I fully agree, I mean he's just not that big in terms of height. However remember that the camera adds 10 pounds to anybody (so that's 290 pounds if his real weight was 280 by season six of the Sopranos) and if he was put on lifts (which can add, quite discretely, 3 inches and more) then he could give the appearance of someone much bigger than he is.
Some people just look bigger with the same weight and height as others, or less.
Look at mob hitman Richard Kuklinski, he's 6'5 and 300 pounds, whereas Gandolfini is 6'0-6'1 and 280 pounds, but because of his anatomical structure ("big boned") he looks bigger. William says on 5/Aug/07
Gandolfini is definitely not above 6'0, the easiest way to roughly determine height is to look at them in a standard door. A standard door is 6'6, I'm 6'4 and my head scrapes the door frame when I'm in my shoes, but James' just appears big because most Italian men, despite what Colton says, are only 5'8 or 5'9 and Gandolfini's most well known for being on the Sopranos and around other Italians. colton says on 13/Jul/07

the guy who said Italians arent very tall is mistaken. I'm not Italian but I was raised in an Italian family and the men are both tall, avg and below avg height. He's definately underlisted a little bit here. I use the same tailor as James (Joe Camelia), and standing straight AND IN SHOES (which is how he's measured for suits), Joe said he's 6'3. So if you take a good inch off for the shoes, hes got to be anywhere between 6'1.5 and 6'2. Also theres a picture of the two of them together, and he has a solid 7 inches on Joe, who is a shade under 5'7. Just to clarify one thing about the door frames in the US. I don't know where you measured it, but even old and cheap doors are 6'8" or 6'9". Also, the head banging thing is not what it seems to be. I read he was 6'4 somewhere, I know (this isn't too Politically Correct, sorry) but Italians aren't generally that tall (especially those from the south) that being 6'0 you'd stand taller than most Italian men and women, but when he walks through doors he comes about 2 inches short of banging his head (door frames are 6'6). I've heard in 2 or 3 places that Gandolfini was 6 foot 4, if the average doorway is about 6 foot 6 if you watch him come through them he's only 1 or 2 inches off banging his head and that's wish his hunch so saying he's 6'1 is a bit unreasonable.

Maybe it was artie's food that gave him the gas lol. In that episode It was funny when Toney was gasing off and AJ said something like " Whos laying those big ones". I think season 2 and 3 were the best. The last season (6) was off a little, Especially with all the Vito things. I did actaully think last season, Christoher was going to get wacked but It didnt happen. Christopher deserves it when he punched Ben Kingley's girlfreind in the face. I spent a lot of time in the tribeca area and i would often spot michael imperioli (who lives on thomas street). While waiting to cross the street together one day I noticed his head came to about my shoulders. I am 5'8" and if you think of the height differential between him and James on the show, James cannot be more than 5'10"...maybe 5'11" on a REALLY good day. I also had the chance to see Edie Falco both walking down the street in TImes Square when she was performing in The Sideman and more recently when she stood next to me as I was sitting on a bench on the Columbia campus (they were shooting a Sopranos scene). There is an episode in one of the earlier seasons of Sopranos where Tony getts pulled over by Charles S. Dutton. If you freeze frame the shot where Tony hands over the license, the character's height is listed at 6'0.5" which presumably is close to the actor's height.
I don't think Imperioli is much more than 5'7". Neither is Robert Iler. Most of the supporting cast appears to be 5'10" or below. Of the current cast, only Domenic Chianese, who's now in his mid 70s, and the guy who plays Bobby Bacula, appears to be anything close to Gandolfini's height.

I was watching The Sopranos the other night, and Gandolfini towers above most of the cast. I always thought he was at least 6-3, but most reports have him at 6-1. Of course this means that the other folks, such as Michael Imperioli, might be overestimating THEIR TRUE heights!
