his stand-in, Mike Steckler, who himself is 6' and who verified Power's height as 6'. I also maintain that the conversation on "What's My Line" when Ms. Kilgallen was so upset believing he gave her a false answer is a clear indication of his height.
Damien said on 24/Feb/07
I just had a thought, if he was the height you have him at, why did his piloting license indicate that he was 5'10", if he was 5'10.5" then it was just a matter of rounding, also from In Old Chicago, the man who played the Senator was 5'11.5", Ty is shorter by at least an inch.
Damien said on 23/Feb/07
Just saw In Old Chicago, Tyrone was a good inch and a half to two inches shorter than 6' Andy Devine, just as I thought, at best 5'11", most likely 5'10" or 5'10.5".
Damien said on 17/Feb/07
I just saw Witness to the Prosecution last night, or really this morning, Ty's height was always changing. He was sometimes as tall as 6' Henry Danell but was usually more 5'10" ish. My guess, 5'10" maybe 5'11", no more. But back to WFTP, Marlene Dietrich, who was 5'6" looked almost the same height as him at the end, granted she was wearing heels. Also in The Danny Duschen Story (pardon my spelling), Kim Novak was only a little shorter than Ty, again in heels and 5'6". I really doubt he was more than 5'11".
Maria said on 24/Sep/06
I think I can answer this one - sorry, but I just found this thread.

When he was on What's My Line as the mystery guest, Dorothy Kilgallen said, are you over 6 feet, and he answered no. When Arlene Francis eventually guessed Tyrone, Dorothy (who had actually gone out with him years earlier was upset). "Why didn't you say yes when I asked if you were six feet?" she asked. Daly said, "No, you asked if he was OVER 6 feet. So that would indicate he was six feet.

I own a tuxedo coat of his that was made in Italy in 1949, and it says 43 inside - it fits a friend of mine perfectly, and he is ovber 6 feet. Hope this helps somehow.

My wife says I should write a book. But I'm too lazy.

Unfortunately I never met William Powell. He was another actor who looked taller than he actually was. I doubt he was any taller than 5'10-1/2". I just watched him in a series of movies TCM ran and in scenes with actors who I know to be 6' tall he was an inch and a half to two inches shorter. When he appeared with Jimmy Stewart in one of the Thin Man films he was about five inches shorter.

Frank - did you ever meet William Powell whom you reference below? One of my favorite actors. Photos of him post 1960 or so seem rare although Richard Lamparski had a late 60s picture of him in one of his books. I've read he lost his hearing at some point which may account for why he stayed out of the limelight the last couple decades of his life.

Although he picked a great role to go out on (Doc in Mr. Roberts). I was surprised that even then he wasn't much shorter than Fonda. 5'11" seems right for him.

Also, you should consider starting a blog detailing your stories...they make fascinating reading.

What's interesting about Power is that he never wore lifts in his non-costume films and he was usually taller than actors who I definitely know were 5'10" such as Dana Andrews and Don Ameche. In the film Crash Dive, Power was at least an inch taller that Andrews in every scene, long shots and close up's. Power wasn't that much shorter than 6'1" Marty Milner in The Long Gray Line. In that same film Power was only a couple of inches shorter than 6'2" Ward Bond. There's a scene where they're in a boxing ring and in all the angles Power isn't that short next to Bond. Maybe for once the studio publicity department was correct when they listed him as 6'. I'd like to know what his medical records show when he entered the Marines during WW II. Power became a combat pilot. The studio desperately tried to keep him in the states training fighter pilots, but Power was able to get overseas and did fly at least a couple of dangerous missions. He was a private pilot in civilian life and enjoyed flying. He was a big star, one of the biggest and unlike today's pretty boys, he could act and had at his disposal a great, stage-trained voice. That voice was sadly silenced in 1958 when he suffered a massive heart attack while filming a strenuous sword fight sequence with George Sanders in Solomon and Sheba. He was just 44 years old. Tragic. Power was replaced in that film by a much shorter actor, Yul Brynner(5'7"). In the editing process shots of Power were retained in most of the long shots and he can clearly be spotted if you watch the film closely.

Tyrone Power always looked more 5'11" to 6' to me. In THE RAZOR'S edge he only looked about 3" shorter than John Payne at at least Clifton Webb's height. I think Mr. Power needs to be bumped up to at least 5'11".

Here's Ty standing next to 5'9" Cameron Mitchell playing an Indian in the film Pony Soldier (1952): Click Here (Could those be lifts in Cameron's custom-made moccasins? Inquiring minds wish to know) Speaking of Mitchell, he wore huge lifts in How to Marry a Millionaire. They looked sort of like what Desi arnaz and Bing Crosby wore. With them on he was about the same height as 5'11" William Powell.

One thing that's always bugged me is that Power was the exact, same height as 6' Hugh Marlowe in Rawhide. I saw Marlowe in person with of all people Michael Rennie and Marlowe was definitely at leats 6'. He was about four inches shorter than Rennie who was 6'4". Marlowe was taller than 5'11" Clifton Webb in one of the Mr.Belvedere movies and was the same height as Cary Grant in Monkey Business. Come to think of it, Power was the same height as Webb in The Razor's Edge! Hmmmmmmmmm.....Maybe Power was taller!

As you can tell, being retired does provide me with a lot of free time.
