I saw him at Goodwood Festival of Speed last month, but it was just a case of him walking past me and me suddenly realising that this white-haired middle-aged man was actually Jay Leno. I'm 6'1", I don't know if the ground was totally flat and he was stooping slightly (just in the way people do sometimes when walking around outside), but I'd guess 5'10" rather than 5'11". But you can't really take my word for it because it was only a very brief celebrity encounter, it's not like I actually meet him, he was with a few guys on his way to the VIP area anyway. The comments on here are varied, and rightfully so. Jay Leno is one of those guys whose height seems to vary somewhat. He sometimes appears to be 5'9", and other times closer to 6'. I would say that he's 5'10". The stated height of 5'11" may be reached when he's wearing shoes with a large sole / heel.

Just saw an episode of test drive on Speed with Tommy Kendall interviewing Jay Leno at his garage full of cars. Tommy Kendall tells the viewers almost every week that he's 6'4" and has trouble fitting in many cars that he's testing. He's standing beside Jay Leno during the entire interview and the top of Leno's head is at the bottom of Kendall's nose. If Leno is 5'11" tall, then something is really wrong. I'm convinced after seeing last night's show with Coldplay as the musical guest, that Leno is 6ft minimum in shoes. The difference between Chris Martin(6ft1.25) and Leno was roughly 2 inches, the same difference I had with Martin when I met him. I stand 5ft11.75 out of bed, and 5ft11.25 by the evening. With shoes I'm anywhere between 6ft0-6ft1 depending on the type(boots, dress, running, etc.).
5ft11 is a good listing for Leno, since I'm assuimng he does wear a bit of a lift in his dress shoes, or just thicker heeled ones. I'd guess he's anywhere between 6ft0.5-6ft1 in shoes. The footage of Martin and Leno together was taken on an outside stage where they performed, not in the studio, so the usual odd angles when a celeb walks out for the greeting wouldn't come into play. Just saw Gordon Ramsey on Leno with a good long cooking session on screen where the two of them stood side by side for many minutes. Good equal ground, camera long shot. Much more accurate then judging guests as they walk out and greet Leno at bad angles etc. Ramsey was definately not much more than 2 inches taller, and 2 1/2 is really pushing it. Not 3 inches for sure. Ramsey is most often listed 6'2" and looks it and on this site 6'1.5". Leno appeared very minimum 5'11" and possibly 6" if Ramsey is 6'2". Believe me ive dated women who were a real 5'8" and 5'9". Being a 5'10" guy I pay attention and tend to stand up straighter when around them hehe. I know the difference between 5'8" and 5'10". The ground wasn't that uneven. That was in my college days and I used to walk around in very flat shoes. I was with a friend (6'0-6'1 guy) who was also stunned by his small stature. Don't get me wrong... I love Jay. But I can't give him more than 5'9 1/4 in the morning! If Jay is 5'11" then I'm 6'0! I totally agree with Ken! I met Leno years ago in Seattle's "Univesity District." He was in town for a book signing at the University book store. Last night Ryan Seacrest and Dennis Leary were on Leno, and what struck me as odd was how much taller Leno was then Seacrest(5ft7.75). Seacrest was easily 4 maybe 5 inches shorter than Leno! That would put Leno at either 5ft11.75 reasonable-6ft0.75 which seems to tall. Now I know they both are rumored to wear lifts, but my guess is Seacrest is even shorter than 5ft7.75, maybe more like pushing 5ft7 to Leno's 5ft11-5ft11.5. I don't buy the 5ft10 comments where Leno is concerned, I think 5ft11 minimum is pretty accurate and possibly taller.
As for Leary he had what looked like 2 inches on Leno while wearing these cowboy heeled boots with his suit. He's very thin now and looks a good 6ft1, but the claims of 6ft3 seem a bit much. Now, hopefully, here's a good point of comparison for Jay. Joss Stone was on the other night and she was performing barefoot. Jay went up to her after her peformance and stood right by her. I watched pretty intently for height comparisions. Jay looked around 2 to 3 inches taller.
This site lists Stone as 5'10" although I've seen shorter listings.
So, if Stone really is 5'10" then that would put Jay around 6'0". Remember, she was barefoot and he looked possibly 3 inches taller, meaning 6'1". so, if he has on an inch or so heel, he would be 6'0" of Stone is truly 5'10".
But, of course he could have had lifts on, and she might not be actually 5'10".

Put some 2"+ lifts in your shoes, 5'9" becomes 5'11"+. With his running shoes I was looking over the top of his head, that's what struck me. At 5'11", I'm looking at his forehead or near the eyes. Plus the hair must add an inch or more.

I can't decide whether Jay is 5'9" or 5'10" barefoot, but I'm thoroughly convinced he's not over 5'10". I think like any guy in the 5'10" range, he can easily and regularly appear 6'0", and maybe even slightly more with the proper footwear/lifts. I'm a regular watcher of his show, and I can say that all the years I've been watching, I've seen much more proof pointing to him being of average height than proof pointing to him being 5'11" (or more). Athletes more honest? I don't buy that. From the times kids are in school they are billed taller when they play sports. At my small high school, all the guys who played sports were billed an inch or two taller than they were. This carries on into the NFL, NBA, etc. These kids, from the time they are in high school are learning to lie about their height. I doubt most of them are any more honest than celebs...

On the 19th of october 06, Jay took of his shoes. A good way to see if he is wearing lifts. No, he wears normal shoes and I compared the height between the guest, a worker (man) from a zoo, standing 2 inches shorter than Jay in shoes. It was the same without. Diane Lane (5'5.5") was on the Tonight Show a few days ago. She had three inch heels (making her 5'8.5") and Leno looked around 2-3 inches taller. I think the current estimate is correct, although I'd say he could be anywhere from 178-181cm. In his peak, he could've very well been 6 feet even.

That does seem to be the disconnect bothering me, Viper. I'm really starting to wonder if Jay is a lift wearer. He never struck me as that type of person, but there seems to be sightings of him from 5'11" to 6'1", but then other times (usually more candid sightings out on the streets) you hear 5'9"-5'11". Jay has referred to himself as around being "around", or "about" 6'0". I have read 5'10" and 5'11" listings. I believe 5'10". Viper, your doing your thing again saying that he's probably 5'9"-5'9.5". This is weird, Josh Lucas was just on his show (5/3/2006-5/4/2006), and, again, he and Jay looked EXACTLY the same height when they came out and did the complimentary handshake and hug. Maybe Jay really is 5'11", but that still brings into question Josh's height. One thing we can assume about Jay is that he is a constant. If you guys have heard some of his guest bring up this point, they make a point to bring up that, like Einstein, Jay is notorious for wearing the same denim outfit before the show. I'd imagine that he's not the type of guy that would wear lifts depending on his guests as some suggested, here.

I just saw Leno a week ago at his favorite car bookstore. He's exactly my height. In other words he's 5'11". He just doesn't stand up straight all the time. But when he needed to grab a book that was high up on the shelf he reached up and grabbed it without having to stand on his tiptoes. Now Johnny Carson was 5'10".
