How tall is Al Pacino ?

Home :: About  Latest :: Comments :: Top 50

Al Pacino's height is 5ft 5.5in (166 cm)

Peak height was 5ft 6in (168 cm)
American actor best known for playing Michael Corleone in The GodFather Trilogy, Tony Montana in Scarface and memorable roles in Carlito's Way, Heat, Glengarry Glen Ross, Scent of a Woman and Dog Day Afternoon. In the book Godfather Legacy, Harlan Lebo writes, "He wore lifts in other scenes", although another book 'A Life on the Wire' mentioned that Coppola's idea of putting Al in elevator shoes backfired, "You're walking like Donald Duck!", to which Pacino replied "Get these lifts out of my shoes and I may walk straighter."

Comment on the Height of Al Pacino

Regardless of what his peak height was, he's always been a badass. I always associate him with the role he had in the iconic Scarface movie. You wouldn't care about someone's height if he had that personality.
mande2013 said on 2/Nov/15
Well 5'9 Chris O'Donnell had an easy three inches on him in Scent of a Woman, so perhaps not.

Rob, is there any chance of Pacino ever getting an upgrade to 5'7 peak rather than 5'6 like you did with Ringo and Bruno Ganz?
[Editor Rob: I'm not sure]

Would be interesting to see an early 70s photo with Pacino and Dustin Hoffman, Pacino did give a slightly taller impression I think.
Here's another pretty good photo of Pacino and De Niro, in younger years.

i worked at universal studios and saw al pacino in the 90's he is 5'2" at best!!! i never saw him before and was shocked how short he was, great booming voice and talent !!! One of the best all time !!!

Maybe because that was the whole point ? He is exactly what you don't expect from some all powerful being. I always saw him as 5'6 peak to be honest and 5'4 now.

He came to see a house we were selling in NYC about 20 years ago. I'm 5'4" and he was definitely no taller than me.

I remember when I saw 'The Devil's Advocate'. I wondered at the logic of the devil - who could appear as any person - choosing to appear as such a shorty. Wouldn't he want to be tall and handsome/

In any case Pacino seems to me to be no more than 5'2" or so. I just was looking at pictures of Pacino with Sidney Lumet. Lumet is clearly taller but he is listed at 5'5".

"The Godfather" producer, Robert Evans, described Pacino as "5'5" in lifts". He could've been exaggerating though.
Sam said on 7/Jan/15
If Pacino was uncomfortable in lifts, too bad he wasn't around recently. Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. could co-teach a course on the fine points of lift wearing.

he was shorter than barkin in sea of love. does anyone here want to talk about that?
Sam said on 21/Jul/14
Agreed that Pacino is great in the 70s but not over De Niro, De Niro was just about as good as screen acting ever gets in the 70s and early 80s IMO...I almost always identified with his characters despite their less than stellar behavior, he was as technically good as Day-Lewis is and as electrifying as Brando was but seemed edgier than both, like he was genuinely dangerous and unpredictable...key word WAS.

I like Pacino's more internal work in some like The Godfather and Scarecrow than his more shouty later stuff like Scent of a Woman or the quite silly Devil's Advocate...Dog Day Afternoon might be his best, mostly internal with showy bits but ones that never seem over the top. Height-wise, I always thought he could edge out Hoffman but not by much.

@Sam, Yeah Tracy, Olivier, Freeman and Hoffman are also among my favourites. Olivier's performance in Sleuth was one of the best I've ever seen from a film actor. Day-Lewis for me though has had some staggeringly brilliant performances which I think make him stand above the others. Obviously Brando, Laurence Harvey, Robert Ryan, and many others were great actors too. Any of those we mentioned are in my top 10 anyway.
John said on 19/Jul/14

I don't have a list, but I've always thought Pacino was the better, more versatile actor than De Niro in his prime. Both have tailed off later in their career, though with Pacino overacting from the 90's on, and De Niro seeming to mail in a lot of performances, though as for later work, I thought Pacino was great in Donnie Brasco and Insomnia.
Sam said on 17/Jul/14
A lot of people would also mention Spencer Tracy, Laurence Olivier, Dustin Hoffman, etc. as all-time greats, although it's hard to dispute DDL and peak Robert De Niro being at or near the top all-time. Arch, I'm assuming your giving the edge to Day-Lewis due to De Niro's later work. Some people may have thrown in Gary Oldman, at least until last month, and Morgan Freeman.
RisingForce said on 17/Jul/14
Pacino was wearing heeled boots, though, possibly cowboy boots in Carlito's Way, iirc. Good movie, though and great actor. I don't think he's lost much height for his age so this listing is pretty good, but it wouldn't surprise me if 5'5.5" was even his peak height considering how small he could look in some movies even in the 70's, but he could also look close to 5'7" in some shoes.
Arch Stanton said on 16/Jul/14

Strong 5 '5 man peak 5'4.5 now
RisingForce said on 30/Apr/14
For reference, looking at listings for Pacino, it's surprising how few question his official 5'7" listing, though he's also gotten multiple 5'6" and 5'5" descriptions over the years, and there was one 1993 article that said he was shorter than the "5-7 propaganda" as they put it. When talking about casting for the Godfather, Robert Evans famously said "This kid Pacino's five-five and that's in heels."

He can look 5'6", but I've never been sold on it, especially due to how short he looked in the Godfather with a 5'9"-5'10" James Caan, a 5'8"-5'9" Brando and all 3 reportedly wearing lifts. Or this scene from The Devil's Advocate Click Here Look how short he still looks with 6'1" Keanu Reeves and check out his shoes around 0:19. Large heels, a pretty thick front and possibly lifts. Phenomenal actor, but 5'6" is the most I could ever see and it's possible he was never a full 5'6" and more 5'5" range, though I really think he's lost very little height for a man 74, much like Chuck Norris.

I've never met him - but how would I know. I was 6'4" until I fell off the cliff. I could have seen him on the street but just looked right over his itty-bitty head.

I have a good friend who is 5'4". He seems bigger in real life than that. On the stage however he is revealed at his true height. My friend Ross is a much better actor than Pacino of course. Pacino is not really an actor at all. He only plays one role - an over acting Mafiosi.

He was however pretty good in Donny Brasco. He always was by nature a supporting player who got lucky when cast in the 'Godfather'. He was a natural for the role of 'third man through the door'.

Rob, what would you consider the best male acting performance ever in a film? His performance in Scent of a Woman in my opinion comes close. It was brilliant, he had the "blind asshole" colonel type nailed perfectly. Seeing him tango and drive a Ferrari blind was just extraordinary. Daniel Day Lewis's performance in My Left Foot and Dustin Hoffman's in Rain Man also come close I think.

Jonathan Pryce really looks about 7 inches taller in Glengarry. When he and Pryce speak up close they angle it so it only looks 4-5 inches but when the camera zooms out and shows them from a distance he's clearly got at least 6 inches on him, in fact it looks nearer 7-8. You have Pryce at 6' flat on here which is a little low for his peak IMO but that makes a full 5'6" dubious.

He's one of the greatest actors I've ever seen, just look at his eyes in the Godfather films, deep, meaningful and dangerous, I can't think of anybody who could play his role in that and Scarface more effectively, he really is very believable as a mafia boss/drug lord.

Arch Stanton said on 21/May/13
It would have been difficult for him to have worn lifts in the street scene in the Godfather. You could see he was wearing normal shoes in the Sicily scenes and also in the street scene with Diane Keaton, but I noticed they had her walking in a ditch and him further up on the road to make him look taller. But you could see with him walking through the hospital in particular that he was 5'6 max. I think even in the wedding scenes with the ridiculously hot Simonetta Stefanelli that they had him on higher ground to make the height difference look more, but I think she's about 5 ft 4 and shorter anyway, a wild guess though. I once went to the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy and saw the hottest woman I've ever seen in my life hop on the bus to Sorrento and she closely resembled Stefanelli, the sort of girl you'd fall in love with at first site!

I might 'tower' over Pacino. But I've never met him. I remember meeting Gregory Peck at Vegas a long time ago. He seemed so small in person.

One of my best friends is 5'4" - exactly a foot shorter than I am. Pacino doesn't look that tall to me. I'll go with Anonymous' estimate of 5'2".

My real objection isn't his stature but everything else. In "Righeous Kill" he played a street cop. He was seventy years old at the time and looked every day of it in spite of all the black hair dye. He was quite contained and effective in the Godfather films but more recently hasn't been so much an actor as an over-actor. He should take a page from Eastwood and age gracefully.

@Shakesniper, you "towered over him" at 5'6"? I laugh when people use the word "towered" to describe a few inches difference. I mean if you were over 6 feet tall then you could say "I towered over him." Anyway, Pacino is no taller than 5'5" today.

Well, Danimal, I'll agree that he can look 5-7ish, and you're not the only one who thinks he's that height, but I strongly believe he's about 5'8". The reason he looks shorter, in my opinion is his poor posture in recent years. If he was really about 5'7", I think he'd look 5'6" range a lot of the time with his posture. When his posture is decent, he looks more like 5'8" to me. I can buy a weak 5'8", but he looks like a guy on the low end of average, not legitimately short to me. When he was younger, I think he was right around 5'9", so about an inch loss at 69 would be normal.
RisingForce said on 14/Oct/12
Pacino and 5'8" De Niro in 2008 at the Righteous Kill premiere. Click Here Here's video. Click Here

Pacino still looks pretty much exactly 5'5" there. If he's under 5'5", it's barely, and if he was ever over 5'5", I doubt it was my much. I think he's just an example of a guy who didn't lose much height. I think some might think he has because there are more premiere pictures available today than the 70's and 80's, and I don't think Pacino wears at premieres, but he does wear lifts and heels in many movies, so I think many have the lifted Pacino in movies from the 70's and 80's in mind compared to the recent liftless Pacino at premieres.
The Exorcist said on 10/Oct/12
I think that 5'6" is right for his peak, but he looks about 5'5" nowadays.
RisingForce said on 28/Sep/12
Pacino still looks about 5'5" just like he always was. He's worn lifts and boots with big heels in countless movies and still rarely above 5'6". He wore lifts in the Godfather and was dwarfed by 5'10" max James Caan(though I heard Caan wore lifts in the movie too). His shoes were suspicious in And Justice For All and he still barely came past 6'3"-6'4" Craig T Nelson's shoulders. He had boots with big heels in Scarface, though he could pull off 5'7" in some scenes next to 6'1" Steven Bauer, but that's when you couldn't see their feet. He wore cowboy boots in Carlito's Way and was still shorter than 5'8" Sean Penn in slippers.

And finally, look at this scene from The Devil's Advocate. Click Here He only looks about 5'6" at best next to 6'1" keanu Reeves, but you see his shoes in this scene and he has massive heels.

I wouldn't bother with a peak height. I think he's about 5'5" like he's always been. If I gave a peak height and current it'd be 5'5.5" peak and 5'5" current, but I don't see a difference. It doesn't change the fact that Pacino is a living legend. He's made many classic movies, had many diverse roles that he played amazingly well and is the greatest actor ever to me. But probably never a full 5'6", and probably still not under 5'5" even today.

in Dog's Day Afternoon he looked as short as 165 with shoes on (the part where he is on the street and standing while shouting).

he used to be 168cm for sure but not today, today he is lucky to be 165cm
marlon said on 7/Oct/07
He is certainly nor under 5ft 6. He looked an average height in scarface and in carlitos way. He may now be a touch shorter than when he was younger.
glenn said on 5/Oct/07
he would sign or pose,no problem.but had an attitude.a bit of a dick.saw him a few months back and he was great.different person.
Tommy Gunn said on 4/Oct/07
I've been looking over some of Pacino's movies the guy really is a legend and I really gotta agree that 5ft 6in is almost certainly his height, sure he can look that little bit shorter or even that little bit taller but can't we all?
joe said on 4/Oct/07
I agree with gin's opinions. He is clearly 5'6 dead on or a shade under. What was pacino like when you met him glenn?
Gin said on 26/Sep/07
Al clearly is 5'6, no doubt about that.I agree with glenn that he could look 5'8 as the max height. I saw him in Scarface and he really looked in a decent height. Apparently he was wearing lifts in that film, that's why he looks 5'8...Good actor, love his works just like how i love robert de niro's. I'm a big mafia movies fan. And i have to say that Al's portrayal of being D BOSS is a good showing that even below average height guys can rule.
glenn said on 4/Sep/07
in the street he can look 5-6,and a little time in lifts appeared 5-8.i read 5-7 for his tailor maybe he was once.not in the last 20 years.
derbi said on 3/Sep/07
glenn, what do you think is the tallest possible for al pacino?
marlon said on 30/Aug/07
Pacino looked a full 5ft 7 in the first 2 godfather films and in scarface. He looked even taller near 5ft 10 in carlitos way.
clint said on 4/Aug/07
He did not look short atall in carlitos way. But he could have worn a few inch lifts beneath his shoes. But i dont think he is under the 5ft 6 mark.
sonny said on 3/Aug/07
In his movies, Al controls the stage, alike a mere handful of other great actors/performers, and his height is really no issue at all. While the viewer becomes wrapped up in Al's characters, all thoughts of height or weight vanish. In many ways, Al stands as testimony to the age-old wisdom that it matters not if you are big or small, it's what you have inside that ultimately counts.
glenn said on 27/Jul/07
saw him last month. hadnt seen him in a decade.looked great.younger.
dits said on 26/Jul/07

He's an example not just for the shorter men out there, but even the taller ones. Never,NEVER has he let his height come in his way..Look at Godfather, where he plays the role of the all-powerful Don so well that whoever is in front of him just looks meek, even if he or she is taller.

And then see of my favorite movies. He just owns everyone in that movie. See Carlito's Way,or Heat, and you see how confident this man is; what an example to follow. I just wish he'd have aged better..
jackie said on 26/Jul/07
I saw a comment of George H. (waving to George!) on the Dustin Hoffman page about the height difference between Al Pacino and Warren Beatty in "Dick Tracy". It's quite hard to determine the real difference in heights, because they never really stand next to each other, and the scene you refer to where they are fighting, is shot from quite a distance. But you are definitely right that Warren simply dwarfes Al, and would have done so even if Al had stretched to full "height". Here's a collage of how Al and Warren relate to their co-stars in Dick Tracy, Madonna and Glenne Headly: Click Here Madonna was wearing massive platform shoes throughout most of the movie, Headly is listed in most publications as 5'7"-5'8" and is wearing 1-2 inch heels in her scenes.
I saw a short video film on a papparazi website once of Al and Warren leaving a restaurant together. Warren was a few feet ahead of Al, descending the steps before him. I counted four steps before he and Al looked the same height before the camera, but of course I don't know the height of each individual step plus Warren got closer to the camera with each step he descended while Al lingered a bit behind.....

i think his short stature just makes him cooler, hes confident and it doesn't seem 2 bother him

[Editor Rob: he's likely lost 1/2 inch just going on averages, if anything he's missing a 5ft 5.5 current height]

Dog's Day Afternoon is one of the best movies to really see AL PACINO real height.

Melvin said on 25/Jun/07

the shredder said on 25/Apr/07
Yea , Pacino was about 5'5 and 1/2 , 5'5 and 3/4 at his peak and about 5'4 maybe 5'5 now . He looks 5'6 with Glenn in cowboy boots ... on the movie Two for the Money he said in 1 scene that his father was 5 foot tall and he points to his nose ... LOL ... not 7 inches , more like 4 !!!!
JOSH said on 23/Apr/07
pacino was never 5ft 7 as he wore lifts in many films like the godfather where 5ft 8.75 brando and 5ft 10 caan towered on him and that was when he was wearing lifts in some scenes. I would say he was no more than 5ft 5 and a half. but he doesnt need to be tall as he will always be the greatest screen legend ofall time.
the shredder said on 15/Apr/07
Rob , how come you dn't give him a peak height ? ... Also , the peak height can't be 5'7 . Look at some still pics from the Godfather ! ... Altough they wear lifts , looking at the pics , If Pacino was 5'7 it would have made Brando 6'0 and Cann 6'2 (in lifts though ) ! ... sh!t , Pacino could have been 5'5 at peak ?
Anonymous said on 12/Apr/07
All the Godfather movies and others they always shoot him a certain angle. Some of the godfather scenes he is sitting down a lot. In his prime 5'5 all of the actress's he worked with are either 5'6 or shorter. Al wears the HEELS instead of the women.
the shredder said on 10/Apr/07
5'6 peak , 5'5 now ! ... Fair deal ! ... I can't see 5'7 peak ,more like weak 5'6 , or maybe 5'5.5 ! Just look at him next to Brando and Caan ! Does not look near 5'7 at all !

Al was a heavy smoker that is why is voice is shot. I just got done watching Godfather 2 he looked short compared to everyone else. But he is still number 1!

Franco said on 1/Apr/07
@Leonari : i didnt say AL PACINO isn't the most amazing actor ever, but i really think he is 5'5 and that picture shows it, sure i know the suite looks make him look shorter and wider but the reality is still the same.

AL PACINO today is 5'5. :)
D. Ray Morton said on 27/Mar/07

leonari said on 27/Mar/07
franco: NOTHING happened to him! He isn't wearing lifts in that pic, wears a bad suit and his torso is much wider these days due to his age so he appears shorter than ever. I think this pic pretty much proves the 5'5" estimates that many see...maybe he was close to 5'6" in the Godfather (But I doubt it) but today he is a flat 5'5" guy and still a legend and one of the most amazing actors ever.
Alex R said on 26/Mar/07
Hey all.
I got the chance to work with Al back in the late 80's as an extra in the film "Sea of love" along with along with John Goodman. Standing next to both, in front of the camera, and off on 2 different days, I can say that Al is 5'5".
And that I know because thats how tall I am.

I saw his latest 2007 movie called "88" and here's a screenshot...he looks 1.65cm with shoes! MY GOD he is super short, wtf happend to him?!

please look at it?
Franco said on 23/Mar/07
after reading here i pulled out my dvd or DOG DAY AFTERNOON.....

and the part where he is walking in the street screaming trying to get the crowd he looked so short i was wondering wtf is going on, he look as short as 5'1 !!!!! gotta be camera effect for sure.

if i gotta be honest, i saw him during the filming of MERCHANT OF VENICE here in ITALY and he had his usual formal dress and very obvious shoes (lifts!), my mom who is 5'6 was eye 2 eye with him when she went to ask for an autograph.

today ALPACINO is a weak 5'5 and he used to be a weak 5'6 in the early days.
there's nothing more to it, it is the truth, as such i consider the 5'6 given in this site correct. ;)
Anonymous said on 2/Mar/07
I've seen him on three seperate occasions, he goes to the same dentist as me. The last time I saw him was back in September of 2005 when I was 13 and 5'5", and he wasn't noticibly taller, I'd say 5'6" is about right.
AL said on 2/Mar/07
Pacino s proper height was probarbly just touching the 5ft 6 mark.
These days he could be a bit under that.
I ve also been told in the book he wore lifts in many films.

the shredder said on 23/Feb/07
Yep tall guy ! Pacino was NEVER near 5 ft 7 ! 5'5 now , 5'6 ABSOLUTELY MAX
at peak ! Even De Niro said he was alot taller then him ! Why would a 5 ft 9ish guy say that about a 5'6 - 5'7 guy ??? Because Pacino is about 5'5 !
tall guy said on 21/Feb/07
this guy is quite short, but virtually no one admits to being shorter than 5-7 its like some kind of actor minimum, but he was certainly shorter maybe 5-5ish these days

He looks about 5'4" in "Two for the money". His character makes references to him being short, and says that his movie dad was 5'0".

MacConaughey and Rene Russo tower him in ever scene.
UNK said on 10/Jan/07
I think he has always struggled with 5'6". A healthy man shouldn't lose more than .5-1" by Al's age. Women usually lose more height than men as they get old. I'm not saying men don't lose height but there shouldn't be significant height loss, unless you have a bone disease, before 75 yrs old or so.
Felix said on 10/Jan/07

no doubts about the "massive" lifts LOL but i have the feeling they aren't as sophisticated as Tom Cruise ones hehehe, even with lifts he didn't reach mr. Glenn.

AL PACINO use lifts because he's short.......Tom Cruise use lifts not because he is short, but because he got an inferiority problem (besides the stupid media bombardments).

Al Pacino is bigger than life no matter how tall he is.
leonari said on 16/Oct/06
I also have the feeling that Pacino coul in fact be half an inch smaller than 168 cm...tiny frame and well proportioned makes him look taller. And lifts of course.

oh i'm 27 years old and exactly 1.93cm, my whole family is blessed with height, my dad is 1.88cm, my sister is 1.75 and my mom is *drum rolls* 1.68cm (same as al pacino).

Funny tale. Friend of mine saw a guy who was a dead ringer for Al with about 10 years more on him. We got some fake New York driver's license made for him and made him his "brother". We went to Vegas and took him with us. We got comped meals, shows, etc. It was great. This poor guy lived the Tony Montana just off the boat life and man we decked him in threads right out of "Scarface" and he was having people running up to him "Mr. Pacino" and living the life. We're gonna do it again when "Ocean's 13" films again next month there. Problem is, the guy doesn't have a phone.

He is my favourite actor(With DeNiro and Gazzara). I think that Pacino is 167cm because in the movie "Donnie Brasco" he weared normal shoes with an exterior heel of 1.25 and Johnny Depp weared cowboy boots with 2 inches heels and Depp appeared exactly 4 inches taller than him.I think Johnny Depp is 175cm barefoot (5'9") +2 inches heel 180cm(5'11").I think Pacino is 167cm barefoot (5'5.75) and with 1.25 heel 170 (5'7").

Pacino has never been any taller than 5'5". Look at the wedding picture of him standing next to 5'8.75" Brando and 5'9" James Caan they appear almost a head taller! Elevators can easily make a 5'5" guy 5'7" or 8.

Looking at Glenn's pic Al looks about 2 inches shorter. Just look at where their noses are in relation to each other, or their chins. Since their hair blends in with the background so much it's impossible to tell where the top of their heads are.

Also, considering Al was wearing large heeled shoes, we should subtract another inch from his height, at least half an inch. So his height has to be 5'5" or 5'5.5". I'd say he was 5'6" at his peek.

Mario said on 11/Feb/06
Glenn 5 ft 8 + 1 inch of Glenn's shoes = 5 ft 9 (I suppose that Glenn did wear shoes)
Pacino 5 ft 6 + 2 inch of his boots = 5 ft 8.

In Scarface he did look 5 ft 7 next to 6 ft 1.25 Steven Bauer, 6 ft Murray Abraham and 5 ft 10 Robert Loggia. His shoes don't looked suspectious to me.

True that there are some pictures in wich he looks 5 inches shorter than Brando, but pictures can be confusing. James Caan did wear lifts in The Godfather because his character was decribed as a "Tall 6 ft sicilian".

Pacino is such a great actor he makes himself much bigger than he really is. 5'6" is what he can reach while playing roles like Scent of Woman or Dog Day. Off screen at home after taking a crap while standing in his robe waiting for the coffee to brew he is actually 5' even. This then is a compliment to him for who else but the great Al Pacino could add a half a foot to his height merely through acting?
