My worst job? Cab driver in New York. It almost crippled me. There are no 6ft 4in cabbies in New York.
I’m probably be the best casting for the more recent years, but I wouldn’t mind Ryan Gosling as my younger self – he’s just not quite tall enough. I’m 6ft 4in.

I'm 6-4 and he [Winston Churchill] was about 5-7 and both of us are about 225 pounds. We couldn't have been more different.
-- LA Times, 2017
On account of my height I had always tended to unconsciously slouch to the eye level of whomever I was acting with. This question-mark posture constricted not just my body but my voice as well. In movement class, I learned to straighten my spine and stand up to my full height, to vocally stand and deliver.

I would put Lithgow at a solid 6'4 peak. If he fell below it would be barely anything imo. Maybe a tiny fraction. In that photo with Conan not so long ago he's clearly leaning inwards, with Conan having camera advantage.

@Rob is under 6'3 arguable today lithgow's nearly 80.

Still looks close to 6ft 3. If he is under it, not by much.

At his peak I go with solid enough 6ft 4 for John.

His sons look shorter, Ian the taller out of the two.

I haven't seen much of John from 80's and 90's, but with Denzel in that pic Rob posted and given that he looked near 6'4 around age 60 it's not hard to believe he possibly was a bit over 6'4 in his prime. When not slouching he still looked over 6'3 last I checked with Will Ferrell a few years ago. He's 75 now though so he might have shrunk some more since then.

A lot of pro athletes and other celebs also live in Florida, even if their teams that they play for aren't located there. I guess the absence of income tax is a big reason. Some of the wealthiest and most exclusive communities in US are located there. A lot of people think it's mostly LA and Hollywood, but not necessarily.

this thread went off course, so here is a Lithgow and James Garner. If anybody wants to watch Glitter Dome somebody uploaded it on youtube.

@Hong
Yeah, John not looking so tall with Affleck. Not the best angle though. You would estimate that Lithgow would've lost height by that age anyway but as we have discussed on the Eastwood page, aside from permanent height loss, declined posture contributes to the impression of height loss. If Clint and Lithgow straightened up more for some pics they would gain some back IMO.

@Canson, sorry for belated response, I'm roughly 6'4.75", when people ask I usually say "about 6'5"" or "just under 6'5"". With commentors like Lanky and Christian around, I wouldn't stand out as much as I usually do!

I found a couple of interesting clips involving Lithgow and THE HOFF from 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Lithgow is barefoot in the first clip. As such, IMO, Hasselhoff clearly stands that bit taller but also fair to note HOFF is wearing runners with some reasonable heel. In the second clip Lithgow is wearing shoes which I suspect are regular heel. IMO, in the second clip, there's almost nothing to choose between them but with a gun to the head, maybe I would give HOFF the slightest edge. Finally, Lithgow had to be at least in his very early 50s with some possible height loss while HOFF would've been at least mid 40s. Hard to believe only 7 years diff. between them.

Not many scenes together with Goldblum but in still Jeff may have a small edge on John at their peaks. Very similar comparative height as with Goldblum in the 80s with Ed Begley Jr.
Tall In The Saddle said on 30/Sep/20
Interesting. On screen, Lithgow always appeared to me as a very naturally big, solid guy but not necessarily muscular or athletic. My first awareness of him was from THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP in which, for the character, he also wore high heels for some extra inches! LOL. Seems like a genuinely nice guy in interviews so it's good to hear that he is same in real life.
Apparently he appeared in the movie THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKEROO BANZAI which also starred Jeff Golblum. I've never seen it and can't say if they shared any worthwhile scenes together.
Tall Sam said on 28/Sep/20
Crossed paths with Lithgow maybe 17 years ago at Tanglewood, he looked around 6'4" but no higher, I was full height in my early 20s and somewhat taller. He was broader shouldered and almost muscley in person than you'd think from on screen and seemed to be a friendly guy.

Lithgow and Begley Click Here

Begley generally looked about .25" to .5" shorter than Jeff Goldblum. A younger photo of Lithgow and Begley Jr. would be preferable to avert the question of potential height loss on either or both men's parts. As it is, I haven't seen Goldblum ever hold any greater advantage over Begley than the advantage that Lithgow is holding in the above pic. Lithgow def. at least a good 6'4" and a bit, like Goldblum and head to head, could have the slightest advantage over Jeff - as the previous linked photos might also suggest.
Tall In The Saddle said on 12/Feb/20
While a lot of celebrities are obviously prone to exaggeration, one shouldn't be predisposed to over analysis and shaving off fractions of an inch for no good reason.

Lithgow, properly cross referenced, is as solid a 6'4" as one can get.

Why equivocate on any less?

There is a pic online of Lithgow in a group pic with Neeson and Lithgow does appear taller. It's been mentioned but ignored. Of course postures will be called into question but in equal proportion neither man is standing perfect and even if they were it's reasonably projected that Neeson would not stand taller than Lithgow. Their postures as is are acceptable.

There are also avail. pics of Lithgow and Jeff Goldblum. In one pic, except for the horizontal being off by about 10-15 deg. to the left, the shot is front on and if you manually correct they are at least equal with an argument for Lithgow having a slight edge. The other pic has both men leaning equally into a fan and again Lithgow appears taller.

Of course the standard entry angle on Conan favours the guest but one can still reasonably estimate the guest's advantage over Conan and their relative advantage margins over Conan . As compared to Lithgow, I don't see either Neeson or Hasselhoff looking relatively taller than Conan at all.

Due respect to the man but Lithgow has a vey large head, bigger than even Conan's. While that will lend itself literally to his overall height it will also lend to the illusion of him not looking quite as tall as he is. By comparison, Neeson's head is notably smaller and his body more svelte and if you judge them in stand alone shots, Neeson gives off a taller impression.

Put whatever value on it you want but O'Brien did say that when he first met Lithgow he didn't realise how big he was. That lead to the question of his height and Lithgow's answer of 6'4".

Also, both Neeson and Hasselhoff stood expressly straight to measure off against Conan which Lithgow never did but even so, Lithgow comfortably held the same adv. margin on the initial greeting.

I think it's fair to assume that these guys aren't so obsessively disposed to height and in fact perhaps stood a bit taller than 6'4", say 6'4.25" or so but happy to go with 6'4". In the real world, let alone a minute and unperceivable 1/8th of an inch, Neeson's "wee bit" might equate to a minimum .25" but in his eyes still not worth an exact quantification. They all appeared an arguable 1" taller than O'Brien.

And lastly, don't forget that Lithgow appeared to stand his listed height relative to John Cleese.

I think overall a normal flat 6ft4 is best suited for Lithgow, not weak or strong

⭐ (Off topic). The cats in the 2019 'Pet Semetary' were played by 4 actor cats named as follows: Leo, Jager, JD and Tonic. So I was wrong. There was only one funny name - TONIC! 😹😂🤣😆

⭐⭐ (Even more off topic) * I put an asterisk by my cat Tangus's name in John's Birthday Comment because I wanted to explain how the name came into being. My boyfriend wanted to call her Angus, as taken from the scene from 'Blackadder III', when Blackadder says to his redheaded Scottish cousin MacAdder, "I always thought Jamie and Angus were such fine boys!"

MacAdder replies to Blackadder, "Angus is a girl!"

We thought it might be a hoot to have a cat named Angus, who was a girl. Not long after, it became 'Tangus'. She is a long-haired tabby, just like the one
in 'Pet Semetary', 2019. If not combed every day, her hair soon becomes tangled.

🎁🎂🎉 Many Happy Returns John! 🎉🎂🎁

Well, that's amazing! I have just discovered that I was watching John as the clock struck midnight - officially his Birthday! 🕛 I was quite knocked out with finding out via the Famous Birthdays app I use that it's John's 74th Birthday today, and if I'd done a write-up on him last night, I'd have felt a bit of a silly eh, girl, at the opportunity of missing the chance of telling you all about my findings whilst still in the ecstacy of excitement that I am in writing this now!

The film I saw was the remake of Stephen King's 'Pet Semetary', and what with the 1989 original being one of my favourite Stephen King movies, I felt that this had a great deal to live up to. John Lithgow was, for me, the main acting attraction, and I expected that he'd play the part originally made famous by the late, and very tall, Fred Gwynne, which he did. His character's easy to find a likeable sort of person when he helps the little girl, Ellie, preceding a fall, which happens early on in the film. He (Jud, as he's called) has a social afternoon with the Creed family, his new neighbours, and he takes kindly to them all, including their family cat, Winston Churchill, or Church for short. In the first film, Church is played by a grey cat, like my Ulercy, but in this version, the star cat is a long-haired tabby, who looks just like my Tangus, only Tangus is a girl!* The actor cat was played by 4 different cats, 2 with particularly funny names, so it looks as though Mr Lithgow will be getting 2 comments on his Birthday from me after all because the names are funny enough to let you know when I dig around to find them; a bad choice of term considering what the film is about! 😲

Louis Creed is played by another very tall actor, Jason Clarke. From some angles, I thought Jason looks taller, but from others, it looks like John is. I'm almost sure John is taller, and if he isn't, it's a discrepency; Jed was taller than Louis in the 30-year-old original.

This film is well worth a watch because there are changes that give it more scope for turning it far more into a psychogical horror than the first.

DON'T READ ON if you wish to see this and haven't as there is a major spoiler coming up:

It's the older child who is killed and brought back to life in this remake. Already well advanced for her 9 years, she is able to torment her mother in ways that a toddler cannot, which is what she does when she comes back from the burial ground. The ending is left open to interpretation, but it might have been considered too outrageous to actually show what we know is bound to happen. Alternatively, it's not impossible for this gory story to continue with a follow-up.

I'm giving John a Birthday guess of 6ft4 for his peak and 6ft3.25 for today's height.

After all that, I'd like to wish John Lithgow a Very Happy Birthday! 😁👍

🎂🎉🎁🙀🎂🎉🎁😼🎂🎉🎁😺🎂🎉🎁😿

@Rising: neeson May have been 6’4 1/8 perhaps
Rising - 174 cm said on 31/Jan/19
He could have been just under 6'4", but I think he looked a full 6'4". Lithgow looked taller than Conan to me, though Vegas made a good point about the camera angle. Neeson was the most convincingly taller despite a possible camera advantage himself, but both Conan and Neeson acknowledged it so there's not much doubt there. However, I still can't for the life of me see any indication that Hasselhoff was taller than Conan in their back to back. It's really an impossible angle to tell. With that said, Lithgow did seem taller than Neeson in the only photo I've seen of them. Could be that Neeson was a small fraction over 6'4".
Canson said on 25/Dec/18
The more I see of him the more he looks a weak 6’4 at his peak. I think 192-192.5 as opposed to the full 6’4” that Hasselhoff or Neeson were. They had a more pronounced height advantage over Conan than he did after seeing it again. Maybe 6’3.75 is the better route for a low. 6’4.5 out of bed. But that’s what that height should look like. Conan is called that but is more 6’3.25 or best case peak 6’3.5
Canson said on 28/Nov/18
He would’ve definitely measured 6’4” or over at some point during the day. Whether he maintained it is another question but if he were below maybe only 6’3.75 at his low
Rising - 174 cm said on 25/Oct/18
He did look massive with Michael C. Hall in the "Hello, Dexter Morgan" scene, but yeah tough to say if it's actually as much as 6". You could argue something like 191.5 cm or 6'3.5" too since a legit 6'3" like Jimmy Smits also looked huge next to Michael C. Hall. But if you watch the scene with Lithgow and 6'1" Keith Carradine, it's obvious Lithgow is noticeably taller when he walks away so I'd say 6'3.5" would be the minimum and the full 6'4" still possible at that time, but nothing over that.
Andrea said on 5/Oct/18
Do you think he was still near his peak height on Dexter, Rob? While he certainly could look quite imposing, I'm not sure he really looked a big 6'4 guy next to C. Hall, even if most of the time they used certain camera angles which made it quite hard to tell the actual height difference between the two...

Well said Rob. He does seem honest but so does Neeson and Hasselhoff as all have claimed to be 6’4”. Larroquette claims 6’5” but his could be a morning height or an earlier measurement where he was say 6’4.5-.75 and rounded up. Canson said on 15/Nov/17
@Rampage/Rob: i would say that lithgow or Hoff would be the shortest as solid 6’4”s and Liam then Larroquette. Larrpquette i saw in person in an airport and he was taller than my father by a half I’d say. My dad peak was 193-193.5 (still around 192.5-193 today) and i would easily put Larroquette at 6’4 1/2 min unless i just didn’t pay attention to shoes and overestimated him but he had my father even walking past and standing next to him (few feet away for a second). He is underlisted peak here and that is rare for me to say. I can see him being 6’5 or 6’5.25 out of bed possibly even 6’5.5 if he lost an inch.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 15/Nov/17
Rob, who do you think was tallest peak out of Larroquette, Lithgow, Neeson and Hasselhoff?
Editor Rob
you could argue guys like Hoff/John as being a fraction over 6ft 4 I think a bit easier than Lithgow, although a prime 1980's Liam also could have been a nibble over 6ft 4 too.
Rising - 174 cm said on 9/Aug/17
I give him the full 193 at peak up through at least his season on Dexter when he was 63-64. On the otherhand, I'd give Selleck no more than 192. But the boots Selleck often wear probably made him look similar to Lithgow. I don't know about today, though. Certainly 3 years ago in the pic above, he looks 191 xm max, but his height can vary with Molina, even at that one event: Click Here

191 current and 193 peak is certainly plausible, though. I do believe he's one of those guys who kept his height until his mid 60s. His posture definitely has him looking below 6'3" at times the last few years.
Canson said on 9/Aug/17

Editor Rob
Grant, the 65-70 zone is a range where many men suffer noticeable loss...I think he would still measure a bit over 6ft 3, but his posture at times might make him seem at most 6ft 3.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Dec/16
He's not looking quite 6ft4 these days but I think it's more unlikely that he'd measure below 6ft3. If you look closely it's clear that he's still got Molina (a maintained 6ft2) by a solid 1in.

he has now crossed the 70 barrier and that age range of 65-70 is where a lot of men find they begin to shrink. He could probably be closer to 6ft 3 now, maybe a solid 6ft 3 if measured.

Judd ISR said on 15/Jun/15
i think Molina was at peak 6'2" (strong one) and today maybe 6'1.75", and that makes John Lithgow somewhere in the 6'2.5" range...considering his age, my guess is 6'2.5" today and 6'3.25" (max) at peak. never been a full 6'4" guy.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 10/Jun/15
I see about 6ft3 even if Molina is 6ft2
Sam said on 1/Jun/15
In this photo, Lithgow can still look notably taller relative to Molina than above, where I think Molina has the advantage of being closer to the camera. Still it wouldn't surprise if Lithgow has lost a little with age in his 60s, maybe 6'3.5" these days.

Rob, could you add these to his film credits?: Blow Out, The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Cliffhanger, and This is 40.
cole said on 28/May/15
@Editor Rob: Looks nearer 6'3 with Molina.
Danimal said on 1/Sep/14
Bare minimum 6'4.5" guy in his prime. Easily woke up at 6'5". Today he's probably a weak 6'4" given his age.

@James He made Denzel look 5'11 didn't he in The Pelican Brief!
James B said on 20/Jun/14
Looked 6'3 in Memphis belle however in Pelican Brief looked a proper 6'4
Sam said on 17/Mar/14
I saw him about 10 years ago at Tanglewood. He was a little shorter than me, right around 6'4". He was surprisingly big shouldered and healthy looking in person.

With (7'1.6" listed) Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I think John is doing pretty well here considering. Six-four still looks good for him.

in Dexter he towers over Keith Carradine, 6.4 minimum, looks more like 6.5.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/Aug/13
Looking nowhere near this on How I Met Your Mother.
Maybe 2-2.5in on Neil Patrick Harris. Shorter than Jason Segal.

"Peak height was 6ft 3.75in (192cm)"
"John Lithgow's height is 6ft 3in (191cm)"

Looked 6ft3-4 aswell in Cliffhanger with Stallone when both men were in their late 40s.
Under 6ft4 with Denzel Washington in Pelican Brief aswell.
MaskDeMasque said on 12/Aug/13
Great Actor, looked very tall in Third Rock. 6'4 seems good.
James said on 20/Jun/13
I recently saw John Lithgow at LAX. He's still a solid 6'4." We are the exact same height and I'm 6'3.5" straight out of bed without straining for added size. I played hoops in college and was listed as 6'5," which is roughly where I am with basketball shoes. My guess is that Lithgow was 6'5," or more, at his peak. He's one of those guys who has zero to gain from overstating his height. In fact, I think that being 6'4" or more might be a hindrance in the acting world. This sized guy will rarely get a shot at supporting roles with short leading men like Tom Cruise. No one likes to be dwarfed, especially on camera for all to see. This is an awesome website!
Hob said on 6/Aug/12
over 6'3(191) nowadays is a joke

Lithgow looked very tall in 'The Life & Death of Peter Sellers', he actually made 5'11 Geoffrey Rush look quite small. I can easily believe he's 6'4.

denzel has a bit floor disadvantage but he steel looks 4 in taller

lol james think denzel washington was 6'1 peak. then how tall is 6'0 claim chris pine whose 3-4cm taller denzel? 6'2-6'2.5? well.. big impossible. i only knew lithgow now is 6'3 and look 6'3. maybe 6'4 peak i don know..

On an episode of Third Rock from the Sun when 6 foot 6 inches Dennis Rodman guest starred, Lithgow looked only a couple of inches shorter than Rodman.

Looked about 15 cm taller than James Franco in Rise of the Planet of the Apes...

He plays good roles, and his villains are my favorites. I think his greatest work was his turn as serial murderer Arthur Mitchell in Season 4 of DEXTER. As a young man, he was an easy 6'4"--watch him in 1981's BLOW OUT: he has about 3" on a young, six foot-and-some-change John Travolta. Even on DEXTER, he looks to still be around that 6'4" mark.

He looked an inch taller than Jason Segal in How I Met Your Mother. I bet he's still 6'4; maybe his peak was 6'4.5?
guyfrommars said on 28/Feb/11
He's very tall. Looks at least 6'4" in every movie he ever appeared in. In the finale of All That Jazz he stands up and literally towers over the surprised 5'9" Roy Scheider. Also, he looked the same height as 6'4" Liam Neeson when he played his father in Kinsey.
Jonathan said on 17/Feb/11
Met him in Central Park in 2002. I am just over 6'2" and he was an inch or 2 taller than me. Quite surprised he was that tall.
James said on 23/Jan/11
Rex played by 6'3 (191cm) Craig Fairbrass looked around 1 inch shorter than Lithgow in that film.
Mattiew_- said on 17/Jan/11
Just watched the Pelican Brief , he towers Denzel W by a good 4 inches
There is no way that he is under 6'4
I remember he plays in " Cliffhanger " so if someone can make a quick search we could see how he stacks up with Rex Lynn in that film ...
James said on 14/Dec/10
He was 6'4 at his peak for sure. Probably not over it though. 6'3.75 in the 90's and 6'3 today.
CaptainSpaulding said on 5/Dec/10
And even if he has lost half an inch since hes like 60 years old, he was definatly 6'4" or a hair over before he woulda lost height. Hes at least 6'3.5" right now, but considering that he wears flat bottom shoes, he might appear to look 6'3". Tho id bet 20 bucks that he was at least 6'4" barefoot in the middle of the day before he lost height.
CaptainSpaulding said on 5/Dec/10
Guys the man is 6'4", even now. Or at least 6'3.75".

The man wears flat bottomed shoes. It makes him look half an inch shorter at all times. He has at least an inch on Will Arnnet, which would make sense. He always looks 6'3.5" due to his thin soled shoes he wears.
Tom said on 3/Dec/10
In Dexter, Lundi quotes to his recorder after meeting him 'Around 6"4', I'd say it's pretty accurate.
James said on 31/Oct/10
by the time he reaches 70 he will probably be 190cm tall.
Doug said on 30/May/09
Looked the full 6'4" compared to Stallone in Cliffhanger. Saw it last night, dwarfed him. Definately has the legit 6'3-6'4" look and the head of a man this height too!. Doubt 6'5" but a very tall man nonetheless.
yoyo said on 24/May/09
crazy.. he cant be 6ft5. cos that will make 6ft5 john cleese as 6ft6. 6ft4 for him looks right. 6ft3.75(192cm) at lowest.
Hugh said on 4/Nov/08
Still 6ft4 without a doubt. Probably closer to 6ft5 at his peak. But can give the illusion of being 6ft3ish due to posture.
Captain Spaulding said on 17/Sep/08
I think hes still 6'4" but he might seem shorter sometimes because he wears thin-healed/flat bottom shoes.
Exile said on 11/Aug/08
I saw him at a book signing in Central Park. Even sitting down, you could tell he was a good 6'4".
Mr. R said on 5/Aug/08
I met John years ago on Broadway when he was starring in M. Butterfly. He was close to 6-4 then, but he looks to have lost a little in recent years.
David Melton said on 10/Jul/08
The woman on Third Rock from the Sun Kristen johnston is 6 feet tall and John Lithgow looks 4 inches taller so 6'4" is believable I'd say.

back in late 70s and 80s he looks a good 6ft4.. dun know about his foot wear ~~1 or 2inches? ..but nowadays might drop a inches..as his no more looking a solid 6ft4.. he might stand just 191cm tall now..
Aussie Bloke said on 19/Nov/06
If Stallone is 5ft8, what many people say he is, then I'm not sure if Lithgow is in fact 6ft4, because he doesn't appear over 6 inches taller than Stallone in various pictures I have seen of the two. Unless Stallone is wearing lifts, which is possible, the difference in height is certainly not 7-8 inches, look again.
Anthony said on 29/Sep/06
Lithgow is definitely 6'4. He always looks tall in everything I've seen him in.
connie girL said on 21/Sep/06
he looks a solid 193 in 1982 movie BLOW OUT.. that was 20+years ago.. i would think that he lost 1.5cm in an accuracy of his age..cos my dad was about his age and was recently lost 1.5cm as 182.5cm tall,in his 40s hes a solid 184barefoot as i mearsure my dad height when im age12..now john would be a barefoot 191.5cm,but round up 192cm easily.. so 192cm his height..
kobby boy said on 19/Sep/06
john cleese and him looks 1~2cm diffrent at height.. but i was thinking his old nowadays..so 193 was not right..he might lost 1~2cm.. i think his a solid 191barefoot.. and cleese a 193barefoot..

I too have met John in person I'm about 5 6 and I was wearing 2 inch heels standing next to him looking up it felt like I was standing next to a Redwood Tree, I think he's learned how to lean & stand a certain way to make his co-stars not look so small. He's tall, lean. and so so sweet, I love that man!
Danny said on 2/Mar/06
I would give him 6'3" tall at the present time. Next to Cleese, he was about 1.5 inches shorter at the restaurant scene in 3rd Rock from the Sun when they stood eye to eye. We know Cleese is about 6'4 1/2" tall.
sam said on 3/Nov/05
I saw this guy in person. I'm a little over 6'4" and I would give him 6'4" even. He was surprisingly broad and muscular-looking in person...I guess due to his prissy characters, I thought he was skinner.

6'4 all the way man. He always wore flat boots in all his movies unlike most of todays hollywood actors, who wear lifts n give a wrong display of their heights.
