I don't think that Robert De Niro has shrunk to 5ft6. Nowadays he barely scrapes 5ft8 unless he has always been a lift wearer. He seems to be close in height with Ben Kingsley who is still 5ft7-5ft8. Sean Penn who's probably 5'8", but here looks taller than De Niro by at least an inch and a half. Michael Douglas who I think like his father has that shrinking disease. He looked to be a solid 5'10" back when I saw him on the Fox lot when he was staring in SHINING THROUGH in 1992. Now he looks like he's lost several inches. What a shame you people caring about rather someone has such height or not. I'm an art director, and as a matter of my profession let me tell you that actors are just as tall as the camera makes them look like. There are many tricks for doing that,and actually no good director really cares about a man's height. When it comes to "portray" the somewhat "handsome" man, what rather matters is the the facial features and the proportion of the body, and since there are aren't too many tall guys whose proportions really satisfy the expert's eye (legs or arms too long sometimes or heads too small,hands too big, etc) most of hollywood good selling actors are not tall men. Sean Penn is 1,72 mt at best and so what. None of us care at all. He sells and that's good for the industry.

I was watching "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" a few week ago, and I payed attention to the first scne Sean has with Ray Walston. Walston looked about an inch taller. Walston was only about 5'8, maybe a little shorter considering he was 68 at the time. He looks clearly 5'8.5-5'9. He's quite stocky giving him the appearance of someone shorter, but there's only about 1.5-2 inches difference between he and Kidman. Just as I suspected. I skipped the film cause its at least 10 bucks in LA now. For years, people have said that Sean Penn is around 5-6, and I do believe that to be a little low. But I think that he is between 5-7 and 5-8, and I have met Nicole twice and I believe that she is more than 5-10 and not quite 5-11. Usually, they will find ways to lower the height difference if it is around two inches or so, but if the difference is almost 4 inches, the only way to do this is to keep them apart. To his credit, Penn strikes me as the type to avoid boxes and built up shoes, so the director, Sydney Pollack, probably had to develop "creative" forms of camera angles. Cody says on 25/Apr/05
I was on this site because I too noticed that the only time the actors were shot together was when they were both sitting. It got me curious as to how short he is. The final scene is akward in that he doesn't even get down from a railing to properly say goodbye to someone we're suposed to believe he cares deeply for. PS-Overall the movie is a slow bore with a couple of great actors, which is why it got any positive reviews at all. Without the star power I don't believe anyone would even recommend this movie. Did anyone see "The Interpreter" this weekend? I am curious how the substantial height difference between Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman was handled. As I've shared with our editor, I met Kevin Bacon, and he is not even 5-9. This picture with Penn puts him at just under 5-7 by my calculations, which is near abouts what people have been saying about Penn for years.
[Editor Rob: I've yet to see this, but surely one thing they done was distancing Penn and Kidman more than you would normally distance actors in a wide shot? I know for instance in Code 46 the director when he had big Robbins and Morton in a close-up scene he had to resort to a big camera tilt on a few occasions...] |
