I estimate Tom at peak was 5'11 7/8 (182.6) and probably max 5'11 1/8 now (180.6) comparison with Obama several years ago. Obama could be someone holding 6'1 1/8 (185.7) afterall its because Kobe Bryant was a full 6'5 guy so making Obama look to be 4" shorter and link back to Tom a fraction over 180cm.
Mickie said on 5/Aug/19
Next to Luck I'd guess Hanks could still almost hit 5'11" busting a gut. Strong 5'11" range guy peak, maybe pushing 6'0" if he measured a bit earlier.
Chris Junior Hernandez 1990 said on 11/Jul/19
He could have lost an inch or 3/4 or he was never proper 6'0. There is some possibility. Hanks atually look 2" shorter than Obama. Obama had a full 4" shorter than 6'4.75" Kobe Bryant but strange that Obama look closer to 6'1 1/4 with 6'0 1/2 Donald Trump, 6'2 1/2 The Rock and many others celebrities. This evening at the bus stop, I met a Tom Hanks fan. He was raving about the film 'Forest Gump' and suggested that I should watch it. I will. I've never seen it before.

His name was Mark and he had a beard. He seemed pleased to meet me. We also talked about 'The Green Mile' and we both agreed that it was a very addictive film.

I had to go to hospital today to get my painkillers. On the way back I picked up a plant to plant on Manelia the Second's grave.

Judge from Obama 185.5cm i don't give a mm over 181cm for Tom Hanks unless Obama atually had fraction more footwear but hard to say. Meanwhile i still had strong impression he is only 181cm nowadays but close to 6'0 peak.

@ Rob - I think it might be worth adding 'Angels and Demons' and 'Inferno' to Tom's list of credits because they are well and truly on par with 'The Da Vinci Code' - cross my heart! 😊💖
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 26/Mar/19
@ Bobby - I am now on 'Inferno', and the nightmares, followed by hallucinations, are of Dante's Inferno. The nurse, played by Felicity Jones, a child prodigy, who made university at 12, has a poster up in her home of the Sandro Botticelli (from what I have gathered) painting of Dante's inferno and as Tom looks at the painting, he recognises the hallucinations he's been having. Botticelli lived from 1445-1510 for those of you who are interested and Dante from 1265-1321. I checked them out last night!

This is seriously the most absorbing trilogy I have ever seen, and something I know that I will be seeing again and again and again, picking up new things with every watch. Dante himself aroused my interest when Tom said of Dante "This is 700 years old" and then we go on to see a mask made of Dante at the time of his death. He looked anything but happy, having been banned from Florence for his writings, which included 'The Divine Comedy'.

I first set my eyes on similarly revolting depictions when I visited Hampton Court Palace when I was 14 or 15. There are many pictures up in there showing people being tortured in purgatory and Hell, and scared me to pieces. However, they were/are extremely beautifully painted. I am on the verge of buying a print of the Botticelli picture Felicity Jones, who plays Sienna, has in her home. They are available to buy.

Thanks for getting me into this fascinating part of history. The university course you are studying must be amazing. So far in my life, I have missed out on a huge chunk of the Italian Renaissance and the meaningful paintings and predictions dating back to those times.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 25/Mar/19
Eek! What a terrifying opening to 'Inferno' I have just witnessed! Tom is in hospital suffering from a head trauma, and having the most unbelievable nightmares. There are people walking about with revolting masks on, and some have their heads on back to front, Exorcist-style. No wonder the certificate for this has gone up a notch - it's freaked me right out!
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 24/Mar/19
* Robert Langdon is the part played by Tom in 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Angels and Demons' and 'Inferno'.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 24/Mar/19
I saw 'The Da Vinci Code' last week and am now watching Robert Langdon*'s second exploratory adventure 'Angels and Demons'. It is a good deal scarier that 'The Da Vinci Code', and both films, I feel, are given 12 certification because of the lack of swearing therein. The rare horror scenes in this are quite shocking.

There are some fantastic support actors including Stellan Skarsgard and Ewan McGregor. There are many, many others, who tend to be so tall that Tom looks decidedly average, and that's most unusual - except, perhaps, in 'The Green Mile', which also has an exceptionally tall cast.

I saw very recently in a rundown of the 10 nicest actors to work with that Tom is THE TOP in this rather privileged listing! There is a least pleasing actors to work with chart too if you fancy a laugh, but I won't go into that....

Tom gets 6ft peak and half-an-inch less for today's height. 😊

CDS said on 17/Dec/18
I highly doubt hanks was EVER over 6', as someone mentioned below, 6' geena Davis edged him out in, a league of their own, and I even posted a pic awhile back from the 90s when Harrison Ford edged him out, who most on here agree, by then Ford was down to no more than a flat 6'. And of course, 6' denzel edged him out by a tad in, Philadelphia.

It’s interesting to see that most people on here believe Hanks to have been over 6’ 0” at his peak. Perhaps he was 6’ 0.5” at his peak making him very clos to either Harrison Ford or Chris Pine.
CDS said on 13/Dec/18
I just saw the film, the post, too, Rob? I honestly didn't think Jesse plemons was a full 5'10", but maybe that's an argument that hanks, at age 60 or 61, whatever he is now, has lost just a tad? Maybe 5'11.25"-5'11.5" peak, down to a flat 5'11" now?
Editor Rob
I still feel Hanks can measure over 5ft 11 flat.
CDS said on 11/Dec/18
Yeah, under 5'10" now or ever is ridiculous. I would say though the voters on this site having his peak height at over 6' is wrong. I really would put him in the 5'11" to 5'11.5" range. Not sure in any height loss. Tom seems to have held up well.
Editor Rob
The last film I remember watching with Hanks was The Post, he had one scene with Jesse Plemons and looke still comfortably 5ft 11 range.

Under 5'10"?! Come on. He can still look 181 cm with Obama in the video Junior posted or at least around 5'11". It's possible he was always 5'11" range, but he did look taller than 5'11" guys like Joe Mantegna and Leonardo Dicaprio and I think he was taller than solid 5'11"-5'11.5" Bruce Willis as well. He could also look about 4" taller than Antonio Banderas in Philadelphia and Banderas is probably 5'8", though listed 5'8.5" here.

Ford is closer to the camera, but it's still pretty obvious he looks taller. Plus, per his usual posture, he's slouching, and Hanks, as usual, has pretty good posture. Below, another more recent photo, where actually I was wrong before, they look pretty close in height, but Ford has obviously lost height, so that would put the 2 of them in the 5'11" range. I actually don't think Hanks looks any shorter now than what he looked in the past. I might even go as far as to say he looks taller? Maybe lifts have been brought into the equation since he's become -per his own words while hosting SNL LOL - "National Treasure"?? LMAO

6' tall. Between 182.5-183.1 during youth. Most of his height is in his long face which can make him look shorter if you look at just his body proportions which I can understand his erroneous 5'11.5" guesses. He edged vin Diesel who at best may be 181,9 so rob is ok.
Matthew Robinson said on 4/Oct/17

willes, are there any Film clips on youtube with good ground or events/appearances where hanks looked a weak 6'?

nick cage is known to be a boot wearer, half of his voters think he missed out on the mighty 6' mark and he wears boots to compensate, I find that not true as he matched Travolta on "face off"(sad, but good film), so I do think cage is 6'0-6'0.25, not sure about the footwear worn in that film though.
Willes188 said on 13/Aug/17

5'11 and 3/4 is a reasonable argument.

My reason Willis:
Edged out 180 listed Aaron eckhart in "sully"
Edged out 181 listed Leo in "catch me if you can"
And he edged out 182 listed vin in "SPR"

Notes, yes I know rob may have been generous and vin Is 181, if that, but we still have to refer to a separate celeb as robs listing.

Option a: 183/6' prime 181/182 5'11.5 today
Option b: 182/5'11.75 prime 5'11.25/181 today

Animus said on 11/Jun/17
My guess would be that he is slightly closer to 5'11" than 6' these days. I think if you have a thin bone structure, like Hanks, you have a greater chance of bone deterioration and therefore a greather chance of noticeable height loss. Thickly built men, if they are not excessively overweight, can probably hold on to their peak height longer than average.

James B said on 14/Feb/17
He looked tallish in turner and hooch but perhaps they just had a tall cast for that film.

Even Steven seagal at a legit 6'4 actually could not look that remarkably tall in some of his past movies because of some of the tall cast members.

No he don't. Deads on a 4cm shorter than 185cm obama can look 5cm but more specific is 4cm 1.5". But he could be 181cm plus since obama is 185cm plus so 5'11.5 was still accurate

On the photos for Inferno's promo, he doesn't look that much shorter than 6'2.75 Omar Sy. Seriously, he could pass easily for 6'1, I was surprised. And BTW, on the same photos, Ron Howard looks 4-5' shorter than Hanks, very strange. Hanks could be a lift wearer on events, but I don't understand why a man would to wore lifts when he's a natural 6' footer. Big Ego? Or maybe I'm just a little blind!

Editor Rob: there's a lot of guys in 50's or just turning 60 who may have only dipped a 1/4 inch or near half inch. I think for Hanks, he is a case. I still think 6ft then and 11.5 now might be ok, although I can see an argument at times for an 'almost 6ft'.

Actually i think he has ever had a figure which never seemed a "tall figure".
Instead, I think he showed to have been 6' in past because he ever looked that next to others tall actors since 80's.
I agree with Dmeyer that 182.5-183 cms was his common low height at peak so 6' is the fairest estimate (like for Jensen Ackles, for example).
I do not a agree with him about his current height. I think when he stays straight he seems taller than a flat 5'11.5" I said before the lowest listing that he can have today is 5'11.75".

I do think you're right that Geena Davis at 183 cm edges him out, but I won't say by a full inch. I think a peak height of 182 cm would be a fair listing for Hanks. He looks 181 cm most of the time to me but I could agree with 182 cm, especially given that Dmeyer who is pretty close to Tom's height seemed to think he was somewhere in the 182-183 cm zone in person. Legit 183 is pushing it for me though, considering the Geena Davis comparison among others. And I'd say maybe 181 cm would be a fair listing for his current height, I do not believe he's lost more than 1 cm.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/May/15

As i said before, IMO he was very very close to 6' during 80's...
he maybe was 182,5-183 cms averagely in the evening...I think he was weak/flat 6', not strong one (183-183,5 cms) like Hayden Christensen, Chris Walken, David Duchovny or others...
Today he maybe has lost something, but i think less than 1 cms, so he can be in the 5'11.75-6' range...

i think rob can quietly wait for the downgrade, because he still looks very close to his peak height, considering he's almost 60. I think he has lost max 5-6 mms...he's still a bit taller than a flat 5'11.5"...

Not sure if he's lost any height, but I would say even in his prime he was never a solid 6'; maybe 5'11 1/2" max. In "Dragnet", as Hypado mentions below, 6' Dan Aykroyd was about an inch taller (or at least a half inch). In "Apollo 13", he and 5'11" Bill Paxton were almost identical in height. On SNL recently 5'11" Alec Baldwin looked about the same height, or maybe even a hair taller (although some have speculated about him possibly wearing lifts-??). I'm going to go with peak height (end of day barefoot) 5'11"-5'11 1/2".
Mathew said on 4/Feb/15
I really think he was more of a strong 5'11" even in his prime, than a legit 6 footer. He's always had near 4" on Spielberg, but not really any more than that. [Editor Rob: the middle of the camera is probably right around his chin area, so somewhere in 5ft 3 range chin + head and you have 6ft and a bit on average. Then minus shoes and add back what he'd be in a measured pose...I think close to 6ft is quite possible, but unfortunately it's always harder to tell how much he might lose.]

Looks in the 5'11 range now. Was looking at a photo of when he met the Aston Villa team in the USA and looks the same height as Darren Bent who is listed at 5'11. However I'd agree 6'0 at peak.

Great actor, superb height, not great looking though. But he remains one of my favourites.

He Èven looked a full 6'0 10 years back when i met him

red, i belive dmeyer's words: almost 6'00" 10-20 years ago and 5'11.5" today is perfecly believable...he was very close to strong sixfooter actors, like Tommy Lee Jones or Harrison Ford...
Until 2006 he was very close to 6'0 (look at him next to Jean Reno, who's not shorter than 6'1 and Paul Bettany), but in the recent years he had a little loss, i think about 1cm...

I met him several Times 10 yrs back any thing under 5'11.5 is impossible and 5'11.75-6ft is likelier 10 yrs back
