I guess he was around 6'4.5 in the Fresh Prince. Thats why I don't think Will Smith was ever quite 6'2 because if he was then that would make Avery 6'5 which he did not quite look in the Fresh Prince. I doubt Will Smith is 6'1 max like some people are claiming he is because that would defnintly make James Avery 6'3.

In 1989 when the show started James Avery would have been roughly around 40 years old and I think being so heavy as he was would have made loose abut 1cm from his peak height by then.

In his 20's yes about 6'4.75 maybe even 196cm on a very good day who knows?

James I think he could've peaked near 6ft5in. He always looked to have about 3in on Smith. For accuracy reasons I put Smith at 6ft1.75in and Avery at 6ft4.75in peak.

There aren't any recent pictures of Smith and Avery together. Anyway just checked, Avery is 61....so he's probably dropped some height. 193cm now.

Actually I don't think he was 6'5.

I think Will is not quite 6'2 and he did not look like a 6'5 guy in comparison to 6'1.5 Smith.

The man was a massive individual. Perhaps at peak he was about 6'5.25'' and currently around 6'4.5'. Depending on posture, in some scenes he had about 2.5 inches on will, and in some scenes around 3 or 3.5 inches. Def over 6'5 at peak probs under it today.

Look at the beggining of the video I posted and there looks 2.5 between Avery and Will Smith. This was the 90's so James Avery may have well been 6'5 then and Will looks 6'2 1/2.

Just watching Fresh Prince now, and yes, he does look enormous. Even huger next to 5'6 (ish) Alfonso Ribeiro. The writers must have chosen two very physically different actors for Phil and Carlson for comedic purposes - how could a guy that massive have such a tiny son?

I just took a look on some pics with Avery and yes, he looks really huge. Maybe he doesn't appear as tall as he claimed because of his obese size but yes, he could look a legit 6'5" but 6'6" is out of question.

Come on! 6'6" for Avery is ridiculous. Even 6'5" is too high for him. I never thought that he's tall anyway because in the episodes of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Avery has a 6'3" appearance. I would go for 6'4" as Avery's peak height on a good day but he's nothing above.

On the Fresh Prince, James Avery looked 2-3 inches taller than Will Smith. I would say he's about 6'4".
