@ Nik - I do definitely remember replying and I am glad you do too!

⭐️ When Leslie was making 'Quadrophenia', Roger Daltrey himself was raving about what a nice person Leslie is, so he's one person who agrees with you there!

@ Sandy Cowell - I know and it was about 10 months ago! I think that it was on the page of another celeb, possibly a new one!

Leslie is a very nice person and Rob has got her listing spot on, although she may have lost a fraction now!

Cheers Sandy!

@ Nik - Yes, I do remember writing to you about it. It might possibly have been on Rob's page, but it was probably on the page of another Celeb.

Cheers Nik!

@ Sandy Cowell - I think you did reply on a different page, I really do. πŸ‘

I am sure that Leslie topped the 5'5.5" mark at her tallest, she may be slightly smaller now!

Cheers!

@ Nik - Good grief! I'm sorry I didn't reply when you'd poured your heart out. I think I must have replied on a different page.

Leslie can have 5ft5.5, but hasn't she lost a bit now, Rob? I can't see her being quite as tall at 58 as she was in her 20's, I'm afraid!
Editor Rob
She could have lost half inch, but I'm not sure she does much these days in film or tv, so I didn't update it.

I am disabled and have a skin condition called epidermolysis bullosa. Thankfully I only have the mild form so it does not affect the quality of my life other than I find it difficult to walk very far at times. It affects my hands a little bit and my feet a lot but it is not obvious that I have this condition because I don't have it anywhere else.

Cheers!

@ Nik - Yes, I'd love to share in this interesting bit of info about you!
Then I'll have to wreck my brains and think if I can come up with something equally scintilating about myself, if that's at all possible!
This time Leslie can have 5ft5.5 from me too!

⚑ How about this for a Super Furry Laugh?
I was just sitting on the loo upstairs with the door wide open (as usual!), when I heard a familiar cat-based noise. I then saw Erramius poking her little snow white head round the door, only this time she was about a FOOT TALLER!
It turned out that she was sitting on a fan heater, which was 'parked' between the toilet and the bathroom doors, completely without my knowledge as to how it got there! ⚑

It's doesn't seem long since we were filling this page up with interesting comments. I think that she is definitely 5'5.5" and the 4 votes reflect this.

@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!

Have any of your half-brothers got any children? I ask this because they would be prime candidates to have twins!

When I said non of my female relatives are as tall as 5'5" I meant blood relatives! I doubt any of my female blood relatives are even 5'4"!

Did your uncle Victor have any other children?
Nik said on 25/Jun/17
@ Sandy Cowell

Hi Sandy!

Which cat has been sounding off? I like it how you dropped in "and she's ginger"'
The twins on my Mums side of the family (2 lots) were and are cousins of my Mum, my Mum has been expecting more twins on her side of the family, but alas there haven't been any more!
Yes, you are right that 70 is too young an age to die in this day and age, I am sorry to hear sbout the passing of John. It's also terrible to hear about Beverley only living to be 18, life is so cruel.
Actually Leslie and Debbie aren't generally considered tall enough to model nowadays, I might struggle a bit if I was a woman at my height! I think the height requirement should be reduced or abolished in my opinion.
It's interesting what you said about Susan not being tall because a lot of people say that tall fathers have tall daughters and vice versa, well that is not true with Susan because your uncle Victor was considerably tall. I don't believe all that to be truthful and it is both parents who determine someone's height, and there are many other factors too which play a part! Who is the tallest female in your family?
Fear and anxiety are monstrous things if they get out of hand, it is easy for the sufferer to get into a rut and for their life to stagnate as a result. The bad dreams you are having must be awful, unfortunately it was to be expected that you would have such terrible dreams.

Cheers!

@ Nik - Hi! I've just been looking through the Leslies to find that Ms Ash is 5ft5.5 and not the 5ft6 I was thinking she was when I wrote the comment yesterday! That means my cousin IS nearly as tall as her! πŸ‘
Nik said on 24/Jun/17
@ Sandy Cowell

Thanks for that Sandy. I have a cousin called Susan too on my Dad's side iof my family. I don't think there's a single female in my family who is as tall as 5'5"! I will reply to your comment from yesterday later!

Cheers!
Sandy Cowell said on 24/Jun/17
@ Nik - I asked my Dad last night and the daughter, Susan, with the father of over 6ft (the late Victor) is 5ft4 - 5ft5! That means she was only a couple of inches away from Leslie - rather better than I stand! Ha ha ha!
Sandy Cowell said on 23/Jun/17
@ Nik - On blast and double blast! I have just lost my reply, due to a cat sounding off outside and putting me off!😹😝 - and she's ginger!

So here I go again.

My Stepmum's twin was a brother, called John, who died only recently. He wasn't old enough to die - not in this day and age. He was 70.
My twin cousins are the children of my Dad's brother Ron and his wife June. They had 2 other children called Beverley and Martin. Tragically, Beverley was born with an enlarged liver and only lived to 18. My Dad was one of the people who sat with her every day in hospital when she was dying. I was 14 and at school.
I met cousin Andrew (the twin) again at my Grandmother's funeral. He grew to about 5ft10 or 11 and had bleached his hair! His brother Martin, the same sort of height, has quite a few children, who will all be grown up now! So has twin Sarah, who is of small to average height.*
Yes, like worry, fear is a waste of time and energy, and something that the sufferer ideally needs help for once it gets out of hand. I'm not usually too bad, but it is all part of the human way of thinking. Last night I had my first bad dream since Peelio was run over, and I know there will be more. Alas, it's how our subconscious minds make sense of recent events and can be an upsetting experience.

* I don't have cousins who are girls who would have grown tall enough to model, like Leslie and sister Debbie! Even 6ft1-2 Victor won't have because he married a comparatively short woman! His daughter is called Susan.
Cheers for now, Nik! πŸ‘

Sandy Cowell

Hi Sandy!

Fear can be a horrible thing if it makes a persons life noticeably worse, however if that is not the case then you are right in that fear and anxiety may serve a purpose in survival.
Anyone who's life is troubled too much by fear needs to find ways of confronting the beast which is the fearful and anxious thoughts. The best ways I think of doing this are for an individual to do everything they can to reduce the probability of the feared event happening, and also to be aware that the things people fear and are anxious about do not happen more to people who fear those things than the people who don't have those fears.
I never knew that your step-mum was a twin, is her twin a brother or sister?
In your last message you told me that you have twin cousins on your Dad's side of the family, are they children of one of your Dad's brothers? I remember you saying that your Dad is one of 5 brothers. I didn't know that your uncle Victor was a twin and it is sad to hear that his own twin brother died before he was born.
My nephew Oliver did have an interest in history even after he had finished studying it at Hull university, as I know that he has researched the subject on his own volition since graduation, I don't know if he is still as keen now but I think he probably is! He is employed by an agency and works in a bank so he doesn't use history in his occupation, but as I have said he does have an interest in the subject and this interest gives him a lot of pleasure and has helped him with his personal development.
Yes it was a coincidence that we enquired about Realist's height, we were wondering if the height gene had been passed on to him and if he is as tall as his grandmothers were, even now he will be very tall if he is as tall or taller than his 6'3" grandmother!

Cheers!
Sandy Cowell said on 20/Jun/17
@ Nik - Thank you! How very kind! Yes, anxiety is a horrible feeling, but it must be there as part of our survival instinct, like fear.
It is good that Steve is happy with his life the way it is. I can understand that he wanted to start work rather than go on studying. Work experience in this day and age is often as valuable as qualifications, and having money in your pocket frees you of all sorts of worries and anxieties! The most important thing is happiness and contentment, of course!
We both had the same idea of writing to Realist enquiring about his height as he had two such tall grandmothers; that was a little bit of a coincidence, wasn't it?
I have twins on my Dad's side of the family and his second wife WAS a twin! Sooner or later, they're bound to have had twins! I would have loved that! I have twin cousins, Sarah and Andrew and my Dad's brother Victor was a twin, but the other baby sadly died in the womb.
Families are so important in this life. I hope Oliver finds his history degree to be a great asset and that his interest in the subject is ongoing, because you can never know enough history!
I find that often for models like Leslie and her sister, that they go into acting or singing and make a career that way. You do get those who also have had a university education: Lily Cole is one - and she has gone into acting and much more besides! She leads a very interesting life and she is 5ft11 to boot!

Cheers! πŸ‘

@ Realist - Hey! 6ft and 6ft3 for women at the turn of last century and just before is seriously tall! How tall are you then?
Sandy Cowell said on 19/Jun/17
@ Nik - I'll do a proper reply later, but I've just remembered that the 5ft3 woman victim of Jack the Ripper, according to the Inspector Morse episode, was 'Long Liz'!
That would hardly apply to a woman of that height today!
Nik said on 19/Jun/17
@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!

Well it would have been difficult for my family, at that time, to have funded Steve's stay at university and in any case I think he is happy enough with his life now so I don't think he has any regrets about not going.
Yes many university students do live it up a bit but many unfortunately do run up a lot of "student debt", which must be terrible if they can't find the funds to get out of this debt. I have got one cousin who went to university and like you know my 24 year old nephew, Oliver, studied history at Hull university, he has been back home living with his Mum for the last 3 years!
I used to know a pair of twins from high school and I got on quite well with them, they are both male and I think they are identical twins but you could tell the difference between them! I have never known any other pairs of twins although I think that there were a few sets from previous generations in my Mum's side of the family.
I think the reason why there were not so many broken families at one time is because of the stigma attached to it but I don't think that should be a good reason for keeping people together. Unfortunately nothing can be done to stop these things happening and I know that in my family there a couple of cases of broken families.
So what do you reckon the average height is for a German woman from the the 1800's? Also how tall do you think the average German man was from this era? Your grandmothers grandmother will have been exceptionally tall and taller than the vast majority of women but there is nothing wrong with this, it is something to be celebrated. I am sure that I have seen your comment about the "nickname" given to the lady of 5'3" who you mentioned, I shall have a look to see if I can find it.
Finally for now, I have just read your comment on the Rob Paul page, and I hope you are feeling a little bit better.
The important thing is to relax as anxiety is a horrible thing as I know having suffered from it myself, anxiety isn't constructive and it doesn't change anything other than make someone feel worse. It's best to relax as much as possible because anxiety does not serve any purpose. It's easier said than done but I know myself that the mindset I have mentioned in the last paragraph is the best one to have. As long as you are doing things right, which you are, then be happy in that knowledge for your own welfare.

Cheers!

My great grandmother one was 6'3 another was 6'0 another was 5'4 and the other was 5'3 so 2 were very tall! Born early 1900s and late 1800s.
Sandy Cowell said on 19/Jun/17
@ Nik - Can you imagine how tall 5ft7 was in the 1800's? Fantastic!
Her offspring must have married shorter guys, or the tallness would have prevailed.
The accepted sort of height for women, according to the penultimate episode of 'Inspector Morse' was 4ft9, 4ft
11 etc. These were the heights mentioned for the victims of Jack the Ripper. One was 5ft3, and she had a nickname only given to tall people! So 4 inches taller was quite remarkable!
Sandy Cowell said on 18/Jun/17
@ Nik - Hi! I think it's a little upsetting that Steve turned down his place at university! Does he regret it? Stephen Fry, who I absolutely adore, loved his uni days and you can read some of his funny escapades in his book 'Mohab is my Washpot!'
Still, if he felt like he'd rather start earning money than go to uni and end up with a huge 'student debt', as they invariably do, then that was up to him!
No I have never, ever heard of anymore than two children born on the same day, except for in the case of twins sharing their birthday with an older brother! They were boys too! I think things like that are great, as are likenesses in families, who takes after Mum, who takes after Dad, who's the tallest and who's the shortest! There was a rare case at my primary school where there were two sisters, a year apart in age, and the younger girl was noticeably taller than the older sister! I don't know if they had different Dads; those days it was very unusual. I was the only child from a broken home in my class who would therefore have had the opportunity for half-siblings and my brother likewise. Don't things change? It is pretty much the norm now! You just have to watch the Jeremy Kyle show!
I'm sure Leslie and Debbie had the same parents, as they do resemble each other, though more in build than facially, but you can tell they are sisters!
As regards my having a 5ft7 tall great great grandmother on my German side, I find it hard to believe myself!
Enjoy your holiday week Nik! πŸ˜‰
Nik said on 18/Jun/17
@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!

It is a truly amazing coincidence that you are virtually slap bang in the middle of Dominic and your late step-mum in terms of age, I don't know if you have told your Dad about it, he will love it!

I found it very interesting to learn that your maternal grandmother had 5 first names and yes it is nice for some one to have a lot of first names, I would love to know the record for the number of first names that belonging to someone!

Yes your maternal grandmothers grandmother was tall for her generation at 5'7"!

Now I will tell you something that will really interest you and Rob, not only did Steve's (and Mark's and my) Mum and Dad get married on the same day as Karen's Mum and Dad, but they also got married at the same time as well!! - at 12:00 in the afternoon! I didn't know that until last night when my Mum mentioned it! Also I can tell you that Karen earnt a place at Salford university. as Steve ironically did, however Karen accepted her place where as Steve declined his place and got a job instead! They are both the same age so they would obviously have both started at Salford university at the same time as each other!

Yes it is fascinating when one parent shares a birthday with one of their children or a couple both have a child on each of their birthdays, what about when someone shares a birthday with one of their parents, and a grandparent on the same side of the family? Also what do you think about 3 or 4 siblings all sharing the same birthday?

I hope you enjoy the rest of today and the week ahead! Cheers Sandy!
Sandy Cowell said on 17/Jun/17
@ Nik - The funny thing is I hadn't even worked out that the age difference was virtually identical until I wrote that very comment - and that's a fact! I have yet to inform my Dad about it! He will find it quite amazing, and that's exactly what coincidences are and a great topic for discussion.
I see you've done your homework on Francis Rossi, and it's news to me that he has 4 first names, 2 of which are names of my half-brothers! Yes, it's unusual to have so many first names, but rather nice! Often a child was, and still is, given loads of names to honour various members of both families, which is a custom that's never going to lose its appeal. Of course, Francis was a 40's baby! My maternal grandmother had 5 first names, all German versions of names we would recognize in England to this day! She was born in 1897! Interestingly, she had a rough start in life and grew to be no taller than 5ft, even though the tall gene was there. Her grandmother was about 5ft7 - very tall and 'stately' for the 19th century woman!
Now the coincidence of your brother Steve and his wife's Karen's parents getting married on the same day is devastatingly rare! What are the odds on that? I find it a smashing coincidence when kids are born on their Mum's birthday, or girls on their Mum's and boys on their Dad's! It all happens, but when a couple both have a kid on each of their birthdays, that is quite phenomenal!
This is a subject always worth revisiting!
The Barry Manilow concert which was seen by Leslie snd Rowan will almost certainly have taken place in the early 80's. Perhaps even the very late 70's. The best thing to do would be to find out when they went out together!

Cheers Nik and have a great weekend! πŸ‘
Nik said on 15/Jun/17
@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!

Time certainly does appear to speed up as you start to get a little bit older, I found that time seemed to go really slow until I got to the age of 25, but then in the subsequent 15 or 16 years it has sped up massively. I think that you have brought up a coincidence with your youngest half-brother Dominic being younger than you by practically the same time span that you were younger than your step-mum, well I can tell you a coincidence in my family! The coincidence is that my (and Steve's and Mark's) Mum and Dad got married on exactly the same day in 1965 as Steve's wife Karen's Mum and Dad got married!
I think it is very interesting what you said about Leslie Ash and Rowan Atkinson head banging at a Barry Manilow concert, do you know when this concert was held please? Or could you tell me anything you know about it? This is so I can read about it on the internet!
Also what you said about Francis Rossi's family owning an ice cream business is interesting too, his full name is Francis Dominic Nicholas Michael Rossi! I know this because I have just been onto Google to try, and fail in finding out his height, so yes he has got a long name and also what occurred to me was that 2 of his middle names are the same as 2 of your half-brothers names!

Cheers!

* I read at the end of last year when the lists of celebrities we lost during the year were printed in the newspapers, that Rick Parfitt was one of them. I hope I'm mistaken.
I prefer Status Quo's more mellow, tuneful stuff; the rest is too samey! 🎼🎢 I know a family of devoted Quo fans and they assured me that the Quo boys are really good to their fans.

☝ ⭐ Fascinating Fact Time ⭐

Francis Rossi's family owned an ice cream business, selling cornets from Rossi's ice cream vans! I don't know if they are still in business, but they were when I was running into the street to buy ice-creams and that was still going on in the 90's! I wouldn't do it now because cats would follow me and I'm always on my guard when it comes to the stinking traffic. Of course, the cats LOVE ice-cream, but they have to make do with the shop- bought variety! 🍦
Sandy Cowell said on 14/Jun/17
@ Nik - That's fantastically interesting! I'd forgotten it was Eddie Kidd, though it rings a loud bell now! What is news to me though is that she was with Rick Parfitt* for 5 whole years! That's a long time when you are young; the older you get the faster time flies! My Step-Mum told me just that when I was 31 and she was so right! She was only 16 years and 26 days my senior, the same difference bar 3 days as my youngest half-brother Dominic and myself!
As for interesting relationships, how about this one for Leslie? She went out with Rowan Atkinson many years ago! I read about them going to a Barry Manilow concert and headbanging as he was doing his singing! That must have been wonderful to watch and really hilarious! I reckon if they hadn't been celebrities, they would have been booted out, but it was too good an opportunity for journalists to snatch up a story!

Hi Sandy! I know that you will continue to keep owning cats despite what happened to Peelio, I think this shows such great positivity. I read your comment on the Rob Paul page earlier today and you will see my reply shortly, I will send you my main comment after you have sent me your next one. After reading what you said on Rob's page I know that you are doing well considering what has happened.

Yes, Leslie and Debbie do seem to have got on really well judging by the pictures of them that I have seen elsewhere on the internet, I couldn't work out who was the tallest though because one of them, or both of them, seemed to be slouching, but you helped answer that one for me.
I can tell you that Debbie was once married to stunt motorcyclist Eddie Kidd, and that she had a 5 year relationship with Rick Parfitt!

Cheers Sandy!

@ Nik - Hi! Thank you for your message about Peelio. I actually had the courage to look at the photos of her I have on my phone about forty minutes ago. She was so perfect.

Yes, Leslie and her sister Debbie must have got on really well to have worked together in the same profession and often getting sent to photo shoots for the same magazines. Unless I'm mistaken, Debbie also married a well known celebrity, though I can't remember right now who, but he was a very prominent name indeed!

@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!

I know, what happened to her was really terrible. Things get easier to comprehend in time, everyday things will get better for you.

They were quite a double act these Ash sisters, weren't they?

I liked what you said about Patsy Kensit being called "Peapod Patsy" due to her once appearing in an advert for peas. Patsy Kensit was born in 1968 so she is 8 years younger than Leslie Ash.
Sandy Cowell said on 12/Jun/17
@ littlesue - Patsy will have been much too young for the Fairy ad, and not even around when the early ones were made!
Sandy Cowell said on 12/Jun/17
@ Nik - Thanks. I'm having difficulty taking it in. She was young, fit and vital and had years in her.

I remember 'Pink' magazine now that you mention it; I would even buy it some weeks! Leslie and Debbie were both in it, I'm quite sure about that!

littlesue said on 12/Jun/17
This looks about right for Leslie, sure it Patsy Kensit who was in the Fairly Liquid adverts?
Sandy Cowell said on 11/Jun/17

Nik said on 11/Jun/17
@ Rob @ Sandy Cowell

Do either of you know who is the tallest out of sisters Leslie Ash and Debbie Ash?
Nik said on 11/Jun/17
@ Sandy Cowell

It was interesting what you said about Leslie actually appearing inside the "Jackie" magazine, as well as on the front cover! It sounds like she was a dominant figure in the magazine! Was she purely in this magazine as a fashion model, or was she featured in the magazine for other reasons as well? I bet you would have been surprised, as a little girl watching the "Fairy Liquid" advert, if you had known how successful she was going to be and that she would appear in a teenage magazine as well as being an actress who you have seen quite a bit on your telly! Now you are discussing her on the Internet too! I would be interested to know how tall her actress sister is!
So you reckon the picture of her above could have been taken in Brighton, I have never been there myself but I did go on the outskirts of the city during a holiday to Eastbourne with my parents about 6 years ago, I would imagine that you know Brighton quite well!

Cheers Sandy!

No, I never knew that Leslie released a song with Caroline Quentin, which made the charts! I tend to listen to music of my choice rather than the charts, so I'd be no good in a quiz show on current music!
Leslie was frequently on the cover of 'Jackie', as well as in the pages inside! She had a sister with blonde curly hair called Debbie. Her own hair was long, straight and reddish brown in those days! πŸ‘

Like you said she also appeared in the "Jackie' magazine, I think she was on the cover as a fashion model! It seems that you have been familiar with "Leslie Ash" just about all your life!

@ Nik - I think actually that 'Quadrophenia' was probably her first acting call, and when you look at the heights of most of the guys in that, she will have stood out in that - as tall, even at 5ft6! Sting, who must have been 5ft11 then, looked like a giant and Ray Winstone looked way above average, which actually led me astray for years, as well as his portrayal of Henry VIII!
Leslie was also in a little comedy playing a nail-filing secretary called 'Nancy'! I can't remember the name of it and it wasn't the big hit that 'Men Behaving Badly' was!

Cheers Nik! πŸ‘

Yes she was a nurse in "Where the Heart is", this was one of the other acting roles that she was most famous for, I am glad you mentioned this! Like you said, who can forget her as Deborah Burton in "Men Behaving Badly"!
It's good that many actors and actresses have appeared in adverts at different stages in their lives, I am now thinking of Alison King in the "DAZ" adverts!
I wonder if Leslie was ever 5'7"? Maybe she was 5'6" when she was younger, like her agency said she was, and like she once said she was herself!
I think you could easily be right in estimating her to be 5'5.75" or Rob could be right in quoting her at 5'5.5", it's a tough call!
Sandy Cowell said on 7/Jun/17
...and wasn't she a nurse is 'Where the Heart is'?
Yes, I'm aware she was in the 'Fairy Liquid' advert, but there's no way I would have recognised her from child to teenage model! I remember the 'Fairy Liquid' tune very well!
In 1964, my Mum would stick me in front of the TV to stop me getting into mischief! It worked!

@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!

Well on Sunday afternoon I had a lot of fun making comments on celebrities who could be found on page 6 of the A's, I commented on Zawe Ashton, John Ashton, Ron Atkinson, Emma Atkins, and Leslie Ash!
Well Leslie's first appearance on TV was in 1964 as a 4 year old in a "Fairy Liquid" advert, in the advert Leslie said "Mummy, why are your hands so soft?"!
Her part as Deborah in "Men Behaving Badly" was the acting role that she was most famous for, she also appeared in Quadrophenia", like you said, and in police drama "Merseybeat"!
She is also married to former Leeds United footballer Lee Chapman! - who is 6'3"!

I would say that Leslie is definitely over 5'5", and 5'5.75" is a decent call. I don't know whether to go for 5'5.5" or 5'5.75"!
Arch Stanton said on 6/Jun/17

I remember her in my 'Jackie' magazines in my schooldays! Then she went on to acting! I was very impressed with her groovy little performance in 'Quadrophenia' and then who can forget her as Deborah in 'Men Behaving Badly'?
For her height, I used to read she was 5ft7! So I will settle for 5ft5.75, a little higher than the 5ft5 stipulated here!

Sorry, but Ms Ash is being less than completely honest here. She is nearer 5'3" - 5'3 1/2". She is actually a bit shorter than me and I am only 5'4" at the most. Another example of the celebrity publicity machine exaggeration/fib.

Heights are barefeet estimates, derived from quotations, official websites, agency resumes, in person encounters with actors at conventions and pictures/films.

Other vital statistics like weight, shoe or bra size measurements have been sourced from newspapers, books, resumes or social media.
