He does give a 5'7", 5'7.5" illusion sometimes Brad. Especially in his early films or with Gwyneth Paltrow and Keanu Reeves. I still think the mugshot is accurate though. 5'8" barefoot midday.
You can see he's wearing lfits from a mile away. The worst part about it is that he doesn't get longer pants to cover them. He also often doesn't wear shoes specifically made for lifts. Cruise is a master at it. He can look like he's a solid 5'9" without suspicious looking footwear.

Those shots Rising put up make me think he might be 5' 7.5". Those are sick pieces of footwear. Doesn't he know that people see that garbage? Dial 1-800-Cruise and ask him about expensive stealth shoes. I would have run from Paltrow after seeing those shots. How do you walk in those things? I guess you pull up and drop like Herman Munster.

I finally saw "Ironman". It was obvious that he was heightening. I noticed that in many scenes, he seemed out of proportion for his apparent "movie height". For example, his arms and torso appeared to lack necessary length.
I'd give him 5-7 in bare feet.

Downey in lifts getting ANNIHALATED by Terence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow, Howard must be a little over 6'0" ( listed 6'0.25" ) which makes him about 6'1.25" minimum in the pic im about to show, Downey is a clean 3" less ( and the worrying thing is that Downey is standing slightly ahead of Howard but we will negate this as his legs are slightly wider apart ) so 6'1.25" - 3 " = 5'10.25" . So in these silver sneakered elevator shoes, Downey is just a shade over 5'10". they prolly have 1" on the outside and 1"-1.25" on the inside. That means roughly the biggest Downey can get in these shoes is just over 5'10" which I belive is what Glenn coined him at ( Glenn? ) So once again, Downey in Lifts cant even match 5'11" !!! lol here is the pic : Click Here

I know I always eventually tie it in with Stallone but Downey regularly wears similar and sometimes worse elevator shoes than Stallone and still struggles to get to that 5'11" mark, whereas Stallone not only OWNS 5'11" but also 6'0" and even 6'1" sometimes !!
Downey however, cannot, no matter how hard he tries, hide what he is ..........a GENUINE 5'8" man.

I think your right rising. Bear in mind , we was also out partying all the time being young and new to hollywood so could have been out partying all night the night before. I still think he is no shorter than 5'8" in the evening other than rare exceptions ( late night after a day of heavy manual work and physical activity. ) 5'8.5" morning is still my solid estimate. Just interesting to see how short he looked there though.

Seriously, notice how short he is compared to everyone else in every shot and especially the full body shots. Look how short he is compared to Robert Rustler ( who claims 6'1" but looks closer to 6'0" in just about everything , see "sometimes they come back" ) . This is the first and only time I've ever seen Downey look in the 5'6"-5'7" brackett, he is usually in the 5'7" - 5'8" brackett but he looks really really short here compared to Rustler......and ..........well, everyone, lol !

My friend is a security guard at Heathrow and has met Downey jr face to face and barefoot . He said Downey was about 5'10'ish but then took his shoes off and was around my height ( around 5'7.5" evening ) although I think my friend has called it wrong, I think Downey is 5'8.5" in the morning and around 5'8" - 5'7.75" evening depending on height loss.
I also watched weird science the other night and to be perfectly frank, Downey was TINY in it. Outsized by every single other persn that appeared on camera, and im including the group scenes :p

Both Glenn and Downey are leaning, Downey is slightly closer tot he camera, if you look at Glenn's left shoulder you can see Downey hitching over it, we dont know the ground but he is about 5'10.5" in this pic if both him and Glenn stood perfectly straight on even ground and in line. I cant remember what he was wearing bu prolly his silver sneakers with 1" outside and 1.5" inside.

He admits to bein shorter than Gwyneth Paltrow so he isnt that insecure, I think it was really after Skanner Darkly when he started to take the lifts outside work, and then Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was when he finally went " good, I can wear these bad boys and it adds to me a wee bit " . Its just he would be a great ambassador for 5'7" - 5'8" range guys as he is a handsome and talented gentleman, but his desire to join the 5'9" - 5'10" club is quite off putting, some of the shoes he has worn are just embarrassing, and the fact he cant quite get to 5'11" in any of them makes it even more embarassing. When he was in Ally Macbeal he was known as being "a short cutey" and Ally often remarked on how she liked him but he was a bit short..............in fact maybe this is where it came from, his insecurity I mean. Polly mentions the fact he is noticeably short in Chaplin, this is a film where he is regularly seen in full body shots, in flat shoes, on stage and even ground, with Marissa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, David Duchovny and Diane Lane, and he is quite short. He is owned totally by 4" or so by Dan Aykroyd who I always actually thought was 5'10" - 5'11" so im guessing Aykroyd is at least 6'0" flat. This is a film where he embraced and celebrated his size and it worked a treat. Then there was Only You where heplayed this cooky guy who is quite average and short and not that impressive an he is trying everything to convince Marissa Tomei that he is the man of her dreams, he is shown again as a rather short guy in this film. Robert is about 5'8" so an article calling him 5'9" isn't too bad. I think that's what he claims. I've seen Downey listed at 5'10" as far back as the late 80's/early 90's though. 5'10" for Downey is ridiculous, 5'9" is false but not ridiculous.

Robert is about 5'8" so an article calling him 5'9" isn't too bad. I think that's what he claims. I've seen Downey listed at 5'10" as far back as the late 80's/early 90's though. 5'10" for Downey is ridiculous, 5'9" is false but not ridiculous.

Well Glenn this is certainly good for your Jude Law at 5'11.5" argument. Even with truly monster shoes Downey is still shorter. This really kills the 5'9" claims for Law.

I've thought all along Robert was 5'8". If you look back at "Chaplin," for example, he's clearly no taller than that. I wish he didn't feel the need to wear lifts or whatever. He's got a beautifully proportioned, athletic build. I think he's perfect the way he is.

Editor Rob if the shot wasn't cropped then the camera - which I think it is - sits slightly below his eyelevel. How much height is gained depends on how far it is away.

Tellem, i Robert Downey Jrwas a wee bit closer to the camera the same thing would apply, however he is right up against the wall chart , the only thing affecting the perception is that the camera is lower than the tip of his head but the most he would gain is a max of 1/4 inch. We did a study on the mugshot and concluded that he was a shade under 5'8" when this was taken midday but we cant factor how long he may have been awake before it was taken. But yeah, the lowest he can be is 5'7.75" when this pic was taken . ( barefoot of course, remember, he is in 1" prison issue shoes )

I just want to clarify that lifts are shoes with hidden lift inside but they have a relatively normal external heel size. Therefore a lot of the terrible chunky footwear that Downey Jr wears I would not consider lifts, for example a recent photo posted by RisingForce shows Downey Jr wearing man-heels or possibly women

But those pics with Reeves, My mugshot study, the dozens of pics ive posted and especially my pics of him with Kilmer show the limitations of how tall someone around 5'8" can look. The biggest I myself have ever seen Downey achieve is about 5'10" but can LOOK 5'11" ish but thats in films. Pics of Downey in lifts with Favreu show the truth aswell, and Favreu is a flat 6'0" Yet downey struggles to come within range of Favreu , Stallone REGULARLY matches up and gives the impression of matching 6'0" and 6'1" guys.

great pics with Downey and Reeves, difference is immense there. I think Reeves could be a legit 6'1" as if you look at my pics of Downey and Kilmer he holds up slightly better. My own friend who works in London Heathrow has seen both Downey and Stallone BAREFOOT and standing right next to them. He pegged Downey at around 5'8" and Stallone at around 5'10" . If anyone knows anyone who works at London Heathrow or anyone works thre themselves, my friends name is Esam Y ( wont give away his full name ) and he works on the security gates. so ask him or anyone who knows him to ask. All the evidence suggests Stallone is at least 2" taller than Downey, I saw them on E Channel and the difference was around 2 inches, the pics of them from that Basketball game are posted here, and my friend said 5'8" for Downey and 5'10" for Stallone having seen both barefoot !!!!! It adds up, Downey struggles to even match never mind overcome Gwyneth Paltrow in heels when she is standing at 6'0" ( 5'9" plus high heels ) yet Stallone easilly matches up to 5'11" - 6'0.5" on many many occasions. The tallest Downey has ever looked is a weak 5'11" but more often 5'10" whereas the tallest Stallone has ever looked is a good 6'1".

Downey has suffered mental health problems. Not being bigoted but it usually affects men that fall slightly below average, but not utterly short. Downey at 5ft8 is slightly below avg. Very short men (-5ft6) develop coping strategies, yet these men just under average, in theory, take longer to develop coping strategies as the "short" comments aren't as frequent as what the utterly short man get. Something I read in psychology books. Put it like this - if an artist creates a painting and nobody makes bad comments, then one or two critics say it's crap, it plays on the mind more then it would if everyone were to say it's crap. Do you get my drift?

Excellent work on Downey though Annoyed, it seems we've pretty much confirmed his barefoot height even to the time of day! Glenn's estimate of 5-8, 5-8.5 also confirms this.

Try speaking English next time Tellem. There are other pictures of him in barefeet, slippers, sandals ect. that suggest he IS what he claims. I'm about 5'8" myself so I obviously wouldn't be less of a fan if Sly was around my height. However I can't see him being my height for numerous reasons.

Try speaking English next time Tellem. There are other pictures of him in barefeet, slippers, sandals ect. that suggest he IS what he claims. I'm about 5'8" myself so I obviously wouldn't be less of a fan if Sly was around my height. However I can't see him being my height for numerous reasons.

Perfectly said Leonari. There's nothing wrong with lifts or elevator shoes except if you're going to wear them and have the money atleast make sure to wear them right. This seems consistent with most reports. e.g. in the Pic with Glenn, I would imagine he had those ugly grey/silver sneakers that pack one inch external and what looks about another 1" or 1.5" inside so he is actually about 5'10" - 5'10.5" with Glenn, But Glenn is tilting his neck forward more and Downey is leaning in over Glenn so who knows, but lets study a little bit about the pick, here is my attempt : Click Here

I took every single factor into consideration, counted a shed load of pixels ( sore eyes now ) and looked for every height related average I could find.....I then ran it all through an equation an worked out the margins for error ( phew ) and this is the study I have put together : Click Here
Now obviously it wont prove his morning height or his midday height or even his evening height but it will prove what exactly he stood at on the day the mugshot was taken with all accountable factors included.
it seems he was 3mm under 5'8" on that day at 12pm, so basically 5'8" ( look at 3 mm , it is effectively nothing ) Now I am still stubborn enough to suggest that the lowest he would normally ever hit is 5'8" and on this day, his slight drop below this was due to an unaccountable factor such as a sleepless night where he had spent the night walking around his cell or perhaps he had visited the Gym or worked out in his room after breakfast. But he did fall ever so slightly below 5'8" on that particular day.
Either way it was an interesting little study and counting pixels is perhaps the most difficult and boring thing on planet earth !!!!!! and finally, a word from our sponsors;

calm down folks, The pic was taken midday, if you phone corcoran state its a jail he was in, there is another one with a similar name but his was the alcholol and firearms one) , say your a student and your doing an assignment and your lookin for mugshot procedure and they'll tell you everything. Police file photos are taken midday before recess ( as not to infringe on the prisoners excersize and dining time ) and in prison issue shoes only. Id imagine this is because crooks dont walk the streets barefoot lol and most dress shoes and running shoes have around 1" heels.

Thanks Leonari , my freind is called Esam and we used to work together. He now lives in London where he started in an airport restaurant but now works as a airport security guy on the gates. He has met a few celebs but the only ones i care about are Stallone and Downey, i am still in shock at the Downey one, i thought he was ripping the proverbial but my pal doesnt know i use this site so thats why he never told me at the time it happened , it was only when i asked him after he mentioned he had got Iron Man and had seen the guy in it. Madness. He says he was thought he was about 5'10" before he took his shoes off then he was no taller than me ( I am 5'8" morning, 5'7.75" and then i shrink to 5'7.5" evening ) so i personally believe Downey is taller than myself and is around 5'8.5" in the morning and a flat 5'8" the rest of the time. My same freind also met stallone at the Airport and said he was no bigger than 5'10" and seemed a little bit shorter which is why i believe stallone is between 5'9" and 5'10" now ( this as some time over the last 2 years , i think it was for rocky balboa promotion ) as stallone would have been in his 60's obviousley when my freind met him. I also got to see Jackie Chan with my freind ( at an unrelated boxing event up here ) and i got to see Jackie Chan is no bigger than 5'9" at the moment. also leonari, what you said about genes. My dad is 5'5" ( used to be 5'6 but he is 55 now ) my mum is 5'0 flat and hasnt lost any height , I am 5'7.5" which is quite short yet my older sister is 5'7.5" also which is quite tall for a girl. My freind is 6'2" yet his mum is 5'0" and his dad is 5'6" ! strange but there ya go. I still say enviromental factors are just as important as genes.
Thanks Leonari , my freind is called Esam and we used to work together. He now lives in London where he started in an airport restaurant but now works as a airport security guy on the gates. He has met a few celebs but the only ones i care about are Stallone and Downey, i am still in shock at the Downey one, i thought he was ripping the proverbial but my pal doesnt know i use this site so thats why he never told me at the time it happened , it was only when i asked him after he mentioned he had got Iron Man and had seen the guy in it. Madness. He says he was thought he was about 5'10" before he took his shoes off then he was no taller than me ( I am 5'8" morning, 5'7.75" and then i shrink to 5'7.5" evening ) so i personally believe Downey is taller than myself and is around 5'8.5" in the morning and a flat 5'8" the rest of the time. I don't know why Downey is wearing lifts all of a sudden, its pretty obvious since he never really did before. Someone like Sly can get away with it with most people since he has been wearing big heeled shoes since the late 70's but Downey just looks plain ridiculous with his lifts.

Robert downey jr seems around 5'8, he really does wear big lifts and never appears over 5'10 with them. Glenn is about 5'7 .5 at this time when he met robert and robert most likely has an inch and a half footwear advantage so a 2 inch difference is what it should be

runt I only mentioned the left leg because only their left legs are in line with eachother. In the picture Downey's left leg is pretty much in line with Sly's two legs but his right leg is not. With lifts the advantage would be in the ankle area not the knee area as Sly's knees being higher could be how he's sitting or just the fact that he has longer legs.

I agree Glenn. 5'9" is pushing it a bit. 5'8" or 5'8.5" range seems right. Interestingly enough I've never heard anyone estimate him below 5'7". Usually he's always estimated at 5'8" or listed at 5'9". Seems like a strong 5'8".

Thank you for reminding me of the 3" between mouth and eyes average. I drew a line at the top of Sly and Robert's heads and copied the distance in between and pasted it between their mouth and eyes. The result was smaller than that but the 2 of those was bigger by quite a bit meaning the height difference was about 2", maybe a bit more going by that.

Thank you for reminding me of the 3" between mouth and eyes average. I drew a line at the top of Sly and Robert's heads and copied the distance in between and pasted it between their mouth and eyes. The result was smaller than that but the 2 of those was bigger by quite a bit meaning the height difference was about 2", maybe a bit more going by that.

I can't believe Robert Downey Jr's footwear. It is so obvious and they are ugly. His foot is bulging out the front and you can see at the back he's like 4 inches upwards. Barefoot, I bet you he'd be shorter than Glenn. You'd think he would get his trousers made to cover what that big shoe gives.

The scary thing about this picture Click Here is that you can see that his heel is bulging out above the lip bit on the right shoe. On the left one you can see his heel is above the leather and actually in the part of the shoe that is made of that stretchy stuff. I think this is where me and RisingForce come close to agreeing. To me Downey could be 5'8.5" MAX in the morning. Although seeing the pics with him and Tom Cruise makes me think they are the same height, so he could be as low as 172cm.

I think he is at LEAST 5'8.5" in the morning, i myself lose an inch over the course of the day but i usually will lose around 1/2 an inch, my morning height is 5'8" and i usually shrink to 5'7.5" with 5'7.75" my overall average for the day.

Also i mentioned in a previous post how Robert Downey Jr appeared tiny when barefoot next to a barefoot Marissa Tomei in "Only You" ( i own this and DO NOT LAUGH ! I AM HETERO !) Well it seems this has also arisen in the marissa tomei page, she is listed at 5'4" here but i have always read 5'6" for her and she was only around 2-2.5 inches shorter when both were face to face in full body shot and barefoot ! so id say she is actually closer to 5'6".anyway here is a comment made by anonymous taken from the Marissa Tomei page:

Assuming she is 5'5.5 to 5'6" this, yet again, backs up the 5 foot 8 height claim ( also he makes light out of the fact he is shorter than gwyneth paltrow quite alot so whatever she is, we know he is shorter than )

A lot of people don't know how to wear them though. Sly hasn't exactly hid the fact that he wears them well either. Brad Pitt has worn some huge ugly shoes in recent years as well although at times he's hid the fact that he wears lifts very well. Mel Gibson is a great example of how to wear lifts, you wouldn't even notice he wears them if you weren't looking for it.
Downey is also one of the biggest movie stars in the world again after Iron Maiden and he's now known for playing a superhero. Maybe he doesn't like appearing short or average because he knows people expect him to b 5'10" or 5'11".

He is getting so ridiculous with the lifts. I mean he isn't that short. For instance Ben Stiller seems to be fine with his height at least he isn't wearing lifts all the time.

Come on, give this guy some respect. His dad is 6'3", I don't beleive anything less than 5'9" is acceptable. Robert Downey jr. has looked pretty tall at moments. It's just that he clearly has been through a lot, which reduced his growth. Hate me if you want but I'm claiming that his natural height is close to 6 feet.

That defintley seems like the range for him. Tall enough to look on the tall side of average in Elevator shoes(5'10"-5'11") but short enough to seem short without them or even sometimes with them.
Seems like 5'8"-5'8.5" is likely.
