Well, I think seeing women around his height is actually not that uncommon in some countries like Mexico, India, and many developing countries. However, a 4'9" to 4'10" man is still rare pretty much everywhere besides a few pygmy communities around the world! Of course, I don't have anything against anyone regardless of height, but I am only 5'10" (in the morning). Yet I would probably tower over Devito by a good foot, and he probably wouldn't even be at my shoulder level (more like arm pit height). It would look like me standing next to somebody Ian Whyte (7'1")'s height lol.

I'm about 6'2".5 189cm in normal shoes. Just had a look in passing and on tip toes where I can reach 6'4" in shoes like Hasselhoff mentioned below, a person with a height of 4 ft 10 inches would come up to just below my heart level. The picture below would indicate that Devito is not a bit over this and actually a little shorter, more like 4'9". He has never looked 5 ft even in his prime I think.

I'm not trying to be funny either but I had a serious thought. If either Danny Devito or Gary Coleman would get limb lengthening surgery and wear lifts, I think the fascination would re-awaken their carreers. Danny could pull off 4'9.5"+3"surgery+3"lifts=5'3.5" (basically Michael J. Fox height) and Gary could pull off 4'8"+3"surgery+3"lifts=5'1". Nobody would blame either one of them for the surgery and noone has to know about the lifts. I think they would get alot of role offers just out of fascination.

I am actually 1 inch under 5 foot and I always round it up to 5 foot - it does sound so much better ... yes, I have a height complex :-) - I was just watching a show with Danny DeVito (It's Always Suny In Philadelphia) and - as I always am when I see him in his actng roles - was fascinated by his height andwent on to google it which ought me here. I was astonished to read that he is infact my height. Wow! Now I REALLY have a height complex.. is that how short I really ook? When I saw him standing in a restaurant against people who were stting, I thought he MUST be quite a bi shorter than me. Yikes1 I always knew I was short,now I realise I am practically miniture. I'm 5'2, and I don't look THAT short! Danny Devito always looks really short, especially compared to other people. He must be under 5 foot, I'd say 4'11 atleast. If I was an inch or so under 5 foot I'd most likely say I was 5 foot, round it up. I think that's probably what he does. There's a difference in people's reactions if you say 4 foot something to 5 foot. I think people think aslong as your in the 5 foot range it's not a big thing.

In Relative strangers he was about 3 inches shorter than Kathy Bates who is 5'3" tall barefoot. So 5' is just right. In batman returns Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't exactly tower over him and she's 5'8" tall. As cat woman she wore real high heels so i'd say she stood 6 foot tall with the heels on and even then he didn't look like a dwarf next to her. I think this link will put an end to this controversy. It is a website for Danny's stunt double. His name is Micheal Munoz and he is 4ft 9in. If you click on one of the photos, there is one of Danny and him standing right next to each other, side by side. Sad to say, his stunt is a tad bit taller or at least the same height as Danny. I didnt realize Danny was so tiny. Danny obviously has been shrinking over the years. I think he was possibly 5 feet tall in his prime but he may be only 4ft 8 according to this picture. I think he rounds his height to 5ft becasue its easier and less embarassing. Check it out:

From the shoulder to the tip of someone's head is about a foot. If you watch episodes of spin City you will see top of MJF head is in line with the 6'4 Mayor's shoulder - In the above photograph it is difficult to tell with Danny's hat so we are at 4'8-4'10. Personally I'd half the difference. At 4'9 you are probably within an inch of his actual height - With posture and footwear, and the time of day you are measured, its virtually impossible to guess anyone's height more accurately than that.

I don't think it has anything to do with perception. If he was 5'1" he would be 2" shorter than christina ricci with her heels on and his shoes on cuz she is 5'1", in that pic he looks 5"-6" inches shorter which would make him 3"-4" inches shorter if they were both barefoot (were assuming Christina has 3 inch heels.)therefore 3"-4" inches minus 5'1" leaves you with 4'10" and 4'9" respectfully, if you don't beleive me just look at the pic that rob posted carefully and allow your finger to go from danny's head to christina's head and not the the differance... the top of his head is below her eyes.
