He Franco, many have said Chuck was prolly 5'9" in prime, so 1.5" shorter than Bruce makes Lee 5'7.5". Even at 5'7" he could be 5'7.5" in the morning. My suspicion is, when Lee measured himself as in Rob's quote, he must have done it in the morning to read 5'8" at his absolute morning peak height.
Franco said on 5/Jan/07
bruce lee looks 5'7 not 5'7.5 no matter what they wrote or what his biography says. he looks 1.5 full inches shorter than Chuck norris in most pix.
SirCharles said on 30/Dec/06
In Anonymous's pic with Bruce and Tien. Bruce is at least 3 inches shorter than Tien. Tien isn't holding is head up as high.
anonymous said on 19/Dec/06
Also, in that last photo by St. Andrews, in that scene of the movie, Bolo wears sneakers (which probably give 1 inch) while Bruce wears those .25 inch slippers.
St Andrews said on 16/Dec/06
Well, the first photo tells me that the difference is about 1.5" but no less. In the second photo Lee probably has normal shoes and Norris has flat trainers and in the last photo the shot was taken from the side angle of Lee, hence camera favours Lee greatly.

Therefore I still stand with my statement. The difference is about 2'' and definetely more than 1" as stated in this website.
St Andrews said on 14/Dec/06
I had already took all what you mentioned into account, when I said Norris is at least 2 inches taller than Lee. They are on different scales, however you look at it.

It's funny how some people can claim how anyone can be "exactly" shorter or taller by this and that "exact" number when human height can vary by up to an inch during the course of a day? Making height predictions to the closest inch is tough enough, anyone who believes they can accurately guage someone's eight to the exact 1/4" by simply looking at a picture should think twice. I think if bruce were truly in the 5'6" range, he'd sell himself as being 5'7". Selling yourself 2" taller than you really are may work for taller people (Michael Jordan, Hulk Hogan, Andre The Giant, etc...), but wouldn't really be passable for someone of Lee's height ballpark. Even heightmonger Sly Stallone who's probably 5'9" sells himself as only being 5'10" and wouldn't dare go anything beyond (verbally at least, his lifts take him anywhere he wants you to believe)! And btw, Bruce has an open stance in the pic with Robin (who has his legs together) which gives more of a height advantage than you'd think (and who's to say Burt Ward couldn't really be 5'8.5")?
SirCharles said on 11/Dec/06
Actually, in that pic "ROBIN" is at 5'8 and it's pretty obvious Bruce is shorter than him (even though they are not perfectly side-by-side).

The best analysis, is the one I posted with Kareem, James Tien, and Bruce: Click Here

Now James Tien, at 5'10 is wearing chinese loafers that are at most 3/4 inch. Bruce is exactly 4.5 inches shorter than him in that pic. Even if I be nice and assume that James Tien is 5'10.5 (Note that he's never listed at 5'11, so 5'10.5 is probably too high), AND his soles are 1 full inch thick (Which would be more common in gym shoes), then Bruce's height would work out to exactly 5'7. So people who think he was at LEAST 5'7 have it backwards. Bruce is at MOST 5'7.

In that picture, it is best to assume tien at a dead on 5'10 (true height 5'9.75 to 5'10.25. Than use 3/4 inch for Tien's sole estimate. Bruce comes out to 5'6.25 tall.
ninjaturtle said on 8/Dec/06
no way bruce is under 5'7. arias dude you can read all over this site that running or walking poses are the worst to use to judge height comparisons just like your pic. just look on the arnold thread and you'll see how 5'11 prime minister tony blair looked several inches over arnold while they're walking in one photo, where arnie is really 6'+. plus bruce is standing on lower ground and his leg way more bent than van william's. i don't think bruce is a solid 5'8 either, but minimum 5'7. 5'6 is too low. bruce is so close to chuck norris' height in dozens of photos to be only 5'6. i think editor has it spot on.
Brad said on 14/Nov/06
5' 6" was what I remember meeting him at a car show almost 40 years ago in full Kato attire no less. Van Williams was about 6' at Ray Courts show in North Hollywood. Van beats him by about 6" in most master shots. I'm sure the close-ups have Bruce on a box....they did that with Davy Jones on The Monkees.
SirCharles said on 9/Nov/06
If they are standard one inch, then Yes, Bruce is at least exactly 5'7. But I'm pretty sure those are a type of chinese loafers with 1/4-1/2 inch soles. 5'6.5 to 5'7 for Bruce. Of course, Tien could be a little taller than exactly 5'10, but he's probably not over 5'10.5 (otherwise he'd be listed at 5'11).
SirCharles said on 1/Nov/06
Actually, that pictures crooked. But here is a picture with BRUCE LEE, KAREEM ABDUL JABAR, AND 5'10" JAMES TIEN. Comparing Bruce to Tien, you can easily tell that Bruce is under 5'7- Click Here
Arias said on 1/Nov/06
I think I've solved this mystery. Here is an excellent picture of Van williams and Bruce Lee. C'mon now guys!...Even if we assume Van williams was 6ft tall (I've never seen estimates that high for Williams), Bruce wouldn't cut 5'7. Bruce is an easy 6 inches under him......so 5'6 is not only plausible, but likely. Click Here
SirCharles said on 1/Nov/06
Bruce Lee was short. There is excellent clip of him in green hornet, where it's obvious he was under 5'8. 5'7 can be considered, but 5'6-5'7 is definetly more like it. I agree with others that body style, especially on film, can make someone look a lot taller. And I too saw the Bolo yung (5'6)scenes with Bruce, where they look the same height. Bruce also looks about the exact same height as Sammo hung (5'6). With his wife (5'7), there is a couple pictures where you can ignore shoes, and Bruce looks a bit shorter. I think the bolo scenes are the best evidence for 5'6ish.
sf said on 26/Oct/06
K-9 - I have no doubt that Bolo was stronger, but that really doesn't mean much when it comes to martial arts and skill.
Franco said on 25/Oct/06
hey Brad i'm legit 6'4 without shoes i was about 5'8 at 13 y old and when i was 14 i had the worst pain you could ever immagine in my back to the point i couldn't move (almost paralized) and stay in bed for 3 weeks (lots of massage and other crap), when i finally cured and got out of bed i was 6'2, when stay that height until 15 and then at 16 i was 6'3 and stayed like that till 18 that's when i got the last inch. now i'm 27 years old and 6'4. hehe :-D

as for Bruce Lee, that guy was a legend, his expression and moves are unqualed.

1.71 cm look correct for Bruce Lee.
K-9 said on 24/Oct/06
I say Bruce Lee looks pretty tall in his picture. But if he say he 5ft 8 then that is true. I always wondered that which one is stronger. Bolo Yeung or Bruce Lee. I wish that some day I would become strong as them and surpass them.
Dunken said on 10/Oct/06
Bruce Lee had a very lean, muscular physique, it was amazing.

even though my bet is anywhere between 5'7" and 5'8", if you look at some photos, he could easily pass for 5'10:

Think that Bruce used to wear those kind of flat chinese shoes on his movies so he was pretty much as the same height as Norris when they are fighting and Norris was wearing a pair of sneakers that gave him an extra inch over Bruce.
Diamond said on 3/Oct/06
Bruce lee has always looked short. In the bolo scenes you can tell, as with chuck norris. His body style is deceptive, but it would hard to believe him taller than 5'6.5 to 5'7.

he was a big bruce lee fan/hater (yeah its kinda weird), clearly one of the foremost bruce lee 'experts' on the planet, wrote a very controversial book demythicizing (prolly wrong spellin) bruce's legend.....he knocked down bruce throughout the book and it seemed like he had a weird need to chop bruce down a few notches to prove to himself 'how could i have been such a dumb fanboy fool to buy into all the hype' or somethin along those lines......some say it was a good read and had some truths, others a trashy quickie cash-grab....think it was one of the things that got linda lee to make a documentary (which had a cameo from jackie chan) to dispell the alleged 'lies'. itd be interesting to know what this miller guy would think of bruce's height??

Van Williams & the lady Wendy something same show. He said some huge grip on The Green Hornet with judo skills got Lee into a hold and sent him flying like a ball the next second.

I know what you mean trueheight, the one thing that peeves me these days, is people watching digitally enhanced fight-scenes with lots of wires-tricks and most importantly "speed-ramping" (i.e. careful acceleration of certain parts of film to speed up kicks, punches, etc..) to enhance fighting sequences and don't appreciate just how ahead of his time Bruce was. He pretty much *invented* the genre and modern-day fight choreography you see today (compare his fighting back in the day to anything back then in the 60's+70's like the James Bond or Batman+Robin flics, or even the chop-socky flics of the time to see just how lame they were and how much ahead Bruce was). What's even more amazing, is that to this day, I've never seen ANYONE move like Bruce without digital touch-ups, and that's WITH modern-day health science, medicine, etc...

"Say whatever you want. Bruce lee was 5'6"

Maybe in your dreams! :) Every *clear* picture with Chuck Norris and Linda Lee point out Bruce was at least 5'7". All the pics Electric06 are weakly based on 5'6" Bolo, in which Bruce has been shown in several pics to be taller than Bolo, plus most of them were movie shots where the Director may have fudged things to make Bruce appear smaller than Bolo as a manacing villain should be. All "non-movie" pics show Bruce was taller than Bolo. Nobody is saying Bruce was tall, but 5'6" is nonsense.

Sorry to crush your fascination/obsession with a 5'6" Bruce Lee, but even Editor Rob and Glenn agree Bruce was 5'7"+ .. this is reminiscent of the fascinations in the Sly thread from people totally obsessed with with a mini 5'7" Stallone .. but whatever floats your boat man ...

No disrespect, but did you perhaps mean a FOOT advantage (a meter is 3.33 feet)! Kareem ain't The Hulk, ye know! :) Well, considering Kareem's even a foot taller than a 6-footer, it's hardly surprising .. guesstimating with someone that tall makes the inexact science of height measurement even trickier ...

Mr. Electric06:

"Look on the Internet. Find somewhere where Bolo ISN'T listed as 5'6."

OK, I did check him out and you are indeed correct - most places do list Bolo as 5'6"/168cm.

"Why would I prefer to believe that the latter types of pictures are more accurate representations of the height discrepency between the two, even if fewer? Because of the pictures with Bolo and Bruce."

But I'll fully disagree with you here. If anything, the pics of Bolo and Bruce are the WORST to use. Not only are they both in different footwear, but the camera angles used aren't eye-level with a possibility of tilting in many of them. I think the Bruce Lee + Chuck Norris ones are much better, they were standing completely side-side touch eachother in most of them, plus the camera was much less distorted because they were taken eye-level, e.g.
Furthermore, there were a whole series of them, consistently supporting that Bruce was nearly the same height as 5'8.5" Chuck Norris.

Also, have you considered the possibility that the Director of ETD *WANTED* to exaggerate Bolo's height on film to make him appearing as a bigger and more menacing villain? This is a common practice in film-making. Especially a villain that SHOULD appear larger than the main hero/protagonist (Lee)? He most likely very consciously ENSURED that all his shots had Bolo appearing AT LEAST taller than Bruce on film. Directors have a whole bag full of tricks from film-making literature to choose from for achieving this illusion, many being camera tricks such as camera-tilting.

For that reason, the candid "non-movie" photos are probably more accurate, and that's probably what accounts for:
"Camera-tilting" IS a possibility and I won't totally rule that out, but then you can use that to argue against the validity of ANY photo taken period.

If Bolo is indeed 5'6" and anyone can convincingly show me Bruce and him were the same height, I'll be the first to admit that Bruce was below 5'7". But the two pics above, not mention several more convincing ones listed below with Chuck Norris has me convinced that Bruce was indeed 5'7.5" (perhaps even 5'8" "morning" height), just as Editor has speculated.

and Rob2, I never said you are a liar; what I DID insinuate however, is you can offer no citation for your claims. a website or name of the video of that interview would certainly help tremendously as I already own about 30 different Lee biographies on DVD and about 18 Lee Biography books(including the one by Linda both 1st and 2nd editions)

I'd also like to point out that Linda Lee Caldwell is the one who supervised the production of "Dragon: A Bruce Lee Story"; While its a admirable film, its only about 10% factually correct. Besides Bruce being of Chinese heritage, everything else in that film is skewed.

My2Cents said on 11/May/06
OK, so Chuck makes Bruce tall and Bolo makes Bruce short. We need a tie-breaker, with Bruce standing right next to someone who we're 100% we know the height of (good luck!) and I don't mean Bruce's second-cousin's best-friend's wife's son or whatever. :)

I'm still not 100% convinced about Bolo's exact height and hope someone could provide a clear source. We've heard it could be anywhere from 5'6" to 5'10". But consider he was really only 5'6" and Bruce had only about 0.5" on him. Then Bruce would have a regular height of 5'6.5" and perhaps a "morning height" of 5'7" to 5'7.5". I can live with that, but I'd go NO LOWER. Like someone mentioned way back, Bruce IS short regardless the outcome of this debate, but NOT "Jet Li" short.

And consider the possibility that Bolo was perhaps actually 5'6.5", then that'd totally match most guesstimates of Bruce being around 5'7" or a tad more.

This is the end of the scene where Bolo fights Saxon. If you pay attention throughout the movie, you can see that BOLO and every single extra was wearing these type of shoes. Im not sure exactly what these type of shoes are called, but it is clear to me that the soles on them are well less than the standard 1-1.25 inch shoe. My sister has a pair of shoes like these that measure .6 inches.

Ok, I was assuming that their stances were similar, which is wrong. I also had a strong assumption that Bolo had a certain shoe advantage because under a minute before that frame that I captured I saw this..........

(1:25.32 in ETD - Click Here),

however, because Bolo is farther back I thought it was OK to disregard MOST of whatever that advantage was.

Thus, I was actually concluding by saying "they are the same height", that they are 'very similar' in height (within .5 inch or so). And the idea that Bolo was actually a little taller, isn't really what I agree with. If anything, Bruce looks .5 taller than Bolo.

My2Cents says on 11/May/06

I agree, that's a terrible picture.

"the best side-side photos to compare Bruce against, are the ones taken with Chuck Norris, which show Bruce is clearly almost the same height as 5'8.5" Chuck, no more than an inch shorter, matches the Editor's guesstimate spot-on."

I agree that in a most pictures, in 2 that you posted, Norris looks but .5 inches taller than Bruce. Their are pictures, however, where Norris looks 1.5 inches taller (shoes accounted for/but lifts unknown):

Click Here (Even with a 2 inch elevation, Norris would still have an inch advantage when his head is straigthened.)

Why would I prefer to believe that the latter types of pictures are more accurate representations of the height discrepency between the two, even if fewer? Because of the pictures with Bolo and Bruce.

If that image can be used (without feet showing), then this one could be used to argue that Bruce is a good 2 or 3 inches over Bolo:

With D. Ray Morton's pic:

Bolo is way closer to the camear/foreground than Bruce and the camera is way below waist-level, which would accentuate any height distortions even further when looking "up" at standing subjects (not to mention that Bruce is wearing the flat slippers).

one last thing Electrico, I wish you all the luck in trying to get BL's height downgraded. I'll be away from THIS board for a while, just not used to someone arguing so childishly. But remember, editor doesn't change heights on a whim; used to in the early days but thanks to contributors like Glenn and Mr.R, this site has taken a more serious and objective tone

My little *outburst* was directed at Rob2 who actually stated that Robert Lee is actually a 5'5 man w/ a height complex so he says his bro is 5'8 so he can come off as 5'7. Besides not knowning the guy at all(he's only appeared in ONE bruce doc outta the hudreds out there) he's spouting these really vile and twisted ideas and not providing a shred of evidence.

"this is definately the best shot..." --by who's standards? certainly not consensus b/c i disagree wholeheartedly

I know sneakers are around 1.5(goes for practically all) b/c I've actually MEASURED THEM! surprise you? not as hard as it sounds. B-ball shoes usually have 1.75-2.00in. Rhetorical questions are useless; do YOU think I measured Bolo's shoes??? I think the answer's obvious. So i'm using the next best thing, my father's addidas from the early 80s and my chinese slip-ons. NOW then, plz tell me what Cruise and Chan have to do w/ the BRUCE LEE msg board??? they've never taken pics together(at least that is released to the public). I do stand by my 5'6 claim for Inosanto; i was 14 and 5'7 at the time but by now we both know how inaccurate we humans are at judging height right? just visit the Cruise board, you get sightings anywhere from 5'10 to 5'4. Not NEARLY as bad as a 1.5in discrepancy for Inosanto is it now?

Fact is, neither you or I knew Bruce Lee. Unfortunately Glenn didn't either. So we *can't* make sweeping statements like "this is the best shot of..." can we? agreed?

Now, Rob2, still waiting for documentation on the Linda Lee height claims

Dan Insonato is NOT 5'6. I've met the guy twice at JKD conventions. Im 5'7-solid and it is hard to tell a 5'6 person being shorter than me - but Insonato was clearly shorter- (maybe 5'4 1/2, jhoon rhee/Yip man height). Bruce MIGHT have been in the 5'6 range at his peak but I personally trust his 5'7 quote. The thing with Bruce is that he was so lean, he can look taller from a distance. Another thing is that flat-sole shoes often can make a person look taller because it makes their legs look longer.

Trueheight: "electrico/photoshop master, notice the shoe difference??? Lee wore those same .25in slip-ons for ALL of his film roles. Norris in Return, Saxon, Kelly and Yang Tze all wore 1.5 sneakers"

NO. What the hell makes you think those shoes have 1.5 inch soles?! What a pathetic fabrication. Even a pair of size 14 Air Jordan's won't have 1.5 inch soles. .75 inch would be a better 'guess' considering the style of the shoe and how much Bolo had to move around. Please provide evidence of 1.5 inch soles for BOLO.

Trueheight: "NOrris w/ 1.5in addidas and Lee in .25 slip ons (in RETURN OF THE DRAGON)".

First, you have to again provide evidence for 1.5 inch soles for Norris. Second, and sufficent to my argument for Lee in itself, even if Norris had 2 INCH SOLES, Lee would still be 1.5 inches shorter than Norris after Norris STOOD UP STRAIGHT.
Have you bothered to look at the picture with WALL, NORRIS, LEE and other identified men on the set of ROTD? (You posted it, didn't you?)

thanks rob, i think we are the only 2 voice of reason here on this site. i mean it's not hard to figure out, if jackie chan looks short in asian films and borderline dwarf in american films, chances are good that he's probably not 5-8, which is only 1 inch below average american male height of 5-9. unless all the hong kong actors that appear in films with chan are all 5-10 and over, which i highly doubt. bruce lee's charisma sometimes masks his lack of height, but if watch his film and look purely at his height in comparison to other asian actors of his day, he's still shorter than most of the goons that he beats up in his movies. standing next to chuck norris, he looked noticeably shorter and skinnier in return of the dragon. i m being very generous when i say he looked about 3 inches shorter, honestly i thought he looked 4 - 5 inches shorter, which would make bruce 5-4 to 5-5ish, but i can accept 5-6.

btw, thanks for advice but i am ok being LONE for now.
30 something and no girlfriend said on 3/May/06
electric06, great analysis but I would quibble about chuck norris' height. in return of the dragon, he looked about 2.5 inches taller than bruce lee, there can be no mistake because in the last battle scene both of them are barefooted. i think norris is more like 5.8 1/2 even and bruce about 5-6 or 5-5.75.

also, jackie and sammo's heights are a bit off. sammo's about 5-4+, jackie barely 5-6 i think.

The picture is crooked, and it's in Bruce's favor. I fixed it up with a photoeditor and bruce and bolo are indeed the same height. Ill post it a bit later.
Electric06 said on 2/May/06
Yeah, I don't really think bruce was in the 5'5 range though. Bolo seems like he could be 5'5 and 1/2 - 5'6. Chan, surprisingly really can be 5'6 (I always thought he was 5'6 but I had weak evidence until I reconsidered some pics posted with Chan + Erwin Moses). Bruce always looks a good 5'6-5'7, but it's hard to see Bruce Lee being a solid 5'7 (anything like 5'7.5 seems a bit too much and 5'8 is ridiculous). And it's just as hard to see him as being too much under 5'6. Here is my breakdown:

CELEB NAME MAX/MIN TRUE BAREFOOT STANDING AVERAGE HEIGHT ESTIMATES

Here is a picture from Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee and Sammo Hung. Sammo Hung is often listed at 5'7 but his official site (now under reconstruction)had listed him as 5'6 (in the 70's). The two look very near the same height, but be cautious because Sammo has his neck bent forward a little bit in this photo. Personally, I think Sammo would have a small, but significant (.5-.75 inch), edge over bruce if his neck was straightend.

I saw this picture too, and I'll make sure to post it sometime later. Bruce Lee's eyes are on line with John Saxton's throat in this shot. This picture really gives it away. Rob said on 22/Apr/06
You are absolutely right Glenn, I haven't met any of the people in the flesh but I still think you can judge heights by looking at people next to others on TV or movies. In the case of Bruce Lee his wife looked taller than him and stated he was 5'6" which is what I believe he looks. Then you read 5'7" then 5'7.5" and finally when he wrote his own measurements down 5'8", tell me that is not way over the top? Okay, I suppose 5'7" could be acceptable. In the case of Jackie Chan I know you have met him and I have alot of respect for your height judgement from what you have estimated from celebs you have been photographed with, I have tried to see him as 5'8.5" for that reason but he just doesn't look it to me when he is with others on the films and seeing photos of him next to people of 6ft plus only makes him look shorter. In the case of Lou Reed I have always heard he was 5'5" and to me he always looked it. This is the first time I have seen him as 5'8" and he is in his sixties! Suspicious don't you think? Finally, Ryan Seacrest, well Glen do me one favour and watch just one episode of American Idol and tell me then he is over 5'7". Ironically(Like Jason Priestley) the guy was saying he was 5'9" until one female contestant who was 5'9" remarked on how short he was when he said he was from California she said she wouldn't date anyone from there if they were as short as him, however, in the case of Seacrest I am hoping that you will settle the dispute for us Glen by being photographed with him some time in the future. You are right though, in retrospect my previous comments probably seemed rather arrogant considering I have never even seen any of them off of the screen and I do empathize with your views because you have met Chan so perhaps I am completely wrong, I know if you would have thought him shorter you would have said so. Anyway sorry for the long tedious comment and any previous that may have been untoward. I think the debates on eleb heights are great and that Editor Rob does a great job and on a positive note Glen, your photos and comments on other celebs have helped settle alot of disputes in my favour so I appreciate that.

its always bad angles around here ;-0

here is a bad angle Dwayne Duncan.

take 2mm off for wade hair and they are very close in height...but then bad angle I guess? I could say the same about the first Dwayne picture...I still think with Mike Irvin he looks near 6ft 4...but then, what if MCD's posture isn't as good or he has 2cm shoes and the other guy has 3cm, or the road isn't level and one guy is on a part that's 1cm more than the other...

but yes, I can see many photos were 6ft 4 on the nose could be his height, but 6ft 3...hmmm, maybe Duncan should do a Steve McQueen and challenge anyone to measure him under 6ft 3.5!

whoa, whoa here.Rob2,with all due respect.have you met any of these people you mentioned? Lou reed can look 5-9,5-10, 15 years ago.now 5-8.you might be right on some things, but your going a little far here, being you probably met no celebrties,or at least those mentioned.i have no idea how those Lou Reed 5-4 stories came up,which is what Im guessing you mean.now your dreaming.

well how tall do you think forrest is editor rob? he's not a tall guy you know. since we know duncan is about 6-2.5, forrest is probably right around 6 feet, provided duncan wasn't wearing lifts of course, which apparently he does from time to time, and it worked since it fooled editor rob.

or listing michael clarke duncan at 6-4.75, the dude is barely 6-2!

well its 4.5...for the moment. Give it another year and he might be down to 6ft 4, maybe...These things take a long time you know.

You could always go and try to get him down to 6ft 2 on another site...there's only one trigger finger on this site though. It is hovering over 6ft 4...but 6ft 2, You also want Forest Whitaker down to 6ft aswell?
Lone said on 19/Apr/06
I totally agree with Rob. Bruce Lee is 5-6, and Chuck Norris is around 5-9. If any of you has seen Return of the Dragon, you know what I mean, Chuck looks taller and stockier than Bruce, at least 3" height difference.

If I had to bet his height to a ridiculosly accurate figure, i would say he would average 5'7, dead on.

Maybe that explains why Saxon looked 5-9 when I met him,not the 5-11 he is sometimes mentioned as.maybe Bruce was 5-6.wow.you learn something everyday.and Cruise is the same height as me as well in the site.except Tom and I really are that height.or Tom and Bruce are 5-7.I bounce back from 5-7.25 to 5-8,depending on part of the day.

I saw one of the pictures that are posted below that has John saxton and bruce standing together. it was in my enter the dragon dvd. The only difference between the picture you see below and the picture on my dvd is that saxton is standing very straight and you can tell that he is way taller than bruce. i mean even disregarding the fact that saxton has shoes on, he is much, much taller. I think 5'6 is more like it, Rob.
Electric06 said on 11/Apr/06
Another thing that's interesting is that Robert Lee says, "Bruce was an inch taller than I am", but gives no indication as to when. Bruce may have been an inch taller when Robert was 16. Robert could have since than exceeded Bruce's 5'6 adult height and grown to 5'7, thus, Robert incorrectly figures today that Bruce must have been 5'8.
Electric06 said on 11/Apr/06
Sammo Hung and Bruce Lee are about the same height in Enter the Dragon. Look at the beggining and end of the fight seen where they bow. His official site, now being reconstructed, had him listed at 5'6 and 95-98kg (and yes this data is from the 70's). That means Bruce Lee was around 5'6-5'7 in his prime. No way Lee was 5'8. Chuck Norris is 5'8(max). This also means John Saxon was 5'9-5'10 back than (not 5'10)and today he's probably just a little under 5'9. Bruce usually notes his height at 5'7.5" from what I've seen. But, we can't be sure if this includes shoes, is a morning height, or possibly just down-right exaggeration, as is so common. In the picture at the bottom, bruce would be 2 inches shorter than Chuck Norris (deducting standard 1 inch shoes for Norris). Wall would be a good 5'9 (deducting his 1 inch shoes). The other guys in the picture I don't know about. Click Here

I read a book that Bruce Lee wrote called the "Art of Expressing the Human Body" and there is a page where he describes himself as being 5'7.5". So why are you guys putting him a little higher. Just curious, It's easy to see him upgrade himself, but I think it's rare for anyone to downgrade their own height.
Meathead320 said on 9/Apr/06
I just want to say two things.

1). The difference between 5'7.5" and 5'8" is only a half inch. The spine will decompress at night giving you more than this in the morning, sometimes a full inch taller durring the first couple hours of the day. That being the case, .5" is splitting hairs. I will not jump down a guys throat for padding his height by half an inch.

2). If Bruce Lee told me he was 7 foot I still would not argue with him. LOL

Saxon has aged alot since then, he looked elderly in the Black Christmas DVD interview. KungFu, some of your points are valid because Bruce does look small in many pics w/ caucasians but average to tallish in pics w/ Cantonese. Northern Chinese ppl tend to average about 10cm taller than Southern such as the Cantonese

If Norris is 5'8.5, Lee is AT LEAST if not more than 5'7.5. Hell, Norris looks even 5'10 nowadays

No, i'm not telling you that Little measured Bruce; neither am I telling you that it didn't happen; how the heck do we know?

'He either asked Bruce or eyeballed it himself. Both are unreliable sources of height estimate.' -KungFu

yea and we're supposed to believe your "willing to bet" and "Bruce just looks short" is real objective.

here are some pics:

bruce sportin his platforms. picture is tilted a few degrees. Bruce would be Saxon's height of 5'11 including shoes if he straightened out. 5'11 minus 3in heals equals just under 5'8

Again Saxon and Wall in the foreground w/ Bruce looking very much his 5'7.5 height against 5'10 Wall and Saxon

Lee w/ 5'10 Wall and 5'8 Norris; all seems to add up huh?

here's what I'm talking about. Norris has 1.5in on Lee because he has 1.5in adidads trainers and Lee has .25 kungfu slipons(not really kungfu, alot Chinese ppl wear them), Wall in dress shoes along w/ other unidentified men.

Not trying to argue with you; these pics all add up if you think about them. They tend to support the consensus that Lee was between 5'7 and 5'8. He looks short but not Jet Li short.

trueheight said on 5/Apr/06
Well, Kungfu, You're 'willing to bet' isn't good enough to merit consideration. Please show me the source in which Jhoon Rhee is 5'4, and not some second rate source plz. Also please add the link for the definitve height for Yip Man. preferably from a book or media source not from second hand accounts. Second hand accounds don't count for much do they? you said so yourself

Have you visited the Norris page? He's .5in taller than Bruce at the most. Ever see Return of the Dragon??? guess not b/c Norris has 1.5in trainers while Lee is wearing .25in kungfu slip ons and Norris is barely in inch taller. Your pic w/ Norris proves nothing, where's the lean? If anything I can spot some pretty hefty boots on Norris. And I'm sorry, like the 'I'm willing to bet' qualifier, your 'Bruce just looks short' just doesn't cut it. Go to Paula Abdul's page and see how she looks like Vern Troyer compared to Shaq. You've never met BL, neither have I so who are we to stray from consensus opinion? Even James Coburn has stated that BL was 5'7 - 5'8 in the Doc that appears on Enter The Dragon the special edition DVD release.

DanE84, if you say so, but plz provide documentation like i requested from Kungfu, or you can do one better and follow Glenn's example by providing a pic of you standing next to Shih Kien and staring down his 5'2" frame. No matter how tall he was, its a well know fact that he wore lifts on that film.

Kung Fu, that 1st pic of Saxon you provided actually bolsters the consensus. He's standing in front of Bruce so well take about .5in. Bruce has his legs further apart which is another .5in. He appears about 3.5in shorter than Saxon in that pic(can you verify this guestimate rob?), which would make him 5'6.5 IN THAT PIC. But add the 1 inch and he stands 5'7.5 square.

Dan Inosanto: 5'6
Taky Kimura: 5'5

Look for photos w/ these guys, Bruce is always taller. Plus his brother stated 5'8; he would know more than us, dontcha think?
DanE84 said on 3/Apr/06
No way this guy was that tall! They probably just used fancy camera angles and lifts to make him look taller. Look at the movie Enter the Dragon. Han, the bad guy, is 5'2 in real life. Tell me that Bruce was past 5/5 in real life.
King-fu said on 3/Apr/06
P.s That supposed "candid" pic with Bolo and Bruce....I'm willing to bet Bruce is in the middle of taking a step. Bruce and Bolo 'probably' aren't more than an inch apart.
King-fu said on 3/Apr/06
I'm not convinced that all photographic evidence isn't ideal for making such extrapolations. In fact, I'm sure it's better than what people say here and there. I know your not telling me "John Little's" source for his quote is pushing Bruce up against a wall and marking his height. He either asked Bruce or eyeballed it himself. Both are unreliable sources of height estimate.
Generally, the pictures that I consider valid, and tend to post, include individual's of reference positioned similar distances from the camera as the subject in question. I also take into account camera angle of the shot when making comparisons, note the shoes, stance, and posture.
For Bruce Lee, it's clear his stature was under 170. Although it only takes photographic evidence to conclude this, there are supplementary inconsistencies with the 5'7 estimate. For example, the Jump Suit used in Game of Death was made for individuals under 5'7, Bruce's own wife quoted in a San Fransisco article that his height was 5'6 and she mentioned his concern over this, Linda Lee rarely wore heels or thicker soled shoes in public, ect.
Here is a list of photographs that provide evidence of this:
Bruce, Kareem (7ft 2in), and James Tien
an excellent extrapolation is provided below Click Here
Bruce and 5'4 Jhoon Rhee (assuming Rhee has 1 inch + from soles)
Bruce and Chuck (Chuck w/slight lean, = soles, and assumed an optimistic 5'8.5)
Chuck is 1.5-2 taller than bruce.

If BL was 5'6 that would basically make Yang Tze(Bolo Yueng) about 5'4, and he certainly didn't look 5'4 next to 5'9 Jean Claude Van Damme in Bloodsport. So, Bruce Lee was 5'7.5. BTW, 'TheMan': the Game of Death(actually called BL: A Warrior's Journey) DVD actually stated Lee was 5'7.5, and this film was produced/written/directed by John Little a close Lee family friend
trueheight said on 3/Apr/06
Rob has a good collection of Norris/Lee pics. So what 'kunfu' is basically saying is that Lee must have worn lifts in all those pics which is obviously untrue, if anyone was wearing lifts, it would be Norris. Bruce did however wear platform shoes from time to time in public appearances, but that should not be surprising given their popularity w/ men in the 70s
trueheight said on 3/Apr/06
wow. its an indisputable fact that he was 5'7.5, MEASURED which is 10x better than any candid pic. I too can post a pic in which Lee looks 2in taller than Sammo Hung or another where he looks exactly the same as 5'8.5 Chuck Norris or another in which he was exactly Jackie Chan's height, but why bother when candid pics are so OFF? By off, I mean the only kind of pic that *unquivocally* can validated someone's height is a police line up. Everyone who has ever met Lee has stated he was 5'7 - 5'8, so who are WE to say he is now 5'6? Van Lee wore lifts in the GHornet, dunno for sure but he never looked 5'10, more like 6'0. John Little, the foremost BL expert(who as met him) and is close w/ his family to this day has always stated BL was 5'7.5.

I should be more specific. I DID take into account bruce lee's somewhat wider stance. It would'nt lose him more than .5 inch MAX- a .25 inch is more like it , NOT A FULL INCH- Don't believe it, try it at home!. And I ignored Saxon's shoe advantage, because he was hunched over quite a bit - In contrast to Saxon, Bruce lee shows excellent upper body posture in this photograph. Even when you add the .5 inch for Bruce's stance, Bruce would come up short of 5'7. Here is one of Bruce and Van williams (left).Click Here Again bruce looks a under 5'7 when comparing to the 5'10 williams.

Editor Rob
Williams was 4 inches shorter than Adam West? Speaking of Saxon in pics he looks to have shrunk a fair inches himself!

Kung- Fu - Measure your height with heels together, then open your legs as Bruce has in the picture - You'll drop an inch
King-fu said on 28/Mar/06
*ROB CHECK THIS OUT, and tell me what you think* If the regular distance between your eye and your lips is three inches (according to yourself). Then why is the supposed 5'7" Bruce Lee's eye level at 5'10" John Saxon's CHIN LEVEL!! Bruce's EYE LEVEL would have to be at SAXON'S LIP LEVEL for Bruce to be 5'7" tall. This pic makes me want to push him down to the 5'6 range.

This is so ridiculous arguing over a half or quarter of an inch. Take a step back people. If you're 5'7.5" or 5'7.75, and someone asks your height, you might as well round up to 5'8", because most folks dont' quote their height to half and quarter inches, and the DMV, passports, and whatnot don't want to hear it!
Borisyotr said on 10/Mar/06
I don't trust it when people report their own height. I've read somewhere that it's very common for people (especially men) to exaggerate their own height by anywhere from 1 to 2 inches. (my dad still thinks he's 6ft when he's barely 5'10). And for Lee I've seen a 5'7 and 1/2 estimate more often than anything. That is definetely close enough to 5'8, so it is understandable how he could have simply rounded himself up. But there is not guarantee that 5'7 1/2 isn't a morning height. Personally, I don't think he could have ever been taller than mid-5'7. And I don't believe if he was under 5'7. If he was, it couldn't have been by much at all.
Glenn said on 8/Mar/06

I saw a useful picture of him with Kareem Abdul Jabbar, side by side, and I worked out some numbers. Knowing Kareem is about 7'2" tall, using a simple proportion, the calculations for Bruce indeed indicate a height between 5'6" and 5'7". I bet the 67.5 inches is a morning estimate. Even in pictures with his wife, Lee often looks a bit shorter than her (Linda Lee stands 5'7")........
zadeh79 said on 27/Feb/06
I was taking screenshots of Enter the Dragon. In one scene Bruce Lee is right next to Bolo Yeung, with similar posture. Bolo Yeung is listed everywhere, without discrepencies, at 5'6" (so I'm assuming he's almost never much past the 5'6.5 mark, because 5'7"(as a product of commonly rounding) isn't cited 'anywhere' I've looked - and believe me it would be. The possiblility is still open, however, that Bolo might be a tad 'less' than 5'6"). It could inferred safely, Bruce is a MAXIMUM of 1/2 inch taller in the screenshot(I took into account both of their distances from camera (Bolo a little farther back), shoes - Bolo w/ 1/2 inch thicker soles, and hairstyle. Based on this, and Bruce's own measure of 5'7.5' and the rarer 5'8 for BL, I would pin Lee's MAX afternoon - evening height (or MAXIMUM MINIMUM HEIGHT) at 5'6.75 - a bit under 170cm. Bruce's 5'7.5 is likely a '**rounded up**' optimistic estimate from morning measurements that he could have easily attained within a few hours of waking up or at a time of day when his back and leg muscles, and skeletal structure hadn't endured much stress for a couple of hours. Finally, I think the ridiculous few 5'8" figures are visual "guesstimations" which probably just didn't take into account things like hairstyle and footwear. In return of the dragon, Norris at 5'8-5'9, 'clearly' has a height advantage over bruce.

Lee himself always used to say" to express oneself honestly, now that is hard to do!" I think Lee was 100% honest with his height due to his personal nature and the fact he was asked that question in an interview. If we could use him as a rule of thumb for all actors heights, we would have an almost accurate height of each person. But his photos with other actors is very limited.
