Yo Tellem, about your ignorance post in January; The average male height might well be 5 9 now, but it was NOT that in the 1700's! At the turn of the century (1900 or so) average male height was 5 4 or 5 5. Improved nutrition has increased this over the last 100 years. In the old days of Hollywood nearly every male actor wore lifts. Leading men had to look tall next to their partners, guys like Bogart did almost everything from camera angles to huge platform shoes to look bigger. In the generation change of the late 1960s - early 1970s when people like Pacino, Dustin Hoffmann or Peter Falk became stars it wasn't a huge disadvantage for these "average guys" to be short anymore. Of course action heroes like Tom Cruise, Stallone or Mel Gibson still suffered from being short and stayed with the htradition of huge lifts.

In the film people i know 5ft 6-7 kim basinger looked a good inch and a bit taller than pacino and they were both in normal flat footwear. I say around the 5ft 5 mark at the lowest without shoes. Sometimes I swear Al looks 5-5 max. In the Godfather he was just towered by a 5-10 James Caan by probably 5 inches. I've heard people speculate that Caan wore lifts, but it's a known fact that Pacino did as well in that film.
Then what also fuels my short theories are the fact that Sean Penn barefoot was taller than Pacino in 2" cowboy boots in Carlito's Way! How tall is Penn? 5-7 or 5-8? Not to mention that in 2" or 2.5" heels Pacino still looked tiny in Scarface. Even with the heels I could swear he looked 5'4", 5'5" sometimes! For years I thought Steven Bauer was huge because of how he towered over Pacino. Then in the Devil's Advocate even with some huge shoes, 6-1 Keanu Reeves looked nearly a head taller than him.
I have no problem with 5'6" for Al, but sometimes he really struggles with that height. Regardless of height he may be my favorite actor though, so this is nothing against him. I always thought Pacino a similar height to Hoffman, was around 5'6", now around 5'5", he is probably actually a little taller than Hoffman ever was by half an inch?. A weak 5'6" could be right for his peak height. Maybe more like 5'5" by the time Glenn met him.
Of course Brad saw him when he was 6'4" and was able to magically tell that Pacino was exactly 11 inches shorter than him in 1974.....

Godfather and Scarface = 5'7.25 in shoes that looks like elevators, so weak 5'6 no shoes
Scent of a woman = looks 5'6.5 in shoes, so 5'5.75 no shoes
Insomnia = looks amazingly tallish in normal shoes around 5'7, possibly 5'6 no shoes
Dogs day afternoon = looks as short as 5'5 in shoes possibly 5'4 without shoes
Devil's advocate = huge lifts very visible in the final scene (i posted the image below), looks 5'6.5 tops in shoes, so 5'5 no shoes.
88 minutes = 5'6 in normal shoes, 5'5 no shoes
the final word for me is this, early movies till 1990 he was 5'6.5, after the 90s 5'6, late 90s and 2000+ = 5'5 to 5'5.5.
the AL PACINO average is 5'6 and i believe he has never been 5'7, 5'6.5 is the tallest he ever was.

Depends on if they are in the North or South, Southern Italians are shorter and darker. My family is from a town near the toe of Italy (south) and everyone there is short. I'm 5'8" (only because my father is 5'10") and my maternal uncles are 5'3" and 5'4"...my maternal Grandfather was 5'2" and basically everyone on that side of the family is short. The tallest male I know is a cousin who is 5'6". Not indicative of EVERYONE in Southern Italy but from what they tell me, that is the norm around there. Lego says on 29/Aug/08

in CRUISING he looked lean and tallish (he was young), played the part of a gay police officer, awesome acting imo, he had simple 0.75 sport shoes walking next to a 5'11 guy he looked just about 5'7 around 170-171cm.
in the movie 88 minutes in dress shoes (and god knows what inside it) he looked barely 5'6.
my take : 169-170cm before the 90s, 168-169cm late 90s and now 166-167 2000+ that's where he really seemed to shrink.
timeless actor, many excellent movies and only a couple of average ones, his presence always lifted any bad movie above average.

I'm only 5'6" but for some reason people give you slack if you're short and Italian, which I am. Especially women. Don't know why. It's like they expect you to be short. The tallest person in my family was my grandfather at 5' 10". It's rare to see an Italian man near the 6 foot mark. Most of us are 5'5" to 5'9". Of course there are exceptions. Now , Im telling you all Brando and Pacino both had very normal looking dress shoes on ... Really , adding NOTHING over about 0.5 - 2cm ... NO WAY LIFTS for both ! With that being said Brando was a legit 5'10 or Pacino was not even 5'6 at his peak ! ... Also John Cazale shoes looked very normal BUT James Cann shoes looked funny ... had the chance to see him from a distance of around 3 meters, he had these strange looking dress shoes the heels looked quite elevated and he was walking funny somehow, with all these extras he didn't look anything over 170cm, this was in 2006 in Madrid Spain.

Just watched a recording from AFI where they honored AL. Man Sean Penn looks tall next to Pacino!!! In my opinion Pacino was a weak 5'6" peak height in his youth. Today he is much much closer to 5'5". That shows that a small guy can have enormous screen presence... And even though AL is shorter than most men he is 7 feet tall when the director yells action. I saw a comment of George H. (waving to George!) on the Dustin Hoffman page about the height difference between Al Pacino and Warren Beatty in "Dick Tracy". It's quite hard to determine the real difference in heights, because they never really stand next to each other, and the scene you refer to where they are fighting, is shot from quite a distance. But you are definitely right that Warren simply dwarfes Al, and would have done so even if Al had stretched to full "height". I saw a short video film on a papparazi website once of Al and Warren leaving a restaurant together. Warren was a few feet ahead of Al, descending the steps before him. I got the chance to work with Al back in the late 80's as an extra in the film "Sea of love" along with along with John Goodman. Standing next to both, in front of the camera, and off on 2 different days, I can say that Al is 5'5".

Funny tale. Friend of mine saw a guy who was a dead ringer for Al with about 10 years more on him. We got some fake New York driver's license made for him and made him his "brother". We went to Vegas and took him with us. We got comped meals, shows, etc. It was great.
