Al Pacino's Height
5ft 5.5in (166 cm)
Peak height was 5ft 6in (168 cm)
American actor best known for playing Michael Corleone in The GodFather Trilogy, Tony Montana in Scarface and memorable roles in Carlito's Way, Heat, Glengarry Glen Ross, Scent of a Woman, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon. In the book Godfather Legacy, Harlan Lebo writes, "He wore lifts in other scenes"
, although another book 'A Life on the Wire' mentioned that Coppola's idea of putting Al in elevator shoes backfired, "You're walking like Donald Duck!"
, to which Pacino replied "Get these lifts out of my shoes and I may walk straighter."
Al was short, about 5ft 7...he worried out loud to me that his height might negatively affect his acting career.

This pic I posted on the Brando page is an example of why I'm skeptical Pacino ever reached a full 5'6" Click Here
Wasn't Pacino also noticeably shorter than Glenn in costume for Carlito's Way, which included cowboy boots? Granted, he was over 50 so he could have lost a fraction, but I don't think he's lost that much even now, much less 20+ years ago.

I remember him wearing Cuban heels most of the time I saw his feet in Scarface, but maybe that was from after he met Frank(Robert Loggia) when he was dressed nicer. However, I'd always be wary of close shots that don't show feet in films, especially with a tall supporting actor like Bauer and a short star like Pacino. It's common practice in film to minimize the height difference with a ramp/box/crate/board etc.

Rob , do you think he looks 5'7 minimum in this shot? He had normal shoes
Editor Rob: Shredder, on some occasions Al could look about 5ft 7, I am sure he wears cowboy type boots in that film though?

he looked too short with gene Hackman to have been a full 5'6.

He had good sized Cuban heels in Scarface. He's my favorite dramatic actor, but I think he's always been 5'5" range since he could look really short to me in his 70's films.

I think Pacino was closer to 5'5 than 5'6 even in his youth. A decent 5'6er wearing lifts would have no problem getting close to an average look. He always looks short. My money is on 5'5.25 inch max.

@ Alex J - It must have been fantastic to have worked with Al Pacino! I really enjoyed the film 'Sea of Love' and I own a copy.
But what sort of stinkers cut out the bit-part of a young, excitable fellow? I think that was a thoroughly rotten thing to do to you! You must have copped the impression that the big, bad adult world really sucks!
I wonder if you could find it on the 'extras' of a DVD or Bluray. It's unlikely, but not impossible!
Alex J. said on 6/Dec/16
Hi All. I worked with Al Pacino in the movie Sea of Love, and had a bit speaking role that was cut. That movie I believe was filmed around 1988-1989, and I was 18-19 years old. The scene called for him and John Goodman to come up to me and ask me, as I'm riding a skateboard about a certain place or person, and in between takes, we would both be standing face to face. I have always been 5'6", and that is about how tall he seemed to me. Everything framed up perfectly, his eyes matched mine, his chin, top of his head, etc. Unless he was wearing lifts, I'd say he certainly is 5'5 to 5'6 tops!!

Hey Rob :) curious quotation abovementioned "Get these lifts out of my shoes and I may walk straighter."
You know it happened to me as well and I would like your opinion. I used to be a lift wearer since I was 15 (now I'm in the middle of 20s) but it's been a couple of months since I gave up in using any kind of lifts. The last lifts I was using were about 1cm and half of some branded insoles but the problem was that even if they were designed for comfort (sport or work) after wearing the shoes for some hours I started to feel pain in some part of my legs and lower back as the insoles (and any other kind of lifts) creates an excessive anterior pelvic tilt. So I put them off and I just use a very thin insoles taken from a pair of nike because they are soft and good feeling and..I started to walk very straight and talk, feeling comfy in position feet on the ground..incredible Rob..I thought I would have felt the difference in height but not! I really walk straight and I feel as tall (or more) as I had still my lifts..howthis is possible? Thank you for your time and patience! Greets from Italy !!
Editor Rob: Nanga, a small difference in footwear sometimes won't be that noticeable.
Maybe you just have a more comfy setup and can confidently walk tall.
Lifts aren't for everybody, in fact the percentage of men who wear them is still quite tiny.

Wow. I knew he was short, but it's hard to take him seriously now at 5'5.5. I used to think he was around 5'7", back then he was my favorite actor, but I now feel somewhat betrayed by him, as if he's been living a lie.
Josh Jeffords said on 17/Nov/16
Sounds right on to me he was short and wore lifts could look 5 7 with.
That makes him 5 5 to 5 6 after the 70s godfather should not be used everyone including caters wore em.
Watch him in scarface close to barefoot looked 5 5 in 80s.
I don't think it hurt his career much he is loved and done lots.
He was getting smaller by insomnia maybe under 5 5 but lots if boots in fake alaska.
I disagree on weight he was all over the place could look 140 or 120 in early days up to a solid 160 later.

One enormous icon of Hollywood is Al Pacono! If he is in a film, it is a mark of recommendation. I think I have at least 17 of his films, including all of the above. I have never been disappointed yet!
I've always known he was 5ft6. I must have found out from a film of his but the fact that he is below average height does not distract from his magnificent screen presence! He is also a very attractive man to the opposite sex! He has that extra bit of 'je ne sais quoi', that 'quark, strangeness and charm' that Hawkwind sang about!
I read in the notes just now that he often wore lifts in his roles! Whatever....it bothers me not! He's only lost half an inch, so good on him for that!
He is one of the best actors ever and can portray any emotion - I loved him in 'Donnie Brasco!'
I raise my glass to you Al - a living legend if ever there was one!

Jings Chen what? He's 76 and at 76, from 5'6 He's gotta be 5'5 at least so that would make Hoffman 5'3.5-5'6.5..
Also dude,If Al was 5'6.5 in prime and 5'5.5 now that would make Ted Kramer 5'5.5 and that dude is almost 80 and at 80, he's gotta be at least 5'5 and 5'5.5 peak so that would be normal for both to be at least 5'5 now.
So Rob is it possible that today Pacino and Hoffman are 5'5?

Sam said on 21/Jul/14
Agreed that Pacino is great in the 70s but not over De Niro, De Niro was just about as good as screen acting ever gets in the 70s and early 80s IMO...I almost always identified with his characters despite their less than stellar behavior, he was as technically good as Day-Lewis is and as electrifying as Brando was but seemed edgier than both, like he was genuinely dangerous and unpredictable...key word WAS.
I like Pacino's more internal work in some like The Godfather and Scarecrow than his more shouty later stuff like Scent of a Woman or the quite silly Devil's Advocate...Dog Day Afternoon might be his best, mostly internal with showy bits but ones that never seem over the top. Height-wise, I always thought he could edge out Hoffman but not by much.

@Sam, Yeah Tracy, Olivier, Freeman and Hoffman are also among my favourites. Olivier's performance in Sleuth was one of the best I've ever seen from a film actor. Day-Lewis for me though has had some staggeringly brilliant performances which I think make him stand above the others. Obviously Brando, Laurence Harvey, Robert Ryan, and many others were great actors too. Any of those we mentioned are in my top 10 anyway.

I don't have a list, but I've always thought Pacino was the better, more versatile actor than De Niro in his prime. Both have tailed off later in their career, though with Pacino overacting from the 90's on, and De Niro seeming to mail in a lot of performances, though as for later work, I thought Pacino was great in Donnie Brasco and Insomnia.
Sam said on 17/Jul/14
A lot of people would also mention Spencer Tracy, Laurence Olivier, Dustin Hoffman, etc. as all-time greats, although it's hard to dispute DDL and peak Robert De Niro being at or near the top all-time. Arch, I'm assuming your giving the edge to Day-Lewis due to De Niro's later work. Some people may have thrown in Gary Oldman, at least until last month, and Morgan Freeman.
RisingForce said on 17/Jul/14
Pacino was wearing heeled boots, though, possibly cowboy boots in Carlito's Way, iirc. Good movie, though and great actor. I don't think he's lost much height for his age so this listing is pretty good, but it wouldn't surprise me if 5'5.5" was even his peak height considering how small he could look in some movies even in the 70's, but he could also look close to 5'7" in some shoes.
Arch Stanton said on 16/Jul/14

For reference, looking at listings for Pacino, it's surprising how few question his official 5'7" listing, though he's also gotten multiple 5'6" and 5'5" descriptions over the years, and there was one 1993 article that said he was shorter than the "5-7 propaganda" as they put it. When talking about casting for the Godfather, Robert Evans famously said "This kid Pacino's five-five and that's in heels."
He can look 5'6", but I've never been sold on it, especially due to how short he looked in the Godfather with a 5'9"-5'10" James Caan, a 5'8"-5'9" Brando and all 3 reportedly wearing lifts. Or this scene from The Devil's Advocate Click Here
Look how short he still looks with 6'1" Keanu Reeves and check out his shoes around 0:19. Large heels, a pretty thick front and possibly lifts. Phenomenal actor, but 5'6" is the most I could ever see and it's possible he was never a full 5'6" and more 5'5" range, though I really think he's lost very little height for a man 74, much like Chuck Norris.

He was however pretty good in Donny Brasco. He always was by nature a supporting player who got lucky when cast in the 'Godfather'. He was a natural for the role of 'third man through the door'.

Jonathan Pryce really looks about 7 inches taller in Glengarry. When he and Pryce speak up close they angle it so it only looks 4-5 inches but when the camera zooms out and shows them from a distance he's clearly got at least 6 inches on him, in fact it looks nearer 7-8. You have Pryce at 6' flat on here which is a little low for his peak IMO but that makes a full 5'6" dubious.

It would have been difficult for him to have worn lifts in the street scene in the Godfather. You could see he was wearing normal shoes in the Sicily scenes and also in the street scene with Diane Keaton, but I noticed they had her walking in a ditch and him further up on the road to make him look taller. But you could see with him walking through the hospital in particular that he was 5'6 max. I think even in the wedding scenes with the ridiculously hot Simonetta Stefanelli that they had him on higher ground to make the height difference look more, but I think she's about 5 ft 4 and shorter anyway, a wild guess though. I once went to the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy and saw the hottest woman I've ever seen in my life hop on the bus to Sorrento and she closely resembled Stefanelli, the sort of girl you'd fall in love with at first site!

PLB said on 9/Mar/13
I might 'tower' over Pacino. But I've never met him. I remember meeting Gregory Peck at Vegas a long time ago. He seemed so small in person.
One of my best friends is 5'4" - exactly a foot shorter than I am. Pacino doesn't look that tall to me. I'll go with Anonymous' estimate of 5'2".
My real objection isn't his stature but everything else. In "Righeous Kill" he played a street cop. He was seventy years old at the time and looked every day of it in spite of all the black hair dye. He was quite contained and effective in the Godfather films but more recently hasn't been so much an actor as an over-actor. He should take a page from Eastwood and age gracefully.
LG69 said on 8/Mar/13
@Shakesniper, you "towered over him" at 5'6"? I laugh when people use the word "towered" to describe a few inches difference. I mean if you were over 6 feet tall then you could say "I towered over him." Anyway, Pacino is no taller than 5'5" today.

Well, Danimal, I'll agree that he can look 5-7ish, and you're not the only one who thinks he's that height, but I strongly believe he's about 5'8". The reason he looks shorter, in my opinion is his poor posture in recent years. If he was really about 5'7", I think he'd look 5'6" range a lot of the time with his posture. When his posture is decent, he looks more like 5'8" to me. I can buy a weak 5'8", but he looks like a guy on the low end of average, not legitimately short to me. When he was younger, I think he was right around 5'9", so about an inch loss at 69 would be normal.

Here's video. Click Here
Pacino still looks pretty much exactly 5'5" there. If he's under 5'5", it's barely, and if he was ever over 5'5", I doubt it was my much. I think he's just an example of a guy who didn't lose much height. I think some might think he has because there are more premiere pictures available today than the 70's and 80's, and I don't think Pacino wears at premieres, but he does wear lifts and heels in many movies, so I think many have the lifted Pacino in movies from the 70's and 80's in mind compared to the recent liftless Pacino at premieres.
The Exorcist said on 10/Oct/12
I think that 5'6" is right for his peak, but he looks about 5'5" nowadays.
said on 28/Sep/12
Pacino still looks about 5'5" just like he always was. He's worn lifts and boots with big heels in countless movies and still rarely above 5'6". He wore lifts in the Godfather and was dwarfed by 5'10" max James Caan(though I heard Caan wore lifts in the movie too). His shoes were suspicious in And Justice For All and he still barely came past 6'3"-6'4" Craig T Nelson's shoulders. He had boots with big heels in Scarface, though he could pull off 5'7" in some scenes next to 6'1" Steven Bauer, but that's when you couldn't see their feet. He wore cowboy boots in Carlito's Way and was still shorter than 5'8" Sean Penn in slippers.
And finally, look at this scene from The Devil's Advocate. Click Here
He only looks about 5'6" at best next to 6'1" keanu Reeves, but you see his shoes in this scene and he has massive heels.
I wouldn't bother with a peak height. I think he's about 5'5" like he's always been. If I gave a peak height and current it'd be 5'5.5" peak and 5'5" current, but I don't see a difference. It doesn't change the fact that Pacino is a living legend. He's made many classic movies, had many diverse roles that he played amazingly well and is the greatest actor ever to me. But probably never a full 5'6", and probably still not under 5'5" even today.

Sam said on 28/Sep/11
Speaking as a 6'5" movie fan, I disagree that (what you seem to be saying) an actors' stature has any bearing on their acting talent or presence. Pacino in the 70s gave several great performances: Serpico, The Godfathers, Dog Day Afternoon, or even more recent films like Glengarry Glen Ross, no one else could have done those roles as well...I'd only agree that in Scarecrow he was miscast. The only Pacino scene where his diminutive size actually put me off a scene was in Heat when he beat up the much more strapping Henry Rollins character.
PatB said on 27/Sep/11
I'm sorry that my remerks about Pacino upset some others, but Pacino is not a very good actor and a lot of that preceeds directly from his height - or lack thereof.
Wallace Shawn is tall enough for the parts he plays. So is Danny DeVito. So is The Rock and so was John Wayne. The problem is that Pacino usually plays tough guys and he looks ridiculous. He was much better in Donnie Brasco where he played an underling. But in Heat and Rightous Kill he plays a lead character whereas he's a natural sidekick.
Pacino became famous in the Godfather films. Remember in that plot he is considered not to be a full blown mobster at first. He's the sweet little kid protected by the large scary mobsters. Then he volunteers to kill Sollozzo. Everyone is amazed. That's the drama. The smallest and youngest of the sons turns out to be the toughest and smartest son and ultimately his father's sucessor. Pacino was nearly perfect for that role and that plot. But alas he's much less than perfect for most other movie roles because of his size. He's a tiny, slight guy and now he's a tiny, slight and old guy.
Watch him in Heat. He chews up the scenery. He's playing the leader of an elite police squad made up of normal size cops. He compensates by continuously overacting. No character in that film refers to him as stumpy, or shorty. They act as if he were a normal size cop. Big city street cops used to have to be six feet tall. A cop his age and his size would be remarked upon by his peers.
Pacino cannot play comedy. He was embarassing in Scarecrow, not funny. He can't play drawing room, or board room either, much less musicals. He has been typecast as an ethnic criminal (or cop) and almost all of his famous roles are within that narrow compass. Even that other short actor who was also typecast as a gangster - James Cagney - had some physicality. If Pacino hit you he looks like he'd break his hand.
Pacino shot to fame playing a small civilized guy who improbably becomes a mob leader. He's been too small for almost every role he's played since.

I did not meet him, however my Boss did, she is 5'5 and they were eye to eye. She was told he looks taller on film because they put lifts in his shoes, this way he was at least even with Diane Keaton. I don't care if the man were to be 5'1, his talent is unmeasurable! Just like Elvis being the King of Rock, and M.J. the king of pop, Al Pacino is the King of acting... hmmm or the Godfather...lol have a good one all!

PatB, what the hell is your problem? Pacino was great in many movies post-Godfather - The Devil's Advocate, Donnie Brasco, Scent of a Woman, Angels in America and most recently You Don't Know Jack - which he just won an emmy and Golden Globe for! So Suck on that...
Back on topic, I say Al is around 5'4 now and 5'6 in his prime...He is very slight built so it makes him look smaller. But it doesn't matter how tall he was/is, he still towers over most men in terms of talent, looks, and charisma:)

PatB, I don't know what you mean by "too slight to be inducted"? Audie Murphy was 5'5" and 110lbs when he enlisted. I don't think he did too badly? He was only the most decorated American soldier of World War II.

Al Pacino has always and will be a 5'5" maximum. Not too sure of him being at 5'7" barefoot though. These days he has yet looked considerably shorter. Well, possibly due to a little shrink. He is diminutive at being only 5'4 1/2" tall.

Strong 5'5 at peak, today certainly a little less.

Pacino is IMHO a pretty bad actor. He can take direction, that was clear in the first two Godfather movies. He was cast as a wormy, dirty junkie in his first movie - "Panic in Needle Park". He was firmly on the path to being a minor ethnic character actor when somehow God smiled on him and he got the lead in the Godfather. Coppola gave him dignity and gravitas. He was never so good again.
He fit in the Godfather cast because the actor they wanted to play Sonny was James Caan. Sonny in the book is a very large scary person - probably 6'3" or so. But Caan was about 5'9" - about a half foot too short. Michael in the book is described as an average sized person - maybe 5'9". But with a 5'9" Sonny they needed a 5'3" Michael actor. Michael in the book was a war hero. Al Pacino is probably to slight to be inducted. I don't remember seeing any guys as small as Pacino when I was in the army.
A good actor is a versatile actor. Consider Kevin Kline. He can play heavy drama - "Sophie's Choice" or comedy - "A Fish Called Wanda". He can play the romantic lead or a supporting part. Hell! he can sing and dance too.
Pacino in contrast can only play ethnic mobsters. Luckily for him ethnic mobster movies became very, very popular. So nowadays we have this tiny overacting seventy year old character actor cavorting with women young enough to be his grandaughter and dukeing it out with large strong young men.
There are no spoofs of Pacino movies - he's ridiculous enough as he is.

5'5" with heels is pushing it but he was certainly not anywhere close to 5'7".

Coppola wanted to cast Pacino in The Godfather. Producer Robert Evans was dead set against it. "A runt will not play Michael," Evans told Coppola. In addition to Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman, James Caan (who stood at an average 5'9") was among those auditioning for the Oscar-nominated role. In Evans' 1994 memoir, The Kid Stays in the Picture, he describes a tense negotiation process involving door-slamming and remarks, such as, "This ain't Mutt and Jeff. This kid Pacino's five five, and that's in heels."
