@Josh: you mean a semigod? I totally agree :)
Josh says on 28/Dec/11
I don't care, he is a half god, no matter the height, no matter the weight
Dave says on 10/Dec/11
I heard that he started to drink at the AGE OF 9 , and also started smoking at 13 , 1 year before puberty, that maybe has made him not reach his full growth potential. I think he could be dead on 5'5 nowadays and 5'6 peak
SIlent d says on 30/Nov/11
Does he have size 11 feet josh? If joe pesci is listed as 5 foot 4 then al pacino is 166cm. He looks that height in jack and jill with adam sandler. One of the best actors of all time.
josh says on 18/Nov/11
he may be short but ill say this i saw his foot print on the walk of fame..the man has big ass feet ..soo maybe wat he lacks in height hes got in his pants HA

No doubt about it: he's short, but that doesn't take away from his ability. He's a charismatic, intense performer. His greatest achievement in cinema is as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna in Michael Mann's 1995 masterpiece, HEAT--THE GODFATHER films are overrated. Rob, you've got Pacino's measurements perfectly.

Peak: 5'6"
Today in 2011 at 71: 5'5" - 5'5 1/2"

Rob could he be as low as 5ft 5in today or is that too low?
[Editor Rob: it's not impossible, I would say today somewhere in 5ft 5 range is probable]

uncle al-pachino is 164cm. even lower at 163.5cm before bed.

About 1,68-1,72 cm.

Rob , if we go with 168cm for Al then what height is James Cann and Brando Pulling off ... btw , is the HAT making Pacino look shorter because of the eyes ?

Rob , do you see 5'6 or 5'7 there ? ... those are average height guys ... Al looks short there ... how is he 5'7 peak . even 167cm looks a lot in the photo ?
[Editor Rob: I don't give him a 5ft 7 peak, I give him the 5ft 6 and today he could be half inch shy of it.]

Only .5" shorter than his peak? He's 71 years old. The average man loses 1.25" by 70 Rob.

in 2002 insomnia pachino was age63 and close enough 6inch shorter than 5'10 honest Nicky Katt. he is 5'4.5 in reality. giv or take.
also 5'5 ben stiller is taller than pachino as well. don ask me why ben stiller 5'5? ask jonah hill why he was 5'6 and taller than 5'7 ben stiller by an inch. ha..

Thom says on 12/Oct/11
Let's not forget he's 71, it's perfectly common for people to lose up to 2 inches by the time they're 60. I think he looks about 5"7 in most of the films from the 70s, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's just under 5"6 today.
the shredder says on 9/Oct/11
Look at him with Cann and Brando and say thats a 5'7 peak ... 5'5.75 or so .
LD says on 7/Oct/11
I'm around 5'5-5'6 and he looks about my height. My best friend is 5'7 and I swear Al Pacino doesn't look the same height at all, so it always boggled me how sites listed him at 5'7.
Phil says on 3/Oct/11
@ PatB
"He's been too small for almost every role he's played"
Pacino is short and there is no way around that, but he is a charismatic and good-looking guy. He is not a goofy looking tall guy.
PatBisStupid says on 3/Oct/11
PatB.... if you think he's a one note actor, you obviously haven't seen The Merchant of Venice or You Don't know Jack. Watch all the mans work before you make stupid comments. The guys a legend for a reason.
Phil says on 30/Sep/11
I'm a huge Pacino fan. I just think he is a 5 foot 4 and a half or 5 foot 5 guy.
I don't think he is 5 foot 6
Will says on 29/Sep/11
Al Pacino stands 5-5 tall.
Sam says on 28/Sep/11
Speaking as a 6'5" movie fan, I disagree that (what you seem to be saying) an actors' stature has any bearing on their acting talent or presence. Pacino in the 70s gave several great performances: Serpico, The Godfathers, Dog Day Afternoon, or even more recent films like Glengarry Glen Ross, no one else could have done those roles as well...I'd only agree that in Scarecrow he was miscast. The only Pacino scene where his diminutive size actually put me off a scene was in Heat when he beat up the much more strapping Henry Rollins character.
PatB says on 27/Sep/11
I'm sorry that my remerks about Pacino upset some others, but Pacino is not a very good actor and a lot of that preceeds directly from his height - or lack thereof.

Wallace Shawn is tall enough for the parts he plays. So is Danny DeVito. So is The Rock and so was John Wayne. The problem is that Pacino usually plays tough guys and he looks ridiculous. He was much better in Donnie Brasco where he played an underling. But in Heat and Rightous Kill he plays a lead character whereas he's a natural sidekick.

Pacino became famous in the Godfather films. Remember in that plot he is considered not to be a full blown mobster at first. He's the sweet little kid protected by the large scary mobsters. Then he volunteers to kill Sollozzo. Everyone is amazed. That's the drama. The smallest and youngest of the sons turns out to be the toughest and smartest son and ultimately his father's sucessor. Pacino was nearly perfect for that role and that plot. But alas he's much less than perfect for most other movie roles because of his size. He's a tiny, slight guy and now he's a tiny, slight and old guy.

Watch him in Heat. He chews up the scenery. He's playing the leader of an elite police squad made up of normal size cops. He compensates by continuously overacting. No character in that film refers to him as stumpy, or shorty. They act as if he were a normal size cop. Big city street cops used to have to be six feet tall. A cop his age and his size would be remarked upon by his peers.

Pacino cannot play comedy. He was embarassing in Scarecrow, not funny. He can't play drawing room, or board room either, much less musicals. He has been typecast as an ethnic criminal (or cop) and almost all of his famous roles are within that narrow compass. Even that other short actor who was also typecast as a gangster - James Cagney - had some physicality. If Pacino hit you he looks like he'd break his hand.

Pacino shot to fame playing a small civilized guy who improbably becomes a mob leader. He's been too small for almost every role he's played since.
LUCOSO says on 14/Sep/11
this guy is the proof that even short a guy can be really cool

I'm 5'5". Saw Al Pacino arrive at the theater for a play and he was at least an inch, probably two, under me. Incredibly charming, btw.
Andy says on 27/Aug/11
I saw Pacino at my work 2001. He walked right by me - he was dressed all in black and he had shoes/boots with a "heel" on them. What surprised me is that he was really petite. I swear he could of not been over 5'4
the shredder says on 17/Aug/11
Duvall is hard to pin down ... He looked tall in The godfather for some reason though lol ... I can buy 5'9 though ... Yes Lorne , We should go to New York to get married and Rob can be best man LOL JK !
the shredder says on 16/Aug/11
Sorry guys but Duvall was most likely 5'10 ... Al Pacino imo was about 5'5 in The Godfather ... If not then Brando had monsters on and Cann even bigger monsters
Phil says on 14/Aug/11
Al Pacino is the best. I think he is 5 foot 5.
tell-em says on 13/Aug/11
i dunno about a strong 5'9" peak for duvall. 5'9" flat peak for him makes more sense. he wasn't any taller than robert de niro in TRUE CONFESSIONS and he looked around 5'8" next to ray liotta in JOHN Q. he obviously lost height at that point, but he was 70 and i doubt he lost 1 inch at that point.
the shredder says on 6/Aug/11
Exactly lorne , He was 5'5 in The Godfather ... Brando had an easy 4 " on him .
5\'8.76785 says on 6/Aug/11
He has to be 5'5, because even if Duvall and Caan were wearing lifts, Pacino looked so much shorter than both of them. Caan looked like a giant next to him, Pacino barely reached above the tip of his nose. Still, we all knew he was really short anyways, yet he's one of the best actors who ever lived, and probably the one with the most iconic performances in cinema history. How come he only makes 11 million $ per movie, while talented unknown hobos can take 15+ million $???
tell-em says on 4/Aug/11
lorne: you are aware that duvall, caan and brando also wore lifts right? did u see their shoes aswell? i did, and they all had on lifts. pacino was 5'6" peak or real close to it.

5'6" absolute at his peak.
ArjunaKorale says on 1/Jul/11
The guy who said Pacino is around 5ft 8inches (I think his name is Azza) is COMPLETELY DERANGED!!! He is another of these sad people who believe that their heroes need to be tall or of at least average height. Pacino is an ALL TIME GREAT ACTOR & he is SHORT (between 5ft 5 & 5ft 6)! Nothing u say or do can change that!
tell-em says on 27/Jun/11
lol 5'8" midget size. azza. what planet are yo from?
the shredder says on 26/Jun/11
Azza says on 25/Jun/11
Al Pacino definetly could have been 5'8 at peak straight out of bed/in the morning. 5'8 isn't impossible and is still very very short. 173cm is midget

LOL in that case Brando pulled off looking 6'1 .
SL9 says on 26/Jun/11
173cm is not "midget" it is average height in most of Europe and the rest of the world.
Azza says on 25/Jun/11
Al Pacino definetly could have been 5'8 at peak straight out of bed/in the morning. 5'8 isn't impossible and is still very very short. 173cm is midget

I know Ill get comments at me ... IMO even in The Godfather I think he was like 5'5 ... He looked too short next to average height men Like Brando and Cann . Brando was measured 5'8 and 3/4 at 17 , He had 5 " on Al Pacino .
ArjunaKorale says on 24/Jun/11
Many years ago (1990s!) in an interview I read that he was 5ft 5.5inches tall and the magazine said that he was a half inch taller than Dustin Hoffman who was himself listed as 5ft 5inches. But sadly, I don't know how accurate the magazine was!
Leisa says on 23/Jun/11
I use the doorknob trick. If you do not see a door use a table to measure a person. Al as much as I love him is not close to 5'6", even in his younger days. 5'5" maybe if he had some help. Watch Panic In Needle Park. Compare him to the table and the actor who played Gomez in the ADDAMS FAMILY movies and you can see just how short he is. Although the table is higher than your average dinner table, it comes to about mid abdominal area to Al. He was still beautiful. Just glad I saw Bobby Deerfield first or I might not have had the big enduring crush I have on Al Pacino.
Haters says on 20/Jun/11
"Men measure from toe to head and God measures form head to sky"... obviously Al Pacino measurement is from head to sky...therefore all you knuckleheads are
way off...
Christine says on 17/Jun/11
I saw Al in between takes while shooting a movie. He had on lifts even with the lifts he looked like he was around 5'7 but he had lifts on. So I would say 5'5 now and if you notice all the leading ladies are not any taller than 5'4 except michelle and she had to stand against the wall when they were together.
Will says on 13/Jun/11
Al Pacino is 5'5". End of story people.

I walked with him going to a meeting in CentCity, LA. An extremely educated guess puts him at 5'5 1/2." in films he always wears heels. I'm 6' with trainers on, 5'10 1/2" without.
Mr Cat says on 20/Apr/11
Pacino met the Rock and myself at sundance film festival. When Redford appeared we were astonished by the difference in height between the latter and Pacino. We taught that Redford became obnoxious when he realized that Pacino were lifters; even though the difference between them were over 7 inches.

IMO Pacino, lifts or no lifts, was never short at all. Slighty less than 5'7'' and maybe 168cm now, as stated above.
Kellee says on 22/Jan/11
Mr. Pacino is 5'5 I know this because, the company I work for supplied a few of the vehicles in the funeral scene in the Godfather. I did not meet him, however my Boss did, she is 5'5 and they were eye to eye. She was told he looks taller on film because they put lifts in his shoes, this way he was at least even with Diane Keaton. I don't care if the man were to be 5'1, his talent is unmeasurable! Just like Elvis being the King of Rock, and M.J. the king of pop, Al Pacino is the King of acting... hmmm or the Godfather...lol have a good one all!
Kat says on 21/Jan/11
PatB, what the hell is your problem? Pacino was great in many movies post-Godfather - The Devil's Advocate, Donnie Brasco, Scent of a Woman, Angels in America and most recently You Don't Know Jack - which he just won an emmy and Golden Globe for! So Suck on that...

Back on topic, I say Al is around 5'4 now and 5'6 in his prime...He is very slight built so it makes him look smaller. But it doesn't matter how tall he was/is, he still towers over most men in terms of talent, looks, and charisma:)
Neil McDougall says on 16/Jan/11
PatB, I don't know what you mean by "too slight to be inducted"? Audie Murphy was 5'5" and 110lbs when he enlisted. I don't think he did too badly? He was only the most decorated American soldier of World War II.
Will says on 16/Jan/11
Al Pacino has always and will be a 5'5" maximum. Not too sure of him being at 5'7" barefoot though. These days he has yet looked considerably shorter. Well, possibly due to a little shrink. He is diminutive at being only 5'4 1/2" tall.
Bon says on 14/Jan/11
Strong 5'5 at peak, today certainly a little less.
Brad says on 27/Dec/10
Peak 5' 6". 5' 5" is correct for now.
Spence says on 16/Dec/10
I think he was 5'6 when he was young now 5'5
PatB says on 16/Dec/10
Pacino is IMHO a pretty bad actor. He can take direction, that was clear in the first two Godfather movies. He was cast as a wormy, dirty junkie in his first movie - "Panic in Needle Park". He was firmly on the path to being a minor ethnic character actor when somehow God smiled on him and he got the lead in the Godfather. Coppola gave him dignity and gravitas. He was never so good again.

He fit in the Godfather cast because the actor they wanted to play Sonny was James Caan. Sonny in the book is a very large scary person - probably 6'3" or so. But Caan was about 5'9" - about a half foot too short. Michael in the book is described as an average sized person - maybe 5'9". But with a 5'9" Sonny they needed a 5'3" Michael actor. Michael in the book was a war hero. Al Pacino is probably to slight to be inducted. I don't remember seeing any guys as small as Pacino when I was in the army.

A good actor is a versatile actor. Consider Kevin Kline. He can play heavy drama - "Sophie's Choice" or comedy - "A Fish Called Wanda". He can play the romantic lead or a supporting part. Hell! he can sing and dance too.

Pacino in contrast can only play ethnic mobsters. Luckily for him ethnic mobster movies became very, very popular. So nowadays we have this tiny overacting seventy year old character actor cavorting with women young enough to be his grandaughter and dukeing it out with large strong young men.

There are no spoofs of Pacino movies - he's ridiculous enough as he is.

Coppola wanted to cast Pacino in The Godfather. Producer Robert Evans was dead set against it. "A runt will not play Michael," Evans told Coppola. In addition to Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman, James Caan (who stood at an average 5'9") was among those auditioning for the Oscar-nominated role. In Evans' 1994 memoir, The Kid Stays in the Picture, he describes a tense negotiation process involving door-slamming and remarks, such as, "This ain't Mutt and Jeff. This kid Pacino's five five, and that's in heels."
RisingForce says on 23/Oct/10
I know he wore some monster shoes in The Devil's Advocate, 2 inch heeled boots in Scarface, cowboy boots in Carlito's Way and elevator shoes in The Godfather off the top of my head.

Al is actually my favorite actor, but even with suspicious footwear and tall hair, he looks really short to me in films. I'd think that a weak 5'7" could pull off looking average height with the right footwear and hair style.

You'd know better than me because I'm just guessing and honestly I have no idea what some of these celebrities would look like to me in person, but for what it's worth, being 5'8" myself, I'd be very surprised to be looking almost eye to eye with Pacino. I mean, Sean Penn is apparently my height and he was easily taller than Pacino was in cowboy boots in Carlito's Way. I think there's even a scene with penn taller in slippers than Pacino in cowboy boots.

Anyway, I always appreciate your posts. It's great to hear what someone saw in person.
