I saw him in a play when I was in high school in the 1970's called A Matter Of Gravity which starred Katharine Hepburn. He was very tall and thin. Taller than the rest of the cast. About six or seven years later, I was reviewing a movie he produced and attended the premiere. My boss told me to try to interview him. I introduced myself - he was sitting on a sofa in the theatre lobby - he stood up and he was HUGE. He was a very big guy and had gained a lot of weight/muscle since I had seen him onstage. I introduced myself and told him I was a fellow Cornell graduate. He seemed delighted and shook my hand enthusiastically. I then asked if I could interview him very briefly for a local NPR radio station. He immediately stopped smiling, said he had spotted a friend across the room, and walked away without another word.
He seemed to be 6'3" or 6'4".

Christopher Reeve is the PERFECT superman standing at no less than 6'3.5". 6'4" is just about right. A truly wonderful guy. I interviewed Christopher Reeve twice for a period of 2 -3 hours in 1978 right before the movie SUPERMAN opened in NYC , for CANADIAN BROADCASTIN, and I can assuredly tell you, he was a really big guy. I am 6 foot 3 and 1/2 inches and at that time I weighed 190 lbs. He was bigger than I was , I had to look up a bit at him and he was built like a brick s....h....se. He looked a lot bigger in life than he did in the movie,, I wonder some time if in fact he was even bigger than 6 foot 4 inches, and 220. Guy was immense. A perrfect SUPERMAN. He also was a wonderful and kind and generous man. VERY smart and very,very focused. A great guy who at that time had no idea that SUPERMAN was going to change his life. He said to me " ITS JUST A PART, I'M AN ACTOR." I saw his superman suit form superman 1, and I could not possibly fit in them..not length not wide wise...I am 6'2 and weigh 245 pounds. and I tell you his clothes don't fit me..so he cannot have been that tall 6'4..no way..it is like we are talking about a different person.
Sure you got 30 pounds on him. But just because the costume does not "look" big enough to fit him, does not mean it didn't. Its Spandex. Stretchy stuff it is. It was almost painted on, so it had to be a tight fit. The legs may have also stopped further up his shin, as he had on knee high boots.

Whatever costume you are referring to...is probably over 35 years old......and may have never beeen used. Chris was constantly changing wardrobe. It could have been a prop, too. The six foot nonsense about a guy who towerd over everybody--which six footers do not! Google him on the tonight show with Johnny Carson---that will shoot your six foot theory down, very fast. Christopher Reeve is without a second thought 6ft4. His height is mentioned several times in the very first Superman. First of it mentioned is on the rooftop of Lois's home, then twice mentioned in Lex Luthor's cabin study, Miss Teschmacher played by Valerie Perrine reads the daily planet paper out loud, stating he is 6ft4, then Otis looks up at Luthor sitting on the Ladder saying 'He's 6ft4 you know that?'. So i believe only an idiot would say he's not 6ft4, instead of deliberating the facts people talk like they've met Reeve day in day out, look at the pic with Reeve next to Schwarzenegger whom which Arny is measured at 6ft2, you can clearly establish a 2inch gap. Because the continuity was based in the same universe as the Reeve movies they wanted to keep Routh on (pardon the pun) equal footing, thats why they felt the need to boost his Height from 6ft 2.5" to Reeve's heigh of 6ft 4". Still they could have made the soles a little less obvious. Reeve's boots were actually thin soled wrestling boots, that laced up at the back. Ace says on 20/Jun/09

Actaully, Brandon Routh's Superman shoes did not have huge heels. What everyone mistakes for a heel is an emblem that covers that part of the shoe where it meets the heel. bigd says on 2/May/09

Why shouldn't he be 6'4"? why do you HAVE to dispute someones height? Especially from photos? I could pick out 100 photos of me and my dad. He's 6'1" i'm 5'10". It'll vary from picture to picture sometimes we even look the same height - in a picture!

Ridiculous. He was a strong 6'4". His Superman boots had almost no soles, they were just floppy rubber things, whereas 6'2" Brandon Routh wore huge heels on his boots. His kids are giants. His son Matthew was at least a couple inches taller than Obama in a picture I saw of the two of them. What I find interesting is in Superman 1 and 2 did you see the sheer size of the soles on Jack O Hallorans boots? I doubt he was 6 ft 5 because he was shorter than Tony Todd in the BlackFox Made for TV films. Though you can roughly gauge his height by comparing him to Mark Pillow (6ft 3") who played Neuclear Man in Superman IV. In several scenes Reeve clearly had at least an inch on him.
